Long on energy yet short on the melodic nuance that spices the new disc, "Ignore the Ignorant," The Cribs work a limited playing field that reinforces the power of working class British rock.

The cues have their roots in The Beatles, Ramones and Buzzcocks, and rather than ask Marr to enhance The Cribs' sound with elements from The Smiths or Modest Mouse, the other band he pinch hit for, he's there to tap into history. The Cribs--three bothers from Wakefield--were great at pounding the audience over the head with fat chords, Phil Spector beats and group chants. That's still their bread and butter, but over time it's likely they'll find benefits in assimilating the textures and tempos of "Ignore the Ignorant" into their live show.

"Last Year's Snow" is the new album's the tender centerpiece, "Cheat on Me" is the mid-tempo single and "We Share the Same Skies" is the closest The Cribs come to The Smiths' territory. Monday at the Roxy, played back-to-back-to-back, "Snow's" tempo was accelerated, "Cheat" was indifferent and "Same Skies" was the night's most full-bodied, exhilarating rocker.

Marr's role--and it might well evolve when they return to the US for a full tour early next year--is to bulk up the heavy parts and slide in multiple textures when the music is less in-your-face. His purpose is twofold: help the band evolve by enhancing the brawn and adding brains. It's most evident on the pungent "Hari Kari," a standout track on the new album and at the 80-minute show. A rare Cribs tune in which each instrumentalist is required to go in a distinct direction, then regroup for a moment of catharsis, the tune is a musical and lyrical bed of nails.

Following the powerful opener "We Were Aborted," The Cribs stuck with the fast and furious, going a full 10 songs before easing the pace on the ballad "What About Me" from their 2004 debut album. The quartet set-up has made guitarist Ryan Jarman the frontman, with bassist Gary Jarman positioned to his left. They still alternate on vocals--Ryan's dour and deep-hued voice providing the grounding, Gary's higher pitch and inclination to yelp proving a Kurt Cobain alternative to Ryan's Noel Gallagher. They have always had an indie swagger and, with a legend beside them and the power drumming of Ross Jarman behind them, The Cribs are displaying a musical maturation on record that is just a few steps away in the live show.

It's been a long couple of years for Wolfmother [ tickets ] singer Andrew Stockdale. The Australian found himself without a band in August 2008, when rhythm section and fellow countrymen--Chris Ross (bass/keyboards) and Myles Heskett (drums) packed up and left due to "irreconcilable personal and musical differences."

Now, after a brief hiatus, Stockdale has returned with new musicians--bassist/keyboardist Ian Peres, guitarist Aidan Nemeth and drummer Dave Atkins--and a new album dubbed "Cosmic Egg."

"It's an evolution, I guess, of all the sounds of the first record," Stockdale told LiveDaily while speaking about the new set. "Sometimes it's heavier, sometimes it's lighter, or more kind of stuff like that. I think it's a more magnified version. Where it's heavier, it's heavier. Where it's lighter, it's lighter."

Stockdale explained he didn't feel the dreaded sophomore slump while working on the album, which is a follow-up to Wolfmother's 2005 self-titled Grammy-winning debut.

"What can you do?" Stockdale asked rhetorically. "You make music that you like and the rest is a mystery. You can't really concern yourself too much with sophomore slump. I just think of it as Chapter 2, Chapter 3. The bands that I like, I pretty much like everything they do. When I like a band, I go on a journey with them. I don't know how that translates to the greater population.

"But I did feel pressure to make it good, and live up to your own standards, and you hope you can sit there in the studio and press 'play' and hear it through the speakers and be happy with it and really enjoy it," he continued. "If someone comes in the studio and you play it and you hope they're not looking at the walls waiting to get out of there--that's the pressure that you have."

Stockdale, who keeps his Grammy Award in his recording studio, worked on the album with Alan Moulder, whose production credits include Depeche Mode, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Nine Inch Nails, among others. Stockdale described Moulder as having a "great temperament" and being a "master at making you sound good." Working with the Brit was an intense learning experience.

"He's an absolute pleasure," Stockdale said. "He made it sound pretty dramatic and full of energy. It just sounds like there's a lot of excitement. He's creative.

He captured the performances."

Besides his own music, Stockdale recently recorded a song with Slash for the axeman's forthcoming solo record. According to published reports, Stockdale is in good company, as Dave Grohl, Iggy Pop, Nick Oliveri, Ronnie Wood, Flea, Jason Bonham, Fergie, Duff McKagan and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine are also featured on the collection.

"It was incredible," Stockdale said of collaborating with Slash. Earlier this year, while touring in support of his latest album, "Time The Conqueror," Jackson Browne [ tickets ] showcased a fairly diverse selection from his extensive library, and made it clear after the first few request shout-outs that he was running his band on a tight set list--and he was stickin' to it.

But the accommodating side of his apparent split personality came out to play for a sold-out solo performance Friday (11/6) at Kingston's Ulter Performing Arts Center. On this evening, as was the case during several solo shows going back to 2007, Browne jumped around more animatedly than a whack-a-mole, seemingly driven by requests yelled out in between songs.

On occasion, he would be seated at the piano, already tinkling the introductory notes of a song, when a request shouted from the crowd would cause him to pop up and grab a guitar in order to oblige. These solo sets almost always include a core inventory of hits sprinkled throughout a two-and-a-half hour showcase, but once in awhile Browne will venture off into the depths of his collection with unpredictable spontaneity.

This happened twice during the UPAC show.

The first hilarious surprise came about a half-dozen numbers in, when someone roared for "Free Bird." Apparently, Browne had heard this once too often and decided, if you can't beat them, join them. With that, he launched into a full-length cover of the seminal Lynyrd Skynyrd ballad, complete with a spot-on slide solo courtesy of his guitar tech, who wailed the familiar hook from the wings on a brilliant white Stratocaster.

The second equally amusing incident came when Browne basically stopped performing "Alive in The World" mid-song because he forgot the lyrics, and called for someone off stage to print them up. While that was being done, Browne ventured back to his debut for "Looking Into You." Then the aforementioned lyrics were delivered, and his do-over commenced--with a few momentary stops as he squinted at his cheat sheet.

Browne didn't dwell too long on "Time the Conqueror," but the intermittent samples from that project stood strong beside his most popular and endearing creations. "Live Nude Cabaret" and "Going Down to Cuba" were particularly well received and interesting to hear in contrast to the arrangements of those numbers with the full band where instrumentation overshadowed the lyrical content by default.

This is one of the reasons why attending at least one of these solo Jackson Browne shows is an absolute must for fans. While the full-band shows provide the full instrumentation they are used to hearing on the record, these solo shows shift the burden to Browne's lyrics and vocal delivery.

On his first switch from guitar to keyboard, Browne honored a request for "Sky Blue and Black," plaintively sketching the story out on a stark and nearly empty background of just a few piano chords. Selections like this gave the audience an opportunity to really hang on every word, as did his renditions of "For A Dancer," "Late for the Sky" and the incredible "Sleep's Dark & Silent Gate."

As counterpoint to the more sad or introspective piano tunes, Browne chose from among the 16 various guitars he brought along for just such an occasion, pulling out a plucky two-step beat for "These Days," and a sizzling politically-charged "For America" to close out his first set.

He also got the crowd on its feet a little later with up-tempo takes of "Running on Empty," "Doctor My Eyes" and "Somebody's Baby." And, before launching into "Rock Me On The Water," Browne took a few moments to rally the audience around his latest cause: reducing the use of plastic beverage containers.

The artist said he typically avoids hawking product during his shows, but asked folks to consider purchasing a stainless steel water bottle from the concession stand to help save the environment. According to Browne, only about 15 percent of all the world's plastic water bottles are recycled, and most of those are eventually shipped to China and incinerated, causing equally harmful atmospheric pollution.

The rest, he said, end up in landfills where they leech chemicals that, ironically, poison the natural water tables below. He also drew attention to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a vortex of plastic bottles and similar junk that has turned a piece of the Pacific twice the size of Texas into a murky goo that is poisoning fish and upsetting the entire world's ecosystem.

Despite measured doses of political activism that occasionally overshadow his musical contributions, the show wrapped with what has become a standard show closer and affirmation for Browne: a cover of "Little Steven" Van Zandt's "I Am A Patriot."

Browne continues the current leg of his solo tour through Dec. 7 before he breaks to prep for a package of co-headlining shows with Sheryl Crow in Japan in March 2010.
