My review:

I should simply state this is a wonderful book and the perfect addition to any curriculum, leaving it up to you to discover!

With hundreds of illustrations, the World of Science is the perfect tool for teaching homeschoolers or any budding scientist wishing to learn just a little more about science and our ever changing world.

What makes our world so special? Who made these wonderful discoveries and when? And how do we convey to young minds the science revolving all around us?

Here are a few helpful facts included in this special edition:

- Section 1 deals with matter and chemicals and explains items from atoms. molecules, crystals thru composites.

- Section 2 deals with Energy, Motion and Machines.

- Section3 covers Electricity and Magnetism

- Section 4 explains Light and Sound

- Section 5 explains Earth and Life on Earth

It is worth 5 stars in my book (no pun intended!)

My review:

'Where Wildflowers Bloom' is the first book in Ann Shorey's series called 'Sisters at Heart' and since I like a good Historical novel, wildflowers and dreaming, the perfect choice for a rainy day!

Faith Lindberg lost her father and brother and lives with her Grandfather who owns a Mercantile shoppe. Faith hopes to sell the business, hopefully at a profit of course and move West. She dreams of starting afresh.

The story is set just after the end of the Civil War and I found the added characters of a field nurse as well as a scarred veteran just the right touch for this novel to be a little more than just a lovely romance.

Ann Shorey pens an interesting portrait of a MidWest town, and takes us on a stroll around the dusty boardwalks to the shoppes, local eatery, blacksmith shop and livery, sheriff's office, clapboard houses and the little white church with its spiked roof, not unlike time traveling in your armchair.

The mercantile shoppe comes to life with her detailed description of the stock with its many shelves of goods. I could almost feel the heroine's pain when she inadvertently drops the lovely china she'd hoped to sell and make a profit to boost sales. The fact that women rarely worked outside of home is once again the perfect detail to make this an interesting story!

With just the right eloquence Ann Shorey infuses readers with a sense of what life was truly for the settlers who made their homes in places such as Noble Springs, Missouri and the gossiping and sometime meddling of a small town.

She does not stop there however and you discover the past is not to be shrugged off easily, especially for the men who came back from war, some broken, many scarred.

With a burglary and even mysteries, the entire story evolves in just the kind of entertainment you need to relax!

A very nice story which earned 4 stars!

The Sweetest Mail Or Shall I Say Royal Mail...

It is a wonderful feeling when you pick up your mail and there is a little something special beside bills and ads! You just feel... on top of the world!

Today I received a small parcel bearing the Royal Mail stamp and discovered the special touch of Mademoiselle Poirot!

If readers will remember, I won Mademoiselle Poirot's giveaway a little while back and she graciously posted it and voila!

I could not resist taking a photo (or two!)

With her usual flair and elegance, Mademoiselle Poirot personalized my gift with a lovely handmade set of tags tied with a little bow to my new set of writing notes - notice the colour of the stenciled flowers, my favourite!

So Many Books, So Much To Choose...

I like to keep up with (some of) the latest gadgets if only not to sound like a complete nincompoop! I should amend this with a clarification: anything that has as few buttons as possible (I am electronically impaired!).

The era of computers opened doors in an amazing way and no doubt we shall agree, our world will never be the same for it. Where would we be without Internet for i.e. (or blogging)?

Like so many other inventions however, there is some good and bad in technology. The Internet and computers have enabled most of us to discover an amazing world of information at our fingertips! Then again, the accessibility of certain materials is sometimes unsuitable for a tender age! I will certainly not get into the availability of material NO ONE should be able to retrieve!

As my children often point out, I am very naive and I would therefore prefer to hang on to my daydreaming!

So this morning as I was browsing my favourites blogs I noticed 'Little Birdie Blessings' post about E-books.

Since I yearn for an E-book (one of these days I will get one) I read thoroughly each sentence and I agree wholeheartedly (see post here).

There are countless downloads available to the masses yet it is a little like couponing!

Why purchase an item simply because you have a coupon for it?

It makes no sense if your family will not use this particular brand so why not use the same reasoning when downloading a book/article?

And why would we debase ourselves in selecting a title in contradiction to our standard or belief?

Whichever faith we choose to follow, let's retain GOD in our day to day dealings!

The information we store and read on our e-devices
affects how we think.

Our thoughts affect the way we feel.

Negative thoughts, untrue thoughts,

all lead to stress and anxiety.

I know……..I’ve been there!

You’ve been there!

Finally, no one will doubt our love of books once you enter our home. There is something magical in opening the pages of a good novel or article and discover a whole new world, tucked in a comfortable armchair by the fireside.

Perhaps when I have an E-reader will I also feel the unexplained thrill of such a vast world of knowledge at the mere touch of a button (as long as we retain energy to upload)!

In the meantime there are many sites with free downloads available which I would like to share and you will find them listed here (see info).

So for now I will continue to cherish my books and try to choose wisely...

My review:

Unveiling the Kings of Israel is a fascinating compilation of archaeological history and together with great photos and detailed records, this is a great addition to any library. The author David Down is well known for his knowledge of History. Together with the Israel Antiquities authority he is regularly involved in new diggings in Israel and is a respected field archaeologist.

In this book David Down starts with an outline of the authority of the Bible and discusses the various points of view of other archaeologists including the type of historical information they use. He then shows there is a definite archaeological evidence for biblical accuracy. Beginning for i.e. with Genesis the author shows us that Noah's Ark may not have landed on Mount Arafat (Turkey) as most of us have come to believe but rather in a much more likely place. With clear evidence of a world wide flood, David Down discusses the possibility of Noah's descendants spread throughout the globe.

With fascinating facts and solid evidence supporting biblical stories including detailed maps, local legends and scarcely known details of the early history of Israel, David Down shares his extensive archaeological experience and his discoveries. I must concede it is very hard to make justice to this amazing book! Read it!!

A must have for homeschooling or any family library the book also contains 4 appendices of Tabernacle Life, Solomon's Temple, Dead Sea Scrolls, and individual tables for the Patriarchs, Chronology, and even Jewish Weights and Measures.

Definitively to be brought to your local library's attention as well, this is 5 stars material!

About the Author:

At 86 years old Australian missionary and archaeologist David Down's life is as fascinating as his books!

He describes his passion for archaeology started when his uncle asked him to a public meeting in Melbourne, Australia, during World War II.

Chasing Mona Lisa, Book review

My review:

The Mona Lisa's smile is a powerful attraction and I am certain Leonardo de Vinci himself smiles from above at the extent of our curiosity. I must admit I was very intrigued when I read the resume and it seemed to be just the novel for a long winter night.

Tricia Goyer was a factor in my choice since I have very much enjoyed her talented writing in 'Dawn of a Thousand Nights' and 'of From Dust and Ashes'. Readers find a talented storyteller in this author whose extensive well known fiction and non fiction work involves much research and a good amount of faith!

Chasing Mona Lisa's era alone should have held my interest but after a few chapters I puzzled at this particular novel's plot.

Leaving aside the improbable, albeit interesting historical possibility, it read very much like a 7th grader history lesson in internal French conflicts during Liberation and its questionable heroes and an art pamphlet!

Still, the Mona Lisa was stolen once before and we all know how much priceless artwork was appropriated by the Occupying Forces so why not her after all?

However not withstanding the baffling editing, i.e. one incident calls for a Ost soldier appearing yet two seems involved in the scuffle (?), the large Camembert (not even black market in 1944 could have produced this in the middle of the City of light) and the three pain rustique, reminiscent of the biblical multiplication of fish and loaves (?), you find yourself wondering if perhaps this novel was just aimed at young adults.

I had difficulties in visualizing any area of the Swiss border unchecked in 1944, a stupendous work of art hanging in a chateau's child room (do you really think such a possible billet for the Wehrmacht or Gestapo would not have been checked over if not appropriated?), or an airfield allowing Allied Forces to land and store aircraft in wartime Switzerland! (see here for info)...

This read very much like lots of facts thrown in for authenticity including the well documented OSS Colt .45, a smattering of French words and a detailed Swiss road map, all built around a plot which seems to leave characters (and readers) in confusion.

In the end, this book only brought a big yawn and raised eyebrows.

As co authors in Chasing Mona Lisa, Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey just do not appear to have a winning combination. This is their second book, 'The Swiss Courrier' being the first of their cooperation. For readers who are interested, some of the characters of Chasing Mona Lisa appeared in The Swiss Courrier.

I rate it 3 stars!

Not The South Pole Yet...

We are promised snow...a little or a lot depending on which part of the Pacific NW coast you live!

Logs are stacked nearby for the wood stove, bird feeders refilled, suet and peanuts hanging for my Blue Boys (Stellar jays), assorted emergency supplies readied, including the generator (in case we lose the power...yet again), oil lamps checked, candles just in case...

Suddenly it feels like our cabin in the mountains...

A white Christmas would have been a nice touch...This, I am not so sure about it! Sigh...

The only excited member of our little family is the Corgi! As for me, I made sure hot cocoa is ready and a nice stack of books awaits by my rocking chair!

Today is the 100th anniversary of Captain R. Falcon Scott's, leader of the Terra Nova Expedition, arrival at the South Pole. Along with two other men, he survived cruel weather conditions and deprivation during those long months only to find out Amundsen had beaten him to the goal by 33 days.

The ill-fated trio never returned. Captain Scott and his team left us however with notes and letters and incredible photos! His last entry read:

“Every day we have been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent it remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more. R. Scott. For God's sake look after our people.”

One of those letters will be displayed in Cambridge today...I only wish I could see that!

My review:

When Saturday night comes, grab a bowl of popcorn, gather everyone in the family room and put this movie on! This is a winner!

Based on 'The legend of Mickey Tussler', a novel written by talented Frank Nappi, 'A mile in his shoes' is the story of a remarkable young Ohio farmer with a sensational pitcher's arm.

Mickey is undeniably warm and caring and has a remarkable memory for numbers. He also suffers from Asperger's syndrome, a form of Autism.

Wonderful quotes from the movie:

'You'll never know what's possible until your learn to believe in yourself' and 'Sometimes miracles happen when you least expect them and late in the game'.

What better messages to pass on to our children?

A presentation of Thomas Kinkade the Painter of Light, this movie is directed by William Dear (remember Harry and the Hendersons?) and stars actor Dean Cain with the million dollar smile as the friendly Coach with a past.

Luke Schroder also makes his acting debut and gives us a heartfelt performance you will find endearing! Luke's tasteful rendition of 'Mickey' reminds us of his famous Dad, Rick Schroder. A quick look at the Special Features explains also Luke's respect for the character he plays in the movie and how he came to study the part. A young actor with much promise!

This is is a movie the whole family can appreciate and worth 5 stars!

Neighboring On The Air or Radio Homemakers...

A few years ago my family and I purchased a little piece of Heaven, 20 acres and a small cabin in the Mountains...and this city girl discovered a whole new world!

Endless vistas, fresh air, wildlife, no water?? We decided to remedy that part immediately albeit it took 306 ft of hard drilling through glaciers! We now have a solar powered well and I am glad to say the money was worth it!

The wildlife part took a little getting used to...Elks, mountain lions, brown eagles (nasty), coyotes and wolves lives in these parts and prints and scats are evident, particularly in the wee morning! We quickly realized a stroll through 'our' woods was not to be undertaken lightly unlike a leisurely stroll in the downtown park!

Realization came fast when a black bear visited us one evening... We both spotted each other and had pretty much the same reaction:...AAAAAHHHH!!! before he/she scampered into the woods and I quickly locked the cabin door!

I rather enjoy the antics of tiny red squirrels, chirping chipmunks and comical prairie dogs on our land and I am still hoping to get a glimpse of that elusive elk (he/she tantalizes me with a few hair hanging on the siding!)

We have a generator of course, a wood burning cook stove and use oil lamps just like the Amish. It is cozy and we love the peace and quiet (generally disrupted only when some lone coyote howls in the night or some idiot discharges his shotgun...).

Without telly or computer however we rely on a small transistor for outside world news and entertainment. This means the local radio station broadcasting from the valley, including an oldie program which brings back many memories, an heavenly half hour of Songs of Praises on Sunday mornings and a Saturday Party Line...

I had never heard of such a program but it sounded very much part of the West so I often put it on for a glimpse of life in these lonely parts!

It took a moment for me to realize the man who stated he and 'Bertha' needed to part from each other after 3 years meant Bertha the sow, was now for sale...

What must it feel to live miles away from every amenities (21 miles down a steep mountain to reach the only general store/gas station) and another 6.5 miles to the nearest town? Going off once or twice a month for supplies? (wait... we do the very same on the island?!)

For decades 'neighboring on the air' by Radio Homemakers was the answer! I first heard of this program through 'The legacy of Home' thanks to Mrs. White. Take a moment to check out the video she uploaded and you will quickly understand what I mean!

In 'Neighboring on the Air' you will discover the original blogging system! Today Bloggers across the globe uses the Internet to reach out readers and share their thoughts and ideas, crafts, good times and bad ones, often sprinkled with much wit and a good dose of wisdom!

Radio homemakers such as Evelyn Birkby provided practical information designed to help day to day activities, offering companionship and inspiration on all sorts of areas such as recipes, biographies and household advices and best of all, still applicable today!

For a few examples, Page 66 yields a great Hand lotion:

1/2 pint glycerin

1/2 pint bay rum

1 pint rosewater or rainwater

1/2 ounce tincture of Benzoin

1 large TBSP quince seed (soak in rosewater 24 hours and strain)

To make: Mix all together and use each time after having hands in water!

My review:

Two things called my attention to Suzanne Woods Fisher latest novel. The first was 'A family, a farm, a heart...All in need of repairs' and the second, 'The Keeper' is a keeper!

I wholeheartily agree and yes, (once again) I found a little spot on my shelves...No surprise there, Susanne's books are worth tucking in here and there (maybe build a new shelf?).

There is something special in this author's books and I always enjoy a little guessing work at the beginning of each of her novels just to see later on if I have guessed correctly. I like to just snuggle up in a chair, a cuppa nearby and discover a whole new story about the Amish. You might say reading her latest novel is a little like meeting an old friend or a good neighbour at the kitchen table!

'The Keeper' is a journey of discovery of young love amidst a world that somehow always fascinates of course, one we never seem to grow tired of. It is also about choices! Each character is certain to pull at the strings of your heart as we have learned to expect from Suzanne's books!

In this first book of 'The Stoney Ridge Seasons' it is a toss to whom of these characters's antics you will laugh the hardest and love the most! My favourite is M.K.!

Like a beautiful quilt, stich by stich, 'The Keeper' reveals a heartwarming story rich in lively colours, humour and a good dose of wisdom. Suzanne's exquisite rendering of finding the courage to say hello and goodbye when the time comes ultimately makes this yet again, a beautiful story of love, hope and faith in the Lord's guiding hands. It will make you cry and laugh and will create a few sighs in between...

This is one story you will have a hard time to put down and worth 5 stars!

Getting In The Swing Of Things...Knit One, Purl One...

The week started in a lovely way...I WON! Yes, it might seem silly to some, but I was elated and found myself dancing around the room with the Corgi...

What can I say? It just feels good to be 'The' One!

So what exactly did I win? Well, check out Mademoiselle Poirot's exquisite site and you will see for yourself!

I am so looking forward to find my gift in the post that I just might beat ex-RAF hubby to the mainland!

I then checked out a comment on the site and discovered 'London Catwalk' 'Glamourous photos'...

Oh dear, stunning comes to mind! Photo # 6 with the lovely red pardessus with its bow -instead of martingale- and basket just called to me!

And I think after reading Patti's post on 'Pretty versus Hot' I am (almost) ready to throw off tweeds, brogues and trousers...

Time for a little beauty in my life...A string of pearls perhaps? A new pair of pumps? Purse? (a weakness!) Scarf? (my favourite!)...

I also found myself humming (if I burst in a song the Corgi runs away!) a lot the last few days...Spring fever?

Maybe, as I have gone over the house with the dust rag and washed china, nick knacks and moved potted plants here and there for more light...

My favourite Charity shoppe also yielded a lovely set of Filandia plates, an inspiration emanating from my constant browsing at Madelief's...

And yes, I threw the windows open (at least in the bedroom!)...for a bit of fresh air...

It's the New Year and it is time to get in the swing of things...

I found myself staring four times in the last week at knitting posts... A sign? Inspiration?

O course visiting Dance With Wool is always an inspiration! I think that little bunny is perfect for Madeline!

I have not knitted in a long time...A year in fact!

Epiphany or Twelfth Night musings

'Epiphany, or "Twelfth Night" as it is traditionally known in England, was marked by celebrations that brought an end to the twelve day Christmas period, and was the last chance for merry-making before returning to work. The Yule log, lit on Christmas day, remained burning until Twelfth Night in order to bring good fortune to the house for the coming year. Its charred remains were kept, both to kindle the next year's Yule log, as well as to protect the house from fire and lightning. The period leading up to Twelfth Night was celebrated in medieval times as the "festival of fools," during which a "lord of misrule" presided over mischief and wild antics. Twelfth Night itself was a traditional day for plays or "mummings," and it is thought that Shakespeare's play took its name from the fact that it was first performed as part of Twelfth Night celebrations about 1601'.

'Twelfth night' happens to be also my favourite amongst Shakespeare's plays and perhaps that is why I associate it with Epiphany or 'Theophany'. As for many 'La Fete des Rois' was a traditional celebration during my childhood and one I made sure to pass on to my children as well.

This 2000 years old Roman Catholic festival commemorates the arrival of the three Kings with gifts for Baby Jesus. Gaspar (Master-of-Treasure), Balthazar (King) and Melchior (Protect-the-King) came from three different continents with three offerings: Gold, Frankincense and myrrh.

Fires are still lit this night in many villages, a reminder of that special night in Bethlehem when as the legend tells us, fires burned high and bright thus hiding the Star from King Herod's spies.

The traditional galette or King's cake holds a bean. It is still a family tradition for many to gather together to cut the galette...Whomever finds the bean is crowned King of the Day and...chooses a Queen.

And now you know what we will be doing tonight...

My review:

For Book #2 of 'The End Series' to be another success the authors needed to keep building up the excitement and once again readers will not be disappointed! This time Joshua Jordan travels to Israel with his daughter only to be captured himself by terrorists.

Tim Lahaye and Craig Parshall have honed their writing skills and together they make a formidable team as already witnessed in Book #1 (see review here)!

Using Bible prophecies involving both Israel and the US future, the authors uses this latest bestseller to remind readers of the possible outcome of our world's imminent issues. It is each individual responsibility to recognize these dangers but too often we prefer to ignore the signs. Lahaye and co-author Parshall skillfully use their perfect blend of reality and fiction as a true awakening for many.

A thrilling read, one you will have a hard time to put down I guarantee!

Thunder of Heaven offers a gripping plot (if anything even better than the first book) including corruption and deception at the highest level!

Ultimately like Johsua Jordan, each of us must find in life a balance betwixt the forces of good and evil! Faith is the only option!

5 Stars of course and I am looking forward to # 3 in the series!

Charlotte's Angel, Inspirational Australian Fiction review

My review:

The Early Colonial days of New South Wales is the setting for Carol Preston's latest novel. As such I was not disappointed as the author used interesting historical facts for its background. I love history and it is that particular subject which often attracts my attention when I select a book be it for reviewing or just entertainment.

In this case however I think I should have read first 'Mary's Guardian' to get a feel of the story. It seemed 'Charlotte's Angel', book # 2 in the saga , was missing something in the beginning, and I for one, felt some confusion as to whose story this truly was: Charlotte's, Eliza (her mother) or the Douglass family.

After reading material such as 'The Fatal Shore' I expected the stark background which is particular to the Australian continent. I also anticipate some colour in Carol Preston's fictional work but instead the pages revealed a very bland setting. There are no description of the extensive fauna or flora, and we are left to imagine if individual characters are either tall, short, fat, blond or black.

In one instance the early disappearance of one character never offers a closure, leaving the reader to imagine he/she missed something and going back at the beginning yields only frustration.

I also felt the inspirational part of the story lacked a few sparks!

In the end, you might finish the book and decide all ends well but personally I hoped for more. There seems to be a vast amount of Inspirational Australian fiction and non fiction available on the market and looking at the catalogue in front of me, I hope to read some of these shortly.

'Charlotte's Angel' is just a nice story aimed perhaps at the Young Adult audience with little to recommend to other readers.

I give it 3 stars.

My review:

Tim Lahaye is a familiar name in most Christian households. After all his Left behind series alone counts many fans throughout the world. We are human and we tend to wonder about 'what if' and 'after'.

In his novels, Tim Lahaye leads us to imagine a very plausible future, linking his plots to many current events. What makes it so successful, is the author's knack for realism! No one who reads Tim Lahaye's novels can deny you feel a chill when the eventual plot is uncovered. He does it well!

With fascinating characters and fast paced action, this first novel of the End Times series written by Tim Lahaye and co-author Craig Parshall is so believable it reads more like an actual news report. National security, Global alignment and political intrigues are woven in a scary scenario all too probable with the present world's unrest.

Together Craig Parshall and Tim Lahaye offers us an excellent debut to a new series complete with end times prophecies and the threat of another world war. You will find yourself engrossed in the plot from the first chapter and this is another book hard to put down!

Anyone who does not experience some tremulation at the sheer uncanny plot obviously missed the point!

This is an excellent novel inspired by faith to be shared by any Christian!

I can only give this one 5 stars!

Note to readers: Negative reviews of such novels are always surprising to me...The label 'Christian fiction' is after all very clear!

Wonderland Creek, Book review

My review:

'I was perfectly content with my life - that is, until the pages of my story were ripped out before I had a chance to live happily ever after.'

An excellent debut I felt as I was really looking for something relaxing to read and I have always believed in faery tales! This was just the right novel for a cold, blustery and rainy evening!

'Three days later, when Lillie was sure that Mack would live, she started planning his funeral.' is only the beginning of Chapter 8...I forgot the time and just kept on reading!

Lynn Austin once again delivers an enticing story which is sure to have you alternate betwixt laughing bouts and tears!

There is something almost magical in Lynn Austin's writing and I have yet to read anything I did not like by this author so I will heartily recommend her novels.

Just short of spellbinding, each page of her Christian novels allows you to step in a different time frame and her characters beckons readers to immerse themselves in her stories.

In her latest book we discover a little coal mining town in Kentucky during the Great Depression, a young librarian, a one hundred and one year old woman once a plantation slave, a writer and to top all this, there is a mysterious buried treasure...

In Wonderland Creek we discover the harsh lives led by the proud mountain people of Kentucky whom with much determination survived the Great Depression. You find yourself almost envious of the simple lifestyle, the traditions, the intricate families connections and above all, the beauty of the surroundings!

As is customary with Lynn Austin's novels, you will find a marvelous balance betwixt history lessons, rich settings, amazing and often gripping characters and of course a good dose of Christian wisdom.

When all is said and done, this is one author's writings worth every 5 stars given!
