So I played him this other track and Paul ... went to the mike and he just invented that part where he follows on my vocal. That was all Paul McCartney, and there could be nothing better.... He just makes it bigger and he makes it fuller," Starr said.

The album, which will be released on Jan. 12, also features special guest performances by Joe Walsh, Dave Stewart, Benmont Tench, Don Was, Joss Stone, Ben Harper, Glen Ballard and many others.

Starr said his decision to produce his own record was "a confidence thing."

"I was the least involved in the production of the Beatles records," he said. "And then with my solo records, I worked with some other great producers.... Then suddenly, it's another point in your life, and you say, 'I'm going [to] do this now.' So I'll be producing anything I make from now on.... And 'Y Not' is really another way of me saying, 'Yes, I can.'"

Starr was thrilled when his son, Zak, gave the album a good review. "Zak was so great," Starr said in a statement. "He said, 'Dad, it's great. This rocks! You should have been doing this forever.' It's nice coming from your boy, especially since he's a really good drummer."

More than 30 bands on this year's tour participated in building a custom painted drum to be auctioned for the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association, which is made up of families and professionals working together to promote and fund research, provide education, and offer support to enhance the quality of life of those affected by the syndrome.

In addition to the previously mentioned acts, participating bands included Anti Flag, Cute Is What We Aim For, Saosin, The A.K.A.s, The White Tie Affair, Senses Fail, Underoath, NOFX, POS, ArturoVega/Ramones and Therefore I Am, among others.

Perry is not about to fade away just yet, however; instead he's continuing what he started in 1979 with the launch of The Joe Perry Project [ tickets ]. He's now on the road with the group to support his latest solo album, "Have Guitar, Will Travel."

Them Crooked Vultures [ tickets ]' self-titled debut answers that question with a resounding: mostly! The album gets off to an unfortunately laggard start, first with the bland refried boogie "Nobody Loves Me & Neither Do I," followed by the generic rave-up "Mind Eraser, No Chaser," both of which sound like they could have fallen off an April Wine disc from 1981.

The barbed "New Fang" helps the album turn a corner into something approaching sunlight with Grohl's mini-Bonham drumwork carrying the tune forward to align with Jones' smart basslines and Homme's snappy vocals and guitar, while the following "Dead End Friends" sounds like it could have been plucked off any of the last several QOTSA albums, a trend that continues throughout the remainder of the set.

"Scumbag Blues" drives the point home with a hammering chorus and one of Homme's two signature vocal styles, a keening, high-pitched wail (the other one being a mid-register moan with more than a hint of menace). The interplay between the three veteran musical masterminds is on full display here, with most of the latter half of the cut devoted to a squared-off jam session ending with concise guitar work from either Homme or Queens of the Stone Age's Alain Johannes, who appeared on the album and has also been accompanying the band on tour.

While Homme dominates the proceedings with his vocals and trademark desert-punk touches, and Grohl reminds everyone what the world has been missing with his post-Nirvana abandonment of the drum kit in favor of the frontman position, Jones' roles is less defined, sliding back and forth between his still-keen ability to hammer down into a deep bass groove and subtle mastery of the keyboards, always an underrated weapon in the Zeppelin arsenal.

A stronger Zep influence invades halfway through the album's fifth cut, "Elephants," when the song takes a sudden turn into "Kashmir" territory before returning to Homme's comfort zone, a lockstep QOTSA-style dirge that dominates most of the six-minute-plus tune. The band later returns to Jones' spiritual homeland on "Reptiles," which merges "Southbound Suarez" and "Carouselambra" from 1979's "In Through the Out Door" to strong effect.

Further along, "Warsaw or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up" ventures into Doors territory, oddly enough, while "Caligulove" allows Jones more opportunities to vamp with the Hammond organ. Heaviness abounds on "Gunman," then comes to full fruit on the album's closer, "Spinning in Daffodils," a relentless but somewhat pointless eight minutes of groove-and-shuffle featuring almost two minutes of fadeout.

"Them Crooked Vultures" won't elbow "Nevermind" or "Physical Graffiti" out of most people's record collections, but it both earns and rewards repeated listens, and proves that supergroups in the modern era aren't necessarily doomed to disappoint.

The accident reportedly occurred at about 8:15 a.m. on southbound Interstate 85 in Dinwidde County. The name of the driver hasn't been released.

On the road, the band will continue to perform its recently released seventh studio album, "Hello Hurricane," in its entirety. The album--the group's first on its own lowercase people records--hit stores Nov. 10.

"Hello Hurricane" follows Switchfoot's 2006 release, "Oh! Gravity," which peaked at No. 18 on The Billboard 200. The album's lead single, "Mess of Me," peaked at No. 27 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in September.

The band worked with a number of high-profile producers on the set, including hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem).

"That was incredible to have someone like that to bring a new synergy," drummer Chad Butler told Canada's National Post this summer. "He comes from a completely different background. Recording with him was a challenge for us--his approach was really refreshing. Someone who's got such a rhythmic sensibility.


"I think it's going to be really surprising when people hear this," he added.

Switchfoot has also signed onto Dave Matthews Band's So Much to Save program, which is designed to promote and educate fans about recycling, saving energy and reducing their environmental impact. Fans who pledge to make a change can download the "So Much to Save" album, which includes Switchfoot's "Dirty Second Hands."

The trek, which also features Reba McEntire, kicks off Jan. 26 in Baltimore. Dates are currently set through an April 10 performance in Des Moines, IA, with stops in 18 cities along the way. The itinerary is detailed below.

"We're talking classic country from the source," said Womack in a press statement. "I can't imagine a better tour to be on than George Strait and Reba McEntire--and now I'm not imagining!"

"I'm trying to figure out what to wear," she added, "cause you can't out-starch George and you sure can't out-spangle Reba!"

"Twang," Strait's 26th studio album, surfaced in August and took over the No. 1 spots on The Billboard 200 and the Top Country Albums chart. The new collection follows last year's platinum-selling "Troubadour," which earned a Grammy for Best Country Album earlier this year.

McEntire, meanwhile, will hit the road in support of "Keep On Loving You," her most recent studio effort, which also hit shelves in August. The album marked her first solo set to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.

In October, Womack released a new single, "There Is a God," the lead-off to the singer's still-untitled and forthcoming seventh studio album, which is scheduled for release early next year. The track debuted at No. 60 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

"Number One," the new album's lead single featuring Keri Hilson, recently marked Kelly's 27th career Top 10 appearance on Billboard's Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The album's second single, "Religious," debuted at No. 60 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

In June, R. Kelly was cleared of all 14 counts filed against him for allegedly making and starring in a sex video with an underage girl. The charges were brought against the 41-year-old singer six years ago.

After a nearly two-month hiatus, the iconic rockers will climb aboard the tour bus for a 25-city trek across North America that begins with a Feb. 2 concert in Vancouver and currently concludes March 20 in Chicago. "Black Gives Way to Blue," the band's fourth full-length studio set, hit shelves in September and debuted at No. 5 on The Billboard 200. Produced by Nick Raskulinecz in Foo Fighter Dave Grohl's private Studio 606 in Northridge, CA, and Henson Studios in Hollywood, the album is AIC's first new studio set in 14 years. The album also marks the debut of William DuVall, who shares vocal duties with longtime guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. The group's original singer, Layne Staley, died of a drug overdose in 2002. The group's final set with Staley, a 1995 self-titled collection, peaked atop The Billboard 200 and sold more than two million copies.

Alice in Chains worked alongside legendary performer Elton John for the title track to the most recent release, which is a tribute to Staley.

"He took suggestions from us like the absolute master musician that he is," DuVall said in a recent interview with LiveDaily. "After trying it a bunch of different ways, he hit on the approach you hear on the album. I think it's beautiful and a perfect fitting to the song."

Earlier this month, the band unleashed the "Black Gives Way to Blue" application for the iPhone, which features full songs from the album, music videos, photos and more, according to a press release.
