As I finished up this post, I looked for the address. Instead, I stumbled upon awful, terrible, horrible news. Meeting House Antiques in Metamora, Indiana caught fire December 13, 2017, and burned to the ground.

No one was injured in the 2 AM(ish) fire. It was not insured.

I’m posting this article anyway. Little Indiana serves as a way to preserve what we once had and fondly remember. Do share your memories in the comments section below.

You may contribute to a GoFundMe page someone set up for Meeting House Antiques owner Dave Henninger.

We caught our first glimpse of Meeting House Antiques in Metamora, Indiana through the trees.

Unfortunately, we were on one side of the state-run canal–and the antique shop was located on the other.

Meeting House Antiques in Metamora, Indiana

I don’t remember where we were in our Metamora wanderings when we first caught a glimpse of Meeting House Antiques through the trees.

We could see the shop from across the main drag of the canal.

The bike with the banana seat was propped against the sign.

Interesting old items were placed around here and there.

It creates an appealing exterior you just can’t ignore, especially if you are a treasure hunter.

Our oldest, who is somehow twelve-years-old now, is obsessed with treasure hunting. In addition to museums and anything history-related, antique shops rank right up there among his favorite type of destination.

It’s the thrill of the hunt. He enjoys searching for the old toys, books, and other items he finds on a good day while browsing through Indiana antique shops.

The youngest is interested in much of the same items. He likes the old books, coins, fossils, and rocks. He’s also fond of looking over musical instruments.

The big difference between the two of them is that the oldest takes much longer to make a decision.

This time, however, there was no delay.

“Can we go there now?”

Just looking at the place, you could tell it would be great. After seeing the building, we dashed over to the center of town.

The bridge to cross was not exactly close. But, as the sign for Meeting House Antiques read,

“It is worth the walk.”

Meeting House Antiques is in One Unusual Town

Now that’s a great exterior!

Metamora is unusual. Seriously, this is one unique Indiana town.

Like many small Indiana towns, the downtown is laid out in squares. Nothing new there. The main street is flanked by shops and snack shops or restaurants.

The majority of shops and places to grab a snack are downtown. Not entirely, though, so do branch out.

You will find one of our all-time favorite restaurants in the entire state, The Farmhouse, a few blocks off the downtown. Yes, you will read about it here on Little Indiana soon.

Anyway.

Something about Metamora makes the main street a bit different than what you are used to seeing.

Metamora, Indiana has a canal and train tracks that run right through the center of it.

This Metamora, Indiana image may not be the most thrilling, but here you can view how the railroad tracks, canal, and bridge are laid out. It’s unique, don’t you think?

The Whitewater Canal divides the downtown into two sections, accessible by bridges at each end. There is plenty of parking.

While this isn’t a large downtown, be prepared to do some walking. Kids, especially little kids, will be entertained with the ducks that live along the canal as you make your way along. Yes, you can feed them.

The Metamora Canal is a big draw here. To read more about the importance of canals (seriously, it is interesting), read about Bonneyville Mill.

Geodes! These Indiana geodes can be yours. Find them outside Meeting Hall Antiques in Metamora, Indiana

If you are interested in a trip down the canal, you will want to call ahead.

During both of our visits, the canal was not working due to repairs. Reach out to the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site at 765.647.6512.

For some reason, Metamora bills itself as “Indiana’s only functioning Canal Town.”

Delphi, Indiana, however, springs to mind. It is not a government-operated canal but it does have a canal boat.

While the downtown doesn’t center around the Delphi canal, there are some businesses nearby.

Perhaps someone local could shed a little light on that one? Delphi historian, Mark A. Smith, a knowledge-keeper of all history-related things, was also perplexed.

Who can resist poking through a box of vintage items? I can’t.

Maybe “Indiana’s Only Operational Downtown Canal” would otherwise be a better option.

The best time to visit Metamora, if you want to do a bit of shopping, is May through October during the weekend. That timeline will help ensure that the majority of shops and things will be open for business.

Our boys and I, however, have visited during the week twice.

After walking around for just a little while, the oldest proclaimed,

“I want to live here!”

He loved the Metamora vibe. They both did.

Like small towns everywhere, the shopkeepers and mail delivery person and the rest of the local population all seemed to know each other.

I did too. I kept dreaming up small business ideas just to be a part of it all.

The one kid we saw that day was chatty and fun. The shopkeepers consistently pointed out other businesses we needed to make sure to visit.

I like that.

The streets are so close there really isn’t much room for speeding, though I’m sure there are some who try.

Some say if you have seen one Indiana antique shop, you have seen them all. I’m not sure how those people have it so wrong, but perhaps a bit of a browse inside Meeting House Antiques would help cure them of their antiquing woes.

Meeting House Antiques is fun.

For starters, this antique shop is located inside what was once a church.

Meeting House Antiques is located inside what was the Metamora Christian Church for almost 100 years.

I am from Northwest Indiana. My Chicago-suburb parents relocated to DeMotte, Indiana when I was going into Kindergarten. I am not used to the age of buildings further south in Indiana.

The Metamora Christian Church built and occupied what is now Meeting House Antiques for almost 100 years.

Built in 1871, yet organized much earlier, back in 1841, the Metamora Christian Church worshipped here until 1970.

They moved to a different building in what they refer to as “Upper Metamora” in the sign above. I wish they had remained in this building until 1971 just to hit that 100 years mark.

Meeting House Antiques may not have the pews, but it still has the soaring ceiling and stained glass of the former church.

Meeting Hall Antiques has vintage and rare books. I love the way things are arranged.

It is the perfect place for an antique shop.

What will you find at this Indiana antique shop?

Plenty.

Like many antique shops, there are random items. That only adds to the fun of browsing.

As you can see above, there are excellent old books here. They do carry some rare titles, like the Bible you see below. They are amazing.

Take a second to admire them. Like the note reads on the image, it is neat to think about where these books have been. That 1733 Swedish Bible is so old–so where has it been hiding all these years?

We also had a very old family Swedish Bible but I am sad to think it may have been ruined a decade or so ago. My mother’s mother was a “Bergstrom.” I loved when my grandma and my aunts would speak Swedish over coffee.

Now I only wonder what they were saying that they didn’t want me to know!

You may not have visited Roann, Indiana yet and that would be sad because it means you have also never wandered through Stockdale Mill.

And that, my friends, is a cryin’ shame.

Roann, Indiana is a small town in Wabash County. As of the 2010 census, 479 people call Roann “home.”

In a town that size, you can bet that everyone knows everyone.

Pop inside downtown Roann and you can feel the bonds of community. It is something we still remember now, although this visit took place a couple years back.

The more history savvy among the town understand the importance of such a landmark.

While you can have a successful town without an anchor, just take a look at busy and bustling Kirklin, Indiana on the weekend, it helps.

For Roann, the addition of the working mill provides a nice mix of unique experiences. There are the antique shops, the photogenic Eel River bridge, Lynn’s Restaurant, and the mill.

History of the Stockdale Mill

Visit the Stockdale Mill in Roann and you may feel as though you have transported to an earlier time.

Just one mile west of Roann, on SR16, you will find Stockdale Mill. There isn’t much around it other than fields and trees and Eel River.

The water-powered mill, one of only a few left, is scenic and pretty, even on a gray Eeyore day like when we were there.

While we say that the Stockdale Mill is in Roann, it is actually located in what was once the town of Stockdale (1837) and called Vernon, even before that.

Back in the day, Stockdale, Indiana was the center of trade in the area.

According to the Stockdale Mill dedication of the historical marker by Norma P. (Deck) Krom, there was a post office that opened in 1853 and operated for thirty years. There were saloons, a church, hotels, a general store, and two doctors.

At one point, so says the dedication document,

Stockdale was reputed to be the toughest village in the state at one time. Curiously, no mention is made of a town jail.

The original 1839-built mill was lost. A new mill, in 1857 was constructed, and is the mill you see standing before you.

It was built to last.

Krom shared,

“Fifty foot beams were hand hewn by broadax from oak, walnut, and poplar, and one is of hickory elm…No nails were used; rather the timbers tightly fitted together by notches. “

Stockdale Dies, Roann Begins

Today, there is nothing left in Stockdale, other than the mill, for reasons largely due to the long-ago town inhabitants.

You see, back when the railroad was king, a section of track was going to head directly through Stockdale, says the Manchester History site. Most of the affected farmers freely donated their land. One would assume they were excited about the big picture: railroads = money.

Some farmers refused to hand over their land. Those farmers were hoping to cash in. They wanted the railroad to pay for the property.

But things didn’t go as planned.

Instead of the railroad buying up the land, the surveyors made an unexpected move. They planned a new route, this time through Roann, Indiana.

According to “History of Miami County, Indiana: A Narrative Account of Historical Progress, Its People and Its Principal Interests, Volume 1 by Arthur Lawrence Bodurtha,

“When the Eel River (Now the Vandalia Railroad) was built and the town of Roann grew up only a short distance away, the village of Stockdale ceased to grow and after only a few years began to decline.”

The Eel River Railroad, also known as the Butler Branch due to its span from Butler, Indiana up to Logansport, and opened in 1874.

Bodurtha wrote about the fast decline of Stockdale:

“A decade after the completion of the railroad, the grist mill and a few dwellings were all that remained of the once active, thriving village.”

Why is this railroad known by two different names?

Since it followed a portion of the Eel River, termed the “river of snake fish” or “river of the slippery fish” by the Miami Native Americans, so shared Jay A. Taylor in the essay The Eel River of Northern Indiana, it isn’t difficult to figure out how it was also referred to as the Eel River Railroad.

Check out the original everything inside the Stockdale Mill in Roann, Indiana.

While the railroad didn’t guarantee growth, just look at Van, Wynkoop, Vandale, and Pettsville, it didn’t hurt. In this case, for poor Stockdale, Indiana, it hurt real bad.

While Roann isn’t exactly a bustling metropolis, it is still a dot on the map, unlike Stockdale.

The railroad was abandoned almost a century later, in 1977. Several forward-thinking areas are turning the old tracks into paved walking/biking trails.

Stockdale Mill had a capacity of fifty barrels a day. Can you imagine? The mill operated commercially until 1964. It was restored in 2002. A new roof was added in 2017.

There is plenty more to learn about Stockdale Mill, but I will leave that to the volunteers. I don’t want to tell you everything. You have to see this one for yourself.

Visit Stockdale Mill

At the Stockdale Mill, you not only get to view the working grist mill in action, but you may be able to join in the fun. Just imagine, however, that only one person was required to run the mill back in the day. Sounds a bit lonely, don’t you think?

The best thing about Stockdale Mill was also the most unexpected.

Stockdale Mill is a privately-owned, non-profit property. You can get hands-on.

There are no glass cases walling in artifacts. There are no large barriers between you and the moving parts of the mill. It’s not exactly a finely-tuned machine. It’s big. It’s old. It’s loud.

And that’s exactly the way it should be.

There are three floors and a basement. All but the basement is original (concrete was used after the basement wood rotted away).

Volunteers donate time, energy, and skills. Your contributions are tax deductible.

If you live in the area, they need volunteers that fit a variety of roles:

“Volunteers are actively working on the building, dam & race, milling equipment, and property.”

“Also, volunteers conduct tours, relate history, do historical research, and develop promotional materials.”

Our tour was incredible. Our guide was full of interesting information about the old mill.

His passion for the mill was obvious. It was also infectious.

Our youngest son has two favorite mugs he uses for his hot tea obsession–and one of them is from the Stockdale Mill.

Yes, you can get kids interested in history. Most schools won’t cover history until a child hits the middle school years. That’s far too many years to wait.

Get started early.

Show the kids in your life the amazing past of our Indiana.

It’s hard to appreciate where we are until you can see where we have been.

During our many trips, our oldest is frequently asked about his favorite kind of places to visit. His response has always been, “the museums.”

While Stockdale Mill isn’t a museum, it is exactly the type of place he loves and the type of unique Indiana attraction that most kids will, unfortunately, never get a chance to visit.

Let’s change that, shall we?

Travel with kids isn’t always easy. Make it part of what you do and you will be surprised by how well it can go. And lay off the electronics. It’s a great time to bond.

A Recognized Historic Landmark since 2004

Stockdale Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

If you haven’t been through small towns before, it is likely you have never seen a grist mill, let alone a working grist mill like Stockdale Mill. It is a unique experience. Bring a couple of bucks with you so you can pick up a bag of their fresh-ground goods or other items.

As always, do call ahead. This is a seasonal attraction.

Welcome the family home with this incredible ground beef enchiladas recipe. With its meaty filling, savory sauce, and plenty of cheesy goodness, it’s a dinner recipe to remember.

If you have always wanted to be able to make a Mexican dish at home, but didn’t think you could handle it, start here with this Mexican recipe.

If you can measure and combine ingredients, stir a sauce, and fill a soft tortilla, you can handle this too.

When I share a recipe with you, I like to know the story behind the recipe. For example,

What’s the difference between a burrito and an enchilada?

Where did enchiladas come from?

How long have people been eating enchiladas?

Why isn’t an enchilada necessarily considered Mexican cuisine?

What’s the Difference Between Enchiladas and Burritos?

I love Mexican food but I don’t always know the difference between the items. Is there a difference between enchiladas and burritos? If so, what is it?

For starters, you won’t use your hands to eat an enchilada.

The main difference between enchiladas and burritos are all in the preparation.

General internet consensus appears to agree that it isn’t so much whether a corn or flour tortilla is used, or even whether it is stacked or rolled, but whether or not the tortilla was baked or fried and if a sauce was included during baking or added afterward.

Of course, there are some who possess strong opinions, and who believe an enchilada is made from corn tortillas, but for the most part, it’s more about how the dish is made than what it is made with.

If a tortilla has been filled, folded, sits in sauce, is topped with sauce, and then baked, it receives enchiladas status.

If a tortilla is filled, folded, baked, and served with something on top, it’s a burrito. If the red sauce is poured on after the burrito is baked (and likely topped with cheese), it’s a wet burrito.

If it has been filled, folded, and then fried, it’s a chimichanga. If the corn tortilla is filled and tightly wrapped, then fried, you have the makings of one of my favorite recipes: flautas. My favorite homemade recipe for flautas, however, is baked.

This recipe for homemade ground beef enchiladas is so amazing you won’t believe it. This is going on our favorite recipe rotation.

Interestingly enough, finding the answers to some of those questions from reputable websites has proven tricky. I had expected plenty of info out there regarding the history of the enchilada.

It took quite a bit of digging, but I did uncover some interesting facts regarding the enchilada, like its origin, its shift from Mexican cuisine to Tex-Mex cuisine, and the impact Diana Kennedy made on documenting Mexican food–and changing the status of the enchilada, and other foods of its ilk, forever.

That may be a bit dramatic, but let’s begin at the beginning. According to Dining Chicago, “the word enchilada derives from Spanish enchilar, “to season with chili.”

Enchiladas, it is believed, were first whipped up by the Mayans, stated Dining Chicago.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop shared,

“…Enchiladas originated in Mexico, specifically from the lake region of the Valley of Mexico. The indigenous people of this area began a tradition of wrapping fish in small corn tortillas while, we imagine, wishing for a Corona.”

You know the cumin and garlic found in enchiladas and many other Mexican foods? That’s actually a Moroccan influence from the 1500s.

Here’s an interesting tidbit from History.com:

“…when the Spanish brought workers of Moroccan descent from the Canary Islands to their settlements in the San Antonio region. As a result, Moroccan cooking, with its heavy use of cumin and garlic, became part of the complex and interesting history of Tex-Mex cuisine.”

The general consensus is that the first mention of enchiladas made its way into the first cookbook printed in Mexico, El Cocinero Mexicano, which translates to The Mexican Chef.

That was back in 1831.

During my research, I learned that Tex-Mex cooking is the proper term for everything that occurs north of the border.

Yes, Tex-Mex is the appropriate terms for what those of us in the United States has done to Mexican food.

That wasn’t always the case. Back in 1972, again from History.com, Diana Kennedy drew the line between what she counted as authentic Mexican cuisine and what became known as Tex-Mex cooking–those dishes that are created here in the US.

It happened with the release of Diana’s first cookbook, (affiliate link. I receive a small commission for sales) Cuisines of Mexico.

At the time, it was a big deal. Some chefs and cooks were offended at the division, especially since these foods, like nachos, originated in Mexico. But the term “Tex-Mex” spiraled into its own separate category of cuisine that we use today.

Who is Diana Kennedy and why did her opinion matter?

Diana Kennedy (3/3/1923) is frequently referred to as the “Julia Child of Mexican Cuisine” or the “Grande Dame of Mexican cooking.”

Paul and Diana headed to Mexico together that same year. She became deeply interested in the food, joining him on his trips around the country when she could, or having him write recipes down for her when she couldn’t.

Much like today, people weren’t writing down their family recipes. Diana felt the need to document these recipes and learn the techniques from the source.

I’m all about layering my enchiladas with anything and everything. Lettuce, olives (green and black), sour cream, red salsa, green salsa, and whatever else I can dig out of the pantry or find in the fridge.

Sadly, Paul passed away ten years into their marriage. They had only been in New York for a year.

Diana needed a job. The Times food editor, Craig Claiborne snagged her a position to teach classes on Mexican cooking in New York. Is that a perfect fit or what? An editor approached Diana and asked her to turn her classes into a book.

And that is when Diana wrote her first book, “The Cuisines of Mexico” in 1972, where, with a few typewriter strokes (her preferred method of writing books for many years), she changed the way people thought about Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine.

These books are more than simple cookbooks. They include techniques, commentary on the importance of the quality of ingredients, and the stories behind the recipes.

It’s part cookbook and part history.

At the time of this writing, Diana Kennedy is almost 95 years old, has more than ten cookbooks on Mexican food behind her, the last book a 2013 reissue of her popular My Mexico: A Culinary Odyssey with Recipes (The William and Bettye Nowlin Series in Art, History, and Culture of the Western Hemisphere) cookbook.

The Guardian reported,

“I never travel in straight lines,’ she says. ‘The important discoveries in my life have always happened by chance.”

One spontaneous trip to Haiti changed her life.

Prince Charles dined at her Michoacán home when he awarded her the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Let’s get on with your dinner discoveries. It’s time to make magic in the kitchen, Tex-Mex style, with this homemade enchiladas recipe from Taste of Home.

Homemade Enchiladas with Ground Beef

This isn’t authentic Mexican cuisine. This is Tex-Mex at its finest. If you prefer corn tortillas, go with it. If you want to play with the sauce, do it. Want firmer tortillas? Cook them for a little bit first or go with corn tortillas. Watching your salt? Buy low sodium canned items. Want more kick? Add in a small can of green chilies. Want a thinner scratch-made enchilada sauce? Use less flour.

Your kitchen, your taste, your rules.

Ground beef, onions, and stewed tomatoes sizzle in the pan. After the addition of a few seasonings, this becomes the delicious filling for homemade enchiladas.

You don't need to fold up the ends of the enchiladas. In fact, you shouldn't, so that sauce can get in there a little bit too. I did, albeit not well, because I just wasn't thinking about it, but the ends should be left open.

In my opinion, the only way to eat an enchilada is to layer it.

I believe that’s the key to anything you order at a Mexican restaurant. You need the extra stuff. In our home, the extra stuff isn’t necessarily traditional, but that’s okay. I’m not exactly serving the Queen.

We set out sour cream, chopped black olives, sliced green olives, sliced green onion, salsa verde, red salsa or chopped tomatoes (depending on the season), and chopped lettuce.

There is no wrong answer.

I am quite positive, however, that Diana Kennedy would disagree.

I will pretend to adult until you show me something amazing–like the two-story climbing platform found at the James A. Henderson indoor playground inside The Commons in Columbus, Indiana. After that?

All bets are off.

My first question will be, “Are adults allowed?”

And then, like kids everywhere have asked since the installation of the KidsCommons play area since its dedication in 2013, “Can I go play?”

Erin Hawkins, from Visit Columbus, said “Yes!”

So, I did.

The Commons Free Indoor Playground in Columbus

It sits inside a spacious play area with separate floor-level age-appropriate fun for preschoolers and toddlers.

The Commons indoor playground is often confused with the children’s museum, KidsCommons, just down the street. These are two separate kid-friendly attractions, just so you know.

Here’s something you should know something about me. It’s really kind of important when you look at a structure like that.

I am afraid of heights.

Paralyzing.

Can’t move.

NOW.

Kind of fear of heights.

I recently had to be rescued from the second level of a kid’s obstacle course at a local attraction. I had a safety harness. I had both kids in front of me, the youngest of whom was climbing fast through the thing.

My husband was right behind me.

I made it over the rope climb to the first platform and then…I couldn’t move.

The floor was a long way down.

I had to have the high school kid working the attraction head over and take me back.

Yes, it was embarrassing.

However, I share that story with you because the Luckey Climber did not give me any problems. I did not freeze up or panic or need assistance from a kid.

Safe Indoor Play Area for Kids

I’m inside the belly of the beast, otherwise known as the James A. Henderson Playground at The Commons, a space that’s part fancy pants event hall and part kid play area. As you can see, the platforms aren’t flat.

The Luckey Climber at The Commons in Columbus is just FUN–even for those of us with a paralyzing fear of heights.

See those platforms? What you may not realize from below is that the panels aren’t flat.

The structure adds a different element of fun and play than you would expect from an indoor play area because you have to pay attention to how you move from one platform to the next.

The company behind the Luckey Climber, Luckey, LLC. maintains that play on this type of surface has:

“positive effects on child development such as problem-solving, spatial thinking, balance, social interaction, and cooperation.”

The Commons, often and wrongly referred to as KidCommons, is an indoor playground. One side of this building is an event hall while the other side is this: all ages free play.

It makes sense.

While you are up in there, as you are moving, thinking, watching your step, and playing tag with your brother (as you can see in the video below), you are working on your balance and your coordination, all while figuring out how to get from one spot to the next.

But is it safe?

Absolutely.

As the company behind the Luckey Climber states,

“Specifically, there are no falls greater than 18 inches and there are no “cascades,” meaning a child cannot slide down multiple climbing panels.”

As I mentioned earlier, the platforms aren’t placed how you may expect. In fact, you can’t stand up in the Luckey Climber.

There is a good reason for that too, according to the company website:

“If you can’t stand up, you can’t fall down.”

Now that is smart.

All Ages Fun at the Commons in Columbus

This style of play structure isn’t new. Luckey, LLC. has been in business since 1985.

Of course, there would be one in Columbus. With a small city so devoted to art and architecture, style, and community, it isn’t surprising.

The Luckey Climber is located in innovative spaces around the world.

And why not? Look at the creative use of color and form and space. It is a kid magnet. I love that it includes the Columbus logo, the “C” used even as bike racks on the city streets. Clever stuff.

Fortunately, even little ones not quite ready for the big time can still enjoy The Commons.

There are three age-appropriate play areas here.

• Toddler Area (ages 6 months -2 years)

• Preschool Area (ages 2 – 5 years)

• School Age Area (ages 5 – 12 years)

Instead, let them experience the surprise of seeing an amazing two-story playground through the window. It’s so worth it.

Before you head out the door, there are a few things you need to know.

The first? The indoor playground has set hours. You can view those hours below.

Also, keep your shoes on. Both you and your kids shouldn’t be barefoot or run around in socks.

There is no one here to keep an eye on your kids. It’s an unsupervised play area.

Your children will absolutely love it with every fiber of their little beings.

No food or drink is allowed here although there are a couple of places to eat behind you.

Opt instead for something a bit more memorable, like the locally-owned restaurant, Zaharakos for homemade ice cream or one of the other incredible family-owned restaurants or cafes in the area.

Probably not. Unless, of course, you have visited the Bookshelf of Batesville. This Indiana bookstore is amazing.

From the outside, the Bookshelf of Batesville, Indiana doesn’t look like the biggest Indiana bookstore you’ve ever seen. In fact, you might mistakingly believe it to be small. It might even seem that way when you first step through the front door and are greeted with bookshelves.

But then.

Once you start winding your way around the books, you realize that this Batesville bookstore is a whole new animal.

There is nothing else like it.

Oh, owner Chris Fairchild told me her bookstore wasn’t anything different from other independent bookstores. But I know otherwise.

When you visit, you’ll get it, too.

The Bookshelf of Batesville is a place you can get lost in. Literally.

Sometimes, people can’t find their way out again, and yell, “Help!” I admit that makes me almost laugh out loud whenever I think of it. How embarrassing!

But since I happen to lack a sense of direction and must have what Netflix’s “The Good Place” describes as “directional insanity,” it’s all too easy to see how that could happen to me.

The Bookshelf of Batesville is incredible.

The Power of a Good Book

There are new books here and old books there. There are books in shelves and books in boxes. There are even books with foxes.

I couldn’t resist.

This isn’t an Indiana bookstore dedicated to only a specific type of book. There are children’s books and young adult books and adult books. You will find your mysteries, romance novels, and all the popular authors in every other genre you can think of.

As a kid, my mother made sure that we read picture books and magazines, like Humpty Dumpty, together each night. She grabbed books at the library or wherever she was that she thought I might like.

Later, trips to the mall were the best because it meant new books by my favorite authors. Back then, Christopher Pike, L.J. Smith, L.M. Montgomery, Cynthia Voigt, Stephen King, and Garfield were my favorites to read when I was a teen.

I still have the majority of the books I had as a kid, teen, and young adult.

There is nothing like a good book.

When I was first dating the man who would become my husband, things were going great, until he made a comment about how he wasn’t really into reading.

Shut the front door.

That can’t be!

I figured he had never been handed a great book. He wasn’t from a family of readers like I was. So, I shoved my copy of “The Bachman Books” (when Stephen King wrote as Richard Bachman) into his hands while advising him to try “The Long Walk.”

That story changed his life.

Not in an “Oh, great, now I’m prepared in case society takes a different turn,” but more of a “who knew books could be like this?” sort of reaction.

And that was the start of something good, as they say.

This year, as part of my husband’s New Year’s resolution to read more books, he is FINALLY letting me choose books for him. He flew through my vintage copy of Sir Author Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World,” and is moving onto “Jurassic Park” by Michael Crichton.

After that, I’m handing him a great book on philosophy, “Sophie’s World,” and then either “Travels with Charley” by John Steinbeck or “The Good Earth” by Pearl S. Buck. They are some of my favorite books of all-time.

But then, I recently finished “Gold Diggers” by Charlotte Gray. It’s a book about the Yukon gold rush and absolutely amazing. It may be up there on his list, too.

He’s got a great year of books ahead of him.

You can bet I’ve passed my love of books to our boys. While packing for Little Indiana trips, getting ready for doctor’s appointments, time stuck in the car between destinations, before heading to school, or running errands, our boys remind each other, “You always need to bring a book.”

It’s what I say to them and what my mom always said to me.

They are 99% percentile type of readers, devouring books grades ahead of where they are. While it makes a mama proud, it also makes it tricky. For example, how do you keep a twelve-year-old, who reads at a college level, engaged in books without a lot of things in them I’d rather he not have access to just yet? Or, how do you find books that aren’t too complex for his age and maturity level or too dumbed down?

You can talk to your friends, you can remember the stuff you read, or you can make use of a valuable resource found inside the Bookshelf of Batesville.

When you can’t find what you want or you don’t even know what you need, you should start with the “Bookshelf ladies.”

The Bookshelf ladies are the staff of the Bookshelf of Batesville. These women received the nickname for being “book mind readers.” They know what book you should read and they know where it is going to be located in the store.

This Indiana bookstore has an incredible number of titles.

I decided it was time to speak with Chris Fairchild about her giant bookstore.

It began with picture books thirty-eight years ago. At the time, you couldn’t find children’s books anywhere. Fairchild remembers the ready availability of paperback books at drugstores…but not any high-quality books for kids.

That was the main focus of hers then and it still holds true today.

What kind of books do you carry at the Bookshelf of Batesville?

“I think we figured we have about 225,000 used books. Easy.”

She continued, “We try to have everything. About the only thing we know we don’t have is porn, but…especially now, even your best sellers are borderline so there really isn’t anything that we don’t mess with.”

“We have lots of romance. Bestsellers, mystery, suspense. We do carry Christian books and business books. We try to have some of anything and everything available.”

What are examples of books you carry people may not expect?

“If you are looking for a book on pets, cookbooks, travel books…lots of young adult books now since that genre has just exploded. There are lots of people who read YA…We even have Fire and Fury. We just carry everything.”

There are more specialized areas, such as for homeschool families.

Perhaps Fairchild says it best when she says,

“We have just all kinds of stuff.”

That they do.

Don’t get me wrong, books are the focus of the Bookshelf in Batesville, but there’s a couple of other items of interest there too (and some fun things possibly in the works).

“Never judge a book by its movie.” Button from Bookshelf of Batesville, Indiana

Need a new bookmark? Of course, you do.

Chris shares, “The bookmarks are unique–not something you are going to get at Walmart. The buttons, we have those. Sometimes you find those when you are in a gift shop in a tourist area, you might find some of those things there.

Fairchild is looking into stocking greeting cards from a couple whose work just fits. But, space is at a premium inside the Bookshelf.

“If I can find just a corner of the store to put them in, we would like to start getting those cards simply because I need them! I still send cards!”

Fairchild jokes,

“We are landlocked. We can’t get any more.”

Now, the big question that I know is on all of your minds: does she carry the Little Indiana book?

Little Indiana Small Town Destinations Book Available

“I think so. I think it’s here. I get a lot of stuff from IU. We do [get] a lot of stuff from IU press and the Indiana historical society.

What’s unique about the Bookshelf, other than the sheer selection, is this: there are self-published works available here too. The authors bring in their books and the Bookshelf makes them available to all of you.

As Fairchild says, “I do have a lot of self-published local writers. Sometimes very good, sometimes horrendously bad, but we will carry them for them.”

It makes sense. After all, what I enjoy may not be your thing, right? You could discover the next big thing before it is the next big thing.

The Bookshelf is going to carry a book that is a compilation of the blog articles a young pastor’s wife wrote while she was dying of ovarian cancer. He paired it with text from the Bible and, as Fairchild says, “It is just lovely. He really deserves to get a publisher. This one is good. I think Zondervan would easily be interested.”

Do you hear that, Zondervan? She’s read more than a few books. She knows what she is talking about. You read it here first, folks.

When the shelving is taller than you are, you know you are in a great bookstore.

You would think that with a bookstore such as this, it would go to your head.

Fairchild maintains a sense of humbleness about the whole thing.

“I’m not really unique from any other independent bookstore. A lot of them are going to new and used [stock] because they have to–you almost can’t survive with just one or the other.”

“So there are a lot of other great independents in the Great Lakes area. Illinois, Michigan Indiana, and Ohio…lots of really cool bookstores.” I think we are pretty cool too. I think we are bigger…as far as used books go.”

I would have to agree.

How do so many books fit into her building? After all, she has “as many titles as much larger bookstores.”

But.

“They are not face out, they are spine out. They always say to be sure to put your books face out.”

Fairchild laughs, “That’s not happening here. “

But that’s fine. Dedicated book lovers won’t mind browsing while the rest of the bunch can ask the Bookshelf ladies for assistance.

How many books are we talking? Oh, only more than 225,000 used books. Add in new titles and this could take you awhile.

“Each one of my employees has their own area of expertise. One gal knows everything about mysteries. She knows the cottage mysteries, the suspense, she knows all that stuff.”

“Another [employee] is great in romance. If you ask, “I want a book, something like Nora Roberts, but I read all of Nora Roberts, who can you recommend?” She can rattle off a long list of them.”

While being a reader is important, the secret to a successful bookstore is having excellent employees.

“You have to have great help. Just because you like to read doesn’t mean you can work in a bookstore. You have to have a little bit of common sense and be up on pop culture. You have to be a little versed with what’s going on in the world to be able to help them find the right book.”

What would you like people to know about the Bookshelf of Batesville?

“We would love to see them. It’s tough. This climate is tough for bookstores. Amazon is a big problem. We are getting a lot of people back in that are tired of their devices, want to be able to hold a book, want to read it.”

Fairchild urged, “If they want to come in and browse, we have so many books here, and we try to keep all the newest things. If they have seen it in the New York Times or USA Today, we make every effort to have it on hand at least for a while. If they come in and say the last book I read was whatever and I loved it and want something like it, we can help them we can find them something they can enjoy.”

As always, make sure to call ahead before making a special trip. The Bookshelf of Batesville recently changed hours, and are closed on Sunday and Monday.

Go, you should.

Our home is stuffed to the gills with books. But there’s always room for one more.

Oasis Diner Fast Facts:

Oasis Diner was built in 1954 in New Jersey and carried by rail to Plainfield.

The diner was on the Indiana Landmarks Top 10 Most Endangered List in 2009 before relocation and renovation and reopening in 2014.

This Plainfield diner is one of not even five diners still in operation along US 40.

It is the only diner still operating in Indiana along US 40.

Baked goods are made onsite and they carry locally-made, handcrafted pop.

In the 1940s and 1950s, roadside diners were all the rage. It brings back the time when people headed on the open road for vacation, when people were interested in new things to see and do, and hadn’t yet settled into their sofas to binge-watch the latest Netflix find.

It’s when the next adventure was just outside.

That hasn’t changed. Adventure still waits, but in this new era of convenience and chains, far fewer venture forth.

Oasis Diner in Plainfield, Indiana could help change your mind.

A 1950s Indiana Diner

Atlantic City Stuffed French Toast is a breakfast item for big appetites. That is thick-sliced brioche toast that has been stuffed with cinnamon cream cheese and strawberries, then drizzled with strawberry sauce and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Diners go back much further than you think. In the 1870s (yes, the 1870s), one man hitched up his horse to a wagon, serving food and coffee to late shift workers. Others soon copied the idea after noting its success.

As time passed, the look of a diner changed. It was no longer horse-pulled carts or streetcars, but buildings. Gleaming, bright buildings with neon-lit signs ushered in a new era of diners in the 1930s. Plainfield Diner opened its doors back in 1954.

Made in Signac, New Jersey by the Mountain View Diners, it had to be transported by train to our Hoosier state.

Plainfield Diner sat on the town’s Main Street, just as it should, for decades.

You would have seen it on the Historic National Road (you may also know it as US 40) at Ronald Reagan Parkway. Its long-time address was 9750 West Washington Street.

It was a part of nerve-wracking first dates and new friendships, family outings, and extended road trips.

But that changed in 2009.

Danger for the Oasis Diner in 2009

There is another area of seating on the other side. There are also vintage lunch boxes and license plates decorating the wall.

The Plainfield Health Department closed the restaurant in 2009 because of its deteriorating structure. It was no longer a safe place. The owners could choose to fix it or close.

Plainfield Diner, once the site of tv commercials and movie filmings, one of only five diners originally found on the historic road, closed permanently.

There it sat for a few years. The price of the land was worth more than the diner itself. If someone were going to buy it, changes were pretty good they would rip down the diner to make room for something else.

Fortunately, enough members of the community recognized what it had: a sense of history and nostalgia you just can’t replace.

Indiana Landmarks got involved. It listed the Plainfield Diner as one of its Top Ten Endangered Sites and spread the word about the state of the diner and its importance to the community.

Side note: Indiana Landmarks does the same thing today, just so you know. If you’ve ever wanted to get involved in historic preservation or want to own a piece of history, start there. They still maintain a list of the Top Ten Endangered Sites in Indiana.

But anyway, back to Plainfield Diner.

Oasis Diner Nostalgia

At Oasis Diner in Plainfield, they top it with two eggs, home fries, bacon, and cheese.

A study was conducted to see how the Oasis Diner could perform with a change of location. Doug Huff and his father-in-law, Don Rector decided to pursue ownership of the Oasis Diner. In November 2014, the Oasis Diner was finally relocated and saved from a potential tear-down after over two years of planning and research.

Inside and out, the diner is restored to its ultra-cool original 1950s style. The original limestone is still there, the stainless steel portion is all original, and there’s a redone area past that but don’t worry. It still mimics the original look.

Remember, Oasis Diner is one of not even five historic diners still open on US 40 from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois. Let that sink in a moment.

Dine at Oasis Diner

Pink and green in 1950s style, Oasis Diner has heaps of atmosphere. The on-site bakery prepares those countertop delights.

People expected a few things from a roadside diner then: hot coffee, large portions, and homemade pie.

At Oasis Diner, you will find all of the above.

As you can see reflected in the images on this page, you will receive hefty meals that stick to your ribs.

I’ve been through the Oasis Diner in Plainfield, Indiana twice. I like a big breakfast and Oasis Diner provides just that.

If you are part of a group, be prepared to laugh. Some of the breakfast items are almost comically large. The kitchen will start bringing out platefuls of food, so much so that your table will seem tiny.

The kitchen is downstairs. That’s where the magic happens as homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, and other diner favorites are pumped out daily.

What kind of desserts?

You can call ahead and provide twenty-four hours notification by placing your special order for items that include (at the time of this writing):

Pumpkin Pie

Sweet Potato Pie

There is always a pie of the day but if you want a particular flavor to bring home, do call ahead twenty-four hours in advance.

Soda fans will be happy to learn about the handcrafted, locally-made sodas available at Oasis Diner. There isn’t any high fructose corn syrup in these creative concoctions–and the butterscotch root beer has a devoted following.

Speaking of devoted followings, the hand-breaded pork tenderloin is also a hit with locals (and beyond). While I have yet to eat anything other than breakfast at the Plainfield Diner, you know it is on my list. What’s on yours?

Sink back into the cushy booth, grab a seat at the counter, or take a place outside, and take in that great atmosphere.

If you have memories of this or other Hoosier diners, I’d love to hear it. Please, share your stories and preserve those memories in the comments section below.

Johnson County Selfie Stop Trail

Bargersville

Who doesn’t love a good deal? Starting at 5:00 AM on Sunday, the seasonal Bargersville Flea Market is a barter lovers paradise. Get a selfie with your best find of the day. Vendors usually pack up around 2 PM but they can leave when they want. It’s at the corner of SR135 & SR144.

Find the mannequin in the garden outside of Pam’s Parlor and Nail Salon downtown. It’s selfie time! Get creative here and don’t trample the flowers.

Get behind the white picket fence on the front porch of Pump House Antiques for a selfie to remember. This is a nice antique shop with plenty of parking.

Nora’s Knotty Pine boasts great food and reasonable prices. Come with an appetite. Not in the mood for food? It’s okay. Have a seat in the vintage chairs out front and smile for your selfie!

Thirsty? Make your way to Taxman Brewing Company. It’s a locally-owned brewery with a fantastic theme. Look for the large skull on the outside of the building. Get your selfie there.

Edinburgh

Snap a selfie from your canoe or kayak while floating along in the water at Camp Atterbury.

Italian prisoners of war asked for permission to build a chapel while interred at Camp Atterbury. Using found items, these Italian artisans skillfully crafted the Camp Atterbury POW Chapel in 1943. Marvel at the skill involved in that one then take your selfie.

It’s off the beaten path and so worth it. The Toner Historic District in Edinburgh lies past the downtown. Park your car, take a stroll and admire the mix of fabulous architecture of sixty+ houses that were built from 1845 to 1959. Get a selfie in front of the historic designation sign.

Find the Camp Atterbury Stone just after you enter from Highway 31. It was carved by Libero Puccini, an Italian POW held there. After the war, Puccino came back to the US and became a citizen. His son. Lt. Colonel Marcus Puccini, later serviced in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, it’s selfie time.

This is one location where you will need to use more than a little common sense. This is the grave in the middle of the road that, after an expansion of the road a few years ago, actually turned into “graves” in the middle of the road. More than just the grave of Nancy Kerlin Barnett (1793 – 1831), it also held the bones of seven others. Snap your pic with the memorial marker. Watch out for cars and be careful! If you would prefer, after your drive-by, you can get a pic with the original marker at the Johnson County Museum in Franklin.

Franklin

Show off the grand view of the Johnson County Courthouse at Ann’s Restaurant, Franklin’s oldest restaurant, as you can see above or get creative and put your own spin on it.

The exterior of the Artcraft Theater is something. Get your selfie with it or, for bonus points, see a movie, and take your selfie in front of the preserved mural framed inside.

Have a seat with Ben Franklin at Franklin College–or not. There is more than one statue of him. Choose your fave.

Every museum has interesting displays. The Johnson County Historical Society Museum has a “wall of heartthrobs.” Learn the story behind it and get your selfie here.

Toodleydoo Toys is a specialty toy store that always has games set out to sample in a table by the front. Grab a selfie with your favorite one. If you miss out altogether, then snap your selfie at the store window. It’s always well dressed.

The Vawter Memorial is situated on the grounds of the Johnson County Courthouse. The 1905 bronze sculpture was completed by Rudolf Schwarz. The fountain cost $5000 and was a gift of John T. Vawter. Rudolf Schwarz is known for eighteen different sculptures in outdoor public places that range from two Civil War reliefs outside the Indiana State House to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Vincennes and Indianapolis (and then some) to the Forrest Monument in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Grow your mind. Pop into Wild Geese Bookshop downtown. Not only does the shop look like something out of a Tom Hanks movie, but it is incredibly well-stocked with books and gifts alike. Take a pic with your favorite book or, for extra super double bonus points, snap one with a copy of “Little Indiana.” Get there after closing? Take one on the front stoop. It’s adorable.

Greenwood

Cool off and snap a pic at City Center Park, the location of Johnson County’s only splash pad.

Take a selfie with the fountain outside of Greenwood Park Mall and try to resist shopping until you drop.

Find your favorite sculpture on trails in Greenwood as part of Art on the Trail and share it with the rest of us.

The Greenwood Amphitheater is an outdoor music venue you’re going to love. Use it as your selfie backdrop.

A local favorite since 1962, Mrs. Curl Ice Cream Shop and Outdoor Cafe means summer. Sure, the name (and owners) have changed a few times over the years, but it’s still the place to go for treats. Get your pic by the umbrella-covered picnic tables. Don’t forget to tag your shot and tell all of us your favorite menu item.

Sure, you can golf eighteen holes or use the driving range, but you can also mini golf at Orchard Golf Center. If you do, grab a club and get your selfie.

If you love a good chai tea, Strange Brew is the coffee shop to visit. If you don’t, there’s plenty of other goodies available at Greenwood’s oldest (and locally involved) coffee shop. Check out those ice cubes. Fun! Snap your selfie in front of the aquarium. You can’t miss it. It’s enormous!

A popular date night or family outing destination, Otte Golf And Family Fun Center has mini golf, batting cages, driving range, and a golf course. Get a hole in one on the mini golf course? That’s where you should snap your pic! If not, get your selfie on over by the lighthouse.

Catch mad skillz at the skate park located within Northeast Park.

Hopewell

Check out the Hopewell Big Spring Memorial Marker and the stone building constructed there. It is an actual underground spring. The area can get pretty damp and muddy so watch your step. Head to the little building and snap a pic. A settler had big plans for the area back in 1824.

New Whiteland

Proctor Park features the Walk of Freedom, that honors the men and women who have served our country, as well as the Pathway of Honor to highlight the fire, police, and emergency responders. Stop a moment and take it all in. Then head to the playground equipment and snap your selfie.

An eighteen hole disc golf course, Grassy Creek Disc Golf Course, spans two parks, East Park and West Park. Frisbee lovers should snap a selfie at the hole they did their best! It’s free to play. Open from 6 AM – 10 PM each day.

Trafalgar

Park in the little gravel lot and then go for a walk. Relish the scenic views and natural wonders of 109 acres at the Laura Hale Preserve at Blossom Hollow. This time, snap your selfie at the picnic table located on the trail. Find access to the preserve just before the mailbox at 3637 Hougham Road.

Take your selfie while lost in the bamboo maze. It’s one of the free activities available at The Apple Works. There is no admission fee. The orchard began in 1989, boasts over sixty apple varieties (many uncommon kinds too), and is a favorite family seasonal destination.

Whiteland

The cows aren’t always in the milking parlor at Kelsay Farms but take your selfie here anyway. Bonus points if you can get a cow in it. It’s a family farm that began with a land grant by President Martin Van Buren in 1837. Six generations later, it’s a major seasonal Johnson County destination.

Rascal’s Fun Zone has a great photo op with a giant gorilla at the mini golf course. Don’t miss it!

Established in 1958, Whiteland Raceway Park is America’s oldest cart track. Going for a drive? You’ll definitely want to capture this one. Your choice.

Spencer County is a fun mix of gorgeous landscape and unusual attractions and the perfect next stop on the first ever Spencer County Selfie Stop Trail.

This isn’t the first one in the series. You can view the list of Indiana County Selfie Stops and learn more about how I came up with this original idea. It will be updated as more Indiana County Selfie Spot Trails are added.

Spencer County is more than Santa Claus. There is incredible history here and wonderful parks. It’s a great blend of now and then.

Are you sold on Spencer County now? Good. Let’s get to it!

Spencer County Selfie Stop Trail

Spencer County is a southern Indiana county that harbors a population of 20,952 people (2010 census). That almost fits my criteria for what I consider a small town (15,000 people or less). Incredible.

But this isn’t an area devoid of any fun. No way. It’s packed with excellent attractions and heaps of history to entertain any member of the family. As you make your way from one end of the county to the other you will enjoy one beautiful drive.

The towns and unincorporated communities included in the Spencer County Selfie Stop Trail include:

Gentryville

Grandview

Lincoln City

Mariah Hill

Rockport

Santa Claus

St. Meinrad

With a town of Santa Claus in there, the only town named Santa Claus still in existence, this could turn into a Little Indiana version of Pokemon–you gotta catch them all!

How To Join in the Selfie Stop Wayne County Trail

Before the days of selfies at the Santa Claus Museum in Santa Claus, Indiana. Taking pics of little kids is like herding cats.

All you need to do is to visit as many of these Hoosier locations as you can and take your selfie with the item described. A selfie is simply a pic you take yourself, of yourself that may include others.

Everyone would like to know what you think about a destination so tag it with “LittleINSelfie” and then include your comments and tips for everyone to make the most of a destination.

Then, share your selfie on the Little Indiana Facebook Page, share it on your own Instagram account, and/or also your Twitter account, accompany your entry with the hashtag #LittleINSelfie and tag Little Indiana on the appropriate social network.

For example, on Twitter, you would tag Little Indiana with @JessNunemaker, on Instagram @littleindiana, and on Facebook, you would use @littleindianatowns. See how simple that is?

Photos on Facebook will be gathered into a separate selfie album so everyone can join in your fun and view your suggestions.

10 Unique Spencer County Selfie Opps

For an area named for Santa Claus, you know that this list of unique Spencer County selfie stops is something to complete over the holiday season. Scroll down to see town specific selfie shootin’ fun that doesn’t have to wait for winter.

Watch the annual Rockport Christmas Program in Rockport and get your selfie while sitting in the awesome vintage seating. Located in the lower level of the courthouse, the auditorium space was once used as a meeting place for teachers in the 1920s. It has been relatively untouched since then.

Roast chestnuts outside at Santa’s Candy Castle. Snap your selfie by the fireside.

Traditional Christmas dinner at Santa’s Lodge? If you are joining in, get your selfie with Santa!

Drive through twelve miles of Christmas lights for the Santa Claus Land of Lights event. It’s the largest campground holiday show and it’s right here. Stop the car for two seconds and snap a quick in-your-car selfie.

At the Santa Claus Christmas Store, get your pic in front of your favorite ornament wall.

The annual pancake breakfast features Santa and the Mrs. in Rockport. Now that’s a selfie photo opp! Keep tabs on the location.

Are you participating in Breakfast with Santa at St. Nick’s Restaurant in Santa’s Lodge? Yup, time for another selfie with Santa.

At the Santa Claus Museum, there is an exhibit that features Santa Jim Yellig. Take your selfie with this Santa in the background.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…view Santa’s Great Big LED Tree of Lights at Kringle Place Shopping Center.

Take in more holiday lighting with the 24-foot iTrees outside of the Santa Claus Christmas Store each night. Get your selfie here!

Gentryville

Pop on over to the 1834 home of Abraham Lincoln’s merchant employer. The home is available for tour by appointment only. Get your pic in front of it and then go for a walk on the nature trail.

Grandview

Who doesn’t love a scenic photo opp? Share your selfie from the Lincoln Ferry Park, one of the stops along Highway 66. The Ohio Scenic River Byway, designated in 1996, is one of the of the original fourteen National Scenic Byways in the US. This is where young Abraham Lincoln handled his ferrying business. Get your pick by the historical marker.

Hatfield

Meet one of my all-time favorite Indiana bridges. Why? Well, it could be because it is unexpected, all out in the middle of nowhere, or that it is painted red, or that it is one of only five of this kind. It’s Boner Bridge (sometimes pronounced “Bonner” Bridge), otherwise known as Pyeatt’s Mill Bridge, and Warrick County Bridge No. 273. Be careful here.

Lincoln City

Head on over to Lincoln State Park. Make your way to the Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza, created in celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday. Read the inscriptions. Learn a little something. Take your selfie here among the stone.

The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial is a nice spot for a selfie. See the carved scenes of Abe’s life? Get your shot with an Indiana scene as your backdrop.

Mariah Hill

This is an old piece of public art. The crucifix at the Mariah Hill Cemetery was crafted in 1892 by A. Shum. Latin and German inscriptions are on the base. It is massive. Can you snap a selfie here and show off this Find it at the cemetery next door to Mary, Help of Christians Church.

Rockport

Ask anyone and they will tell you that Abraham Lincoln became the man he was because he spent his formative years in Spencer County. Head to the Lincoln Pioneer Village and Museum. Get a selfie with the Abraham Lincoln bust located inside one of the display cases.

What Hoosier hasn’t seen their fair share of apple orchards in Indiana but a peach orchard? Head to Lakeview Orchard and get a pic.

Heights and I don’t get along. But I braved the climb up to the upper cave at the Rockport Bluffs. Snap a selfie inside but watch out for the ledge.

Can’t handle the upper cave? Head down the line and look for the lower cave where a pioneer family spent a winter. A gash in the rock is more like it. Take your selfie in front of it. Bonus points if you did both.

Go in the Spencer County Courthouse and prepare to be amazed. Get creative and get that domed ceiling in your selfie shot. Is that beautiful or what?

Santa Claus

It’s not every day you can view a twenty-two-foot tall concrete Santa Claus sculpture. “Dedicated to the children of the world,” it dates back to 1935. You’ll see it just outside The Santa Claus Museum & Village.

Another Santa Claus statue? But of course! This time, you will head to the Santa Claus Post Office. Get your pic with the big guy in red located outside the post office. It’s the only post office in the world with that name.

There’s a big Santa statue outside Santa’s Lodge. Get your selfie with this Santa too.

If you love theme parks, you will likely visit Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari. Your selfie mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take your selfie in front of your favorite attraction. Tag it and don’t forget to tell everyone where it is and why you love it.

Go to the Spencer County Visitor’s Bureau. Snap a selfie with any of Santa statues they have outside.

You have to visit Santa’s Candy Castle. If you decide to get the frozen hot chocolate, and you should, get a selfie with it. Otherwise, take your selfie outside with the big guy in red in front of the unusual building.

St. Meinrad

The Saint Meinrad Archabbey is in a tiny unincorporated community–but this Archabbey is one of only two in the United States and one of eleven in the world. Walk across Highway 545 to get to the St. Joseph Shrine. Share the peacefulness.

Don’t leave the Saint Meinrad Archabbey just yet. We stumbled onto the Monte Cassino Shrine on accident. What a surprise! Though at the time of this writing it is being restored, see if you can’t get a pic of it somehow anyway.

You can’t miss the giant melting snowman. It’s only found at Frosty’s Fun Center. Get your pic with melting Frosty as the backdrop.

Then head outside and snap a selfie of the Buddha head.

Visit as many of the locations below as you can and snap a selfie. A selfie is simply a pic you take yourself, of yourself that may include others.

Let everyone see what you are doing! We would love to read your thoughts on the attraction or area you visited so be sure to include your comments and insider tips so everyone can get the most out of their adventure.

Share it on the Little Indiana Facebook Page, share it on your own Instagram account, and/or also your Twitter account, accompany your entry with the hashtag #LittleINSelfie and tag Little Indiana on the appropriate social network.

Get a shot of the exterior of the 1840 Mansion House Inn and Salisbury Courthouse. It’s an 1811 courthouse–the oldest existing log courthouse in the entire Northwest Territory.

You say the courthouse is switching locations? No way. Cannon fire said otherwise. Snap a selfie in front of the old jail where “Black Betty” (the cannon) was used in a desperate attempt to keep the Centerville as the county seat. (Many believe the building to be the old courthouse but that was located elsewhere).

Head to “The Gorge” otherwise known as Whitewater Valley Gorge Park. Brave folks can get a shot on the swinging bridge.

It’s one of our favorite places in all of Wayne County–and a too well-kept secret. Get your selfie at Thistlewaite Falls (and get your fossil hunting on).

Whether you are just starting to travel with your kids or you are a pro, if you’ve been looking for unique Indiana attractions for the family, you will find them right here. We all have our favorite destinations. Our kids have been to all the big attractions. But what if we try to do things a bit different this year?

This list is all about pointing out those places that are a bit more under the radar. You won’t typically have to fight huge crowds, wait in long lines, or have to shell out a lot of money for admittance.

It’s all about ditching the stress and the routine of everyday life and making positive memories that last. Of course, there are many other unusual and special kid-friendly destinations that could have made this list. But this time, let’s just focus on the following. Maybe the next post will feature your favorite family-friendly Indiana attraction.

You never can tell.

At the very least, I hope you feel inspired to take action, to travel with your family, and to stop letting your kid’s age or stress hold you back. After all, we are just getting started.

Great Indiana Attractions for the Family

Squire Boone Caverns Zipline Adventure

Kids prepare for their own big adventure on a zipline just their size.

How many times have you had to say, “You can’t do that until you are older?” I’m guessing it is more than a few. But adventurous kids want to play too! Brave boys and girls can now enjoy a zipline just their size. For those weighing between 30 lbs. and No, it isn’t so tiny that they will feel coddled or babied. Instead, they begin just like the adults and need to get all geared up.

Whoever is going to zipline needs to wear the appropriate clothing. You can view more about that at the link above. For the basics, no sandals. You need closed-toe shoes here like sneakers or hiking boots. They will wear a helmet and the safety harness. As you can tell from the image above, it is pretty exciting stuff. Donning a safety harness and helmet just like the adults is guaranteed to put a smile on any kid’s face.

After the kids are geared up and ready to roll, they will learn how to zipline. It’s a smaller space a hop, skip, and a jump away from the actual course to help them get their bearings. After they’ve learned how to slow down and feel ready to take on the bigger challenge, they get to move to the actual kid’s zipline.

Just for the record, the adult zipline is made for anyone at least seven years old and weighing a minimum of 65 lbs. They will privately weigh you to see that you make the cut. For anyone feeling a little shaky about the heights, the kid’s zipline is perfect for the elementary school-aged set.

You don’t need to worry about safety. Squire Boone Caverns Zipline Adventure heed the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) standards for installation, maintenance, and operation. You are in good hands here. The staff are nice, funny, and add to the experience. For any last minute jitters, they will help you feel at ease and ready.

Take advantage of coupons and group rates for the Squire Boon Caverns Zipline Adventure. When you are all done ziplining, you can easily head to the cavern for a tour. It’s a win on so many levels.

The only difference, other than the lack of pirates but with an abundance of ninja, is that the treasure is fossils. Absolutely everywhere you look at fossils, both big and small. Some are part of large pieces of rock while others are tiny and fit in your hand (or your pocket).

Getting started is easy. Grab a Whitewater Valley Fossil Trail Passport at the Old National Road Welcome Center in Richmond or find one at the Joseph Moore Museum on the campus of Earlham College. That museum in itself is worth a look.

As you may note, you can keep tabs on the fossils you find. This area, some 445 million years ago, was once covered by an ocean. These fossils are what remain. Seek out at least five fossils on the list. If you achieve your goal, take them with you to one of these two locations to get your free badge:

It’s a peaceful area once you can find it. Located along a road, you can expect a bit of a walk before you get to the falls. You will likely feel as though you are in the wrong place. That feeling will let you know you are doing just fine. It’s just gorgeous here. If you plan your trip for a warm day then bring your swimsuit. On nice days people even swim here.

Head back to downtown Richmond for plenty more to see and do. There’s a museum of antique bicycles, a great bookstore, and all kind of shops and restaurants. Yes, even farm to fork restaurants.

Sometimes, you just don’t want or need a full-on getaway. Visiting the town or city next door is a great way to blow off some steam without all the driving. If you are in the area, and you love pinball, like I love pinball, you can’t find a more way to spend an afternoon or evening than with a visit to Main Street Amusements in downtown Lafayette.

When I was a kid, I was also unbelievably cool and bowled two out of three shifts every Saturday. During the middle shift downtime, if I wasn’t helping out for fun at the lane (really, I did nothing more than get shoes, spray shoes, and hand out change. It was fun! I was only 12 and it was like a second home as involved in it as I was).

But when I wasn’t doing anything, my dad (who coached) was very free with his quarters. I hate to think of how much money I spent every weekend playing pinball (or Galaga, Centipede, or Street Fighter II). I get to relive those glory days when kids gathered around to watch my skillz.

You too can experience the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and the satisfying plink a quarter makes when you feed a pinball machine. There are way vintage pinball games here as well as new pinball games and an assortment of arcade games.

As the owner says, “We work on everything from old electro-mechanical games to the latest games from Stern and others.” So if you have one of your own that needs a little TLC, you know where to go.

Froehlichs Outfitter and Guide Horse Rides in Cannelton, Indiana are the only authorized Hoosier National Forest horseback riding experience.

Try a change of pace. Visit Froehlich’s Outfitter and Guide Horse Rides in Cannelton, Indiana for a horseback riding experience like no other. This is the only authorized guide for the Hoosier National Forest.

In other words, you may expect fabulous views, excellent company, gentle horses, and a whole new view of the forest. After all, owner Christie, her husband, and their sons all contributed their hard work to make these trails. That wasn’t the only hard work involved in becoming the one and only guide horse outfitter in all of the Hoosier National Forest. She had to deal with endless paperwork–fourteen years worth of it, in fact.

That should give you some hint as to her dedication and commitment to the horses, the trails she has made, and her horses. First-time riders don’t need to worry. Christie knows her horses. She’ll pair you and yours with a horse to match. The youngest of riders can sit with an adult. The horses know what they are doing and where they are going. It’s an easy, scenic ride.

There’s an assortment of trail lengths to choose among. A longer tour even includes a peek at a cave. Isn’t that something? If your group is on the quiet side, Christie has said that many people see an assortment of wildlife while riding the trail.

For any kid that loves horses, and you know every kid loves horses, you won’t go wrong making your way to Cannelton, Indiana. Spend the afternoon or morning enjoying the trails. The rest of the time, well, you will find plenty of interesting sites and things to do throughout the rest of the area (and Perry County).

Located away from the busy downtown, it’s a quiet, relaxing, and educational break. You know, exactly what a vacation should be.

You’ve been to Nashville, Indiana plenty of times. Most likely you’ve stuck to the usual places. You probably popped into Miller’s Ice Cream House or Fearrin’s Ice Cream and Yogurt Depot, feel inspired at Weed Patch Music Company, and you head over to Schwab’s Fudge for treats to take home. The kids, of course, are treated to Copperhead Creek Gem Mine. But if you venture beyond the typical downtown locales, you and yours have the opportunity to try something completely different. You, my friend, can surprise the fam with a trip to an alpaca farm.

When you approach the gate, you’ll see the alpaca perk up. They know what that means! Snacks. Glorious, delicious snacks.

Alpaca are gentle, timid, and sweet little creatures. Unlike llamas, who often play the role of alpaca protector at many an alpaca farm, alpaca are so gentle that you can have them eating out of your hand. Did you know that alpaca are so social they would die if split apart from the rest of the herd?

Owner Bill knows plenty about the alpaca. You will make your way around the pen, hand-feeding the alpaca, and learning a little something in the process. Little kids, in particular, will be wowed by the experience. After all, these aren’t tiny little animals, like the kind they are used to seeing up close and personal at any petting zoo. Alpaca are tall but those big, heavily lashed eyes keep them from seeming frightening.

Is there a special needs child in your family? Owner Bill had shared that the alpaca had treated his recent guest extremely well. The alpaca hurried over to see him. Your child will get a giggle over it too.
