I flew to Hokkaido from Osaka using a domestic flight and I must say the New Chitose Airport is quite impressive. It's super efficient, easy to navigate, and they have many Hokkaido special delicacies. Some people visit Hokkaido by JR Pass, but actually the main stop of the Shinkansen is Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station which is another 3 hours from Sapporo. So, if you want to save time, travelling by air to Sapporo from another city in Japan is the fastest choice.

The Donquijote opens until late midnight, I really had a good time exploring since I couldn't sleep early.

As the day winds down, head towards the vibrant entertainment district of Susukino. It's the perfect base to experience Sapporo's energetic evenings.

I must say that Sapporo is by far one of my most favourite cities in Japan. It is modern but also quiet. Convenient but not too bustling. Many of the shops and restaurants close at 8 or 9 pm, I guess the city is great for an early riser! I would love to explore other cities in Hokkaido next time and maybe exploring the ski destination.

How to go to Nikko:

1.Tobu Railway Direct Limited Express (direct): From Tobu Asakusa Station in Tokyo, take the Tobu Limited Express trains (Spacia Kegon or Revaty Kegon) directly to Tobu-Nikko Station in seven stops (about 2 hours) and cost about 2850 yen. The limited express train is more convenient as it is a direct train and is equipped with numbered seats which you can recline.

2.Tobu Skytree Line then change to Tobu Nikko Line: This is a local service train thus it takes longer to arrive. From Tokyo Skytree station in Tokyo, take the Tobu Skytree Line to Minami-Kurihashi Station. Upon arriving, transfer for Tobu Nikko Line which stops at Tobu Nikko Station. Total travel time is about 2,5 hours and cost about 1.400 yen.

What to do in Nikko and must visit places

1. Lake Chuzenji

Lake Chuzenji is a captivating natural gem located at 1,269 meters above sea level, making it Japan’s highest natural lake. Formed about 20,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption of Mount Nantai, the lake sits at the foot of this sacred volcano, offering stunning alpine scenery. Its largely undeveloped, forested shores provide a peaceful retreat, with the exception of the eastern end where the small hot spring town of Chuzenji Onsen and the famous Kegon Falls are found. The lake is renowned for its seasonal beauty—vibrant green in summer, spectacular autumn foliage in October, and serene snow-covered landscapes in winter. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as boat cruises offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, hiking the 25-kilometer trail around the lake, taking sightseeing cruises to appreciate panoramic views from the water, fishing for trout, and canoeing or kayaking in the warmer months.

Historically, the area was a favored summer resort for foreign embassies, whose villas still stand as a testament to this heritage. With its combination of natural splendor, recreational opportunities, and cultural sites, Lake Chuzenji offers a refreshing escape and a rich experience for all who visit. There are also many lakeside cafes and restaurants serving local specialties.

2. Nikko Downtown

This spring I had the chance to be back at Park Hotel Tokyo and it's my second time in the vicinity. At Park Hotel Tokyo, the rituals are simple - enjoy the art and the view, breathe deeper, sip the matcha, stay longer. Each corner speaks a colour and beauty, from the artist room, to the art in every floor, to the tall windows framing the Tokyo Tower and Mount Fuji in the distance. In a city that is bustling and where everyone in the social media demands us to move faster and see everything, it reminds me of the beauty of noticing the simple things, slow travel, nurturing the inner child, and the little luxury in life.

Nestled in the heart of Tokyo's Shiodome district, Park Hotel Tokyo isn’t just a place to stay—it’s an immersive art experience. With an artist‑in‑residence program, gallery‑like public spaces, and curated cultural rituals, this Tokyo hotel transforms your stay in Japan into a one-of-a-kind experience. For me, a hotel stay is as important as the entire trip itself, so choosing the hotel that reflects my love of slow travel and art gives my entire trip an added value. The hotel is filled with numerous room hand painted by different artist so every stay is unique no matter how many times you come back to.

The location itself is conveniently located at Shiodome Media Tower and it is directly connected to the underground subway station. Nearest station is Shiodome Station (Oedo Line) or Shimbashi Station. It is also has a 24 hours convenience store on the underground connection. Artist Queen Room: Window and Chair by Kei Sugiyama

My stay begins with a room unlike any other—part sanctuary, part gallery. The Artist Room Queen no. 45, envisioned by Kei Sugiyama, transforms the 22 m² space into a bespoke art piece. Each Artist Room reflects its creator’s vision, making each stay unique. The room is located at the 34th floor, thus I have a lovely bird eyeview of the Hamarikyu Gardens (浜離宮恩賜庭園) across the hotel. The artwork is inspired by the view outside the window and the artist envisions a space where each wall had a window and it serves as a bridge of the interior and the external world. Oftentimes, the artist also uses chairs as a metaphor for people. The chairs is a reflection of their owners and they are drawn like a group photo with various muted colours and the artist's signature bold lines.

The room is adorned with a queen size bed, a lounge chair and ottoman, a writing desk, LCD TV, built in wardrobe. The bathroom is equipped with a spacious bath tub where I can unwind after a long day walking. I think the room size is quite generous compared to the regular hotel rooms you find in Japan. Bathroom amenities are from Thailand brand, Thann, and the hotel has sustainable amenities as well. Overall the room offers guests a unique opportunity to sleep amidst original art, providing a serene and inspiring environment. My other stay experience at the Artist Room King can be seen here.

Breakfast and Afternoon Tea Set

Each morning is fuelled with healthy and scrumptious breakfast as a start. Dining at Park Hotel Tokyo is an artistic experience in itself. The ART colours Dining on the 25th floor offers an all-day dining experience in a sophisticated setting surrounded by artworks. I started my day with the hotel’s sublime breakfast buffet—a fusion of Western pastries and Japanese staples like miso soup and salmon, with made-to-order eggs and organic sides.

In the afternoon, after I'm back from exploring outside, I had the chance to try the seasonal afternoon tea inspired by a garden adorned with vibrant spring blooms. There are 3 tiers of sweets and savoury delights, 2 scones and jam, unlimited coffee and tea from the selection. Every piece has its own distinctive and unique flavour and texture. This experience is available by reservation and includes a 120-minute free refill of coffee and tea. Guest can expect to experience the Summer Resort Afternoon Tea in June.

Art Gallery Lobby & Corridor Gallery Experience

In the evening, after I'm back from dinner I take my time to explore each of the floor with different artworks and theme by different galleries in Tokyo. The art experience begins the moment you step off the elevator onto the 25th floor. Here, the lobby doubles as an art gallery: soaring atrium, rotating exhibitions in sculpture and paintings, comfortable lounge seating, and sweeping skyline views. From floors 26 to 34, the Corridor Gallery continues the journey: curated art lines the hallways, making your stroll to the room feel like a mini-museum visit. The artwork exhibited is also rotated throughout the season.

Tea Ceremony & Enjoying The View

In the evening, I ended the day with a glass of wine in my hand and a sparkling Tokyo Tower view in the distance. It feels so relaxing and wonderful to have this view right at your hotel. You don't have to fight with the crowds to get the view. Floor-to-ceiling windows in some guest rooms and lobby frame Tokyo Tower, and on clear days, even Mt. Fuji appears in the distance. Every guest also enjoys access to the Executive Museum Lounge on the 25th floor, featuring free self-service drinks—coffee, espresso, cocoa, teas, and soft drinks. From 2 pm to 1 am, you can also purchase alcoholic options like draft beer, wine, and sake by glass.

To deepen guests' cultural experience, Park Hotel Tokyo offers opportunities to participate in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. These ceremonies provide a serene escape from daily life, allowing guests to appreciate the art of tea-making and the tranquility it brings. The tea ceremony is guided and performed by a beautiful lady in kimono and she made usucha for all of the guests participating. The tea is so simple but heartwarming, served in a tray with sweets. It is a wonderful added touch to my stay.

Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine

Nikko Toshogu Shrine (日光東照宮 | Nikkō Tōshōgū) is a UNESCO World Heritage site noteworthy not only for its majestic sculptures and colors, but also for its Gongen-Zukuri architectural technique which blends Shinto and Buddisht elements and ideological background. For example, the "Sleeping Cat" and the first carving of the famous "Three Monkeys (See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil)" are not just decorative, but are filled with deep meanings. The entire complex is lavishly adorned with gold leaf, lacquerwork, intricate wood carvings, and color. This opulence was meant to reflect the power of the Tokugawa shogunate.

It is also a mausoleum site of the first Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Furthermore, the layout and details of the architecture are influenced by feng shui and onmyodo, reflecting the ideas of the time as well as implementing the buildings to be in harmony with its natural surrounding of cedar forest. Originally built in 1617, the shrine was later expanded by his grandson Tokugawa Iemitsu into the lavish complex we see today. Unlike most Shinto shrines that are minimalist in design, Tōshōgū is unapologetically ornate—covered in gold leaf, detailed carvings, and vibrant colors. I stood in front of the Ishidorii (stone Tori) of Tōshōgū Shrine in the middle of the rain and 7 degrees weather, I felt an eerily familiar feeling as if it says “welcome back”. This place is one of my main reasons of this trip and I am so glad to be here. Did I have a past life in Nikkō? Maybe only my soul knows.

How To Go to Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine

Located within Nikkō National Park, the shrine is surrounded by tall cedar trees, adding a mystical atmosphere, especially when mist covers the area. You can reach Nikkō by taking the Tobu Limited Express from Asakusa or the JR Tohoku Line from Tokyo and it takes about 2 hours. Nikkō Toshogu Shrine is located at 2301 Sannai, Nikkō, Tochigi 321-1431, Japan and once you are in Nikkō, you can reach it by taking the bus 2B from Tobu Nikko Station and alight at Nishisando Iriguchi bus stop. The entrance fee to the shrine is 1600 yen and you can buy it in front of the gate by using cash, credit, or suica card or you can also book it online.

The Shogunate of Japan was a period of military rule that lasted fo from 1192 to 1868, during which powerful military leaders, known as shoguns, wielded significant political power while the Emperor held a more ceremonial role. Three distinct shogunate periods are recognized:

Kamakura Shogunate (1192-1333):
Founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo, who was granted the title of shogun by the emperor.

Highlights of Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Each structure feels like a page from a storybook, with mythical creatures, dragons, and wise sages carved into every beam and panel. As you wander the grounds, you can’t help but feel the presence of centuries of history watching silently from the trees.

Yomeimon (眠り猫) Gate
The "Yomeimon Gate" is one the most lavish gate in the world decorated with more than 508 sculptures of human and mythical animals, and is gilded with 240,000 real gold leaf sheets. Known as the “Gate of Sunlight,” this stunning entrance is an explosion of craftsmanship.
5 Storied Pagoda
The five storied Pagoda is located near the entrance and each floor represent the elements of existence in ascending order: earth, water, fire, wind, and void.
Sanjinko
The Kami Shinko, Naka Shinko, and Shimo Shinko are collectively known as the San Shinko, and contain the horse equipment and costumes used in the "Hundred Items, 1,000 Warriors Procession" at the Spring and Autumn Festival.
Sacred Stables and Sambiki no Saru (三猿)
The Shinkyuya is a stable where the sacred horses are kept. Since monkeys have long been believed to protect horses, there are eight monkey sculptures on the nageshi. The sacred stables is famous because of the first carving of the three monkeys sculptures (See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil) They tell the story of life through a series of panels, reflecting Buddhist and Confucian ideas.
Sleeping Cat / Nemuri-neko (眠り猫)
At first glance, it’s just a peaceful cat resting above a doorway. but in Japanese symbolism, it represents peace and vigilance—a quiet guardian of the shrine. It is attributed to master carver Hidari Jingorō.
Karamon Gate and Gohonsha
A smaller but intricately detailed gate that leads to the inner shrine (Gohonsha). The Gohonsha is the most important part of Toshogu Shrine, consisting of the main hall, the stone room, and the worship hall. Annual festivals and other ceremonies are held here. You must leave the shoes outside if you want to visit the main shrine and no photos are allowed inside. The peaceful main shrine is where you can pray and take a moment to contemplate.

Shinyosha
It houses three mikoshi (portable shrines) used in the Spring and Autumn Festival (May 18th and October 17th).

Inner Shrine Oku-no-in (奥宮) & Mausoleum Of Tokugawa Ieyasu
Opened to public only since 1965, the Inner Shrine is the grave site of the first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate (last and longest samurai government in Japan which ruled from 1603 to 1867). You need to climb 207 stairs to reach the Inner Shrine. It’s a stark contrast to the shrine’s grandeur—simple, sacred, and serene.

Getting There: Take the Tobu Limited Express from Asakusa or the JR Tohoku Line from Tokyo. It takes about 2 hours. From Nikkō Station, local buses run frequently to the shrine.

Imperial Palace East Garden Tokyo

I had the chance to explore the Imperial Palace East Garden area (also known as Kokyo Higashi Gyoen), and needless to say, the experience was quite comforting and lovely. The Ote-mon (main gate) is where the entrance is located. The Imperial Palace East National Garden is part of the modern-day Tokyo Imperial Palace area, which is home to the Emperor of Japan. It has a long-standing history dating to the Tokugawa Shogunate era. It features picturesque views of Tokyo’s natural splendor.

The entire garden was used as a circle of defense with the construction of Sannomaru, Ninomaru, and Honmaru. It was built on the grounds of the Edo Castle, and you can view the remaining ruins of it together with where the Honmaru building was in the Honmaru area (inner circle of defense). Further walking down, you can find a Zen concept koi pond and a Suwa-no-cha-ya (tea house) built in 1912. I enjoyed the slow evening walk while going through different areas of the Imperial Palace and admiring the Tokyo skyline in the background. Even though this site is quite touristy, it is not overly crowded. The entrance is free, and I recommend it for you who would love to take a walk in the park while you are in the city center area.

Location and overview

The Palace Hotel Tokyo stands out as a premier destination that seamlessly blends luxury and convenience, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking the ultimate Tokyo experience. Nestled in the heart of the city and just a station away from the bustling Tokyo Station, guests enjoy easy access to key attractions while being enveloped in the serene beauty of the Imperial Palace gardens. Since its opening in 1961 and subsequent renovation in 2012, this five-star hotel has upheld its reputation for excellence, becoming a proud member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World Group. With its elegant accommodations and stunning views, the Palace Hotel Tokyo not only offers a lavish stay but also an unforgettable glimpse into Japan's rich culture and history. The hotel has 266 rooms with 18 suites and is now a house of 10 notable restaurants, including one Michelin-starred restaurant, Esterre by Alain Ducasse, Sushi Kanesaka, and an Evian Spa. It also won several awards and mentions throughout the year, including #9 Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Award, Travel + Leisure Top 10 Tokyo Hotels, and Forbes Travel Guide.

The area itself is a high-rise central business district of Tokyo, so on weekdays it can be quite busy, but on the other hand, it gets very quiet on the weekend. The hotel is directly connected to Otemachi station of the Marunouchi, Mita, Chiyoda, Hanzomon, and Tozai subway lines in the Marunouchi district through an underground tunnel. The hotel is located in its own building, so it is quite massive but private at the same time. Upon arrival, the check-in process is quite smooth and fast. The lobby is adorned with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, allowing natural light to come in. They also have a lounge bar in the lobby with live music on certain days, which is a quite famous spot to see and be seen. Although the lobby area might feel a bit businesslike, the room and the rest of the hotel changed my mind.

The Room

The deluxe room has a size of 45 square meters with a king-size bed, a bathroom with a separate tub and shower area, a mini-bar, a TV, and a seating area overlooking the Imperial Palace and Otemon Gate just across the property. Most of the room is carpeted and has an earthy color scheme and wooden interior; the overall design speaks of understated elegance. The room plan is quite straightforward, but the room is carefully decorated to make it polished. Extra touches include the extensive mini-bar with a Nespresso capsule coffee maker and an entire premium tea-making set by Jugetsudo by Maruyama Nori with Nambu-tekki tea pot and Mashiko-yaki tea cups you can enjoy in the room. The curtain comes with an automatic switch, and the entire light switch in the room is adjustable to create different lighting moods. These thoughtful features enhance the guest experience, allowing for both convenience and comfort. Together, they contribute to a sophisticated atmosphere that invites relaxation and enjoyment.

The bathroom is spacious with a separate shower with a rain shower, a Japanese smart toilet behind a glass door, a bathtub, and a gigantic sink area. The rain shower has one of the most perfect temperatures and water pressures. I always inspect it in every hotel I stay in, yet I still don’t know why I am doing it. The bathroom has a transparent glass panel with wooden blinds. They provide an entire line of bath amenities by Bamford and skin care. No need to worry if you don’t bring any of yours. The bath linens are made in Imabari, a city in Japan renowned for the quality of its towel manufacturing. They also have a kimono you can wear during your stay.

Restaurants and Facilities

The dining experience in this hotel makes it a premier destination for both food enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation. There are a total of 10 restaurants and bars in the vicinity, mostly located in the lobby and on the 5th and 6th floors, to complete your dining experience in Tokyo. One Michelin-starred Esterre, founded by world-renowned chef and restaurateur Alain Ducasse, presents a contemporary approach to the fine dining experience. What is visiting Tokyo without trying authentic Japanese cuisine? Kaiseki at Wadakura, teppanyaki at GO, tempura at Tatsumi, and sushi at Sushi Kanesaka (by Shinji Kanesaka) are your go-to places for the dining experience. If you prefer Chinese cuisine, the Michelin-starred restaurant Amber Palace can be your option. The Royal Bar, The Palace Lounge, and Lounge Bar Privé are well known among locals for their tea time set, cocktails, and live music experience.

Beyond dining, the fifth-floor facilities invite guests to unwind in style, featuring a state-of-the-art gym, indoor pool, and jacuzzi that cater to fitness and leisure alike. The Evian Spa further elevates the experience with an array of massages, facials, body treatments, and invigorating water exercises designed to rejuvenate both body and spirit. Together, these elements create a holistic experience that captivates the senses, making every visit a memorable escape into luxury and flavor.

Overall, design-wise it might not be my usual go-to selection of a hotel; please keep in mind that I like a modern, ultra-sleek interior and design. For someone who loves a more posh hotel without being too much, this might be a sweet spot. The hotel is huge, but it is also rather quiet and not that busy except in the lobby lounge area at night. Service-wise, everything is smooth and no hassle, a standard of Japanese hospitality. The hotel also offers several activities, including ikebana, sake tasting, and an art tour experience, which you can book in advance. These experiences are inclusive to the hotel guests, and I think it is worth mentioning. Too bad, I only discovered it after I went back and didn’t find out about it before or during my stay.

Final Round Up

Palace Hotel Tokyo’s prestigious location, view, and its own building give a unique royalty experience to your stay in Japan. The hotel design is elegant but not overly ornamented, with earthy tones throughout the building. 25Hours Hotel Jakarta The Oddbird Review

Overview and Location

As a traveller who loves hotels with unique designs, I was excited to stay at 25Hours Hotel Jakarta The Oddbird. The 25Hours hotel chain is based in Germany and they have branches in 17 cities in the world. The 25Hours Oddbird Jakarta is their first hotel in the Asia region. Each hotel has its own name and theme and they match it with the vibrant lifestyle of each city. The hotel is located in the Senopati, Central Business District area in South Jakarta and is also accessible via MRT (Senayan Station). It is also conveniently connected to Ashta Mall. The four-star hotel consists of 210 guest rooms and 135 apartments.

Upon arriving at the entrance, you will be greeted by their unique gift shop. The lobby is located upstairs, so you need to take an elevator up. The lobby design is a mesmerizing mesh of the hotel identity, a blend of retro and modern touches with the beautiful giant screen looping at the back of the check-in counter. To the left, they have a lounge as well as a mini cafe where you can order drinks and snacks. The birdcage-inspired seating upstairs is surely an eye-catching design. I can say that the hotel gives a breath of rfesh air to the hospitality industry in Jakarta with its own flair, as the high end hotels in Jakarta tend to have a sort of similar design. This hotel will surely attract those who appreciate a well designed hotel and rooms combined with the range of facilities available on-site.

The Room - Urban Large Room

The hotel has several types of rooms, namely Medium Plus Urban, Medium Plus Jungle, Large Urban, Large Jungle, Extra Large Urban and Gigantic Jungle. As I have mentioned above they also have some apartment rooms. Each has two types of room design, The Urban and The Jungle. My room type is Urban Large and it is located on the 21st floor. I feel among the two, the Urban design suits me better. It is 40 square meters in size and for a room in the middle of Jakarta, it is actually a generous footprint. The room overlooks the beautiful Jakarta skyline and buildings.

The room design is revived modernism with a blend of Bauhaus. It has an open floor plans with the bathroom on the left side upon entering the room. It is filled with mid-century furnishings, curated art, as well as vintage-style electronic devices, like the retro telephone and the vinyl player with curated music for each room. I have a background in art and design, and I was so stunned by the entire details. Those who are into art and design will certainly love the room as well. The combination of patterns of the wallpaper, curtain, and carpet makes an interesting combination with subdued colour palette and some pop of colour here and there. It keeps the room feel cozy and elegant without being too overwhelming. They have a spacious working area and I sat there looking at the beautiful weather outside, while the Chicago songs from the Crosley turntable played in the background.

Overall the room itself is sparkling clean with well well-working air conditioner. They add their little mascot, Jacky, as a nice touch of detail on the bed as well. The bathroom has a rainforest and handheld shower with a large vanity and a large sink with views overlooking the skyline as well. The water pressure and temperature adjustment from the rainforest shower was excellent. Toiletries are Oaken Lab, a local brand synonymous with minimalism and elegance. The minibar was filled with pod coffee, and tea, as well as a few types of drinks in the fridge. During the stay, there is a Freitag bag made from a recycled material that you can tag along during the stay. They also provide in-room slippers, bathrobes, hair dryers, and other beauty kit. They are very thoughtful with anything you might need during your stay.

The Food and restaurant available on-site

We had breakfast in the morning at Copa, which is served until 10.30 am. The buffet breakfast menu ranges from Indonesian food like rice and soto to a Western breakfast menu like salad, eggs of any style, and pancakes. To our surprise, all the food served was excellent, from the egg benedict to the dessert. I always choose the Western type of breakfast whenever I travel and their menu choices are well thought with fresh ingredients and combinations that guests can mix and match themselves. Sometimes, hotel buffet breakfast are skipped because even though they have a lot of menu but not all of them are great, but that is not the case in 25Hours Hotel. The variety of breakfast menus on different days was similar but was tweaked with several adjustments. Honestly their buffet breakfast is a game changer and it sets a new bar for typical hotel breakfast in Jakarta. Copa has both indoor and outdoor dining. The indoor furniture is a mix-and-match retro style furnishing while the outdoor area is adorned with a little waterfall and natural sunlight.

25Hours Hotel Jakarta The Oddbird has three restaurants and bars, namely Copa which offers Latin American cuisine, The Oddbird Bar, and Cabana the pool bar. On the other note, The Oddbird Bar brings you to the 50s with its mismatched furniture like the Eames style lounge chair and wooden furnishing. The bar was located at the back with several gigantic bird installations around it. They serve Latin tapas and various cocktails drinks from the classics to their house spin and it is open till late. The bar is located on the Lobby floor.

Gym, spa facilities, Cabana and the pool

Located on the 9th floor are their gym, Vida spa, outdoor pool and the pool bar, Cabana. As someone who likes to stay active, especially on the weekend, I truly appreciate a hotel with all of the facilities available on-site. Not to mention, they also have a bike which you can borrow to ride around the neighbourhood. The gym was equipped with various types of machines, yoga mats, as well as weights. The gym was relatively empty and I enjoyed my workout. Thanking the sunny weather of Jakarta, the pool bar and Cabana make you feel like you are in the Seminyak area. The pool area is an oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle. The pool size was adequate and it overlooks the sunset skyline. The Cabana also offers various snacks and can be visited by non-hotel guests. Its design is a mix of tropical and retro with the leaves print furnishing combined with rattan and wooden furnitures, as well as the retro pool chair.

Final Review

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay at the 25Hours Hotel Jakarta The Oddbird. It has a great location and is accessible via MRT if you want to explore the city. The entire hotel gives a breath of fresh air to the hotel choices in Jakarta with its own flair and design. It is perfect for urban travellers who appreciate unique hotel rooms as well as complete facilities on-site. The entire stay is also completed with top notch quality buffet breakfast.

Find a comprehensive list of Kyoto food guide below from different parts of Kyoto. From local cuisines to dessert, the Kyoto food scene is surely not to miss. The list is recently updated in 2025 and will be updated accordingly if there's any future travels. Sharing with you some of my favourites of Kyoto food list since there's a surge of travel to Japan at the moment. There's no better time to visit Japan and all the different cities! Kyoto was a capital of Japan until around 500 years ago. Therefore, the local cuisines and the ingredients they offer are immaculate and each dishes is a work of art on its own.

Gion Duck Rice

If there's one food that I would definitely go back to, is this Gion Duck Rice. The restaurant is known for its emoji logo and is specialized in hitsumabushi. We ordered the ruck rice with uni and ikura (2850 yen) and the portion is quite generous. It comes with a set that looks like your chemistry class! It gives you hot water where you can make your own soup with the bonito flakes. They also gives various seasonings like yuzu and wasabi. The duck meat was so tender and juicy and the uni and ikura gives a complex texture in one spoonful. The shop is located at the heart of Gion area.

Kichi Kichi Omu Rice

A great show on its own, Kichi Kichi Omu Rice becomes famous because of the way the founder cook the dishes! Not your ordinary dining place, you will be entertained by the way the chef cooks the meal with all of its trciks and performances. Flavour wise, the blend of rice, fluffy egg, and the sauce will make you wonder of all the previous omu rice you've had before. Reservation can be hard to get, it's better to reserve through their site in advance. The shop is located near Pontocho Alley.

Kyoto Tonkatsu Katsuda Shijokarasuma

We found this place by accident as we were heading back to the downtown Kyoto, but the dish was surprisingly good! Offering various meat like pork and chicken set, the Gyukatsu is a hidden gem near Shijo station. The gyukatsu is served hot and crispy but has no oily feel and you can feel the umami taste as you dip it into the sauce. The set comes with rice and potato salad as well. The shop is tucked in a little lane near the main street, so don't miss it.

Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu

One of the more famous gyukatsu chain, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu serves hot stone Gyukatsu where you can grill it own your own depending on your preferred taste. For me i like it to be medium well. The meat is tender with crispy outer. The shop has chain in various part of Japan and overseas as well, but the main store is located at the Pontocho Alley.

Nishiki Market

Nishiki Market is located at downtown Tokyo and it is connected with the Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. To visit it, you can alight at Kyoto Kawaramachi station and take a short walk. Each city in Japan has its own market and it is a delightful experience to visit. You can find various vendors selling fresh produce, packaged goods, dried food, to snacks. See my full review of Nishiki Market here. Spend an afternoon here and indulge on various food sold here. You can find many street food like the tako tamago, mocha, dumplings, strawberries, okonomiyaki, and many more. It's really the perfect way to try all the Japanese street food on your list. The market closes at about 5.30 pm (4.30 pm on Saturdays).

Sushi no Musashi

A conveyor belt ramen located at the Kyoto station, Sushi no Musashi offers a no fuss dining experience with fresh ingredients. The variety of sushi are quite a lot and those melt in your mouth nigiri is definitely irresistible. I tried many dishes from fresh salmon to scallop. With good value for money, this sushi place is perfect if you're looking for a dining place while waiting for your train.

Teuchi Udon Kendonya

If you love Udon more than ramen, you can try this Teuchi Udon Kendonya. Located near the Fushimi Inari Shrine. The famous menu here is their beef curry udon noodle, beef udon, and tonkatsu (pork cutlet). The udon is made fresh daily and the soup is so think and rich.

Ichiran Ramen

First timer in Japan need to try this hype ramen chain. This chain ramen is very popular all over Japan and they even have several branches in other country. The queue in this restaurant is always long, so make sure to come before the exact lunch or dinner time. Upon entering the dining area, you'll order the menu through a machine where you can pick your order and insert the money to get the ticket. The store is located Kawaramachi area.

It is located in the alley of Shinkyogoku Shopping Street and is designed by the well known architect Kengo Kuma. The brand has a commitment of using organic, natural, and locally produced products and you can see the process of making it in their open kitchen. Their donut is made with whole wheat flour and Miyama milk from Kyoto. They have around 30 kinds of donuts to choose from the glaze, to fruit toppings, to baked donuts. They also serves various drinks and their coffee is light and refreshing.

Eirakuya Main Shop

Eirakuya is a famous shop in Kawaramachi area, selling dessert, sweets, and confectionery for souvenir. The Japanese is well known for their crafts and food and I believe Eirakuya sums it all. You will swoon over fantastic packaging and dessert. I feel like I want to eat them all. Popular menu include Matcha shaved ice, mochi, pudding, dorayaki, green tea, and many more. You can eat your dessert at the cafe on the second floor and also bring some home for your loved ones.

How to go to Nishiki Market

Nishiki Market is located at downtown Tokyo and it is connected with the Shinkyogoku and Teramachi Shopping Street. To visit it, you can alight at Kyoto Kawaramachi station and take a short walk. Each city in Japan has its own market and it is a delightful experience to visit. You can find various vendors selling fresh produce, packaged goods, dried food, to snacks. Japan traditional market is clean, neatly paved, and has roofs along the way, allowing visitor to browse conveniently. I feel that walking through these alleys will awaken all of your senses, from hearing the chatter of people, to smelling the freshly fried tempura, to tasting the sweet gooey strawberry daifuku.

Food to try in Nishiki Market

There are several alleys and we stopped by every few meters to take a look and tried some of the food. We took about 1,5 hours to go through the market and we were quite full at the end of the trip. Here are some of the food that we tried.

Koe Donut
Koe Donut is perfect for quick breakfast before exploring the entire Market. It is located in the alley of Shinkyogoku Shopping Street and is designed by the well known architect Kengo Kuma. Tempura
An easy 5 out of 5, the tempura served was super crispy, has generous portion, and so tasty. They have various seafood tempura like prawns, eels, to vegetable tempura. The stall has a bit of standing space where visitors can savour the dishes. If there's any dishes that I would love to go back to, it definitely is this one.

Various seafood
Along the alley of Nishiki, there are many stalls selling seafood, from fresh ones to the cooked version of it so you can enjoy them on the spot. Had a chance to try some eels, kani, and scallops in robatayaki and yakitori style. The seafood were fresh and enjoyable.

Various Oden
Heartwarming dishes especially in the cool weather, Japanese oden comes in various seafood produce like fishball, sausages, as well as tofu. With each item costs about 300 yen, it is easy to get several in one go.

Shinkyogoku and Teramachi Shopping Street

The Shinkyogoku and Teramachi Shopping Street is located within the same are with Nishiki market but it is filled with retail shops, and cafes. There are various Japanese brands and also international brands that you find here. We also dropped by the Kyoto Samuran and Ninja Museum which I will be reviewing more on a separate blog post. Kyoto Heritage: Gion - Ninenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda, Kiyomizu Dera.

The City of Kyoto has its own charm. One of the reasons because it used to be the capital city of Japan in the 794 – 1868 and the city was originally called Heian-kyo. In the modern day era, it is still a major cultural and educational center in Japan as most of its cultural heritage was spared from World War II. There are many heritage sites like temples and buildings dated back to the era. One of the most famous heritage trail of Kyoto is located in the Gion area where many important hostorical sites, monuments, and relics are located.

Gion

Known as the one of the old town of Kyoto, historically Gion is known as rest area for pilgrims and tracelers visiting the Yasaka Shrine and a popular social venue for nobles and samurai before it became the major are for entertainment district in the Sengoku and Edo period. The area widely known where there are still a lot of Geisha, Kabuki, and other performances can be experienced. Gion maintained its charm with the cobbled streets, traditional architecture, and tea houses combined with nature. You can also experience wearing a kimono in Gion as there are a lot of kimono shops in the area.

Gion Duck Rice

We enjoyed strolling around Gion near lunch time and made our way to the famous Gion Duck Rice. I didn't understand why the place was so packed despite of their simple menu and emoji signboard. We waited for about 40 minutes and when it was almost our turn to take a seat, the waiter came and explain to us about the dish. When our duck rice arrived, then I knew the reason why. The whole set presentation came out quite fancy. The tender duck meat is so umami and flavourful, something i never found elsewhere before. Combined with their variety of seasoning, warm rice, ikura, and uni, every bite is a burst of flavour and texture. Don't forget to try the soup and you can also mix it with rice to create a bowl of chazuke. I told everybody visiting Japan that it is definitely one of the must try dishes in Kyoto.

Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda and Shrine

With our belly full, we made our way to the Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka path. This famous walkway is known with its rows of shops, food stalls, and inns. It leads to the Yasaka Pagoda and Yasaka shrine which is a Shinto Shrine where the famous Gion Matsuri event takes place yearly. Yasaka Pagoda looks quite gigantic and noble with its wooden structure and dark brown colour. The Yasaka Pagoda itself is a 5 storey tall Buddhist pagoda and is the last remaining structure of a 6th century Hokan-ji. The place is always crowded but it was still okay. We stopped by several shops like the Snoopy merchandise, Ghibli store, unique perfume store, incense store, many many souvenir shops, and several food stalls. The weather was quite cool so it was a breezy walk despite the uphill and downhill path.

Kiyomizu Dera

Continuing the Kyoto heritage trail, we made our way back to central Gion to Kiyomizu Dera. It is a Kita-Hosso Buddhist temple and is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site which opened in 778 AD. The temple is set on a picturesque background of hills and trees in spring. The temple complex is definitely a huge one. The main entrance is called Nio-Mon, reconstructed in 1500 after in was burnt down during a civil war. Another part of the temple complex include the Zuigu-do Hall, Hondo (main hall) which stands on the steep cliff of Mt Otowa, Okuno-in Hall, and the Otowa no taki (Otowa Waterfall) where the golden water is used for purification for six sense and to make visitor's wishes come true.

A special thing is that there is a site called the Jojuin which was originally built as living quarters for a priest. The building is now used as main sub-temple of Kiyomizu for maintenance of the temple buildings. Insides there is a Moon Garden, known as one of the most beautiful garden in Kyoto, which was only open to public for a limited time each year and we were so lucky to be able to go inside and sit in the garden. The garden was built based on the zen garden principle with various trees surrounding a pond with Koudaiji-san (mountain) in the background. It was definitely so tranquil, we took a moment to meditate and sit there just to admire the view.

Exploring Arashiyama Kyoto | Things to Do in Arashiyama

Arashiyama 嵐山 is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto that refers to the district as well as the mountain in the area. Apart from the bamboo forest, see the other part of Arashiyama to make the most of your visit in the area. To visit the area you can opt to alight at JR Arashiyama (covered by JR pass), Hankyu Arashiyama station (taking the Hankyu Arashiyama line) or taking randen and alight at Arashiyama Randen station. The path itself can be enjoyed in about an hour. It is a free entrance attraction and is suitable for families. Along the road to the Bamboo Forest, you can visit a Kyoto kimono rental shop to experience wearing a kimono while walking around in the area.

Katsura River and Togetsukyo Bridge

Don't stop at the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, but take a further walk to take a glimpse of nature in Kyoto. Walk towards the other Arashiyama Hankyu train station and enjoy the scenic route through Katsura River and Togetsukyo (Crossing Moon) Bridge. There is a famous Arabica coffee branc here where you can sip the coffee while enojying the tranquil view. If you are into boat ride, you can experience it while enjoying the view here with the Hozugawa River Boat Ride (Hozugawa Kudari). The end point is in Arashiyama and the starting point is here near JR Kameoka station.

Tenryu-ji Temple

Tenryu-ji is a Rinzai Zen sect Buddhist Temple complex in Arashiyama and it was ranked first among the city's zen temples. The temple was built in 1339. It has several sections including a beautiful Garden of Hundred Flowers, Kannon and fountain area, Daihojo (a hall used for ceremonial functions and events), Kuri (temple living quarters) Sogenchi Teien garden overlooking a beautiful pond. Inside you can also experience a vegan meal in the Shigetsu which is featured in the Michelin Guide.

Onsen experience in Arashiyama

We then took a turn to the Fu Fu No Yu Onsen after a long day of walking. It is an unique experience amidst the cool weather. Upon booking the onsen, you can put the shoes into the locker and head to the onsen changing room. There is a locker in the changing room where you can store your bags and belongings. They have both indoor and outdoor onsen. The shower and changing room is spacious with complete bath amenities. Hankyu Arashiyama Station

The Hankyu Arashiyama Station is another station in Arashiyama area and is operated by the Hankyu cooporation (different from the JR station and is not covered by JR pass) The open air station is not so big but it is quiet and pretty. You can take the Hankyu Arashiyama train here to go back to the downtown Kyoto by transferring at Katsura station for Hankyu Kyoto Main Line. The 6300 series EMU train is adorned with maroon exterior and green velvety fabric for the interior, which I think it looks quite nostalgic and sophisticated. A Day at Suzuka Circuit Park Japan

Car Racing culture in Japan

Some people have a dream to visit every Disneyland in the world, but one of my dreams is to visit different race circuits. Same same but different vibe I guess? 😜 Japan is really well known for its car racing culture and enthusiasts. Japanese car brands are also popular in the world and they develop sports line for the brand like Nismo for Nissan and Mugen for Honda as well as Honda Racing. F1 is not the only race held here, but there are also Super GT series, Super Taikyu, All Japan Sports Prototype Championship, and many more. Suzuka is only one of the many circuits in Japan, but since it is the place where Japan F1 Grand Prix is located, it has an international standard. Another circuits in Japan are Fuji Speedway, Mobility Resort Motegi, Okayama International Circuit, Autopolis, Tsukuba, and several others.

During my last trip to Japan, I had a chance to travel to different city and prefecture, which is Suzuka in mie prefecture. It was my first time visiting the prefecture. Coming from a busy city of Tokyo, Mie seems to be very quiet and serene. I guess it can be a bit crowded during the F1 season, but it is honestly a great time to explore the area.

How to go to Suzuka Circuit

Reaching Suzuka Circuit is quite easy! From Tokyo I took a shinkansen to Nagoya, which you can save by buying a JR pass. Then from Nagoya station I took a Kintetsu line train to Shiroko Station (you can take the Ise-Shima liner or the urban liner). Upon arriving at Shiroko station, wait at a bus stop that will take you straight to Suzuka Circuit! I stayed overnight in Nagoya specifically to do this trip and I think it is quite easy to navigate!

Suzuka Circuit Park and Ticket Cost

I bought the Suzuka ticket and park passport through Klook and it costs $30 (you can use my code STYLEFRONTIER for discount in Klook!) If you are also travelling and would like to try more attractions in Nagoya, Shizuoka, Mie, and Gifu, you can get the Nagoya Klook Pass to save. The highlight of Suzuka Circuit is of course the track itself. If you have an international license, you can also drive in the circuit with your own car and beat your own lap time.

Things to do in Suzuka Circuit Park

Aside from the track, Suzuka offers a lovely theme park for adult and kids as well, so it is actually a perfect day trip for a family too! You can find, jet coaster, ferris wheel, go kart, and many more. All the rides are automotive theme so it is quite unique. There are also an area for younger children to enjoy. One ride that I was eyeing for was the Circuit Challenger which allows you to play go kart in the real Suzuka Circuit track!

There are also several mini restaurants throughout the park, I had spaghetti and fries for lunch at the Course Side Pizzeria overlooking the race track. I'm not actually a fan of food in theme parks, but the food is surprisingly good. Automotive fans can bring various goodies and souvenirs with Suzuka Circuit park form collectibles to food. There are several shops that sell collectibles like the F1 team or the Super GT team merchandises as well as some car lego and car die casts. Of course I also snatched a tomica to add to my little collection!

Honda Racing Gallery

Recently open in 2024 during the F1 Japanese Grand Prix, Honda Racing Gallery exhibits successive generations of Honda race machines, engines and power units that actually competed in races, mostly in F1 races for which in 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of Honda’s very first competition in a F1 race. At the moment, Honda is supporting the Oracle Red Bull Racing Team with drivers Max Verstappen (F1 Champion 2024) and Sergio Perez, as well as Visa Cash App RB Formula One team with drivers Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo. The Gallery is designed with black as a basic color tone and places spotlights on each machine on display, enabling the visitors to see and feel the functional beauty of racing machines filled with the cutting-edge technologies of each era.

A day in Asakusa

I had a chance to visit Asakusa on my last trip to check out this unique are brimmed with culture, history, and tradition. Asakusa is well known as Tokyo's entertainment and red light district in the past. Think of it as one of the most hype and cool district even since the Edo era. To reach Asakusa, you can go through the Ginza Subway Line, Asakusa Subway Line, Tsukuba Express and Tobu Railway.

Visit Senso-ji Temple

Senso-ji is a buddhist temple built in the 7th century. The place is well known by its giant lantern and Kaminarimon gate. First built than 1000 years ago, since then Kaminarimon has been a symbol for Asakusa. The road to this site is approached via Nakamise Dori. The current site is a post war construction, since most of Asakusa area was destroyed during the air raid. Nevertheless, the charm of Senso-ji still stood through the test of time.

Nakamise Dori Shopping Street and Hanayashiki Street

Nakamise Dori and Hanayashiki area is well known for its retail shops, tourist souvenirs, and snack shops that has been running in the area for many many years. If you are visiting Asakusa, make sure not to miss these row of street. It can be quite crowded during the day, but it is still worth it to go through these stalls.

Kokono
Another delectable snacks, Kokonoe sells agemanju which is a deep-fried crispy bun stuffed with anko azuki red-bean paste. They have 13 flavours including sesame, matcha, curry, and pumpkin.

Meijiya Katsu
Perfect if you are looking for something savoury, the Meijiya Katsu is a hot beef cutlet with crispy outer. Apart from the katsu, they also sell croquette with cheese. The store itself was established in 1975.

Kagetsudo Melon Pan
One of the must try dessert in the area, Kagetsudo is known for its melon-pan, a melon shaped bread and you can have it in its original form or filled it with ice cream.

Have Coffee at Fuglen Asakusa

Fuglen is one of the most popular coffee shop in Tokyo and I had the chance to visit their Asakusa branch. Unlike the Yoyogi branch, the Asakusa store is more modern and brighty lit with high windows that allow natural light to come in. The interior is defined with light colored woods that gives the fresh modern look to the store. There are plenty of seats as they have two floors. I opted to sit by the window to enjoy the Asakusa street and people watching. Their beans include Cabalero (Honduras), Danche Espresso (Ethiopia), Halo (Ethiophia) among many others and the espresso beans is featured in rotation.

Harajuku Travel Guide: Fashion, Coffee, Things To Do

Harajuku is known worldwide as the fashion mecca of Japan. The area itself is a shopping paradise with many brands from the mid high end, street style brands, until cool local brands. There are also many dessert cafes and coffee shops in the area, making it a perfect spot for hangouts for the youth and alike. To go here you can take a train and make a stop at Maiji-Jingumae Harajuku station (Chiyoda Line/Fukutoshin Line) or Harajuku station (JR Yamanote line). I will share several of my favourite stores within the area below.

Harajuku Main Street Jingumae

Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku

Snap a photo or two in this iconic building. On the first floor find Shelter, a local brand store where the cool girls in Tokyo shop at. The pieces are trendy and quite one of a kind, make sure to check it out. On the upper floors you can find beauty stores like Isetan Mirror, Jill Stuart Beauty, and Cosme Carat.

Laforet Harajuku

Cool girls don’t gate keep. One of my favourite malls in the area is Laforet Harajuku. Two of my favourite brands, Vivienne Westwood Red label and Human Made can be found here. Inside the malls you can find various Japanese local brands as well as multi-brand stores. As a Sailormoon fan, I am glad to find the Sailormoon store here and it is such a childhood dream come true. Snacks shop like Nonara Pearl bubble tea and Ovgo Baker also have their store here.

Takeshita Dori

The center of Harajuku fashion, Takeshita Dori has a longstanding history in Japanese urban fashion. There are many local brands in this area selling trendy fashion items you can find skyrocketing in social media as well as a more unique style like punk or lolita style dresses.

Ura Harajuku

Located opposite the Takeshita Dori area, the Ura Harajuku, or known as Ura-Hara is a district with small lanes located perpendicular to Omotesando. The mid high end, street style, as well as local brands stores are concentrated in this area. I have walked in this area more than three times and yet again still able to find cool stores that i missed on my previous visit. There is no lack of brand varieties in this area for both men and women. Here are some of my favourites

Beams Harajuku Flagship Store

This Japanese brand is making waves in the fashion scene. You can find the Flagship store in Tokyo in the Harajuku area. The cozy minimalist store allows you to browse for their latest fashion and lifestyle collection and limited edition items.

This Is Never That

For a minimalist but trendy style, head to this South Korean brand, This is Never That. The store in Harajuku is located in a smaller alley which is easy to overlook if you don't pay close attention. The collection is quite extensive and they have a Tokyo special collection as well.

Liberty Walk

Car lovers must know this brand very well. They are actually a car customization shop which not only amazing at what they do but also have various cool merchandise as well. You can find their limited edition collab and drop like the Bape x Liberty Walk clothing items as well as the collector item Mini GT series, Inno model, Aoshima model kit and many more.

FR & FR2UME

This Japanese local brand sets the tone for the local fashion scene withs its street style pieces that are mostly loose fit. FR are the menswear brand meanwhile FR2UME is the womenswear.

Brandy Melville

This American brand sets its foot in Japan through its quaint two storeyed store in Harajuku. I personally love its exterior and interior as it brings the essence of the brands to live through its wooden rustic theme. Expect to find feminine and slight Y2K style in this store. Their sizes are great for Asian fit.

Jingumae 2-Chome

Definitely a quieter side of Harajuku, slightly underground, but famous with the locals. Harajuku Jingumae 2-Chome is a lane filled with bars, club, records shop, and more cozy restaurants. You can reach here by following the lane further up north through the Ura Harajuku area. It is so underrated among tourists but I feel you should check it out.

Bonobo

An epitome of Tokyo underground bar and club, Bonobo is the quirky multi storeyed club in Harajuku. Expect to find hype music with Tokyo's favourite artist like DJ @tomyam_kaoru_kun. They have cool lighting and tatami room upstairs for seat as well.

Jinny Street Gallery

Jinny Street Gallery is a unique outdoot art gallery in Harajuku. Its installations are placed on the roadside along Jingumae 2-Chome in a rectangular box and acts like a street lamp. They have rotating exhibition periodically, so make sure to check them out.

Big Love Records

Vinyl record collector rejoice! Big Love Records is a go-to record shop selling vinyl, cds, and tapes with various genres especially indie music. Their selection is quite extensive, so you can take your time to go through it. The space also has a beer and coffee bar combined with a retail space selling their merchandise.

Cat Street Harajuku

Cat Street Harajuku is a very long lane extending from the Ura Harajuku to the opposite area. I have mentioned some of my favourite stores on Cat Street in Ura-Hara above, so I will be mentioning the brands on the other side.

ON Flagship Harajuku

This brand is rising in popularity and the store here shows by the queue outside of the store. The flagship store contains a wide collection of their footwear series like the Cloudswift or Cloudsurfer series.

Ragtag Harajuku

For vintage items hunters, Ragtag is a well known store that sells various mid end and high end items for men and women. From sleek Commes des Garcons sweatshirts, Moncler down jackets. to vintage Prada Bag, you will be spoiled with choices.

Dessert and snacks to try

There are many snack shops and dessert cafes along Takeshita dori. Two of the most famous ones are the Santa Monica Crepes and Momi & Toy’s which have many flavours. Along the street you can also find animal cafes. For souvenirs and quick bite, Number Sugar is a famous artisanal caramel candy with different flavour varieties and it has lovely gift packaging as well.

Coffee shops in Harajuku

Streamer Coffee Company

One of many Streamer Coffee branches, the Harajuku shop has a rugged feel dominated by its black interior and cemented floor. It is perfect for quick pick me up or for a relaxing coffee time on its second floor.

Muun Seoul

This Korean cafe is tucked in the Ura-Harajuku area near the main street. This quaint little cafe will make you feel as if you are transported to Seoul with its Korean style dessert as well as its interior. Minimalist light wooden interior and furniture combined with pebbles on the floor gives the serene and zen feeling.

Neel

This modern coffee shop is adorned with its artsy pear logo. They serve espresso based coffee, cold brew, and pour over coffee, tea, as well as food menu like open sandwich and crepes. With indoor and outdoor seating, it is a sweet spot for taking a break after a whole day of shopping.

Koffee Mameya

Located slightly further away on the Omotesando side, Koffee Mameya is a highly rated specialty coffee shop in Tokyo. They serve a collection of various coffee beans from different coffee roasters around the world. Read my complete review here.

Human Made by Blue Bottle Coffee

Slick minimalist coffee shop by Blue Bottle, Human made is a coffee and retail shop under one roof. You can find espresso based drinks with their future or past blend, hand drip, and non coffee menu as well. It is a great spot after browsing the retail scene.

Mount Fuji Travel Guide

On my last trip to Japan in Autumn, I had a trip to Mount Fuji 🗻🍂 It was my first time to the area and glad to be able to see Fuji San. The Fujikawaguchiko town was so pretty and serene despite of the foggy weather when I reached. The air was chilly and spending time standing in awe looking at the mesmerizing landscape is definitely a little joy in life. Honestly, I was very happy and grateful to be able to explore the nature again 😊

DAY 1: Exploring the Fujikawaguchiko town

I took the express bus from Tokyo station bus terminal to Kawaguchiko station. The journey took about two and a half hours. The bus option is quite convenient as we don't need to do another transit unlike the train. For lunch I had Beef Cutlet Koushuya. This Gyukatsu restaurant is a treasured find 🤤 and is located around 5 minutes walk away from Fujiawaguchiko Station. After lunch I made a walk to the Fujisan Coffee Roastery. This little coffee shop is tucked on a corner road a few minutes walk away from the station as well. The town is not so busy but the station area is quite packed.

DAY 1: Oishi Park

富士山 - Admiring the beauty of the symmetry and the contrast of its peaceful surrounding. Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan and is an active volcano. It is also considered as a sacred mountain and a pilgrimage site. To go to this spot, i took the bus from the Kawaguchiko station and bought the red line sightseeing bus pass for two days. Oishi park in autumn doesn't have a lot of lowers, but the view is still lovely. It is located around Lake Kawaguchiko and is the last stop for the red line bus. You can view the mount Fuji across the lake. When i went there the summit was unfortunately hidden by cloud but the view is still stunning.

DAY 2: Kawaguchiko Music Forest

I stopped by the Kawaguchiko Music Forest with the lake view. The Music Forest itself is a museum and performance space with European style design and interior. Expect to find a live piano and violin performance in an indoor mini theatre. I think it was a right decision to have a little break from the rain. They played several theme songs from the classic Sleeping Beauty. Along the space, you can also find a restaurant, mini museum, and a gift shop. It has a lovely park with benches outside as well. For lunch I had Kanjyukuya Hoto Noodle which was located just across the Music Forest and is perfect to be savoured during the rainy day.

DAY 2: Lake Kawaguchiko

It was raining on day two afternoon, so I didn't really explore much as the view is very foggy. I went to the several pit stop around the lake. I checked out from the hotel and put the luggage in a coin locker in Kawaguchiko station then hop on to the red line bus again to visit the Lake Kawaguchiko. I stopped near the Funatsu Hama Onsen Town.

For the last stop, I dropped by the Fujisan Shokupan which sells delicate shokupan and flavourful pudding for take away. Afterwards, I am making my way back to Tokyo. Overall Mount Fuji trip is a lovely nature getaway not too far from Central Tokyo. I would love to be back again next time to explore the other part of the town and visit other viewpoints.

Nagoya Trip

Going from Tokyo to Nagoya

I had a chance to drop by Nagoya as I was on my way to Suzuka. The city is charming and more quiet compared to other cities like Tokyo or even Kyoto. Nevertheless, the city has various things to visit and I wish to have more time on my next visit. Nagoya station is the biggest one in the city with JR train, Kintetsu train, Meitetsu train, and Shinkansen station altogether. To go to Nagoya from Tokyo you can take a Shinkansen by using JR Pass or get an individual ticket for a one way trip. If you are going to many cities in Japan, of course the JR pass will be more cost-effective. I feel that in Nagoya, It is easier to stay nearby the station and there are many hotels available. There are several malls nearby the station, namely Kitte Nagoya and Gate Tower Mall. In each mall, there are many retail shops, cafes, and restaurant to try.

Food in Nagoya

The food scene in Nagoya didn't dissapoint. I came across this lobster ramen shop called Hayabusa Honten which is just five minutes walking distance from my hotel. The broth was thick and umami.with rich lobster taste. The medium thick chewy noodle combined with the chicken chashu was a delight in the cold weather. It is surely a memorable dish that I would recommend.

I also visited a coffee shop called Imom. The interior is a mix of futuristic and minimalist with silver, white, and black as the colour scheme. They have several beans to choose from and I ordered their iced latte with Ethiopia medium roast beans. Love the coffee, the ambience, and the service, will definitely be back.

Strolling around Nagoya

At night I took a stroll along the Fushimi Nishiki dori and Hori River. It wasn't quite far from the Nagoya station, just one stop away by the Higashiyama line. The weather was windy and there were already christmas light along the road, so I really enjoyed the walk. There is a mall called Terrasse Nayabashi that located just across the river. I couldn't sleep that night and decided to drop by the Mega Donquijote at around 10 pm (Apparently they close at 2 am). Donquijote here sells many things from fresh produce, beauty products, electronics, and many more.

Shiba Park Hotel Review - A Lovely Stay in A Library Themed Hotel

Hotel Location and Overview

Located at the heart of Tokyo, Shiba Park Hotel is an epitome of comfort meets aesthetic. Have you ever imagined yourself staying in a library? This hotel will make your dreams come true. With a 1,500 books collection readily available, this hotel is a heaven for travellers and book enthusiasts alike. Shiba Park Hotel is located is located in Tokyo's historic Shiba distric, conveniently within five minutes walking distance from Onarimon station (Mita line) or Daimon station (Toei Asakusa/Toei Oedo line) in Minato-ku. The hotel has a longstanding history as it was built in 1948. It is recently renovated and rebranded itself as a "Library Hotel" in 2023.

Across the hotel is Shiba Park where you can admire looking at the beautiful Tokyo Tower which is just 10 minutes walking distance. It is also actually pretty cool to walk by the Tokyo Tower every day. Minato-ku is considered one of the most expensive areas in Tokyo. It is so close to the heart of Tokyo, pretty well connected, and at the same time is a quiet and relaxing neighbourhood. The rest of the buildings in this area are mostly offices and residential buildings. There are also two konbinis just across the street, making it convenient if you need to buy a snack and drinks.

The Library

Shiba Park Hotel is a joy to explore. One of the features that will catch your eyes upon entering this boutique hotel is the exquisite floor to ceiling bookshelves all around the stairs with a water fountain below it. Upon descending it, you will reach the library lounge on the second floor. This open space allows you to leisurely read books from the available collection, writing in your journal, or working on your laptop. Find yourself tucked in one of the cozy lounge chairs while sipping coffee or tea (freely available near the reception) or perhaps a glass of wine. There are over 1,500 books available curated by the Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore. You can find many types of books available both in Japanese and English from different genres- fashion, art, photography, fiction, poetry, you name it. I had a lovely time browsing around the books in the library and immersing myself in it, especially about Japanese art called Kintsugi.

There’s also another lounge located just beside the reception area where you can read while listening to music. Similar to the sister hotel, Park Hotel Tokyo, every floor in Shiba Park Hotel houses a mini library with different themes on each floor. Guests can also borrow the books from the second floor library lounge or from different floors and read it in their room. The hotel is perfect to retreat to after you have explored Tokyo for an entire day.

The Room

I had a chance to stay at the Standard Twin Room. The room is pretty compact, but I had everything I needed. The design is modern and minimalist with a neutral tone. There’s a sofa leaned on the wall with a small table. Across the room, there’s a LCD TV and shelf equipped with a mini fridge and amenities for making coffee and tea. The bathroom features a decent size bath tub with sink and closet. They also provide skin care sets and personal care amenities. Overall, the room is sparkling clean with perfectly working air con.

The Food Selection and Facilities

Hands down, the buffet breakfast turns out to be amazing and one of the finest in the city. There are different sections from japanese, western, to salad, and bread. Different types of drinks are also readily available, including coffee, tea, apple juice, orange juice, and others. I am a fan of bread and their bread selections are lovely and well made! Overall food selection is excellent and I would recommend getting breakfast while staying here. For the festive season, they are serving Christmas Afternoon Tea features a variety of sweets and savoury selections from December 14 – 25, 2024 (7000 JPY). The menu features Chocolate mousse Opera style / Two-colored mooncake with salted egg / Jujube tiramisu with cinnamon powder, Christmas tree shaped sables breton, Truffle risotto croquette, to name a few. To complete your afternoon winding down time, the hotel provides free coffee and tea in the lobby. The hotel also has laundry machines and a microwave if you want to use it. They have a water dispenser on every floor. Shiba Park Hotel seems to be one of the more sustainable hotels in Japan. They use energy efficient lighting, water efficient with the towel and linen reuse program, refillable toiletry containers, water bottle filling stations, and no single use of plastic water bottles and straws. All the staff are welcoming as well and they speak good English. I think in terms of travel, service and warmth still plays a big part in selecting hotels and the team at Shiba Park Hotel really did a great job. The check in and check out process is such a breeze as well.

My stay from the start to finish was flawless. It is a luxury that feels mesmerizing, personalized, and attentive. Weekend in Shimokitazawa

Shimokitazawa, often known as Shimokita, is a hip cultural district with a nostalgic feel of Tokyo and is quite popular among youngsters alike because of its fashion and subculture. Narrow, mural-painted streets are lined with vintage clothing and record boutiques. Cafes, bookstores, pubs, and restaurants are aplenty, and every weekend there's a thrift market in the area. Exploring the streets bring simple joy and it is something I would recommend for those visiting Tokyo.

Ogawa Coffee Lab

With their first Kyoto shop opened in 1970 and a company dated back to 1952, Ogawa Coffee is a longstanding business in the Japanese coffee scene. Their Shimokitazawa store opened in 2021 and is a slow bar offering a coffee beans experience with around 25 variety offered. We tried several beans including americano House Blend Kyoto and Panama Deborah Nirvana served in pour over and latte with Panama Deborah Terroir beans. The space is a minimalist Japanese style, almost a brutalist. Giving the blank space and headspace once a customer step into the coffee shop. The shop itself is quite fast moving and is not exactly a cafe where you can sit for too long. Nevertheless, the experience was remarkable and would love to be back to try different types of beans.

Bear Pond Espresso

Bear Pond Espresso is a quick go-to coffee shop in Shimokitazawa famous for its meticulous coffee brewing. It opened in 2009 and has gain a cult of following until now. Their beans called the Flower Child blend is a dark roast mix of beans from South and Central America and Africa featuring flavour that has a hint of dark chocolate, citrusy caramel resulting in a rich full bodied espresso. Their famous creation includes "angel stain" and "dirty." Even the shop is small but this place is popular and there's always people come and go.

Reload Compound

Reload is a hip compound located in Shimokitazawa with a concept of a mini mall. There are several cafes and stores inside. It is also where Ogawa Coffee Lab is located at. Opened in 2021, it becomes a retail complex with a unique concept comprising of various individual stores inside. The open air concept, allows the building to blend with its surrounding, creating a modern but yet low key spot. Some of the interesting brands include Beams planet, APFR, Sekaiclass - a lovely ceramic and home goods store, Forestiere, Sanzou Tokyo - a curry shop meet an art gallery, Universal Bakes, and many more.

Vintage Stores and Weekend Market

There are many vintage stores along the way in Shimokitazawa. If you come here on the weekend, make sure to check out the community bazaar / thrift event happening. Usually there will also be a community music performance you can enjoy.
