Are you an undergrad planning to apply for grad school this fall? Make the application process less stressful–get a head start on your application materials now. This series of workshops will help you to prepare four of the critical pieces of your application process: finding funding, writing a strong curriculum vitae and personal statement, and getting strong letters of recommendation. Additional information and resources are available on our website: http://expd.washington.edu/scholarships

Personal Statement Writing Workshops

Monday, April 20, 2015, 4:30-5:30pm, MGH 171

Wednesday, April 29, 2015, 12:30-1:30pm, MGH 171

The Personal Statement is an important part of an application package. Applying for scholarships and graduate/professional programs often requires a personal statement or application letter. This type of writing requires you to outline your strengths confidently and concisely, which can be challenging. Personal Statement Workshops will provide students with essential information to develop an understanding of not only writing about their interests, eligibility and suitability for applications, but also to learn how their statements provide evidence of their achievements that aren’t reflected in other parts of an application. RSVP to attend at https://expo.uw.edu/expo/rsvp/event/236.

Getting Great Recommendation Letters Workshops

Tuesday, April 21, 2015, 4:30-5:30pm, MGH 171

Wednesday, May 6, 2015, 12:30-1:30pm, MGH 171

This workshop will help you plan ahead for developing strong relationships with faculty and other mentors, asking for letters of recommendation, and preparing your recommenders to write you stellar letters. RSVP to attend at https://expo.uw.edu/expo/rsvp/event/289.

Curriculum Vitae Writing Workshop

Thursday, April 23, 2015, 12:30-1:30pm, MGH 171

Develop your undergraduate CV for use in graduate school applications! A Curriculum Vitae (“CV” or “vitae”) is a comprehensive, biographical statement emphasizing your professional qualifications and activities. A CV is similar to a resume, but an advantage to the CV format is the significant freedom to choose the headings and categories for your information and the strength reflected in their arrangement. Bring a working draft, such as an existing resume, and a list of activities including: Honors, Awards & Prizes received no longer than 5 years ago, Academic and Research Activities, Community Service Involvement, Work History, and Activities outside of the Academic Environment. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to work with Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards staff to develop and strengthen a draft of your CV! RSVP to attend at https://expo.uw.edu/expo/rsvp/event/237.

UW application deadline: Jan. 12, 2015, 11:59pm

UW application information and online application form: http://expd.washington.edu/scholarships/search/search-results.html?page_stub=beinecke

The Beinecke Scholarship provides $34,000 for graduate study in arts, humanities and social science fields to juniors (based on graduation date) of exceptional ability, achievement, and who have financial need. Students must be nominated to compete for this scholarship, and the UW is allowed to nominate one student per year to compete for this national award. Students from all 3 campuses are welcome to apply for nomination.

If you are considering graduate studies in an arts, humanities or social science field, have a passion for that field, and financial need, consider applying! The Beinecke Scholarship program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. There are no geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship, and recipients are allowed to supplement the award with other scholarships, assistantships and research grants.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must:

Have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise during his or her undergraduate career.

Be a college junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree during the 2014-2015 academic year. “Junior” means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2015 and August 2016.

Plan to enter a master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences.

Please note some exceptions the Beinecke Foundation makes in terms of fields of study: Students in the social sciences who plan to pursue graduate study in neuroscience should not apply for a Beinecke Scholarship. Also, students who plan to pursue graduate study in professional programs (law school, business school, etc.) should not apply.

Be a United States citizen; OR a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during his or her undergraduate years. Primary evidence of meeting this criterion is a student’s history of receiving need-based institutional, state or federal grants-in-aid. An institutional financial aid officer will be required to complete a Financial Data Sheet certifying that the student meets this criterion. During the selection process, the amount of financial need will be one of the factors considered with preference being given to candidates for whom the awarding of a scholarship would significantly increase the likelihood of the student’s being able to attend graduate school.

To learn more about this opportunity and the UW application and nomination process, please attend a Beinecke Scholarship Information Session:

NSF?s GRFP is one of the premier opportunities to fund your graduate study.
It provides 3 years of funding that you can use in a 5 year time frame.
This includes a $32,000 annual stipend and tuition. For UW graduate
students, GAIP health insurance is also covered.

While there may be an assumption this funding would be only for the ?usual
suspects? (e.g., life sciences, engineering, math, etc.), there are a
surprising number of social science disciplines included in the eligibility
list, including STEM education, Political Science, Public Policy,
Communication, Anthropology, History, and Sociology. We encourage
students in all eligible fields to look into this fellowship.

Seniors who are planning to attend graduate school can apply now and take
the funding with them to whatever school they attend. First year graduate
students (and sometimes second year students) can apply now.

The information session will cover the application process, strategies for
successful applications and more details regarding how the fellowship
operates. Application deadlines range from October 29 ? November 4, 2014.
Students should start their applications now.

Basic eligibility criteria:

* research in an eligible NSF research area (includes several of the
social sciences)
* US citizens or permanent residents by the application deadline
* students in their first year of graduate study or at the beginning of
their second year of graduate study (with some limitations)
* students who have not earned a previous graduate degree
* graduating senior undergraduates who plan to apply to and begin graduate
student by next fall

Full eligibility information is detailed in the program solicitation.
