An Iraq War photographer explains the egregious mistakes in “The Hurt Locker” that make it an unrealistic depiction of the Iraq War.

While I like the movie, I agree with this part of the article the most:

While many have praised the movie as anti-war, I believe — in a counter-intuitive way — that it glamorizes war.

<strike>Sgt. James is meant to be an anti-hero, for sure, but the way he is introduced to us in the film is so action-hero that I find it hard to believe that many young (and old too, likely) men wouldn’t have instantly wanted to be him. I get the feeling that the film is still a little too sympathetic to him to properly make its statement about the consequences of his actions. And, It makes me wonder if it is not intentionally ambiguous in order to soak up some extra box office dollars from the ignorant.</strike>

Actually, I take that back. I think Sgt. James is more of a casualty here than a villain. Still, his return to the war in the end takes a mysteriously triumphant air…

thetenssf:

I knew it would come to this eventually. As a former employee, I am pretty sure Yelp will beat this one, but even so, it gets to the core of one of the reasons why I left: by not focusing enough on public perception of issues like these, Yelp is doing irreparable harm to their own reputation, regardless of the truth. Eventually no one will trust the reviews on the site enough to actually use them to determine where to go, and other services are rising that have the potential to replace their stockpile of location-based data. Once a tipping point is reached, a lack to user interest will lead to a lack of ad sales, and then congratulations, you’ve killed your business model by not giving a shit.

Kind of too bad this isn’t Google’s class action lawsuit instead now, isn’t it?

"But the legislation goes beyond securing the right to self-governance for Native Hawaiians. Let’s go shopping! [dive into mark]

Simplicity is hard. Let’s go shopping! [dive into mark]:
I spend a lot of time thinking about how to get rid of things in my apartment that I don’t need anymore. The problem is, most of it is stuff that I’m pretty sure no one else needs, either, just junk that I have accumulated over the past 10 years. I don’t want to just throw it away, I just want it to disappear. I would pay for someone to come over to my house and weed out all the unimportant crap, as long as they assure me it won’t just end up in a landfill.

Several times during 2009 when I left town on vacation, I would look at all I had with me at the time (usually just a rolling carry-on of clothes, my netbook and a camera) and thought, “this is everything I need right now, no more, no less”. I actually regretted having to return to my house full of crap to confront everything I don’t need again.

There was even a time when I was in New York and got a call from my landlord, asking why the fire dept. was at our building. I said I didn’t know, I was in NYC, and he said, opps, sorry, I’ll call you back when I know more. For a couple of hours, I pondered the possibility of having lost everything in a fire, and was horrified at first, but after a while, felt sort of liberated. Sure, it would be pain to replace my social security card and passport, and I would lose all my film negatives from when I used to actually shoot film, but other than those items, I really wouldn’t miss much. I worried that this might mean I’m unsentimental, but came to the conclusion that really, I am sentimental about people and places, not things. I had almost made peace with this when I got word from my landlord that it was just a fire alarm test. I was almost disappointed.

I just want to start over again, in so many ways.

EXPLICIT CONTENT ONLY

EXPLICIT CONTENT ONLY:
NWA, with only the good parts.

"The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.
