UW application information and online application form: http://expd.washington.edu/scholarships/search/search-results.html?page_stub=beinecke

Last UW information session: Wed., Dec. 3, 2014, 12:30 – 1:20pm, 173R MGH

The Beinecke Scholarship provides $34,000 for graduate study in arts, humanities and social science fields to juniors (based on graduation date) of exceptional ability, achievement, and who have financial need. Students must be nominated to compete for this scholarship, and the UW is allowed to nominate one student per year to compete for this national award. Students from all 3 campuses are welcome to apply for nomination.

If you are considering graduate studies in an arts, humanities or social science field, have a passion for that field, and financial need, consider applying! The Beinecke Scholarship program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. There are no geographic restrictions on the use of the scholarship, and recipients are allowed to supplement the award with other scholarships, assistantships and research grants.

To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must:

Have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise during his or her undergraduate career.

Be a college junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree during the 2014-2015 academic year. “Junior” means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2015 and August 2016.

Plan to enter a master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences.

Please note some exceptions the Beinecke Foundation makes in terms of fields of study: Students in the social sciences who plan to pursue graduate study in neuroscience should not apply for a Beinecke Scholarship. Also, students who plan to pursue graduate study in professional programs (law school, business school, etc.) should not apply.

Be a United States citizen; OR a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during his or her undergraduate years. Primary evidence of meeting this criterion is a student’s history of receiving need-based institutional, state or federal grants-in-aid. An institutional financial aid officer will be required to complete a Financial Data Sheet certifying that the student meets this criterion. During the selection process, the amount of financial need will be one of the factors considered with preference being given to candidates for whom the awarding of a scholarship would significantly increase the likelihood of the student’s being able to attend graduate school.

NSF?s GRFP is one of the premier opportunities to fund your graduate study.
It provides 3 years of funding that you can use in a 5 year time frame.
This includes a $32,000 annual stipend and tuition. For UW graduate
students, GAIP health insurance is also covered.

While there may be an assumption this funding would be only for the ?usual
suspects? (e.g., life sciences, engineering, math, etc.), there are a
surprising number of social science disciplines included in the eligibility
list, including STEM education, Political Science, Public Policy,
Communication, Anthropology, History, and Sociology. We encourage
students in all eligible fields to look into this fellowship.

Seniors who are planning to attend graduate school can apply now and take
the funding with them to whatever school they attend. First year graduate
students (and sometimes second year students) can apply now.

The information session will cover the application process, strategies for
successful applications and more details regarding how the fellowship
operates. Application deadlines range from October 29 ? November 4, 2014.
Students should start their applications now.

Basic eligibility criteria:

* research in an eligible NSF research area (includes several of the
social sciences)
* US citizens or permanent residents by the application deadline
* students in their first year of graduate study or at the beginning of
their second year of graduate study (with some limitations)
* students who have not earned a previous graduate degree
* graduating senior undergraduates who plan to apply to and begin graduate
student by next fall

Full eligibility information is detailed in the program solicitation.

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. For a complete list of countries, click here.

Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. For a complete list of languages, click here.

Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. To view the Program Basics for the Boren Scholarship, click here.

Undergraduate applicants must apply through UW to be considered for the Boren Undergraduate Scholarship Program. UW Seattle’s deadline for undergraduate applicants is January 8, 2015 for study abroad programs during the 2015-16 academic year. Interested students are welcomed to contact me: Robin Chang, robinc@uw.edu, Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards.

UW Bothell undergraduate and graduate students interested in these opportunities can contact Natalia Dyba (NDyba@uwb.edu) for campus deadlines and application support. UW Tacoma undergraduate and graduate students can contact Cindy Schaarschmidt (cs65@uw.edu) for campus deadlines and application support.

The Boren program also offers Graduate Fellowships for graduate students, details are at http://borenawards.org/boren_fellowship. There is no Boren campus application process at the graduate level; the national deadline for the Boren Graduate Fellowship is January 27, 2015. Marilyn Gray (megray@uw.edu) in the Graduate School Office of Fellowships & Awards is the point of contact for graduate students interested in this program.
