“Great Horned Owl” is a scratch board art work I did from a photo I took of a great horned owl.
I took the picture of the owl at an animal exhibit at the Trailside Museum. The Trailside museum showcases animals common to the northeastern region.

The owl was on a man-made perch. I decided to place the owl in a natural setting in my scratch board art work.

This scratch board art work will be among a few scratch board art works that will be on exhibit at two BankRI Gallery locations in 2010.
In the month of February, This exhibit will be at the BankRI Pitman St. branch in Providence, RI.
In the month of March, this exhibit will be at One Turks Head in downtown Providence. There will be a reception the third Thursday of March, 5pm-8pm, part of Providence Gallery Night.
So mark your calendar if you’re going to be in the area at this time to check it out.

Summer has wound down. September is here and the girls are back to school. Oldest in 2nd grade and youngest entering kindergarten. Both girls are in the same school. How amazing.

There was definitely a crispness to the air signaling the change.

A change for me as well. First time in a long time, I’ll have more of a full day to myself. Some feelings of “what-to-do-with-my-days” swirl in my mind. Oh, It’s not like I don’t have anything to do, but more like, ”How will my day flow now”. Time has slipped by noticeably and I wonder.

It’s OK to be still. Good to think and explore. Change doesn’t have to feel like a weight . It could be as light as air.

Light and air. A friend spoke of that at a forum I go to. Just the words brought up a wonderful image.

It also brought up an interesting and wonderful memory.

“Light and Air”

I used to have a Fear of being in water over my head. I didn’t want to continue to have this fear when I had children. So I took classes at the local Y in Quincy. I slowly worked on relaxing and taking it in. Focusing on lessening the panic and replacing it with some comfort and skill.

Interesting to note: If I was in the shallower end of a pool and under water swimming I was just fine, like on a cloud. So the Fear was just a security issue when stopped in place.

When the students and I had met our goals, the instructor had us try an “easy going” dive in from the edge of pool into the deep end. I dove in and actually did a somersault under water ( guess i bent alot in the dive) but straightened out beautifully. During that slight moment of “fog” I just floated for a moment, like on a cloud. In that moment I noticed where the light was coming from: Above at the surface. I swam to it. I wasn’t the least bit out of breathe either. It was amazing. What a situation to come through. So empowering and peaceful at the same time.

Fear tends to leave one at a stand still. It ’s part of “Natures protective tool”.

Yet when there’s no fear to fear, we can find a way to move again and move forward.

“Sleeping Fox” is a pastel painting of a red fox.

This Red Fox was done from a picture I did at The Trailside Museum in Milton, MA. The Trailside museum is where one can get an up close look at wild animals common to the Northeast region of the U.S.A. and learn about them.

One day I did some sketching of some of the animals there.

At the Arts in the Park in Randolph, I decided to do a demonstration with my fox sketch, and made this pastel painting.

“Sleeping Fox” pastel painting is for sale. There are prints of this image for purchase too.

“Drawing on Passion”

My mom recalls I started drawing when “I first picked up a pencil”. I have always enjoyed drawing. Though there were some times I’d go for a little while without doing so, I have always come back to it over and over. I would seem almost lost if I didn’t take time to draw, like something was missing. I’m also very thankful for my parents and teachers that encouraged me to “keep it up”.

Thus, I pursued a career in art. I felt following my talents and strengths would lead me to where I was meant to go in the world. I can say there have been ups and downs, yet I wouldn’t change a thing. I love creating and so that’s what I do.

I’ve always felt that no matter where I’m at in life, I’ll be able to create.

We attended a Billy Joel/Elton John concert recently. The Piano men of Rock. Billy Joel and Elton John may be reaching their senior years, yet they continue to play and create some awesome music. They’ll be rocking to the end of time.

On the same note, you can count on me creating on and on and sharing my art and journey.

Here’s one of my newest images I recently did in scratch board.

African Elephant.

Some one commented on this when I posted it at wetcanvas.com. They said it reminded them of the “Baby Elephant Walk”. Ha, I remember that song and can play it on the piano…well sort of. I’m a bit rusty on the piano, though I enjoy playing some times.

Can you feel the rhythm?

To see my latest scratch board images (part of my journey to 2010 BankRI exhibit) Visit my Blog.

Thank you for being a part of my journey.

“Jumper Pony” is a charcoal pencil drawing I did from a reference photo I took at a horse jumping show.

A young rider and pony jumping a fence. It was exciting to watch them do their round on the course.

“The Creative Side”

This past week has been filled with sadness and shock with the recent celebrity deaths.

Though we knew about Farrah Fawcett’s recent battle with cancer, we never knew the time of her passing would be so soon. Her career as an actress blossomed when she was in the TV show “Charlie’s Angels” as a stunning blonde. She shined later in a number of films. She was a wonderful, very talented and beautiful actress. She showed strength and beauty of character. How bright she shined.

Then there was the shocker of the week: Micheal Jackson dies. An incredible singer and performer. He and his brothers entered the music world as “The Jackson 5″.

He then went solo and brought us “Thriller” and the “moonwalk”. His performances were electric.

I will admit I felt he was a pretty strange character at times and wondered how he seemed to practically fall off the edge on a personal level. Yet listening to his music and seeing him perform was amazing.

There is that creative side.

I recently got an email from my sister. It had a link to a YouTube movie: Jim Henson’s, “The Frog Prince”. Do you remember this movie?

I think it was one of Jim Hensons first Muppet movies. Yes, Jim Henson who moved puppetry to a new level with “The Muppets”. I grew up with “Kermit, the Frog”. This movie featured “Kermit” and “Robin” with a few other frogs, Muppet friends and actors/actresses. My sisters and I watched this movie years ago. I was so enchanted by it. I remembered it vividly. Well it’s still around, and now on YouTube.

Jim Henson would also die sooner than we had expected. What a gift he gave the world through his creativity. He let the creativity guide him in his endeavors.

I could pick out others, as Walt Disney.

Then there is a local story of a dancer, “Miss Jessie M.”. She died at a young age after a battle with ovarian cancer. She danced so much through her life. She danced every moment she could. She lit up the stage. She was an inspiration to watch. This year’s Dance recital was in memory of her. It was an emotional recital. There were tears of sadness and tears of joy. There was a sense of being thankful for the moments to share our love for dance, music, art and ourselves.

She is a reminder to us that we need to share that “creative side” and love.

Act on the present, the“Now”.

“The present” is the gift.
