Orion on the beach.....

Ok, I admit it, I havent been doing much of anything other then work and hanging with my new best friend "Orion" We have been going to the beach everyday, and I thought it was time to take some more photos of my homie....
He is enormously intelligent and learns fast. I am trying to teach him to trust, love and respect me. The trust and love is already there... Now its time for the respect! I am in no hurry. I work with him patiently while trying to remain "calm and assertive" :)
One thing is for sure, he is strong willed and physically able to leap over tall buildings in a single bound. Its so much fun trying to keep up with him!Ah, the Sun beaming its rays deep into the heavens. A serenade to the stars as viewed from Baldwin beach with Orion. Im preparing for an intense binge of music, videos and photo blog posts and podcasts... Thanx to everyone who is so responsive and thoughtful with their comments! ALOHA

Kona Storm... With deep thoughts

Kona storm hits Maui...

Winds reaching 80mph+ Maui gets hammered by a huge wind storm. Warm wind and huge waves pound Maui with unbridled ferocity. Peoples roofs were completely torn off and I myself was picked up off my feet by the wind. No joke!

Shooting photos was next to impossible with the gusts of wind almost blowing me into the ocean. This is the only shot I got that is some what clear. With this incredible storm came the full moon. As a Cancer, sensitive to the moon, I felt some deep, intense feelings last night. As the sound of the howling wind blew the clouds around, the moon peeked out at me over and over. I heard some pondering questions come from within that made me ask why I am the way I am.

Im the kinda guy that is passionate about many things, but that passion is fueled by friends and other people sharing my passions. While this is fantastic most the time, I find myself feeling lost when I'm alone. I pride myself in being a very independent fellow. I have ventured out into the unknown alone so many times, and returned with rewards of satisfaction and accomplishment. Yet, my soul loves to interact with people and share these moments... A fantastic example of this is surfing. I love it so much, but I have a hard time going out by myself. The countless number of times I have been out alone, have been lessons in life. Wonderful experiences that stick out in my mind as contemplative meditations and physical workouts. Through the years, I continually search for a new friend to join me in this experience. While many have joined me, it never lasts. Girlfriends have gotten very upset with me over the "pressure" I put on them to go surfing with me. Occasionally I meet someone who wants to surf everyday, and I try and go with them, but these guys are usually short boarders that share a different passion for it then I do. So I ride alone.... Well this is the template for the dynamics in all my passions. Music/Photography/Video/Art.

I constantly search for other people to share my passions. Unfortunately, my passions suffer because of this. My longing to collaborate, share and grow with another person in a discipline is stronger then the passion itself at times. Looking closely at myself right now, I am going to stop doing this. I ask my self why am I like this? Do I want someone to do my work for me? Do I want someone to share blame with when there is fault? Am I that insecure about my passions that I need someone else to do them with me to make them happen? NO NO NO -

I think its from a bunch of strong friendships I once had that where so creative and stimulating, im constantly looking to recreate this situation again. Truth is, most of my collaboration's have ended poorly, and left both parties feeling empty... So the answer is obvious.. I must do my work alone, dig deep into my well, and others will respond accordingly. My solitude can give way to genius if I let it happen. I guess I just love to laugh, love and work with others, musically, artistically and philosophically. My problem is, if others don't share my passions and interests I can be stagnant, and start to look for different people who are into what Im into. I suppose we are all like this, but it doesnt make for prolific and beneficial art making... All the great art in the world is usually the brainchild of one person who spent hours/days/weeks/months/years/ alone working to create their passion. Do I need someone to verify my passions? Do I need someone else to make my passions realities? Do I need acknowledgment of an idea before I can manifest it? While my actions declare YES for all these questions... My higher self realizes the answer is NO and I must work harder on my internal power. We all think we need people to do things, but all we need is to believe in ourself.

Maui - An Island Landfill

Maui Maui Maui - Well someone has to bring a little attention to this situation. Maui has a problem, Junked Cars. The photo above is from a sacred spot. Seems like the last couple years have just been absolutely criminal. If your car dies on you, you must pay to have it scraped/junked. Well either people cant afford it or don't care to pay, and they leave their cars just about anywhere. It was a real eye sore so they cracked down on the offenders and towed many of the cars away. Well, looks like the solution has been to dump the cars on rural cliff sides now. And it seems like its just getting worse and worse. Here are a few shots from one of my all time favorite places on Maui. "The Birthing Pools" Now this place is littered with junked cars.....

Im positive the Maui association for tourism would hate for anyone to see this, but the truth is, corruption is leading Maui into an era of industrialization and third world type infrastructure management. Its dumbfounding how long it takes for simple things like a road to get fixed or a car to get towed away. Meanwhile multi million dollar houses are being built literally around these problems.

In 6 short years that I have lived here, I am watching the most pristine place in the world quickly become reminiscent to the lower east side in NYC where I moved here from. There is no doubt in my mind that if the incredibly rich people who have their vacation houses here would care a little more and use some of there vast wealth to actually help this island more, there would be a swift change for the better. People Like Oprah, Willie Nelson, Santana, Woody Harrelson. I very rarely hear about these people doing something extraordinary for Maui that doesn't involve helping themselves too in some way.... Who else is going to rise up and try to help this place if not Maui's wealthy?

In conclusion, pull off into any cliffside, oceanside grotto here in Maui, and you will be shocked at the amount of crap dumped right into the gulches, oceans and bays. From stoves, cars, and refrigerators, to paint, chemicals, and dead animals. Is this the Maui we want? Is this the place people are expecting to see when they arrive? Only we can change it... Send this blog entry to someone who needs to know.... ALOHA - MAUI NO KA OI

WARNING POLITICAL RANT - Its really intense to see what it takes to make this white bleached sugar we all eat all day every day! Here is a shot of the sugarcane mill hard at work at night. Mauis beauty is only rivaled by its incredible harsh sugar and pineapple industry. Organic is a bad word to these people. They have been destroying land and stealing water for decades on this island. With no end in site, Maui produces more sugar then they can sell. It sits pilled up in fields and in warehouses, never to be used or sold. Meanwhile they went ahead and burned it anyway, to make it easier to break down. While its true that the miles of green sugarcane is prettier then houses. The techniques used in growing, harvesting, and processing the sugar are downright primitive and medieval. What is even worse, is the political corruption that surrounds this "agricultural" non profit venture. Government keeps this thing going and without that money its purely a money losing venture and is literally ruining this ancient and incredible island. When you see just how much water and land is being used for this ridiculous scheme, you too would be upset. Not to mention the horrid stench of the processing, and the left over plastics that get burned during harvest. All this incredible toxic stuff goes right into the soil, and into the ocean. Maui cane and pineapple have absolutely NO regard for Hawaiis pristine environment. We need a new solution to end this now standardized island "agricultural" corruption!!

Secret Spot

One thing I love about Maui. You can go up into the mountains and find amazing secret spots. This is a water tunnel carved into a mountain, In the tunnel, a secret room. Here is a little photo of this special spot. No one is ever around, its totally quiet and serene, no bugs, and the breeze that is forced through the tunnel is downright spiritual! For the hardcore Maui explorers ONLY!

Aloha... Well today, I find myself wanting more from life... Island life is amazing but as a city kid, I sometimes find myself questioning why Im here. At the same time, Im sure that as soon I get to the city, spend the 60 bucks on the cab into town and then the hundreds of dollars having fun, I will quickly realize all Im missing is the spending frenzy... Although, the intense and amazing talent to be found within the boundaries of the urban jungles is not to be dismissed. What a duality inside I have.... Perhaps a dramatic change is in coming.. I certainly can feel it.

Aloha guys.. I have been completely and totally obsessed with photography lately... I recently bought a new Canon DSLR.. Love it to death. although Im a Nikon man to the core.. I must say Canon has drawn my eye away for a bit. Here is a recent set of photos from the last month. Taken with both my Nikon and new Canon. Maui NO KA OI............
