For this series I spent two days wandering around the streets of Wellington to collect source imagery, undertaking time-based observations at intersections, bus stops and the railway station.

Below is a sneaky peek of the first completed painting. It is 100cm x 150cm and still awaiting a name!

Opening night for ‘Art on Life‘ is 5.30pm 9th March and the exhibition runs until the 8th April. The Academy Galleries are open 10am – 5pm 7 days at 1 Queens Wharf, Wellington.

The first five exhibitions confirmed at Black Asterisk, starting March 8, are from artists new to the gallery. These include exhibitions of photography by Tracy Porteous, sculpture by Graeme Hitchcock and painting by Sue Ready, Lisa Chandler and Melinda Butt. Throughout February selected works by these artists will be on display, some of which are taken from their exhibitions as a preview. February will also be a chance to see new and previous work from artists already seen and sampled at Black Asterisk, some of whom have full exhibitions confirmed later in the year. Colin Luxton has several new large portraits to show, this time made using oils. Lyndon Keene has a new selection of his etchings, and Victoria Cassells has a complete collection of her evocative waxed oils on the way. Selections of work, both seen and unseen, will also be on display from previous contributors atBlack Asterisk Catherine Carter, Stuart Broughton, Jane Simcock, Delia Woodham, Denise Batchelor, Karley Feaver and Alissa West. Utilising the spaces of the gallery in between the many exhibitions booked we are taking the opportunity to profile work and artists in a free and interesting way. 4 layers of gesso and 4 days later I have finished preparing the canvases and I am enjoying the feeling of anticipation one gets with blank canvases in the studio.

These canvases are for new paintings for the ‘Art on Life’ Exhibition at the Academy Galleries, Wellington in March this year. The paintings will be derived from my time-based observations at railway stations, bus stations and intersections in Wellington earlier this year.

Right off to the studio . . . . . . .

This is the first time I have entered the competition and the judge chose only 82 paintings out of 320 entries to hang.

Opening night on the 18th January was fantastic. About 350 people came through the gallery so there was a great buzz and vibe. I received lots of positive comments on my paintings which was very satisfying.

I have had several exciting opportunities presented to me as a result of the exhibition and I will post more news as details are finalised.

Karen (sculptor) and Mike Walters (jeweller) have set up the space as a contemporary gallery and workspace. Karen has handpicked artists from around New Zealand and I am pleased to announce Kereru Gallery will be showcasing my work.

I am looking forward to taking a break over Christmas and relaxing with my family.

However, I do have an exciting schedule of exhibitions, events and workshops lined up for next year. Here is a sneak preview of the first couple of months . . .

If you are in Auckland during the holidays, my Graduation Exhibition is at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design, 130 St Georges Bay Road, Parnell. Opening night is 18th January 5.30pm – 7.30pm all welcome. The exhibition runs 19th – 21st January 1pm-6pm and 22nd January 10am-3pm.

Following this I am being featured in the ‘Art on Life’ group exhibition at the Academy Galleries in Wellington March/April. For this project I am undertaking an ‘urban wandering’ project in the Cuba Street area and then developing a new series of paintings. Opening Night 9th March.

I am exhibiting my MFA show Negotiating the Non-Place at Reflections Gallery, Nelson in March – opening night Tuesday 20th March.

Thanks to those who took part in my first weekend workshop this year, I really appreciated your enthusiasm and hard work!
I plan to hold a couple more acrylic workshops in March and October next year – more information to come in the New Year.
