Put down your computer and make stuff! That’s the mission of Craft Labs, which is basically the adult* version of the arts and crafts class you took in kindergarten. Susan Peterson is an artist and educator with 20 years of experience, and works in a building full of other artists. She’ll teach you how to make things like cool gadgets, jewelry, handmade books, paper, candleholders, wrist cuffs, cards and more.

Recent classes have taught folks how to make earring, paper and mugs. If you have class ideas, she welcomes ideas. She provides all the materials and guidance, you provide the creativity.

If you spend too much time staring at your computer or working a boring job (or both!), then you could probably use some crafting time. Help recharge your mind and use your creativity.

* Adult = grown up, not porn.

Basa Seafood is 24th Street’s neighborhood fishmonger. Scott, the owner, gets the freshest fish off the boat. You can buy fish to take home, or get prepared food on the spot. Featuring fish tacos, chowder, ceviche, fish and chips, salmon burgers and more, Basa has seafood anyone in the neighborhood can afford.

Scott takes a lot of pride in his shop, and knows many of the regulars by name. He’s happy to chat with you over your ceviche or tell you what’s good today. He keeps his prices low so everyone can enjoy the healthy benefits of fresh fish. And with 10% off your prepared food purchases with your LiLo card, you no longer have to make your wallet weep when you want some omega 3s.

Basa Seafood is old school. They focus on fresh seafood and low prices over hipster baubles like aoili and websites. They’re not on facebook, twitter or pinterest, but they have 4.5 stars on Yelp and they’re proud members of Live Local. Get 10% off the food counter at Basa and do yourself a favor.

Artists Moving combines something the Mission loves (art) with something the Mission hates (moving). Let’s face it: moving reeeeeally sucks. The next time you need to move into a new apartment or office, let Artists Moving deal with the <del>backache</del> headache and help support the arts.

Artists Moving has over $3 million in general liability, so you can trust them with your important stuff. They do residential and office moving as well as home staging. They have a (biodiesel!) truck and a number of artists/movers who have navigated the city’s narrowest stairwells. Bottom line: these guys are pros.

Besides being pro movers, they are talented artists and cool guys. Which other moving company has links to the artwork of the movers on their website? They convert a truck into a mobile art gallery and display their works at the Oakland Art Murmur. How rad is that?

In LiLo’s world, affording movers is a luxury akin to flying in personal jets and eating sushi off of naked people. But now that Artists Moving offers a 10% discount, one of the biggest hassles in LiLo’s life might be at an end.

Check out Tom and the rest of the gang at Artists Moving. Support the Mission art scene and make your life easier.

Gem & Jetsam showcases “local artists and artisans whose vision and creativity help us find the gems amid the flotsam and jetsam of our modern world.” Robot pigeons are pretty into jetsam and such, so LiLo is pretty stoked to welcome Gem and Jetsam to the Mission. They discover and sell cool little gems in the realms of vintage clothes, home decor, jewelry, art and accessories.

If you make stuff, contact them and see if they’ll stock your wares. If not, check out the shop and see what your neighbors have crafted. The three folks who run Gem & Jetsam are all artists and crafters themselves, and their passion is evident in their thoughtful little shop.

Gem & Jetsam wants to be more than just a place where you buy handcrafted items. They have crafting workshops, art openings and other community events to create a stronger bond between Mission artisans and residents.

Gem & Jetsam reflects the Mission’s creativity. Plus, their dog is awesome. Stop in and say hello.

La Cocina is the most badass low income food entrepreneur incubator in the history of time. They provide industry-specific technical assistance & services and access to market opportunities to women of color and/or immigrants. The idea is to help them grow their businesses and make them economically and operationally self -sufficient. Basically, they take “hidden entrepreneurs” who know how to cook and want to formalize their businesses, and teach them how to sustainably make a living selling their delights to a grateful public.

The regulatory hurdles faced by food entrepreneurs can best be described as “redonkulous”. La Cocina gives assistance to people so they can plow through these, develop a business plan and market their creations. When people can earn a living through selling delicious street food at low cost, we all win.

La Cocina has lots of public-facing events as well. They put on the famed Street Food Festival and have specialty cooking classes run by their program graduates like Chaac-Mool, El Huarache Loco and more. Use your Live Local card to get 10% off these classes, learn how to make something tasty, and support one of the Mission’s most innovative nonprofits.

Precita Eyes is a fantastic arts organization dedicated to the preservation and creation of murals, the Mission’s greatest art form. Founded in 1977, the organization helps organize murals, connect muralists to mural-able walls and runs classes, camps and tours for all ages.

The Mission is often described as “colorful”, and Precita Eyes is a big reason why. They have created and/or facilitated much of the awesomeness you see around the Mission. By channeling energy and discontent with The Man into beautiful works of art, Precita Eyes helps inspire and motivate the community. Plus, the murals just look badass.

The have lots of different mural tours every weekend afternoon at 1:30pm and a bunch of other times as well. Use your Live Local card to get $2 off on one and learn more about the social, political and artistic murals that are the soul of the neighborhood.

She’s a professional photographer who specializes in event photography. She’s also an artist and one of the founders of Mission Artists United.

Event photography is one of those things people think they can get their friend to do for a few beers. And it’s true, you can. But if you want it done right and the event is important, don’t take the chance that your friend will get distracted by hot people or the open bar.

Trish is really good at what she does and an important contributor to the Mission arts scene. Support her, support the arts, make your event run more smoothly; everybody wins. Get 10% off event photography with your LiLo card.

Mission Alchemy is an event space located in the US Bank building at 22nd and Mission. It has stunning views of the city. So stunning, LiLo is tempted to book the place just to gawk at his beloved city.

You can host all kinds of events at Mission Alchemy. Workshops, classes, parties, meetings, seminars, you name it. They have wifi, tables, chairs, etc. For additional fees, Mission Alchemy will hook you up with whatever you need to make your event go well. They can cover food, drink, live streaming, flowers, video, staff and other stuff you need but don’t want to procure yourself.

Event rental in the Mission is crazy expensive everywhere else. For $45 an hour (10% off through LiLo!) at Mission Alchemy, you can perch above the city and meet with your group to plot world domination. Can’t beat it.

Claudia Kussano brings her appreciation of the rhythms of nature to her work as a jewelry designer. Her designs are organically inspired. She usually works in silver, gold and other metals. She studied and taught art in her native Brazil, and brings the flavor of her native land to her unique jewelry shop on Guerrero at 18th.

The mystique of the natural world guides her lines of jewelry: sprout, petal, twig, fern, dew drop, eucalyptus, pod, leaf, etc. If you like her work and are looking for a custom design, Claudia is happy to work with you to make something that merges her skills with your vision. Dudes, when it’s time to put a ring on it but your lady isn’t into the bling, check out Claudia’s engagement-ring-heavy 5-star Yelp rating and go to Claudia. Ladies, casually walk by on your way to Dolores Park and start dropping hints.

La Espiga De Oro knows what to do with an ear of corn. They make everything from scratch, a rarity at Mexican places in the Mission. To make their eye-rollingly delicious tamales, they soak corn overnight with lime (not the fruit), dry it, grind it in their molino, add oil and spices, wrap it in husks and fill it with deliciousness. No maseca, no preservatives and nothing processed. They just turn an ear of gold (their name in Spanish) into a plate of awesome.

Don’t just come for their tamales though. No less an authority than Burritoeater.com ranks La Espiga de Oro as the best burrito in the Mission, and the best tortillas in the city. Their pupusas are oozy and fantastic. They have elotes (hot, corn-based drinks) to warm you up and aguas frescas to cool you down.

America has figured out ways to turn corn and its derivatives into bad things like childhood obesity, dependence on foreign oil, soil degradation and water pollution. La Espiga De Oro turns it into good things, like natural, handmade-from-scratch Mexican food. I consider the scales even.
