Warning: Dork-speak ahead:
Though the SM57 is supposedly a pretty standard go-to mic for micing a guitar amp, I've rarely had good results with my SM58 (which ought to be very similar with the windscreen removed). Last night I was just messing around a little and ran a close-mic'd 58 through the preamp on the new behringer mixer and into sonar via the non-preamplified channels of the omni. For that mic on that amp, the preamp on the behringer sounds way better than the omni amp or my little ART tube preamp. Good to know. Then again - maybe it was the french toast...

French Toast with Overdrive...
A quick recording has been added to the m||m site to demonstrate the powers of my new xmas presents (thanks Meg and Dan!!!), which have given me great joy the last few days.

I didn't spend a ton of time tweaking amp sound/mic placement for this, but both pedals have (I think) a lot of potential for recording quality - I'd say more than most of my other lackluster bargain-bin pedals (though I've gotten some good results out of the World's-Shittiest-Wah (TM)). The overdrive may require a bit more careful attention to get along with the amp/mic, but it will add some fullness and warmth that is sometimes missing from my electric parts. The french toast, regardless of amp/mic settings, will allow me to peel the tears off a listener's eyes and coat them with a layer of gooey awesomeness.

Snowing like crazy here in Portland - about 4 inches on the ground so far, which is fairly unusual for this city.

If it's snowing where you are - you should be listening to Sigur Ros and Bon Iver. Both wonderful soundtracks to winter weather. That is all.

It ain't much yet, but beginning soon, this room will gradually become the next Magnetic or Mosaic studio, to remain for at least 4 years or so. Pictures to come as things progress.

Repurposing the journal

I've set up to have certain posts on my journal site appear on my website - sorta a sub-blog, if you will. Obviously, only music related updates are really relevant over there. So, here's a first go at it.
So, since it's supposed to be news: there are currently 4 m| |m tracks in various stages of production, some of them actually close to finished, but I have a feeling it will be a while yet. We're moving to Portland, OR in about 2 weeks, where we'll be renting an apartment temporarily while house shopping. With any luck, we'll find a home where a new, better version of the studio can come to life. More to follow...
