La Rinconada is a small mining town in Peru which is located nearly 17,000 feet above sea level. It is considered the “highest” permanent settlement in the world, and it is this stunning geography that makes it so desolate. The city is located on a permanently frozen glacier, and can only be reached by truck via treacherous and winding mountain roads.

Despite an average annual temperature of just 1.2c it has a population of 30,000 people. This is due to the gold mining operation in the local mines. Workers are unpaid for 30 days, but on the 31st they may keep whatever Ore or nuggets that they can carry on their person.

Located literally at the bottom of the world, Antarctica is easily one of the most remote places on the face of the Earth. There are no native inhabitants to the continent, but it can home up to 1258 scientists and researchers.

Cape York, Peninsula, a huge expanse of untouched wilderness located on the country’s northern tip. The region has a population of approximately 18,000 people, most of whom are part of the country’s aboriginal tribes, and it is considered to be one of the largest undeveloped places left in the world.

At 836,000 square miles in size, Greenland is the world’s largest island, but its tiny population of 57,000 people means that it’s also the most desolate. And of all the towns in Greenland, perhaps none is as remote as Ittoqqortoormiit.

Also known as the “Desolation Islands” for their sheer distance from any kind of civilization, the Kerguelen Islands are located in the southern Indian Ocean. The islands have no native population other than some scientists and engineers from France, which claims them as a territory.

Roughly 45 researchers inhabit the island in winter, peaking at 110 in the summer.

Pitcairn Island is a tiny speck of land located nearly dead in the center of the southern Pacific Ocean. It has a population of some fifty people. The nearest land to them is Tahiti which is several hundred miles away.

Located in Canada Alert is a small village that lies on the Arctic Ocean only 500 miles below the North Pole. It is widely considered to be the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world. The nearest town to Alert is a small fishing village roughly 1,300 miles away.

Considered at one point the last county in Tibet without a road leading to it, Motuo is a small community in the Tibetan Autonomous Region that remains one of the few places in Asia still untouched by the modern world. With a population of around 11,100 it recently had a road built to it and experienced a surge in tourism.

Now picture a huge valley cut from the earth. In the center of the valley a pristine, bluish green river flows roughly through. Now place the coolest golf course you’ve ever seen etched into the landscape. You are at the Himalayan Golf Club in Pokhara, Nepal.

This 9 hole course may be just 3,360 yards but due to the unique layout and unusual terrain it will take hours to complete.

The Legend Golf Resort, surely one of the most beautiful and longest courses in all of Africa. Measuring in at just shy of 8,500 yards this course has a surprise 19th hole that needs a helicopter ride to reach!

This hole is situated nearly half a kilometer above the green, near the tip of Hang Slip Mountain. Tee off is 470 yards above the hole and the green is in the shape of the continent on which it is based.

While it costs an extra £200 to play this hole, the pictures alone are worth the price!

In Green Zone Golf Club 9 holes are in Finland, the other 9 in Sweden and you have the ability to play a round of golf in two countries at 2am whilst the sun is still shining. If that isn’t a unique golfing experience, I don’t know what is.

Coober Pedy, Southern Australia is without a single blade of grass. Due to the aforementioned heat, the majority of the golfing takes place at night using glowing balls.

The 18 hole course only stretches 1,365 km along the coast of South Australia. Officially it is the world’s longest golf course with an average distance between holes of about 66 km.

It takes a few days to get through this mammoth golf course, but you get travel a lot of the Australian coast while migrating from hole to hole. The longest distance between two holes is a staggering 200km!

The course’s designer, Desmond Muirhead, was asked to design 18 unique holes back in the late 1980s and whilst all were certainly interesting, none confused as many people as the 7^th hole.

This hole is a challenge unlike any other, as the green is boat shaped with a maximum width of 60 feet and length of 125 feet. If that's not difficult enough for you, there are two large water-born traps on either side framed in pincher-like teeth to emulate the crushing clashing rocks.

Unfortunately the hole has since been redesigned but we've left it in as it's such a unique design we felt it needed inclusion.

It is home to the World Ice Golf Championship and offers stunning views of icebergs and formations. It’s a lot like normal golf; except the greens are called whites and the golf balls are red. The course changes every year based on the position of the fjords and icebergs.

The nine-hole course was built and is maintained by prisoners, who aren’t allowed to play on it. It was designed by the prison dentist and appears to be much like any other golf course. 

Anyone wanting to play must apply 48 hours in advance so they can be screened, and play may be suspended at any time “due to institutional need or at the Warden’s discretion.”

The New Century Global Center in China opened in early 2013 and boasts the worlds largest amount of floor space at a total of 1,760,000 m2.

Of the 1.76 million square metres of space, 400,000 m2 is dedicated to shopping, while the rest hosts a university complex, hotels, cinemas, swimming centres, patio heaters, houses, office and so much more!

Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 is the single largest building in the world by floor space. The building contains 97 escalators, 157 lifts, 180 check-in counters, 2,600 car-parking spaces and has a floor area of 1,713,000 m².

The entire airport services roughly 90 million passengers a year (2018 figures) and is the 3rd largest airport by passenger volume in the world. Trailing only Atlanta International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport.

Finished in 2011, the Abraj al Bait is a collection of 7 towers with the tallest (The Makkah Royal Clock Tower) standing at a tremendous 601 metres tall!

These buildings are host to a varity of venues, including hotels, shops and a hospital just to name a few. In total the 7 buildings sprawl out over a total of 1,575,815 m2 making this the 3rd largest building in the whole world.

If shopping is your thing, then look no further than the absolutely massive CentralwOrld in Bangkok, Thailand. Spread over 1,024,000 m2 this building was originally opened in 1990 but the CentralwOrld section opened later in 2001.

Aaalsmeer Flower Auction is the second largest building in the world. Every day, nearly 20 million flowers from around the world are traded inside this humongous Dutch facility. It has a floor area of about 990,000 m².

The year 2008 saw Beijing Capital International Airport as the 8th busiest airport in the world. It is the second largest airport terminal in the world and has a floor area of 986,000 m².

As of 2019 Beijing Airport is now the 2nd busiest airport in the world, servicing 95 million passengers in 2018.

The Venetian is a 40-story, luxury hotel and casino resort in Macau, China. It is the largest single structure hotel building in Asia and it has a floor area of about 980,000 m² making this the 7th largest building on the planet.

Opened back in April 2012, the Sands Cotai Central (originally known as parcels five and six) covers a floor space of 890,000 m² and offers visitors a wide selection of places to gamble, drink and relax.

Technically 4 buildings, this super-block consists of 4 residential towers named The Via, The Vue, The Viola, and Sky Loft. It covers a total floor area of 750,000 m² and was opened in July 2011.

Berjaya Times Square is a mega-scale multi-purpose complex which contains a shopping center, two five star hotels, indoor theme park, residences and offices. It has floor area of 700,000 m².

With numerous skyscrapers and mountains located to the north and its only runway jutting out into Victoria Harbour, landings at the airport were infamously difficult.

Unfortunately, Kai Tak airport closed in July 1998, but its legend lives on.

The airport is infamous for its short runway which, surrounded by high mountains and the ocean, which make it a tricky landing for even the most experienced of pilots.

Ranked as the 3rd most dangerous airport in the world by "Most Extreme Airports" on The History Channel.

The arrival descent is extremely steep over the hilltop traffic circle and departing planes fly right over the heads of sunbathers (although small signs advise sunbathers not to lie directly at the end of the runway

Courchevel’s airport has a certain degree of infamy in the aviation industry as home to one of the shortest runways in the world. The airport has a dangerous approach through deep valleys which can only be performed by specially certified pilots and the runway is a paltry 537 metres long!

The airport is famous for having a runway that connects almost directly to the beach. Although the runway itself is 2,300m long, incoming jets have no margin of error when landing at this airport.

Approaching airplanes must follow a 3° glide slope, flying low over the famous Maho Beach. Plane spotters and tourists alike are drawn to this runway, but please take care if you are fortunate enough to visit this destination, as there was a fatality in 2017 caused by injuries from a jet that was taking off and tourists are frequently criticized for dangerous behaviour on the beach!

Due to the short runway at Gilgit airport that is located at the edge of a slope, even an aircraft as small as a Boeing 737 aircraft cannot land and take-off at the Gilgit Airport.

It is considered one of the dangerous and deadliest airports in the world because of its location and the difficulties during landing. It is a step by step decent landing and the pilot has to continuously monitor the altitude as well as should be physically able to see the mountains.

Although it has recently been given the go-ahead to extend the runway!

Narsarsuaq Airport is located in Narsarsuaq, in southern Greenland. The lake at the end of the runway and steep cliffs makes it difficult to land even for skilled pilots.

The locals claim that this is the shortest commercial airport runway in the world. There are not any overrun areas on either end of the paved runway where sheer cliffs immediately drop off over 200 feet into the sea.

Lugano-Agno’s instrument approach procedure is quite challenging because of its steep angle of descent of 6.65° which is double of the standard approach. This is due to its geographic location in the mouth of a valley.

Akashi-Kaikyō is the largest suspension bridge to date and is located in Japan. It was opened in 1998 and serves a main span of 1991 meters. Just shy of 2 kilometers!

Opened in 2009 the Xihoumen Bridge boasts a span 1650 metres and serves the Zhoushan (Zhejian) area of China.

This bridges beats out our next one by a mere 26 metres!

Also opened in 1998 - The Great Belt Bridge serves the delightful people of Denmark and connects the locales of Zealand and Funen. Servicing both railway and road. It is also known as the Storebælt Bridge.

The Great Belt section of bridge stretches over 1624 metres but is part of a longer "Great Belt" stretch, boasting a total of 6790 metres!

The Turkish Osman Gazi Bridge opened just 3 years ago in 2016. The longest span covers 1550 metres and connects the regions of Dilovasi and Altinova over the Gulf of Izmit.

Opened for business in 2012, this South Korean bridge is just 5 metres shy of the Osman Gazi at 1545 metres and services the space between Gwangyang and Yeosu in the South Jeolla Province.
