Lenovo Comes ThinkPad Twist in India for Rs 71,000

Lenovo has launched the ThinkPad Twist in India for Rs. 71,000. As per the company, this convertible can be used as a tablet or a laptop. ThinkPad Twist can also be quickly converted into a stand or tent mode, where the laptop becomes a media presenter.

The ThinkPad Twist comes with Windows 8 pre-loaded. The convertible device comes with up to 8GB DDR3 memory and can support up to 500GB of SSD with HDD performance booster. This device sports a 12.5-inch IPS multi-touch screen which according to Lenovo comes with anti-scratch and anti-smudge Gorilla glass.

For processor, Lenovo ThinkPad Twist can have up to Core i7-3517U processor. ThinkPad Twist is just 20 millimeters thin and weighs a mere 1.60 kgs. The other key features of the device are 2-seconds resume from sleep and 30-days standby. It comes with Lenovo's chiclet keyboard.

Lenovo ThikPad Twist will be available in mocha black colour at Think Exclusive Stores and multi- brand outlets across the country.

Applications such as Fruit Ninja, Evernote, AccuWeather, Skype, Amaon Kindle, BlueStacks come pre-installed on Lenovo ThinkPad Twist.

Lenovo is already offering hybrid devices that double up as laptops as well as tablets in India under its Idea Yoga series. The company had launched two models - IdeaPad Yoga 13 and IdeaPad Yoga 11- in December 2012.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 features a 13.3-inch 1600x900 multi-touch display, runs on Windows 8 and costs Rs. 84,290. While the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 is a Windows RT device that sports a 11.6-inch 1366x768 multi-touch display. This device is available for Rs. 61,790.

Sony too is offering Sony VAIO Duo 11 device in India that costs Rs. 89,990. It comes with what Sony terms as the 'Surf Slider' design, which helps the device to switch smoothly between Tablet and PC modes. It comes with 11.6-inch (29.4cm) screen with a resolution of 1920x1080. VAIO Duo 11 features a backlit keyboard, is 17.85 mm thin and weighs 1.3 kilograms.

The device is powered by 3rd generation Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7GHz processor and runs on Windows 8. Other features include 4GB DDR3 SDRAM and 128GB flash drive. VAIO Duo 11 comes with built-in 4,960mAh cell battery that lasts for about 4.5 hours. In comparison to the Sony device, it seems Lenovo through its ThinkPad Twist is offering a more value for money proposition.

Tablets seem to be the flavour of the season. From the established names to Indian brands everyone seems to be offering a tablet device of their own. As per data from Indian research firm CyberMedia, 1.1 million tablets were sold in the 3rd Quarter (July-September) 2012 and it expects the tablet market to double to around six million units in the year 2013.
Although tablets come in a variety of sizes and run various operating systems including iOS, Windows 8/RT and even QNX (Playbook OS), Android rules the roost when it comes to the Indian market. Tablets that are being offered in the Indian market range from Rs. 1,500 to all the way to Rs. 40,000.
We thought it would be a good idea to help identify gems from the clutter and present to you five interesting tablets to choose from especially for those who are on a limited budget.
Here's our list of the top five tablets priced under Rs.15,000 in no particular order.

Lava Etab Xtron
Lava Etab Xtron comes with a 7-inch IPS display sporting a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. There is a 1.5GHz Cortex A9 dual-core processor on-board, along with 1GB of RAM. The tablet runs on Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) and comes with 8GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 32 GB via microSD. Camera options include a 2-megapixel front camera.

The tablet comes with 3,500mAh battery. Connectivity options include 3G (via USB dongle), WiFi 802.11 b/g, Micro-USB port. Priced at Rs. 6,499, Lava Etab Xtron is a decent value for money option. It has good build quality and display. The only real drawback is that the battery is not too potent.

Spice Stellar Pad Mi-1010
Another interesting proposition comes from Spice. Spice has recently launched Stellar Pad Mi-1010 in the Indian market. This tablet comes with a 10.1-inch HD tablet with IPS display and is powered by 1.5GHz dual-Core processor with 1GB of DDR3 RAM. This tablet runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and is available for Rs. 12,999. For memory, there is 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded by up to 32GB through microSD card.
Spice Stellar Pad Mi-1010 comes with a 7600 mAh Lithium ion polymer battery, which the company claims will play video for 6 hours and has a standby of 15 days. It comes with a 3-megapixel rear camera shooter and a VGA front camera on-board. The Spice tablet too has a good display and decent viewing angles. Another advantage is it is offering Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) out of the box. However lack of Bluetooth connectivity may make you give this tablet a miss.

Asus MeMO Pad ME172V
Priced at Rs. 9,999, the Asus MeMO Pad ME172V packs in a 7-inch screen that has a display resolution of 1024x600 pixels and offers 10-point multi-touch. This tablet runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and offers full support for Google Play. The tablet is powered by VIA WM8950 processor that clocks 1GHz and is coupled with a Mali-400 GPU. For camera, there is a 1-megapixel front shooter with f/2.0 aperture that can record 720p video at 30fps. Asus MeMO Pad ME172V offers Wi-Fi connectivity but no SIM slot. There is a 4,270mAh battery on-board.
The latest tablet from Asus comes with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 32GB via microSD. Asus is also offering 5GB of cloud storage via ASUS WebStorage.
Asus MeMO Pad ME172V looks durable but the single core 1GHz processor may turn out to be underwhelming for some. Another disadvantage with this tablet is that it is a Wi-Fi only tablet and does not have a SIM slot.

Samsung Galaxy Tab2 311
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 311 sports a 7-inch PLS TFT LCD display with a 1024x600 (WSVGA) resolution. The tablet comes pre-installed with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and 4,000mAh battery. For camera, there is a 3-megapixel rear and VGA front camera.
On the inside, the tablet is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and has 16GB of internal storage, which can be expanded to up to 32GB via microSD card. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 2.0.
Currently, this tablet is available on pre-order on Samsung e-store for Rs. 13,900 and should be available in the market soon.

Acer Iconia B1-A71
Sporting a price tag of Rs. 7,999 Acer Iconia B1-A71 is a tempting option. This tablet comes with a 7-inch display with a 1024x600 resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Mediatek processor (MTK 8317T) alongside 512MB RAM and 8GB internal storage. It features a microSD card to expand the available storage by another 32GB. Connectivity options on the Acer Iconia B1 include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 and Micro-USB. The tablet comes with 0.3-megapixel front camera.
The build quality of the tablet is nothing to boast about and the 512MB of RAM can be underwhelming for some but an attractive price tag and Android 4.1 are the highlights of the Acer Iconia B1-A71.

Lava Mobiles has launched another tablet in its ETAB series, by the name of E-Tab Connect 3G. Lava E-Tab Connect 3G features a 7-inch screen with WVGA resolution. The tablet runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and supports 3G voice calling.

We had reported earlier in regards to Lava launching this tablet, which will be around Rs. 10,000 and true to word this tablet is priced at Rs. 9,499. Internally, the tablet comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that clocks speed of 1GHz. Other specifications for this tablet are 512MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. For camera, there is 2-megapixel rear camera and a VGA shooter as the front camera.

The tablet packs in a 3,000 mAh battery and comes with pre-installed apps from Hungama, Bigflix, Edukart, Meritnation, Diamond Comics and Readwhere. Apart from that the Lava has partnered with Meritnation to offer free Vedic maths content and a discount of Rs 750/- on any of Meritnation.com package with the purchase of tablet.

Lava had earlier launched ETAB Xtron, which is a 7-inch tablet. The tablet is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, accompanied by 1GB of RAM. There is 8GB of internal memory available on the tablet, which can be extended by up to 32GB via microSD card. Connectivity wise, the tablet doesn't offer 3G and the only way to connect to the Internet is through Wi-Fi. The tablet runs on a 3,500 mAh battery, which according to Lava, delivers up to 4 hours of video playback.

Bharti Airtel launches 4G services in Chandigarh, Mohali & Panchkula

Telecom major Bharti Airtel Wednesday launched the fourth generation (4G) mobile broadband services in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula.

"This launch is another first by Airtel that further enhances the footprint of mobile broadband in India. We are optimistic about the potential of Airtel 4G services and invite our data savvy customers in Punjab to enjoy this world class data experience," Bharti Airtel CTO and Director for Network Services Group, Jagbir Singh said in a statement.

In 2010, Airtel had successfully bid for BWA licence spectrum in Kolkata, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai) circles.

Additionally, Bharti Airtel acquired 49 percent interest in Qualcomm AP's India entities that hold BWA licences in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala.

Before Chandigarh, the company had already launched 4G services based on LTE technology in Kolkata, Bengaluru and Pune, and is currently working towards rolling it out in service areas.

Videocon Removes Roaming Charges on Incoming Calls

There have been talks regarding making roaming free in India for quite some time now. Videocon Mobile Services has announced free incoming calls on its network while on roaming. The customers will not have to get any special recharge done to avail this benefit.

However, on roaming the users will have to shell out Re.1 per minute for a local call and Rs. 1.5 per minute for an STD call. Both local and STD SMS charges while on roaming will be Rs. 3.45 per SMS. While data consumption charges will be 10paise per 10kb.
As per data by COAI, Videocon Mobiles Services had a subscriber base of 2.06 million by February 2013. It is offering services in seven telecom circles.
It is noteworthy that Aircel too had launched a similar initiative in January 2013. The product was dubbed as 'One Nation, One Rate' and claimed to offer one rate for Voice, SMS and Data in home circles and on roaming. However, one had to get a special recharge done to avail the benefits under this scheme.
This special recharge is available in different denomination for different circle, for example in Delhi NCR this recharge costs Rs. 39 and is valid for 30 days. In Aircel's case too subscribers had to be on Aircel network while roaming to be able to enjoy these special rates.

DeepSketch is an interesting new application for Apple’s iPad and iPad 2 that can turn these tablets into a digital stereoscopic 3D sketchbook, using the most common anaglyph 3D (red-cyan). DeepSketch has been developed by Mattis Folkestad with the idea to be easy for use and provide spectacular results… that is if you are good with drawing sketches, there is no need to be that good with the use of stereo 3D as you can quickly get the hand of it.

The DeepSketch application is already available on the App Store for $1.99 USD and it works only on iPads with iOS 5.0 installed, so if you still haven’t upgraded yours to iOS 5 you will have to in order to use this application.

DeepSketch uses a slider for easy manual control of the current depth you are going to draw at (left for deeper, right for closer), so you just need to consider if the specific part of the sketch needs to go deep inside the screen or pop-out and respectively adjust the slider, and there is also automatic control of the depth available to help you out (the depth starts from the point where you set it at and moves either closer or farther from you while you draw).

You just set the depth of the line using the slider and start drawing, the software automatically draw the two colored lines needed to recreate the feeling of volume, so you can draw wearing a pair of anaglyph 3D glasses or without glasses (if you are a bit more advanced 3D user). The key here is that you need to be able to draw pretty well and I’m not that good with drawing by hand, but still I like the end result, even if it is not the prettiest drawing… it is quite fun to use this application. It supports not only the most widely spread red-cyan anaglyph glasses, but cal also work with red-green, red-blue, magenta-green in this and in the reversed order of the color filters. You can also control the minimum and maximum volume in your drawings, so that you will not get too high separation or too low and make it harder for the people that are supposed to like your 3D drawings. The images you have drawn are saved in lossless PNG format, so that the maximum details are preserved and you can access them from the Photo library on the tablet and of course easily upload or share them with others. Just make sure that you have a compatible pair of anaglyph glasses lying around before getting DeepSketch as the application will not be any fun without the glasses that will allow you to actually see the volume in the drawings.

4. Optimize WordPress Images:
The time taken for a blog to load turns out to be longer than you would have thought of while using the image. Step 8Mounting the Drawer Bearing and Rack Gears (X Axis)

We are going to mount this drawer bearing in the same way we did on the Y Axis. Using the included mounting screws, attach it to the crossbars, making sure to leave room on one side for the rack gears.

This time, however, we have some options for mounting the rack gears. We can choose which side to mount them on. This is going to vary depending on how your motors are placed on their blocks. Once you've decided where to place them, though, they are glued in exactly the same way as on the Y Axis. Extend the rack gears slightly off of each end to make sure we have full travel on our steppers.

Again, make sure to try and keep any glue out of the sliding mechanism. If you do allow some glue to enter the mechanism, all is not lost. Fortunately for us, drawer bearings come in pairs, so we'll have one left over anyway. Mount it to the same screw holes and you're set! Just don't do it again! :)

Step 9Attaching the Magnet to the Servo (X Axis)

The chess board needs to be able to move into position and grab a piece. To accomplish this, we achieve a pseudo Z Axis by mounting a magnet to a servo on top of the X Axis. Use epoxy to attach your large magnet to a small piece of wood (Jenga blocks work wonderfully). Once that has dried, attach the wooden block to your servo.

If you're concerned about the torque of your servo, you might consider adding a counterweight to make lifting the magnet less difficult.

At this time you should also extend the leads on your servo motor. Do this the same way you did for your stepper, going one wire at a time and covering it with heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape.

Epoxy bonds best when there is a significant weight holding the two bonding surfaces together. Keep in mind that while 5 minute epoxy dries in 5 minutes, it may not cure for several hours.

Step 10Wiring and Mounting the Motor (X Axis)

We mount and wire our X Axis motor as we did earlier, however we also need to attach our servo assembly. We need to mount the servo as closely to our motor as we can get without interfering with the gearing. This way we are guaranteed to have maximum coverage underneath the board.

Using a piece of wire or cotton swab, carefully apply epoxy to the block where you've decided to attach your servo. If you aren't careful, some epoxy may end up on your stepper motor, rendering it useless. It's a real pain to clear mixed epoxy out of motors, so it's worth the extra time it will take. Firmly hold your servo in place for several seconds, and leave it clamped to dry.

Once your servo is mounted, we can attach the motor block to our bearings. Being cautious as to not get glue in the sliding mechanism and, like earlier, apply the epoxy to the exposed metal the block will touch.

After that is dry, wire the motor like you did before, extending each lead. This time, however, we'll connect it to the other motor terminal. Congratulations, the XY Table is done!

Step 11Wiring the Sensors

Each chess piece has a magnet embedded in its bottom, which makes detecting location really simple. Underneath each square is a magnetic reed switch hooked up to our Arduino mega. When a change is detected, the Arduino spits out the coordinates.

Pull up resistors make sure we don't get false readings from our sensors. 48 of the 64 switches won't need pull up resistors, because the multiplexer has them built in. Unfortunately, we still have to solder 64 sensors. To make this go a lot faster, tin your wires before you try to solder them to the switches. Basically, just add solder to the wire alone before soldering with it. Label each switch with tape as it is completed to avoid a wiring nightmare later!

Hook up each switch to the Arduino as you go along. The multiplexer has a built in ground next to each input, which is really convenient.

To wire the pullup resistors to the built in pins, connect one resistor end to 5V and one to the pin you're using. Then, skipping the resistor, connect one end of your switch to ground and the other directly to your pin.

Find a comfortable chair, because this is going to take a while!

Step 12Place the Magnets

Each chess piece has a magnet embedded in its bottom to trigger the reed switches. The only thing that's important here is that every piece on one side of the board has one polarity (like North), and every piece on the other side has the opposite (like south). If you'd only like the computer to play one color, make sure it is the opposite of the magnet attached to the servo, so they will attract each other.

Other than that, though, this only takes a few minutes.

Step 13Code, Final Assembly + Reflection

The code for this project is surprisingly simple. It takes the reading from the chess board out of terminal, plugs it into a chess algorithm already built into Mac OS X (look inside the Chess.app bundle), and spits out the coordinates back into the Arduino window with some fancy applescript. The algorithm is a fantastic open source project called Sjeng, meaning this will work cross platform as well.

The final assembly for this project is fairly simple. Find something to hold up your sensor grid, and lay that down. Next, place your chess board and pieces on top. You're done! Run the software and give it a whirl.

If you ever get bored of chess, it's really easy to make this into a CNC project. Replace that magnet with an X-Acto knife, flip the entire assembly upside down, and you have a stencil cutter! Replace that X-Acto knife with a pencil and you have a draw-bot. Modify the servo to activate a dremel and you have a CNC machine! The possibilities are, please excuse the cliché, endless!

Reflection

There are changes I would make to this project if I revisit it. First, the mounting of the gears should be improved; a few times the gears would pop off due to the heating of the stepper motors. Proper mounting with screws would fix this. Second, the board gets (fairly severely) out of calibration after a few moves, presumably due to skipped steps, and must be manually moved back to the origin to avoid misalignment. Some potentiometers allowing the board to know its absolute position would fix this. The rails, despite my best efforts, were misaligned, making the last few rows of squares very difficult for the stepper motors, causing them to skip steps and click loudly (bigger steppers would be better). Sometimes the motors would stop altogether and wouldn't be able to make it in those rear squares, rendering a game unplayable without human intervention. Aligning the rails better would fix this. Third, the code could probably be streamlined further; I completed this project when I was relatively new to C and Arduino. I'm sure there's a better way to do this than having an applescript copy and paste into the Arduino environment!

Thoughts on the Epilog Challenge

It's kind of a funny feeling when as a maker you have something that can, well, build other things. An epilog laser would help me in some way with literally everything I make. With this laser I would, on a regular basis, cut solder stencils for surface mount work, make more elegant housings for my projects, and engrave logos onto personal laptops and cell phones. As a student, it would provide me with a small extra source of income from engraving the gadgets of others. Rapid prototyping circuit boards would allow me to take my work to the next level, rather than having to spend several hours etching a PCB just to find out one trace is routed incorrectly. This laser, combined with help from the awesome community here on Instructables, would help me so much in my pursuit of a career in engineering, my ultimate goal.

I'll leave it up to the merit of my Instructable, though, to decide whether I deserve this laser, not the list of sappy thing's I'd do with it. :D Instructables and Epilog have done something great here, and the projects created by this fantastic contest will set a standard of quality for years to come.

Easily Build an Arduino Powered Chess Playing Robot Part -1

Step 1Parts and Materials

Standard wood saw

You may have many of the parts for this project already, but if you don't, the whole list costs ≈ $350, depending on where you get your parts from. Many, many of them can be salvaged, so look to recycle before you buy!

1 Arduino Uno or Diecimila

We'll be using this arduino to drive our stepper motors and servos. You can pick these up just about anywhere online. I got mine from Adafruit. $30

1 Arduino Mega

This is the most expensive item in the project. It'll be dealing with the inputs from each chess square to let the computer know where you've moved. We're using the mega here due to its speed and number of inputs. Adafruit $65

1 Mux Shield

The mux shield (short for multiplexer) gives us even more inputs for our arduino mega. We'll need 64 inputs in total, one for each square. Sparkfun $25

Motor Shield

The motor shield will be controlling our stepper motors and servo. You'll need to solder it together. Adafruit $19.50

1 Large chess board with pieces

This one is a little more self explanatory. We want a large chess board here because the pieces need to be able to move in between each other with disrupting others. Make sure you measure the diameter of the bottoms of the pieces. We'll need that in a moment. I'm not sure where mine is from, but you can pick them up from a flea market for a bargain. The playable area of my board is 24".

64 NO Reed Switches

Reed switches are magnetically activated switches. They'll help us find the location of moved pieces. NO stands for normally open, that is, the circuit is disconnected Digikey ≈$30

16 10K 1/4 Watt Resistors

These are the pull up resistors for the built in digital pins. The mux shield, luckily, has integrated pull downs, so we don't need to worry about those. Digikey ≈ $2

Roughly 90 feet of 30AWG Wire

This is the hookup wire for all of our sensors. Radioshack ≈ $16

Neodymium Magnets to fit your pieces

This is where the measurements from the bottoms of your chess pieces come in handy. You'll need disc magnets to fit underneath each piece. For proper strength, they should be about 1/8" think. A great source for these is K&J Magnetics. ≈ $55

1 Large Neodymium Magnet

This magnet will be attached to the XY table underneath the board, to move each piece around. K&J Magnetics $19

2 Pairs of 24" Drawer Bearings

The size of your bearings will depend on the playable area of your chess board. These allow for the stepper motors to move back and forth underneath the board. Amazon ≈ $30

2 Stepper Motors

Stepper motors can move in very precise increments. In the late 90s they were in just about every piece of tech you could find. The best place to get these are in old dot-matrix printers. You can them at the flea market for next to nothing!

2 Vex Rack and Gear Sets

The rack gears allow the stepper motors to travel on the drawer bearings. See the Step 4 for a more detailed explanation. Vex Store $40

1 Standard Hobby Servo

This servo will be raising and lowering the powerful magnet below the board. You can find them at a hobby shop for ≈ $10, or Amazon ≈ $12

1 2' x 2' Perf Board

The perf board is super thin and will be the mounting surface for all of our reed switches. The price will vary greatly on this one, but I got mine from Home Depot for ≈ $5

1 2' x 2' x 1/2" MDF Board

Similar to the perf board, I got this from Home Depot for ≈ $5

Various lengths of scrap 1"x2" wood

This wood forms the bridge between the X-Axis drawer bearings. Go behind any hardware store and you'll see dumpsters full of this stuff for totally free!

5 Minute Epoxy

This stuff is a godsend. It's used for just about everything in this project, from mounting motors to attaching the rack gears. I'm in love -- and I picked mine up from Radio Shack for $3

1 Wood Saw

You probably already have this one, but if you don't, I picked mine up at Ace Hardware for $10 a couple of years ago.

Step 2Design and Code Explanation

That parts list is a bit scary if you're not sure what everything is going to do, so here's how many of the pieces will be used.

You can see in the images below that each stepper motor can move freely about its axis thanks to the drawer bearings. On the Y Axis, each rail is connected with the wooden structure, so that the X Axis may sit atop it. Also on the X Axis is the servo that raises and lowers the powerful magnet, so that it may position itself before moving pieces.

Feel free to download the sketchup file and mess around if you're not sure of anything.

Another interesting element of this design is how to code talks with the arduino and motors. We need to address each square as a set of coordinates so that we may find slope and distance, however the traditional method of labeling squares A1, A2, etc. doesn't work particularly well in code. Standard (x,y) coordinates are much friendlier. Those coordinates, however, need to be in the form of a single number. What I ended up doing is assigning each square to a number, as you can see in image #3. Those numbers don't really work as coordinates on an 8x8 chess board, however, because we use a base 10 number system.

To solve that issue, we take the base 10 number of each square and convert it to base 8 using the modulus operator in C. 27, for example, is 33 in base 8, with the first digit being the x coordinate and the second the y. If you count over three squares and up three squares, voila! You end up on square 27. This converted coordinate system ends up looking like image #4.

Step 3Mounting the Drawer Bearings (Y Axis)

The drawer bearings are what allow the axes to move in their respective direction. The mounting instructions may vary slightly depending on the brand, but usually it's as simple as driving a couple of screws.

The only reason I've made this its own step is that aligning the bearings perfectly is key. Should you fail to do this, and they both point slightly outwards, they'll stop at some arbitrary point and refuse to move once you connect them. Save yourself a lot of trouble and use something you know is square as a reference for alignment. The corner of a book is perfect.

Step 4Building the Motor Mount (Y Axis)

The stepper motors we'll be using have fantastic torque, but are circular. This means mounting them to our bearings later on will be nearly impossible, unless we build a square mount. To build one, find a hole saw with a similar diameter to your motor. You'll want to use a drill press rather than a portable drill for this, so I borrowed my school's.

Once you've cut the hole, slice the circle in half to get two mounts. This chipped the tips of my semicircle, so I used some 220 grit sandpaper to clean up the edge.

My steppers came with mounting screw holes, which line up well with the wooden frame. I used the smallest screws I could find. Mine fit so well that it wasn't necessary, but you might consider adding a bit of epoxy to strengthen the bond.

Step 5Installing the Rack Gears (Y Axis)

The rack gears are what allow the motor to latch onto a surface to pull itself along. Your physics teacher probably defined them as a way to convert rotational energy to linear.

Again, we use the epoxy to attach the gears onto the MDF. In addition to heavily applying epoxy to the board itself, make sure some is spread on the side of the drawer bearing, that way there is stability in two dimensions. Do your best to prevent epoxy from getting in places it shouldn't be -- you may gum up your motor.

It works out that the rack gears extend a little bit off of each end. This is a good thing -- it enables the gear to travel the full length of the board without running off. The stepper motor will be offset just enough that if the gears only covered the board's length the whole motor assembly would get stuck at one end.

Also install the circular gears onto your motor at this time. Mine had a set-screw, but you may wish to use some JB weld to hold your gear in place. If you go that route, the joint needs to fully cure before you try to use it, or you risk the gear popping off!

Step 6Wiring and Mounting the Motor (Y Axis)

The leads that come attached to the stepper motors are very short. Because the Arduino is mounted off the board, the wires need to be at least the length of one side. That made mine about 2' 5" long. Heat shrink tubing is your friend here -- we're using enough power that it might arc if you're not careful.

If your stepper motor has 5 wires, you're all set. If there are 6, however, it means you have to connect your center taps. Jason Babcock has a great tutorial on reverse-engineering your motors. In my case, however, the wires were the same color.

After extending the wires, the center taps go into the center of one of your motor hubs. The wires from one coil go to one terminal on the motor shield, and from the other coil to the other terminal. At this time we also hook up our 24v 1A power supply to the motor shield. If you get the polarity wrong on this, your motor shield is toast.

After trimming the motor mounting block to about 4 inches, it's time to attach it to our bearings. Mix up the epoxy, and liberally apply it to the area of the bearing the block will touch.

Also, if you have any pets, be sure to animal-proof the room you're working in. Cats seem to have an affinity for knocking over things that are drying.

Step 7Mounting the Crossbars (X Axis)

Atop the Y Axis sits a cross-bar which will hold the X Axis. To do this, we mount another block on the opposite Y Axis bearing. This will across from the motor mounting block.

Then we cut two 2' lengths of 1"x2" wood and mount them to the blocks with wood screws. Make sure these screws are in tight, or the bearings might not move at the same time. You might consider adding some wood-glue to lock them more tightly in place. While these cross bars need to be large enough to support our X Axis bearing, we want to use the least amount possible to avoid unnecessary weight. If the entire X assembly weighs too much, our Y Axis stepper motor won't have enough torque to move efficiently, or, if it's really heavy, at all.

Test that your bearings move evenly with each other. The crossbars should be as close to perpendicular with the bearings as possible.

Easily Cheat a Polygraph Test (Lie Detector)

These tests can be a source of tremendous anxiety, even for people with nothing to hide, and for good reason. Polygraph examinations are interrogations, and it is all too common for innocent people to fail them for no reason, resulting in the denial of employment or false criminal accusations. Fortunately, they are easy to trick, so follow these steps to take control of your interrogation.

Prepare The Night Before

Learn about polygraphs. If your career or court case depends on it, wouldn’t you do as much research as you can? Read about what they are and how the process generally works. The most important thing to know is that polygraphy is not an exact science. In fact, to the extent that it is a science at all, it is one in its infancy and one which frequently produces incorrect results.
Find out what the tester is looking for. A polygraph examination is administered to help find out specific information, such as whether you’re a spy or whether you’ve used drugs. If your test is prompted by a specific incident, you probably know what the examiner is looking for. For pre-employment screening tests and the like, research the company or agency’s policies to determine what you can and cannot admit.
Practice countermeasures in advance. Practicing these beforehand can almost guarantee that you “pass” the polygraph examination, but only if you do them right. Once you read about the measures, be sure to practice them well before the test so that you’re thoroughly prepared.
Approach your whole “polygraph day” as a test. Treat the polygraph examination as an extreme job interview. Dress conservatively and appropriately, and try to make a good impression before the test. Be sure to arrive on time and, unless it's the direst of circumstances, do not reschedule or attempt to postpone the exam.
Be aware that your every move is very likely being observed the moment you arrive at the testing location. There may be hidden cameras in the waiting room and the restrooms, and there is almost certainly a camera or two-way mirror in the polygraph room. Your polygraph examination begins long before you are hooked up to the machine and ends only when you’ve left the testing location.
Take a high quality anti-perspirant stick and put it on all your fingers and palms the night before. Repeat the next morning. This constricts the sweat glands that glavonmeters pick up (increased sweating is often seen as an indicator of lying). The deodorant is also a good idea on your forehead, nose and under-arms.

Prepare Right Before the Test

Remember that the polygrapher is not your friend. The polygrapher may try to convince you that he or she is on your side and will help you out if you’ll just be truthful. This is deception; don’t buy it.
Beware of pretest tricks. Polygraphers will frequently attempt to instill fear in the subject or convince the subject of the accuracy of the polygraph machine. The theory is that the more you fear that you may be caught, the greater your physiological reactions will be. Don’t believe the hype. The polygrapher may also try to elicit reactions from you based on fear. For example, he or she may say that you need to wash your hands so the machine can accurately read your sweat output. A hidden camera in the bathroom may then catch the subject going into the bathroom as directed, but not washing his or her hands.
Identify the types of questions you are being asked. There are three basic types of questions you will be asked: relevant, irrelevant and control. Irrelevant questions are those that are obvious, such as “What is your name” or “Have you ever eaten pasta?” Relevant questions are the important ones, such as “Did you leak that memo to the media,” “Have you ever stolen money from an employer,” or “Have you ever sold drugs?” Control questions are those against which your reactions to relevant questions will be compared. These are usually questions to which (just about) everybody can answer “yes,” but which everybody is uncomfortable honestly answering. Examples might include, “Have you ever cheated in a game,” or “Have you ever stolen anything?”
This is relevant only to tests where the organization performing the test did not summon you for a pre-test "coordination of expectations," a method used in many military and state charactered organizations. In these situations, they will inform you of all the "relevant" questions that will be asked in the polygraph test few days ahead.
Conceal your knowledge of polygraphy. The polygrapher may ask you, before the test if you’ve done any research on polygraph tests or what you know about them. Do not disclose that you’ve done extensive research. Act as though you don’t know much about polygraph examinations, but that you do believe polygraphy to be a science and polygraphs to be reliable (or at least do not exhibit any doubt as to their reliability). The polygrapher may try to trick you by mentioning certain technical terms and acronyms such as, “Your test came back NDI.” While you will know that “NDI” means “no deception indicated,” you need to act as though you have no idea what it means. Too much knowledge of the process may make the polygrapher think you’ve got something to hide, even if you don’t.

Cheat the Polygraph Test

Say only what you need to. “Yes” or “No” answers should be all you need for most of the test. Resist the temptation to explain your answers or to go into details, although the polygrapher may try to get you to do so. Be courteous and cooperative, but do not offer any more information than is absolutely necessary.
Don’t admit anything relevant. No matter what the lines on the chart look like, nothing is more certain or damaging than your confession. The polygrapher will most likely try to convince you that he or she can “see” a lie in your polygraph, even if there’s nothing abnormal there. Don’t fall for it. However, you want to appear honest, so don’t be afraid to make minor admissions to control questions. Just make sure you don’t admit anything in these that can invite further questioning or that may be construed as relevant.

Remember that the job of polygraphers is to extract confessions. In many ways, the whole examination is a complex ruse to trick you into confessing something.

Answer questions firmly, seriously, and without hesitation. This is no time to joke around or try to be crafty. You want to appear earnest, cooperative and resolute.
Breathe normally. Except during control questions, you should try to maintain a breathing rate of 15-30 breaths per minute. Do not breathe too deeply.
Alter breathing rate with control questions. The polygrapher will compare your physiological responses to control questions to your responses to relevant questions. If the deviation from normal during control questions exceeds the deviation from normal during relevant questions, you will pass. If you react more to a relevant question than to control questions, the polygrapher will perceive (rightly or wrongly) that you are lying in response to something relevant and you will likely fail the polygraph.
Change your breathing pattern when a control question is asked. You can make it faster or slower, hold your breath for a couple seconds after an exhalation, or breathe more shallowly. Do this for 5-15 seconds and return to your normal breathing pattern before the next question.
Do the math. Count backwards in your head as quickly as possible or do some quick long division. This will help change your blood pressure and heart rate.
Clench your bum. Doing this will increase both your perspiration and your heart rate. Only do this when a control question is asked.
Put a tack in your shoe. Before answering your questions, gently prick your foot with it. The pain response will increase your heart rate. Again, only do this on control questions.
Handle the post-test interview. After you’re disconnected from the machine, the polygrapher may leave you in the room for a while and come back. The polygrapher may then claim to “know” that you are lying about something. This is a trick. Remain calm and firmly, but politely repeat your denial. Don’t change or augment your answers and decline extended post-test interviewing if possible.
