How do you make your decisions? It’s a decision that affects everything in our future, not just how we spend 50 weeks a year, but often the neighborhood in which we choose to live, how much money we’ll get to make, who our friends are going to be. Career planning is often delegated to guidance counselor offices and other resources. And we are limited to choosing from what they have to offer.

Today’s guest Paul Tieger, wrote a book called, Do What You Are, that could be considered the declaration of independence on passive career planning to active career planning, to owning a new career.

It’s designed to help you find a perfect career for you based on your unique personality styling and interests. So how well suited are you for the work you currently do?

In order to have a serious answer for the classic interview question; What do you want to be in five years?

Here are some recommendations for reading from Janet:

The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles, by Steven Pressfield. This is a great book for anyone looking to create something new in their lives. It’s helped me understand and work through the resistance and procrastination that can keep me from moving forward. (Wow! Just noticed it’s out of print now, except for the Kindle version.)

Reflections on the Art of Living: A Joseph Campbell Companion. I’m IN LOVE WITH Joseph Campbell! I’ve always loved myths and legends, and Joseph Campbell teaches us that our hopes and strivings and fears are universal. That we’re all in this together.

Transformational Speaking: If You Want to Change the World, Tell a Better Story, by Gail Larsen. I’ve certainly had my fears about public speaking, but this book has helped me see it differently. Speaking is more a matter of finding your own story and connecting with others by sharing what’s in your heart.

The Velveteen Rabbit, by Margery Williams. This quote from the book says it all: “‘Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you…. You become. It takes a long time.’”

Our greatest opportunities emerge at the intersection of our expertise, purpose and marketplace opportunities. Here are some recommendations for reading from Janet:

The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles, by Steven Pressfield. This is a great book for anyone looking to create something new in their lives. It's helped me understand and work through the resistance and procrastination that can keep me from moving forward. (Wow! Just noticed it's out of print now, except for the Kindle version.)

Reflections on the Art of Living: A Joseph Campbell Companion. I'm IN LOVE WITH Joseph Campbell! I've always loved myths and legends, and Joseph Campbell teaches us that our hopes and strivings and fears are universal. That we're all in this together.

Transformational Speaking: If You Want to Change the World, Tell a Better Story, by Gail Larsen. I've certainly had my fears about public speaking, but this book has helped me see it differently. Speaking is more a matter of finding your own story and connecting with others by sharing what's in your heart.

The Velveteen Rabbit, by Margery Williams. This quote from the book says it all: "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you.... You become. It takes a long time.'"</itunes:summary>

Psychologist Dan Lobovits wasn’t seeking change. He had a satisfying career helping people and communities deal with the emotional impact of trauma. An accomplished marathoner, his Twitter profile describes him as “ loving my work wife, kids, dog, gardening, bread making, beachwalks, and of course, yoga”.

As his parents and their generation encountered the ageing process, his experience and sensitivity helped him re-envision aging as a life stage with its own unique stage of life, rather than as a trauma or a condition of illness. He utilized a unique set of personal resources-a sense of optimism steeped in his admiration for the survivors of trauma, and an entrepreneurial inclination that defines unmet needs as opportunities rather than problems. He shifted his professional practice to create a business called LifeSpan Health Services to develop products and services to promote health and well-being to help our aging population master the art of growing older while healthier, and with grace and wisdom.

And who could have imagined that this mid-career marathoner who has logged 40,000 miles of running would become a poster boy for the best practices of his new organization?

Are you unhappy in your job? So are a majority of employees, even those who feel fortunate to have a job.

Livelihood host Marcy Rosenbaum and guest Zen Master Bon Soeng (Jeff Kitzes) discuss what you can do when you feel you’re living someone else’s plan for your life. Jeff talks about the power of looking inward to find what’s most important to you. When you can’t change the company or the boss, there are still some things you can do to find increased satisfaction at work. Your career, he suggests, can be an expression of who you are, even when your opportunities are stalled or limited.

In today’s interview, Jeff talks about the power of looking inward to find the meaning in the opportunities you encounter.

He enjoys my reaction of horror as he references Donald Rumsfeld comment “You don’t know what you don’t know”; and my chagrin when I acknowledge that insightful remarks can come from unlikely sources. (I take some consolation that Rumsfeld stole the comment from Albert Einstein, who said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge; knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination emraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand”.)

How does someone become a Zen Master?

One experience at a time.

Meet Jeff Kitzes, Guiding Teacher at Empty Gate Zen Center in Berkley California. Also known as Zen Master Bon Soeng (which means “original nature”) he is a meditation teacher, carpenter, licensed psychotherapist, writer and celebrant.

In order to build a successful and satisfying personal career path, we need to be paying attention. What’s going on around me? How am I doing? What do I want?I

This week, our guest is Adam Liss, and he has some very useful skills for figuring out “what’s next”. Adam teaches the skills of mindfulness, which has been defined as paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.

In the tumult of economic and organizational upheaval, it’s hard to pay attention. So many things distract us: worries about money and job security; endlessly expanding to do lists; “what if” analyses as we try to predict, prepare or prevent something in the future. Techniques for mindfulness are more important during changes in our lives than ever before.

Adam, Director of Cape Stress Reduction and Optimal Health in Cape Cod Massachustes, understands that the mind is known to be a factor in stress and stress-related disorders, and that mindfulness meditation exercises can positively effect a range of autonomic physiological processes, lowering blood pressure and reducing overall arousal and emotional reactivity (that “fight or flight” response).

Adam Liss graduated from of Amherst College with a BA degree in Cultural Anthropology. He established a personal meditation practice back in 1975, when “meditation” had a reputation of being “far out” of the mainstream practices of health and wellness.

His center offers workshops and classes in weight management, stress reduction and smoking cessation. He partners with Cape Cod Youth Suicide Prevention Project, teaching mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and an Inner Resilience training class for students, teachers and school-based staff members.

Adam trained at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center’s Stress Reduction Clinic founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn Professor of Medicine Emeritus and founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Take a listen to our in-depth audio interview below and discover how awareness of your breath, and paying attention to to your emotions, can give you a trustworthy compass for navigating your personal career path.

Doing work you love can be dangerous to your work-life balance. When you love what you do, it’s hard to shift gears away from work.

Think of the Prius hybrid electric car: it’s a “charge sustaining” hybrid vehicle. This means that it recharges itself while its operates (using the power from acceleration from the small gasoline engine); it also recovers and stores energy created during coasting and braking.

What would you do if your partner went missing?

Kat Albrecht was an experienced police officer, cross trained in search and rescue procedures. One day her partner—a bloodhound named A.J. —went missing. He wasn’t “just a dog”- with years of training and experience, he was a valuable asset to the search and rescue team. Anyone who has partnered with a working dog, and anyone who has bonded with a pet as a member of their family, knows that the connection between people and their animals is strong.

Using the very same procedures used to find missing people: scent trails, behavior analysis and tracking methods, Kat used another trained search and rescue dog to track and recover A.J. The impact of her experience brought her to an insight: search and rescue procedures could be applied to find lost pets.

As many as 5 million pets go missing in the US each year, according to Veterinarian News. Many animals we see on the street, says Albrecht, aren’t abandoned– they’re lost. Recovering missing pets helps decrease the problem of strays ending up in animal shelters, in addition to reuniting members of a family.

Albrecht launched Missing Pet Partnership to train teams to apply these practices in their own communities. She’s appeared on Animal Planet; written a book called Dog Detective: Train Your Dog To Find Lost Pets.

Kat Albrecht transferred her skills to provide an innovative solution to a problem. She found the intersection between her passion, her skills and the marketplace to create work she loves. You can learn more about her experience, be inspired, and find ideas, resources and insights to help you navigate your personal career path.
