Currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and recently having returned from a two year stint in Europe and the United Kingdom, MPI Project has his sights set on the world. Having gained respect in some of the top clubs in Amsterdam and London, he now brings his sound (big bass-lined Electro and Breakbeat , with Minimal and Tech House influences) to you from Johannesburg, South Africa, where he continues to forge his original work on a combination of ground-breaking structures and elements taken from music’s big dish-plate.

His first international success came in 2004 with the signing of his first off-shore record deal with American label, Bassmint Music. After arriving on the European continent in 2007, it literally took ‘no time at all’ for his talent (both as live performer and top producer) to be noticed and he soon signed his first European record deal with Be Yourself Music, home to labels such as Big & Dirty, High Contrast, Dirty Soul and Marco V’s own, InCharge. This ‘meteoric’ rise to recognition is not undeserved and is a shining testament to 15 years of playing and producing on 4 continents. MPI Project, owner and manager of three record labels that collectively span the electronic music spectrum, has to date released more than 50 original tracks and remixes, cultivating fresh and phat Breakbeat, Drum ‘n Bass, House, Techno and Electro, both digitally and on vinyl. Recently he produced a Nirvana bootleg that has been downloaded more that 20 000 times to date.

MPI Project has promoted successful club nights in Johannesburg, London and Amsterdam and has pumped world famous venues like Club NL (Amsterdam); Pacha(London); Empire (Brisbane); Timbuk2 (Bristol); Mad (Athens); Venta (Tel-Aviv); Zulu Bar (London); Winston Kingdom (Amsterdam); Allenby 58 (Tel-Aviv); Zebra (Amsterdam); Carfax (Johannesburg); The Bang Bang Club (Cape Town); Fiction (Cape Town) to name a few. He has also supported many International acts that include King Unique, Sebastien Ingrosso, Brian Cross, Pendulum, Dieselboy, Raiden, Dylan, Smashing Pumpkins, Shimon, Jazzanova, Randall, Tony ChaCha and many more.

MPI Project’s multi-genre releases can be found on record labels Big & Dirty, Fracture Records, Kloraform, Yucatech Recordings, Sheer Music, Destination?, Aleph Recordings, Grooved Music, Casual Kickback, Soulcandi, GTA, Pinkertone, Wot Records, OGCJM, Breakdown, Knowledge Mag UK and Timecode under different aliases (Niteanday, D-Sine, Dubtraction, Terrorbyte, Kode5, Polits & Sparkes and Sub_traction).

MPI Project’s calendar is now open for Live Performances & DJ Sets worldwide as well as, press requests and interviews.

LU33, Sahin Meyer

A long time ago two people were born 800kms and 5 years apart. They learnt to talk, walk, skip, jump and then DJ. Then they met and it was love at first sight. Now that they’re married they had to share everything, so each with only one turntable they couldn’t DJ and in order for them to carry on playing they had to combine the two and thus Sahin Meyer was born.

Sahin Meyer (Linda and Shy Jacobs) have been gaining momentum ever since they decided to drop their old monikers Sweet Sarah & Shy and join in holy matrimony aswell as in DJ and production. They have both being DJing & putting on parties in the same city of Durban South Africa since 1999, but only met 3 years ago, a year later they made a permanent move to London to push their passion for all things deep. Even though they come from completely different backgrounds they share a passion for the deeper end of house and techno. It wasn’t always that way but none of that matters anymore.

Shy had a dream to play in the football world cup but it was just a dream. They decided to share the dream like everything and make a track called World Cup Of The Future, out of pride for South Africa. Now, as luck would have it, their World Cup 2010 EP will be out soon (December 2009) on Andre Lodemann & Daniel Best’s highly respected label, Best Works.

LU31, Ivan Turanjanin @ Sub Club (Scotland)

Listenup is proud to present Ivan’s 2-hour opening set for Kevin Saunderson at the Sub Club in Glasgow, Scotland as part of our most recent podcast.

Ivan established himself as a major player in the Cape Town and South African music scene as both a reputable event promoter and also as a prolific DJ and vinyl junkie with a sophisticated and diverse choice in music.

Ivan also being one of the co – founders of South Africa’s longest running techno night, Killer Robot continues to bring unvarying quality to a committed dancefloor each and every week. Each installment is a different journey from dubbed out deepness through to the hi-tech sounds of Detroit, Berlin and beyond, introducing artists like Seth Troxler, Butane, Bodycode to name a few to South Africa’s ever-growing underground music scene.

On the 24th of July 2009 Ivan supported the legendary Kevin Saunderson at the Sub Club in Glasgow, Scotland. Respected and acknowledged around the world as one of the three Detroit Techno innovators, Kevin Saunderson is a legend in his own right, who helped to reshape the future of Dance music as we know it today.

“Liam began his musical career around the age of 8 with live sets on his mum’s pots and pans, then moved on to formal classical training in piano, saxophone, voice, musical history and theory. In the 1990s, Liam began gigging in his home town as a drummer with a local rock and punk bands – until he moved to London, and discovered psytrance. Things would never be the same ….

Settling in Cape Town in the late 90s where the outdoor party scene was blooming, DJing soon followed. But, inspired by international producers coming to blast Cape Town dancefloors such as Etnica, Dino Psaras, Joti Sidhu, Koxbox, the Flying Rhino crew and others, he was inspired (more like blown away!) and had to begin producing for himself. So Liam disappeared into the studio, and the Slug project was born …

This unique sound began to catch the attention of psy lovers – first at home in the Cape Town scene – and then worldwide. Since the release of his debut album in 2004, Liam has played from Cape Town to Canada, Tokyo to Tel Aviv – gigging on literally every continent both live and as a DJ. In the process he has generated a dedicated following, and released over 80 tracks across various albums and projects.

Teaming up with respected producer Shift both to produce and release music, he is now also a co-owner of the Nexus Media record label, which has released the some of the cream of South African and international psytrance producers over the last few years, as well as being home to their acclaimed “”Pitch Hikers”" collaboration project.

2009 sees the next installment of the Slug story being prepared for release, as well as the public launch of “”20ft Stereo”", Liam’s new project showcasing his interests in techno, progressive and house.”

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
I have liked a lot of the variety I have heard in psytrance over the years, and this has given my personal sound a somewhat schizophrenic edge. On the one hand I like it hard, in the style of guys like 3DVision, Shift, Lost&Found etc. On the other hand I love melodic influences and more groovy morning sounds too. So I try to combine all these in each track, and the result is as you hear it

What/who have been Influences in your life?
Performing music is a huge influence. Both performing and watching others perform has probably been the biggest factor in pushing me to do what I do. Listening to music coming in at a close second. Massive musical influences on me have been Bob Marley and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, as well as blues (e.g. John Lee Hooker).

Who are some of your favorite producers?
“I’m hestitant to mention any “”all time favourites”" .. since it’s always in flux, but a current snapshot would be:
psytrance: Shift, Phatmatix, Lost&Found, Xatrik
other: Justice, Stimming, Dirty South, Trentemoller, Riktam&Bansi, Deadmau5, Sebastian Leger”

Who are some of your favorite DJ’s
“My friends, of course!

Aleph & Artifakt (Timecode)
Bruce (a Cape Town standard!)
Shift (Nexus Media)
Jester (Peak Rec)

Bascially ppl who put some thought and passion into what they do and are prepared to be adventurous, or perhaps even stubborn, in the face of trends.”

Best memories as a DJ?
Playing those sets that seem to just “”work”" effortlessly
When one of the best tracks in the set is one you wrote
Being on the dancefloor and hearing another DJ rip it up with a track you wrote
Playing to 10 000 + ppl
Having people in the audience (who dont even speak very good english) write and sign very sincere thank you note on a napkin and passing it forward to the DJ box.

What equipment do you use?
PC with Cubase and VSTs for studio production
Macbook for travelling work and live sets
Nord Lead 3 performance synth for studio work and live sets
CDJ100s for home mixing
TascamUS122 sound card / audio interface
Roland DS7 sutdio monitors

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
In the live sets, it’ll be the latest output from my studio and collaboration projects (see question 2 above!).
In the DJ sets, some of my own mixed with new tracks from producers I’m lucky enough to get new unreleased tracks from: Phatmatix, Lost&Found, Shift, Abomination etc. This tends to push the DJ set in a harder direction than the live set.

Take us through this mix
This is the 1 hour set I played @ the Groovy Troopers / Organik party @ The Assembly, Cape Town, 11 July 2009

1) Slug – The Mullet
This track is a new one I’ve just sold to BMSS Records, a new German label. It’s called the Mullet cos it’s all business up front, but a total party in the back! The jazzy piano chord refrain is me testing a new piano VST I got …

2) Slug vs Painkiller – Roll Feature
This is a collaboration with Painkiller, a good friend and a great producer. It was on his album from 2008, and it’s been a regular in my sets since we wrote it.

3) Slug – Vibrate the Body
New, unreleased, coming on my next album. Latest SLUG flavours reflected here.

4) Slug vs Xatrik – Check Positive
Xatrik is the first guy I began to produce with. So writing this was a bit of “”back to my roots”" in late 2008. Released on Aussie label Digital Psionics.

5) Zion Linguist – Plugged In (Slug remix)
Remix I did of the title track from the last Zion Linguist album. It works every time!

6) Slug – Random
A very personal, Sluggy piece, from my last album. Gets me going. Makes the floor bounce.

7) Slug – Hardwired
Also from the last album, this one is me trying to say no to melody, just keeping the harder grooves turning over and over.

8 ) Slug vs Shift (Pitch Hikers) – Look to Windward
I always try and include one Pitch Hikers track (Pitch Hikers being my project with Shift). This is one we did around end 2008, probably coming out on our next album. There’s something special about a good collaboration, taking your own stuff to a new level it wouldnt have reached on its own. This one is solid tech in the begnning and just mental in the end.

9) Slug vs Lost & Found – Synthetic
Probably my most sucessfull track of the last while (feedback wise). This is something Gerhard and I wrote in 2007, but it was only just released on BOA Group / Nutek Recs (Israel). It’s very epic, so I like to end with it.”

If you want to add anything which you didnt get a chance to above, drop it in here
Best or wierdest- some girl trying with all her might to pull me out from behind the booth, she litterally was hanging onto my clothes, lifting herself off of the ground and using all her weight to pull me out from behind the booth whilst mixing. About You - Biography
"Influenced early by the likes of Sibot and Markus Wormstorm, loved that they pushed the boundaries of music in SA! nowadays I do my thing got a couple of projects on the loose: zim-dollar-bill, dankliver etc. and am affiliated with African Dope records.Loving the stuff thats coming out of Cape Town lately- real hot shit!"

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
Wobble basslines/ hard ass drums/ glitch sounds. I like stuff that makes my face scruntch up!

What/who have been Influences in your life?
Sibot/Markus Wormstorm/Mix n Blend/SFR/Hyphen/Bassnectar/Tipper/Tribe Called Quest/Dank/Deltron 3030

Who are some of your favorite producers?
Bassnectar/Sibot/SFR/Hyphen/Dank/Mix N Blend/Naartjie(PH Fat)

Who are some of your favorite DJrsquo;s
Sibot/ Mix n Blend/SFR+Hyphen/Spekta + six-six-one/Bloody Beetroots/Gravedanger

Best memories as a DJ?
Best or wierdest- some girl trying with all her might to pull me out from behind the booth, she litterally was hanging onto my clothes, lifting herself off of the ground and using all her weight to pull me out from behind the booth whilst mixing. I eventually had to call someone to my aid! Sibots backup dancer at Sound Kiln in grahamstown

What equipment do you use?
Serato SL1, 2 * Vestax PDX 2000 MKII pro, any decent scratch or DJ mixer (rane/ pioneer)

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
Well I play to the party. I can play dubstep/chilled/glitch/electro/nu-disko--but expect heavy drops and mad basslines-- stuff that'll make grandma loose her teeth!

Take us through this mix/set
This stuff is basically the dubstep that i have been listening to/ playing out. The mix starts off heavy then lightens up a bit, then gets heavy again.... there are a lot of local artists: Liver/SFR/Hyphen/Mix n Blend/Narch.... because i think that our local stuff is ripping it at the moment hard! Dont be fooled, dudes overseas are chomping at the bit for the new Cape Town stuff- and thats a quote.
