One of the main twelve themes of my happiness project is marriage. For me, as with many people, my marriage is one of the most central elements in my life and my happiness. When I started my happiness project, and I reflected about the changes I wanted to make -- as well as the resolutions I wanted to keep in order to bring about those changes -- I realized I had five particular problem areas in my marriage.

1. My demand for gold stars. Oh, how I crave appreciation and recognition! I always want that gold star stuck to my homework. But my husband just isn't very good at handing out gold stars, and that makes me feel angry and unappreciated. I figured out a good strategy. I used to tell myself I was doing nice things for him - "He'll be so happy to see that I put all the books away," "He'll be so pleased that I finally got the trunk packed for camp" etc... - then I'd be mad when he wasn't appreciative. Now I tell myself that I'm doing these things because I want to do them. "Wow, the kitchen cabinets look great!" "I'm so organized to have bought all the supplies in advance!" Because I do things for myself, he doesn't have to notice. This sounds like a more self-centered approach, but it's really much better.

2. Using a snappish tone. I have a very short fuse and become irritable extremely easily ¨C but my husband really doesn't like it when I snap at him (big surprise). I've done a lot to try to keep my temper in check. I don't let myself get too hungry or too cold (I fall into these states very easily); I try to keep our apartment in reasonable order, because a mess makes me crabby; when he tries to make a joke out of my temper, I try to laugh along; I try to control my voice to keep it light and cheery instead of accusatory and impatient. Confession: I haven't made much headway here.

4. Score-keeping. I'm a score-keeper, always calculating who has done what. "I cleaned up the kitchen, so you have to run to the store" -- that sort of thing. I've found two ways to try to deal with this tendency. First, I remind myself of the phenomenon of unconscious over-claiming; i.e., we unconsciously overestimate our contributions or skills relative to other people's. This makes sense, because of course we're far more aware of what we do than what other people do. According to Jonathan Haidt's The Happiness Hypothesis, "when husbands and wives estimate the percentage of housework each does, their estimates total more than 120 percent." I complain about the time I spend organizing babysitting or paying bills, but I overlook the time my husband spends dealing with our car or food-shopping.

It's easy to see that over-claiming leads to resentment and an inflated sense of entitlement. So now when I find myself thinking, "I'm the only one around here who bothers to..." or "Why do I always have to be the one who¡?" I remind myself of all the tasks I don't do. Second, I remind myself of the words of my spiritual master, St. Therese of Lisieux: "When one loves, one does not calculate." That precept is the basis for my 11th Personal Commandment: No calculation.

5. Taking my husband for granted. Just as I find it easily to overlook the chores done by my husband (see #4), it¡¯s easy for me to forget to appreciate his many virtues and instead focus on his flaws (see #3). For example, although I find it hard to resist using an irritable tone, my husband almost never speaks harshly, and that's really a wonderful trait. I¡¯m trying to stay alert to all the things I love about him, and let go of my petty annoyances. This is easier said than done. I've found that working to keep my resolution to Kiss more, hug more, touch more is an effective way to help me stay in loving, appreciative frame of mind.

What are some mistakes you make in your marriage or long-term relationship? Have you found any great strategies for addressing them?

Tina can not agree more with the author--and she does get out of control in temper when she is tired...

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2010-02-06T11:07:22.2930000Z</dcterms:modified>

Joke of the Day: Her Birthday:

Joke of the Day: Revenge

A very shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering up his courage he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, "Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?"

She responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, "No, I won't sleep with you tonight!"

Everyone in the bar is now staring at them. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table.

Do you enjoy diving and snorkeling? How about exploring nature and wildlife preserves? If so, then it is highly recommended to visit Saudi Arabia’s Farasan Island. Farasan Island (Arabic: جزيرة فرسان‎; transliterated: Jazyrat Farasan) is the largest island of the Farasan Islands, in the Red Sea. It is located some 50 km offshore from Jizan, the far southwestern part of Saudi Arabia. The main town on the island is Farasan.

There is as much reef in the Farasan Islands as there is along the entire coastline of Saudi Arabia. As such, this makes the Farasan Island one of the most attractive and popular diving spots in Saudi Arabia and a favorite destination for Saudis and international visitors. The Farasan Island group is a large archipelago of Red Sea coral islands with many low-lying islands and islets. Some islands are bare and surrounded by coral, while others are sandy. The largest island is Farasan Kabir, being 66 km long and 5-8 km wide, and the highest point does not exceed 72 m. It has the greatest biological diversity of any site in the Saudi Arabian waters of the Red Sea.

In addition, the Farasan Island is home to the special nature reserve which was established in 1989. It is overseen and mandated by the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development. As a result of the protected status of the nature reserve, the Farasan Island now holds the largest gazelle population in Saudi Arabia. On the main island there are more than 500 gazelles which roam freely. Can you imagine the photo opportunities?!

Fauna of the Farasan Island include 231 species of fish, 49 species of reef building coral, 3 species of Dolphin, wide diversity of molluscus, crustaceans, large numbers of breeding seabirds as well as populations of breeding Ospreys Pandion haliaetus and Sooty Falcons Falco concolor. A remnant population of endangered Dugong Dugong dugon and the only known confirmed breeding site for Crab Plover Dromas ardeola on the red sea coast of Arabia are protected on Farasan Island.

For landlovers, this article would not be complete without mentioning that the Faifa mountains merit a trip for the opportunity to see some unique rock formations and lush green meadows in Saudi Arabia. And for those who enjoy history, a smaller island not far from the main Farasan Island holds the ruins of an old German-built Fort used during World War II. It is said that this fort had been a secret storage location for ammunition during the war.

Getting to Farasan Island is easy and enjoyable. The nearest airport is located in the far south-west port city of Jizan servicing flights from all key cities in the Kingdom . From Jizan, modern ferry services routinely go between the Jizan Harbor and Farasan Island. The Jizan Harbor is a picturesque site complete with the old traditional wooden fishing boats called dhows and which remain in use today.

The Farasan Hotel (966.7.316.1166) is a centrally located hotel on the main island of Farasan where many Saudi and international visitors choose to stay. This modern full-service hotel equipped with all amenities is a seven minute drive from the main port. The hotel’s Almurjan restaurant is known for serving guests with freshly caught delicious sea food meals.

For further information about Farasan Island we recommend the web site www.farasan.org (Arabic language).

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2010-01-20T14:34:32.4030000Z</dcterms:modified>

A Smile Everyday -- Tina's House

Besides the dive weather, another topic in discussion among the divers is the divie light. As there will be a few night dives, the organizor insisted everyone get a torch for himself/herself. "This is important." Tina remembers her first night dive in China, Bohai bay. It was shallow and she's got a companion. Both of them had a torch for themselves. Although with the torch on, Tina will not forget the feeling of fear overwhelming her as she looked down into the darness below... "Hope this time gonna be better, with a lot more people around."

Will one torch be enough?

Paul, one of the fellow divers, mentioned, for the big boy divers (smiling...), three light sources are required for each person: a primary, a backup and a chemical stick (Cylume). A lot of things to take, but definitely good for safety. Not everybody understands this? Here is a story...

"The Sailors' Cold And Lonely Night" (Diver Down, Real-World Scuba Accidents and How to Avoid Them)

"Tonya and Robert were a professional couple in their mid-thirties who were very athletic and active in many outdoor sports. Two of their most passionate activities were sailing and diving. ... They were also both fairly active divers. They had been recently certified as advanced divers and they took frequent late-afternoon or Saturday morning trips to a freshwater lake near their home just to get wet...

When Tonya received a big promotion at her job, the two found an ideal excuse to take an extended vacation to the Caribbean. They spent several weekends prepping Robert's sailboat and then a couple more weekends moving it down the coast of Florida to a convenient jumping-off point for the voyage to a popular island chain in the Caribbean.

...Desiring some spontaneity and lots of privacy on their trip, Tonya and Robert filed only a very loose float plan with family members. A float plan is an important part of any seagoing adventure because it is a method of alerting authorities if something goes wrong. In many maritime accidents, the vessel may be unable to establish contact with autorities or another boat or the sailors may not have time to establish that contact before abandoning their vessel...

...After adding more than twenty dives to their logbooks, Tonya and Robert were interested in more-advanced adventures...The divers allowed themselves to float on the very mild current, scanning the deeper water on their right side. By focusing on the dark-blue waters at the edge of the wall drop-off, Tonya and Robert were deprived of any reference that would have told them that the current flow was rapidly increasing. Twenty minutes into their 40-minute dive plan, Tonya looked around to check the reef. A chill of alarm washed over her as she realized that they might have drifted much farther from their boat than they imagined...

Robert and Tonya were now facing a serious situation. Surfacing, they found that they had been swept toward the north end of the island and were caugth in a current that they esimated to be one and a half to two knots...night was fast approaching, and they were moving farther and farther into open ocean with each passing minute...

Tonya removed her safety sausage...The end of the safety sausage had a holder containing a Cyalume lightstick. She snapped the stick to break the vial inside and shook the liquid to initiate the lightstick's glow--only it didn't glow...she recalled her local dive store at home remind her that the stick needed to be replaced about once a year. She had never used or replaced the lightstick in nearly four years since she had bought it...As the sun set, Robert pulled a battery-powered strobe light from his BCD...He turned on the light and was elated when it activated and bgan to flash....His elation, however, turned to despair about 20 minutes later when the strobe quit flashing..."when was the last time the batteries were changed?" Robert could not recall...Robert and Tonya...were now feeling the extreme cold that even the 84F tropical water can deliver. As exhaustion drove the divers to fitful dozing, Robert decided to hook their BCD straps together to ensure that they did not become separated...At 2:00 am they saw the lights of a large boat. It could have been 1 mile away or 10 miles away. Robert tried to scream, but his voice was hoarse from thirst, cold and the intake of sea water...
"The Sailors' Cold And Lonely Night" (Diver Down, Real-World Scuba Accidents and How to Avoid Them)

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2010-01-17T12:09:51.6400000Z</dcterms:modified>

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2010-01-16T11:56:35.0930000Z</dcterms:modified>

Valentines Day Story - the Rendezvous in Paris

January 10, 2010 by Shaheen Darr. Born in Kenya. Shaheen resides in UK. She is married and has 3 children.

Amelia watched the road signs gradually change, now more French than English and she knew the journey would soon be over. She folded the newspaper she had been reading and closed her eyes. No matter how hard she tried she could never fall asleep like the other passengers around her. She envied this gift some people had; they could drop off to sleep within seconds of a journey commencing, whereas she spent her whole journey just trying to stay awake.

She sighed to herself as she opened her eyes and without trying to seem rude she looked around at the people around her. The Euro star train was not as packed as was usually the case and towards the end of the train she noticed a man, probably in his late thirties engrossed in a book he was reading. He had thick dark hair with rebellious curls and she could tell he had a well toned body under the open leather jacket. She felt a wave of curiosity about the book he was reading and what would take this man to stop reading and look up and notice her. This random thought brought a smile to her face as she chided herself silently for being silly. She never had much luck with men anyway and why would today be any different?

Before long the train stopped and Amelia...(more...)

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2010-01-15T14:08:09.4730000Z</dcterms:modified>

Welcome to TINA's House

Welcome to TINA's House. 多多支持，谢谢！有什么需要告诉我。

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2009-12-22T14:22:07.2300000Z</dcterms:modified>

Talking about Sarah_Sonya_22

The weather is good now, around 28C or 30C at noon, but quite acceptable in the afternoon after 4:30pm. So if you walk around in the compound at that time, you will find people exercising everywhere in different ways--quite animated, especially for those wives who are staying at home most of the time and the only people they see most often are family members and house maid. Now they can well go out take a walk in the compound and enjoy others playing.

I registered for pingpong and fun games. But not really have much time to exercise, cause I am working full time. And when I am back home, I would like to spend more time with the children. But still sometimes I play pingpong a little bit with Jean-Marc or other colleague like Assim in the office. It is fun, and a change from the problems giving me headache.

Talked to the client for the first time in my life last Tue. Not so much enjoying this--cause need to be careful of what I am saying. Client is client. They are not SLB colleague. You can not be too frank even if you know you are right. This is the life of adult--looking at my 2.5 year-old son, he can say whatever he wants, like mama is fat, baba's teeth are brown... nobody will blame him. Responsibility!

Had a match with Assim and lost to him 2-1, 14:21, 21:16 and 18:21. Felt like I could not win--bad feeling. Hope I can be more confident during the qualification match of the Olympics. Cheers.

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2007-03-12T12:41:32.3000000Z</dcterms:modified>

security in Saudi

Three French men were killed by gunmen in Saudi on Mon, Feb 26, 2007. Another one was badly wounded. According to Yahoo news, they were a group and was camping on the desert near the holy place Mecca. Women and children in the group were not hurt. They were not sure this was terrorists or not.

Everything seems fine here in the east of Saudi, although two years ago there was a shooting masacar in SLB. This year, after the security review, the coefficient here is lowered to 1.4. Now the killing happened, although on the west. However, desert is the place definite foreigners like to go--there is no recreation in the cities and most part of Saudi is desert. What do we do except going campling in the desert? But the desert seems unsafe now. Jean-Marc's mother called last night to tell us not to go to the desert any more. Guess my mother still does not know this news yet.

We will have a SLB Olympics in Khobar on Mar 21. People will gather in Al-Mutlaq compound playground for tennis, football, vollyball, basketball, pingpang, squash etc... 3 days. I just hope no extreme people getting in the crowd and place bombs... :-(

First time feeling life-threatened in my life--at least I don't worry about safety back in China.

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2007-02-28T07:24:24.9630000Z</dcterms:modified>

Nostalgia

With the advent of mid-age crises, often get depression--no reason.

Looking back, maybe just because of leaving China too long? I left Beijing in May 2006, going to be one year. Since that time, very very seldom have the chance talking in Chinese. Very very seldom eat with chopsticks, even at home, Jean-Marc insists on using knife and fork, so that the children can be used to that. Very very seldom watch Chinese TV, although there is Hong Kong Phenics available. And most important, very very seldom chat with friends.

Did not realize chatting with friends are that important. First amazed by that is when Liu Qing visited Abu Dhabi and we had a chance sitting in a nice restaurant for hours. Just chat, anything, not for work, not for SLB, nor for anybody, just anything come up to mind. Really feel relax and happy after the chat, and the Chinese I spoke that time is much more than I did ever since I arrived in Saudi.

So suddenly feel like chatting today. But whom can I talk to--when I look at the watch, it is already more than 11 pm in China! In the end, just made a call to my mother. Although woke them up, mum is mum. She doesn't care... As to friends, need to calculate a time lou. Sigh...

Make an album of me--beautiful China, beatiful friends, and beautiful me. Cheers.

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2007-01-18T19:56:11.5800000Z</dcterms:modified>

bad weather, bad mood

Nothing works recently.

Prepared a proposal of sonic microstructure inversion. Presented to my manager and scientific advisor of the research center. Conclusion is: stop it right now. No budget for it now and we need to focus on the projects that have budget.

Applied to renew my saudi visa. GRO said the passport has been sent out from Dowell base to research center for more than a day, and still not arrive here. But the true distance between the Dowell base and here is no more than 5 km.

Need to apply for US visa. But my manager can not decide roughly when we can go. I need that information to arrange invitation letter from SDR and employment proof letter from saudi. So, wait... What's more, I need to go to Riyadh US embassy to apply for visa--that is about 4-6 hours drive and I can not drive in this shitty country. -- Really miss Beijing, so convenient. All the embassies are located around. Just got a taxi and go. I was still complaining the four hours waiting inside the embassy before the interview. But now--I probably need to fly to Riyadh, find my way to the US embassy and don't know how long I need to wait even OUTSIDE the embassy! Probably I need to wear not only the lovely Abaya, but also the wail on my head in Riyadh. Anyway I the most important is that I hope there will be no bombs or gun-shooting event at the time I go there...

Registered for a tennis course on Mon evening. But the coach did not show-up. Although he called an hour later saying that he left because it was too windy and rescheduled it to Wed evening, I still feel very disappointed.

GF license is a big issue. Have been chasing it for more than a month and still not come. Waiting for it to process ECS data. No matlab license available and need it to start the ECS work.

Anyway, just feel like everything is going againt me at this time--depressed. Maybe need some pineapples? Mid-age crises, I guess so.

Cheers for my 35 birthday soon!

<live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog Entry</live:typelabel>
<dcterms:modified>2007-01-16T10:20:37.9570000Z</dcterms:modified>

Custom List

<live:type>customlist</live:type><live:typelabel>Custom List</live:typelabel><dcterms:modified>2005-07-01T07:14:49.1470000Z</dcterms:modified>

Farasan Island, Red Sea Dive Trip

<live:type>photoalbum</live:type><live:typelabel>Photo Album</live:typelabel><dcterms:modified>2010-01-31T11:05:33.5100000Z</dcterms:modified><cf:itemRSS>http://cid-d4505120b1d1551e.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!D4505120B1D1551E!381/feed.rss</cf:itemRSS>

Oman

<live:type>photoalbum</live:type><live:typelabel>Photo Album</live:typelabel><dcterms:modified>2010-01-26T06:27:48.0500000Z</dcterms:modified><cf:itemRSS>http://cid-d4505120b1d1551e.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!D4505120B1D1551E!360/feed.rss</cf:itemRSS>

Scuba Diving 2009

<live:type>photoalbum</live:type><live:typelabel>Photo Album</live:typelabel><dcterms:modified>2010-01-18T09:41:02.8270000Z</dcterms:modified><cf:itemRSS>http://cid-d4505120b1d1551e.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!D4505120B1D1551E!337/feed.rss</cf:itemRSS>
