Mikey Bruneau Pipeline charger and North Shore lifeguard win the coveted Steep and Deep Pipeline Challenge along with north shore winning photographer Sean Reilly.

There were hundreds of submissions to go through and it was a hard one to narrow down with so many amazing images coming through with such an amazing El Niño season we’ve had, but their winning image made it to the judges table and out on top with the most points. The image speaks for itself. Good Job Boys!!

Announcing the Fifth Annual Steep And Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge

Registration begins November 9 at Pipeline Gallery in Haleiwa

With El Niño-powered storms just around the corner, we are proud to announce the 2015/2016 Steep And Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge, in memory of Sion Milosky. The contest, now in its fifth year, looks to crown the best surf photograph of the year at Pipeline and Backdoor, still the most competitive lineup in the world. Steep And Deep prides itself in celebrating the photographer and the rider, who both risk their lives tackling the world’s most exciting wave in its rawest moments. Past winners include photographers Zak Noyle, Tony Heff and Sash Fitzsimmons; and surfers Billy Kemper, Nathan Florence, Tyler Newton and Ezra Sitt.

The 2015/2016 Steep And Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge will begin November 1, 2015 and extend through February 10, 2016. Competitors – both photographers and surfers — are encouraged to sign up at the Pipeline Gallery in Haleiwa on November 9 at 6-8p. For those unable to register on this day may register during gallery hours at the Pipeline Gallery, or if out of state, may register by emailing steepandDeepPipeline@gmail.com. Final day to register is January 31, 2016.

Any images taken at Pipeline/Backdoor between November 1, 2015 and February 10, 2016 will be considered. Finalists and winners will be selected by a panel of expert judges and will be announced by February 20 with a wrap up party at the Pipeline Gallery.

So what’s at stake? Besides bragging rights for the year, the winning surfer and photographer will each receive $2,500 from Vans, a custom hardwood framed copy of the winning image, a spread in SURFING Magazine and a custom Will Scovel surfboard to the surfer.

Huge Success at the 4th Annual Live Like Sion Grom Fest on Kaua’i

Family, friends, and loved ones gathered at Prince Kuhio beach on the morning of August 15th, 2015 to celebrate the life of Sion Milosky for the 4th Annual LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST. The GROMFEST is a grassroots event that focuses on family core values and the love Sion had for the ocean. Every year the surfing community, and the island of Kauai show their love by giving back through donations and volunteering their time. This year was no different, as it was the biggest and best one yet, with entries totaling just under 200, 46 of which were in the Keiki push-in diviSION.

The lawn at PKS was covered with blankets and umbrellas as families posted up for a day of fun at the beach. Everywhere you looked you could feel good vibes through the contagious smiles, handshakes, and hugs as everyone celebrated the life of SION MILOSKY. Prizes and raffles were passed out all day from the many generous donations, and nobody went home empty handed. All proceeds went to the LIVE LIKE SION foundation and will be allocated to a few non-profit organizations and further future events through the foundation itself. Everything from event staff, to lunch, shave ice, trophies, prizes and the awards ceremony, were all donations and just a reminder of how much of a impact SION made not only in the water but out of the water as well.

Competition was tough as the waves were 2-3 ft. with light offshore conditions and plenty of contestable rides all day. The level of surfing from all ages was incredible to see and really shows that the future of surfing in Hawaii is very bright. Their were 10 divSIONs in the LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST but the Keiki push-in stole the show again, as people crowded the wall bordering the water and cheered on every single ride the Keiki rode. They were all winners as they all got first place trophies but more importantly most had the times of their lives, and really got to see what LIVE LIKE SION was all about.

After a long action packed day of family fun and competition, the awards ceremony started a little bit down the road. Families gathered at kukui’ula harbor as the sunset over the water, filled in as a backdrop. Dinner was shared and everyone enjoyed and reminisced on the days fun and remembered a great man while doing so. The awards were passed out and every finalist was loaded up with donated prizes from Volcom, Oakley, KonaRed, Poipu Surf, Captain Andy’s and the many other sponsors along with trophies to remember the 4th Annual LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST. Last but not least Will Scovel Surfboards and Lee Surfboard Design, surprised everyone with the GROM OF THE DAY boy/girl awards and gave away a beautiful surfboard each.

This years 4th annual LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST was a huge success and will be hard to top! The GROMFEST would not be possible without the many volunteers, event staff, parents and sponsors. The Milosky Ohana, and the event staff would like to send a sincere Mahalo and Aloha to everyone who made it happen. Without all of you this event would not be possible and we are forever thankful and deeply humbled for your continued support, love, and generosity. I spent a lot of time taking notes from SI and the rest of the crew and to win this event means the world to me! Fourth Annual Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge

Early swells and new format promises for exciting Pipeline season!

We are proud to announce that the fourth annual Steep and Deep Pipeline Photo Challenge is underway! The contest, held in memory of legendary Pipeline surfer and big-wave charger, Sion Milosky, looks to crown the best surf photograph of the year at Pipeline and Backdoor. Past winners include photographers Zak Noyle and Tony Heff and surfers Billy Kemper, Nathan Florence and Tyler Newton. With winter swells already knocking on the North Shore’s door we’re optimistic for the best season of competition yet!

The 2014-2015 Steep and Deep contest will benefit from a couple of key changes in its format:

1) All Steep and Deep entries will be submitted by photographers and surfers by tagging their Pipeline Instagram photos to #steepanddeep2015. Name of surfer and photographer should be noted.

2) 10 finalists will be chosen by a group of photography and Pipeline specialists, then everyone will decide the best photo of the year.

This new approach will make it easier for photographers and surfers to enter their images and for fans to keep track of competition frontrunners as the season unfolds. Stay tuned to #steepanddeep2015 and @steepanddeeppipeline for the season’s best photos from the world’s most spectacular wave!

CONTEST DETAILS

Registration will take place at Sunset Beach Elementary on December 7, 2014 from 6 – 8pm. Online registration will be available from December 7– 31. Email steepanddeeppipeline@gmail.com to register. In person registration encouraged to guarantee comp T-shirt and hat.
Suggested donation of $25 to the Sion Milosky Memorial Fund requested upon registration. Participants will receive a Steep and Deep competitor T-Shirt, hat and decals with their entry.
$25 Entry Fee is accepted via Venmo (an App you can download) pay to username @steepanddeep on the Venmo app and note Steep and Deep 2015 in payment
Photos taken between November 1, 2014 and February 8, 2015 will be eligible for the contest.
Photographers and surfers enter the contest by posting their photos to Instagram and tagging #steepanddeep2015 and or by emailing their images to steepanddeeppipeline@gmail.com
Photographer and surfer must be registered by December 31 to be eligible to win
Prizes. The winning surfer and photographer will each receive $2,500 from Vans, a custom hardwood framed copy of the winning image, a spread in SURFING Magazine, a custom Will Scovel surfboard to the surfer, $2,500 and a swag box to include Kicker audio gear, Oakley, GoPro and custom design set of Futures Fins.

3rd Annual LiveLikeSion GromFest 2014 Event Recap

The day began in the dark as volunteers gathered to help set-up for the 3rd Annual LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST. The contest venue was at PKS on the southside of the island of Kauai, a place where Sion and his family had surfed countless hours together. Even in the dark you could already hear the surf as the tail end of a south swell pounded the shore. The island was buzzing as they knew that the day of the contest had finally arrived after being postponed a month before due to a close call from two hurricanes.

With over a 150 entries, the beach was packed as everyone posted up and got ready for a long day of family fun, while remembering SION MILOSKY, and his way of life. The LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST was designed around SION’s belief of family first, friends, and surfing all combined into one event.

Aunty Nalani Taylor opened the event with a prayer and a Hawaiian chant asking for safe passage and reminding everyone why we were here. The first heat paddled out at 6:45 as the buzzer started the first heat a little after 7:00. The diviSIONs were all full, ranging from keiki push-in all the way up to 16-under Longboarding. This year was a little different as a 14-under open diviSION was added for rated kids and ofcourse the “PILI” diviSION was in there too. Keiki push-in had 50 Keiki alone which was the most entries so far to date. In the “PILI”, which was a team diviSION, a adult teamed up with a Keiki under-12. Some of the names in the “PILI” were Dustin Barca, and Evan Valiere, long time friends of SION and his family.

Families and friends cheered the Keiki on all day and smiles and laughter echoed the beach. It was nice to see so much happiness and good vibes everywhere you looked. Waves were firing coming in at 3-4 foot and light offshore wind. The Keiki push-in stole the show again with the youngest competitors coming in at 3 years of age. People lined the waters edge as they cheered on their favorite. As the competition continued, Raffles were called out over and over with awesome prizes thanks to all the sponsors, supporters and the community itself. It was once again so great to see everyone come together and support such a great human being. The proceeds from the raffles went back to the LIVE LIKE SION foundation and will be allocated to different organizations and further the work of the foundation itself.

As the day wrapped up, and the final wave surfed, the celebration continued as the awards ceremony moved over to Poipu Beach. Families and friends once again gathered together and cheered on all the finalist as the prizes and trophies were passed out. The Keiki’s were glowing and wore smiles on thier faces, as they walked up to get their awards. Im not sure who had more fun the Keiki or their parents!

All and all, the 3rd Annual LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST was a huge success and would not have been possible without the help of our sponsors, friends, families and volunteers. We would like to thank Volcom for their continued support, for making the shirts and hats, giving tons of prizes, and for always supporting the Keiki and ofcourse SION MILOSKY! Also Oakley for their continued support and for all the glasses for the keiki, KonaRed and Poipu surf for the awesome trophies and always supporting the LIVE LIKE SION GROMFEST. A big thank you to the Kawika Carvalho, the community, the volunteers, the Beach house, and the countless other sponsors that helped make this event a big success!
