These fairy lolly stick puppets are the sweetest and simplest craft to make. They came about during an after school crafting session with my daughter. We experimented making fairies with lolly sticks and discovered they make really lovely puppets!

You can make these fairy lolly stick puppets with just a few things from your art and craft supplies. Feel free to improvise with whatever materials you have to hand – it’s part of the fun!

First of all you’ll need to gather your materials. If you don’t have any sequins you can cut up bits of old gift wrap into shapes instead.

Fairy Lolly Stick Puppets

You’ll need:

Coloured/shiny card – for the wings

Recycled/plain card – either pink/brown card, or just a piece of cereal box

Lolly stick – any size or colour

Sequins – or any shiny bits you can find!

Scissors

Glue stick

Pen/pencil

Piece of pipe cleaner – any colour

How to Make a Fairy Lolly Stick Puppet

1. Draw a circle for the fairy’s head. To make a perfect circle try tracing around the bottom of a small cup, or an empty toilet roll tube.

2. Draw a wing shape on your coloured or shiny card. This can be small or large – make sure it will fit on your lolly stick!

3. Cut out the shapes. Position the wings onto the back of your lolly stick, add glue and stick. Then position and stick the head onto the front of the lolly stick.

4. Draw a face with a pen or pencil.

5. Add sequins to decorate the fairy’s wings. Use a small piece of pipe cleaner to create hair. Add a sequin for a hair decoration.

Tip: Place your sequins where you would like them first. When you are happy, stick them with a small amount of glue.

These easy washi tape hearts are so quick and easy to make – ideal for younger crafters. These washi tape hearts are perfect to create little valentine notes, or as thank you cards.

The effect of the torn washi tape looks really cool! Children of all ages will enjoy experimenting with different colours and patterns. See what different effects you can create with the washi tapes!

You only need a few things to make these washi tape hearts, they really are so simple!

Easy Washi Tape Hearts

You’ll need:

Card – you can use recycled card such as an old cereal box if you like

Washi Tape – assorted colours and patterns

Black Pen – to draw a face

Goggly eyes – optional

Draw a heart on your piece of card, large or small, any size you like. Cut out. This is a great opportunity for little ones to practice their fine motor skills.

Leave out a selection of washi tapes and show children how to tear a piece off and create a collage. Let children get creative and add any combination of colours and patterns they like!

If you would like to you can add a face with a black pen or some goggly eyes!

Who loves a good ‘ole recycled toilet roll craft? I think the best Christmas decorations are the homemade ones, how about you?

Toilet roll crafts are one of our faves as you don’t need much to make them – it also reuses those cardboard tubes.

These Santa Claus and Mrs Claus toilet roll ornaments are really easy to make with just a few materials. Inspire children to make their own Santa or Mrs Claus – or perhaps they might decide to make their own Christmas characters!

You’ll only need a few materials to make these Santa Claus and Mrs Claus ornaments.

You’ll need:

Cut a piece of skin coloured paper to fit around the toilet roll. It should cover approximately half of the toilet roll. Stick carefully.

Cut a piece of red felt to fit around the toilet roll as a coat. Stick carefully.

Cut the white felt or cotton pad into a hair shape and stick. Repeat to make a beard if making Santa.

Cut some black card into two small circles. Stick on to make buttons.

Cut some red felt into a hat shape. Add a band of white felt or cotton pad, plus a white circle on the top of the hat. Stick on top of the hair.

Add eyes and a mouth with a black pen. If making Mrs Claus you could add some holly using green card and red sequins, or card.

To finish, cut a strip of felt and stick inside the top of the toilet roll – to make a loop for hanging the ornament.

Repeat if you would like to make both characters! Or encourage children to make some of their own ideas, using the materials available. They could make some of the elves from Santa’s workshop or any other characters they can think of!

You can hang these ornaments on the tree or anywhere else in the house. We discovered a mug tree makes a good place to hang ornaments in the kitchen!

Do your children like to make toilet roll crafts? What characters do your children like to make?

Remember to pin this post for later!

Are you looking for a simple and fun craft that your kids can make by themselves? These wooden spoon people puppets are a creative activity that children will love. They can use their imagination to create any different characters that they like!

My children enjoyed making all sorts of wooden spoon people; mermaids, ladies with pretty dresses, even super heroes.

You’ll only need a few things to get your children started on these wooden spoon people puppets.

We used this art and craft kit which contains wooden spoons (and forks), pens, sequins, buttons, goggly eyes, pipe cleaners, feathers, felt and sparkly card. Having all of the bits and pieces together in a kit made this a really simple activity to set up. But of course you can also buy or collect all of the components separately. You may have some of the materials already in your craft cupboard at home!

You’ll need:

Wooden spoons

Glue

Plus any of the following:

Goggly eyes

Sequins/buttons/feathers

Pipe cleaners

Felt

Coloured paper/card

Or remember you can buy an art and craft kit with everything you need.

How to make wooden spoon people puppets:

You can simply put out all of the materials. Encourage children to use their imagination to create their people by sticking features onto their spoons. To stick hair on, or any intricate details, you can use a glue gun or super glue (only with a grown up to help!)

Here are some ideas as inspiration:

To make a mermaid:

Cut out a sparkly tail and stick on your spoon. Add goggly eyes, a mouth, a sparkly pipe cleaner for hair, plus sequins for a bikini.

To make ladies with pretty dresses:

Cut a dress shape out of felt. Add sequins, or any bits of sparkle. Stick goggly eyes, hair and draw a mouth.

Do you have a Peter Rabbit fan in your house? My daughter adores the Peter Rabbit books and the tv show. How about your children? We love making our own toys from recycled bits and bobs in the house, so decided to have a go at making a Peter Rabbit craft using a toilet roll!

This Peter Rabbit Toilet Roll Craft is really simple to make. We’ve all got empty toilet rolls, recycled paper and bits and pieces we can use to craft with. You can rustle together the materials for this quite easily. As always use this post as inspiration and feel free to tweak the idea to suit you. I’m sure your children will also have lots of their own ideas to add. If you like you can try making one of the other Peter Rabbit characters too. My favourite when I was a kid was Benjamin – how about you?!

To start with you’ll need to gather your supplies. I like to make this into a ‘treasure hunt’ to get the kids on board – but I know this doesn’t always go to plan (!) so if not then gather the supplies yourself!

Cut a face with ears from a piece of card. Cover with brown paper, stick and cut around.

Who doesn’t love receiving a homemade card? Homemade cards are like being sent a hug in the post!

Children will love making these dancing heart stencil cards to send to family and friends.

We all love being given something that has been made for us and it’s just as special being the ones to create and send a card.

Heart Stencil Cards for Kids

You only need a few simple materials to make these heart cards and kids can personalise them to their hearts content.

You’ll need:

•Card for the stencil – an old cereal box will do, or you can print the template onto thin card

•White card – for the actual card!

•Red and white paint

•Small sponge

•Black pen

•Googly eyes

•Washi tape or removable tape (useful but not essential)

How to make:

1. First, draw a heart onto a piece of cereal box.

2. Cut the inside of the heart to create your stencil.

3. Fold your piece of white card in half and place the stencil over the top. You can gently tape it in place with washi tape or removable tape if you wish.

4. Sponge red and white paint over the stencil. You can show children how sponging red and white together creates pink.

We were recently lucky to be invited to Roarr Dinosaur Adventure in Norfolk.

Both my children are huge dinosaur fans and were beside themselves with excitement to explore a whole world of dinosaurs!

Do you have a dinosaur lover in your family? If you are visiting Norfolk anytime soon, Roarr Dinosaur Adventure is a must visit for young paleontologists. Let’s face it, that’s most young kids!

Disclosure: We were gifted tickets in exchange for an honest review.

We’re all a little cautious about visiting places in these strange ‘new normal’ times. But a visit to Roarr Dinosaur Adventure was brilliant outdoor fun. It was easy to social distance, with plenty of hygiene procedures in place.

Here’s what we got up to and what we thought…

Roarr Dinosaur Adventure Review

We started in the central area of the park, which had tree houses and playground areas to explore. My son especially loved going inside the dinosaur’s mouth!

We also headed to the Splash Zone to bag a spot for later in the day. With the new social guidance, time slots have to be booked in advance. Do this as soon as you get there, to ensure you can get the time slot you would like.

There were ample picnic areas to sit and have a snack, away from others. We also caught a bit of the ‘Dippy Live’ show, before the kids were itching to explore.

After a picnic, we set off on the Dinosaur Trail. The trail wound this way and that through magical woodland and the children loved spotting dinosaurs amongst the trees. I liked the ‘fact finding missions’ dotted through the trail – they kept the children excited to explore.

At the end of the nature trail we discovered a new part of the park – with a secret animal garden, cafe and high ropes course. If you have older children the high ropes course would be a real hit. The children opted for the secret animal garden, where we discovered goats, guinea pigs and a turtle!

Next we set off through the Neanderthal Walk, towards the Jurassic Putt. One of my son’s favourite hobbies is putting (I know!) so this was a must do! The kids loved putting round the holes, though dinosaurs and volcanoes. The spots on the ground made it easy to know where to wait and ensure social distancing, which I thought was a great idea.

After our putting, we treated ourselves to an ice cream. The kids loved lining up on the dinosaur footprints by the cafe, so it was easy to stay apart and the cafe was take away, so it all felt very safe.

Finally it was time to head to the Splash Zone! With slides, fountains, cannon shoots and a giant bucket, the kids had an absolute blast. This was an after the splash zone shot! I think it’s safe to say this was the highlight!

Social distancing

All around the park it was easy to keep a distance from others and the markings around areas such as the cafe, made it easy for children to maintain 2 metres. There was plenty of hand sanitiser around the park, such as at the Jurassic Putt and the toilets were clean and quiet. Whilst in the shop we wore masks around a one way system, whilst payments were through a plastic screen.

In summary

In a world where we are all trying to explore outdoors more, Roarr Dinoasaur Adventure fits right in. We were gifted tickets for this review – but would happily pay next time. It was reasonably priced and an awesome day out – the kids are already asking when we can go back!

Children are the masters of their own creativity. Given the time and space, children will think of ideas for play or creative projects that will never fail to surprise you!

Sometimes though, children do need a little reminder of how creative they can be. We all have those moments when children are “bored” or at a loose end – sometimes my children are like this on rainy days! A little inspiration can go a long way.

Here I have 40 simple ideas to inspire children’s creativity.

I’ve included a printable version of these ideas. You could print and cut up the ideas and put them in a jar or a box – ready to pull out an idea when it’s needed. You can set up many of these activities for children to do independently. Some of them may require your support, or you might just want to join in!

Here are all 40 simple ideas to inspire children’s creativity!

1. Dig for dinosaurs in the sand.

Hide some plastic dinosaurs in an outdoor sand box, or in kinetic sand. Give children some tools to dig and find the dinosaurs!

2. Make a den.

Such a timeless activity for kids. Make an indoor fort with sheets over a table and fill with pillows. Or build an outdoor den with sticks!

3. Paint Outside.

Painting outside is fun when the weather is warmer – plus if you’re worried about mess it’s much simpler.

4. Make a treasure map (and hide some treasure).

If you can spare a few minutes the night before, dip some sheets of paper into some cold tea and leave to dry – this gives the treasure map an authentic look!
I love that cardboard boxes are something that we all have lying around at one time or another, so are a simple resource to use to encourage creativity in our children. Try saving cardboard boxes of all sizes in your home or school – put them in a bag or box to keep them organised. You’ll have instant, free and environmentally friendly materials for both craft and play!

Most children given a cardboard box will come up with any number of ideas on what to do with it. Give children a selection of cardboard boxes, felt pens, craft paper, scissors and glue – and see what they can create!

However, if you are faced with the dreaded “I’m bored..” or are just looking for some ways to get started – here are fifteen simple ideas for cardboard box activities and crafts for kids to make.

I just LOVE that most of these ideas are open ended and children can take them in their own direction. PLUS many of them start out as an art or craft activity, but can then be used for imaginative play – hooray!

We love making homemade cards in our family. I especially love incorporating buttons, scraps of paper and all those bits and pieces we all have lying about!

This colorful and fun fish card makes use of scraps of colored card, newspaper, foil, buttons and sequins – collaged together into a wonderful fish. I’ve used a round cutter to create the scales – a genius invention, because it avoids too much cutting!

This craft is perfect for kids of 3 and up, as everything can be stuck down with a glue stick. Older or more able children can cut out the fish and can make more complex designs if they wish.

To start with you’ll need to gather your supplies:

You’ll need:

Colored card – choose any colors you think look good or that you happen to have. You’ll need a large piece for the actual card and can use up any smaller pieces to cut out the circles.

Newspaper

Aluminium foil

Buttons

Sequins

Circle cutter (or use scissors)

Scissors

Glue stick

Black pen

To make your recycled fish card:

Fold your piece of card in half.

Draw the shape of a fish onto the card, so that the top of the body and of the tail touches the top of the fold.

Cut out the fish carefully, ensuring the parts that touch the fold remain attached.

Use the circle cutter to cut out circles of colored card, newspaper and foil, or you can use scraps of paper, tissue paper, or even thin fabric.

Stick the circles of card, paper, foil, newspaper and anything else onto the fish. Overlap the circles to create the effect of scales. You can collage the whole of the fish, or just part of the fish. If you wish to collage the whole fish, then stick circles right over the edge of the fish – you can trim these off later.

When you have finished sticking, trim the edges of the fish if necessary.

Add sequins and buttons to add a bit of extra shimmer!

Finish by cutting and sticking a white circle for an eye. Use a black pen to draw the pupil of the eye and to add a mouth.

Your little fishy is all ready to write inside and send to a friend!

These little fish card crafts make perfect birthday, Mother’s Day or Valentine cards. They would also look wonderful in a picture frame as a keepsake to put on the wall!

What occasion would you make a recycled fish card for?
