It's been way too long since I posted a full-fledged Hippie Workout Mix, so what better day to post a new one than on the day of the NYC Marathon?

It’s been way too long since I posted a full-fledged Hippie Workout Mix, so what better day to post a new one than on the day of the NYC Marathon.

For Volume 5 in our Hippie Workout Mix series, I decided to go back to an old stand-by for workout tunes: Brothers Past. BP’s live shows always provide an intensity that’s just perfect for these mixes. Although they’ve only been gradually ramping up their touring schedule since reuniting a coupe years back, the limited shows they have played have been stellar. Here’s hoping they can expand to a denser touring schedule in 2012, because more people need to get a taste for this stuff in the live setting. Speaking of which, they just announced a decent-sized East Coast New Year’s run.

It seems like every band out there is mixing laptops and electronic elements into their sound, but Brothers Past’s approach is quite unique in the way that they build their improv using drum loops and sequences created on-the-fly by frontman Tommy Hamilton. With so many other bands and DJs tapping into the latest and greatest in electronic music (dubstep?), I find it refreshing to hear Brothers Past retain their own unique sound while they continue to evolve in subtle and interesting ways.

For this podcast, I’ve spliced together a combination of tracks from both past and present BP in order to give it some variety and a sense for how their improv style has evolved. As with other workout mixes, I’ve been personally testing this one out in the gym and during some runs over the last couple weeks…and this one is pretty damn intense. It starts with two signature “building” jams that gradually ramp up from mellower territory to all-out triumphant catharsis. Those two tracks are followed by a mix of different themes, moving from the light and bouncy “Boy” jam to the super dark and dirty “Heroes” outro, and finally finishing things off with the pounding assault from the ending of “The Ceiling, Part II.”

For a little more detail, check out the tracklist and notes below…

Notes
Although this isn’t intended to be a new version of my live music workout mixes, it could still work pretty well for a long, mellow jog, with occasional bursts of energy at a few spots in the middle.

In terms of track selection, I tried to use tracks that I’ve never put on another mix….which is another way of explaining why I did not include some old favs like the 7/10/99 Chalkdust, the Big Cypress DWD or Split Open and Melt > Catapult. Those gems are all on other mixes, which you should, of course, check out.

Since I recently started posting again, it was only a matter of time before I had to post a new podcast. Although I definitely have some newer mixes in the works, I decided to finally put the finishing touches on a older mix that has literally been years in the making: my Disco Biscuits “Bisco Bliss” mix.

I think I originally started putting some tracks into a “starter playlist” back in late 2007 or early 2008. Then I completely forgot about it until recently rediscovering the playlist while re-vamping my music libe. Rather than selfishly continue to hang onto it for my own ears, I decided it was finally time to complete the original idea as a full-fledged podcast.

So, I present to you Podcast #069, the Bisco Bliss Mix.

Description (short version):
The Disco Biscuits have always been well-known for their dark, dance-oriented electronic improv. And while the four-on-the-floor untz was always a staple of their live shows, I think it often overshadowed a lighter, more mellow style of jamming that a lot of fans have grown to love. For years, fans have described this major chord, happier improv as “Blissful” and some have even dubbed it “blissco.” This mix is dedicated entirely to this style of Biscuits improvisation and includes some of my favorite moments of happy, blissful jamming from the 1st incarnation of the band (i.e. Bisco 1.0).

A Couple Quick Notes:

Not Quite a “Hippie Workout Mix”
While I’m not giving this mix the official “Hippie Workout mix” designation, it could certainly be used for that purpose. In fact, I’ve already taken this on a few nice runs. It’s not bad for the longer, more mellow kind of jog, and it definitely picks up a bit towards the end.

A “Bisco Mix for Phish Fans”
I almost titled this one a “Bisco Mix for Phish fans” because I think it might surprise a few fans who never got into the band’s darker, dancier style and have typically shunned their music as a candy-raver bullshit. There’s some seriously stellar improv in this mix, so for those that dig the more guitar-driven, major-chord jams of Phish, Umphrey’s or even moe, be sure to give this a listen. You might be surprised how much you dig it.

Description (the long version):
When I first mentioned this mix to Justin, he thought it was good but could use a bit more context and explanation. So, what did I do? I went nuts and did a full play-by-play on each track that’s included in the mix (note: all links below go to the Live Music Archive page for each show).

Read on for the full, track-by-track description…

8/7/02 M.E.M.P.H.I.S. (2nd jam)
(Tussey Mountain Amphitheatre, Boalsburg, PA)
This is probably one of my favorite personal moments of Bisco here. I doubt too many other fans would flag this jam on a “best-of” list, but it was one of those moments where everything just seemed to lock in the right place….A perfect summer evening on a mountain side in the middle of nowhere, with the band ending a rockin’ show with this mellow and uber happy, major chord jam coming out of MEMPHIS. Barber starts off with this perfect little finger-tapping riff, Magner jumps in with these liquidy synth lines, and then they just lock into a slow-tempo groove to close the night. Pure Bisco Bliss.

10/5/02 Hot Air Balloon
(Haymaker Festival, Spotsylvania, VA)
Unfortunately this track always got over-shadowed by the “Astronaut” that followed it (which was some of the most evil, downright amazing space-Bisco ever). But the jam that precedes the evil darkness is pure light. I love the open space that they create with this type of improv. It’s rhythmic, but not at all the untz-untz techno that characterizes a normal bisco jam. A lot of Biscuits improv involves layers and atmospheres, but here it’s really down to the basic elements with nary a washed-out sound or ultrasonic blip. Plus, there’s also something magical about the different notes and riffs that Barber puts together during this track…all with this clean, almost shimmering tone that I have rarely ever heard him play since the 2002-2003 era. The entire two-night run at Haymaker is worth numerous listens, but this jam is a one of the more underrated of the bunch.

7/26/03 Little Shimmy in a Conga Line (jam into Aceetobee)
(Mishawaka Ampitheatre, Bellvue, CO)
This is one of the more epic happy jams I’ve been lucky enough to witness in person. There was something about the air in Colorado and the atmosphere at the Mish that allowed the Biscuits to stretch things out and really play to the natural setting around them. The Mishawaka Amphitheatre is kind of like a mini Red Rocks but more secluded and enclosed. Steep canyon walls are on both sides and provide a cool backdrop for the concert lighting. The stage — made out of large wooden poles — is nearly within jumping distance from the Poudre river, and there’s really nothing else around you except canyon walls and trees. Check out some photos to get a better idea.

But, I digress. Back to the music….I believe this is the first time they’d ever given this treatment to “Little Shimmy in a Conga Line.” They took the happier, major chord guitar part from the song’s second segment and kept repeating and vamping on it to create a new jam section. This is another one where I just love the open space that they created. So many Biscuits jams bring out these washes of sound and loud atmospherics, but this — like the HAB track above — shows how open the band’s sound can get when they’re patient and mellow.

The first part described above is basically “bliss jam, part 1.” After that, they start moving into different territory to hit on a bunch of different tones and approaches. At one point, they lock into a new groove which sounds to my ears like the intro to “Spectacle.” I wouldn’t call it a tease, but they definitely are in the right key and nearly in the right time signature. At this point, we’re clearly in “bliss jam, part 2.” Then, they start to settle into a more rhythmic playfulness before eventually changing keys and bringing us into part 3, which is all about the build-up. Seriously, it’s as if Barber has had some girl promise him sexual favors before heading on stage but ONLY if he played the most happy, amazing solo ever. He nails it, fluttering, hammering, bending notes, and absolutely raging until finally they drop into the middle section of “Aceetobee.” If you only listen to a small half of this mix, I implore you to make it this far. This is the bread & butter jam.

4/4/03 Aceetobee (1st jam)
(Fox Theater, Boulder, CO)
You’ll notice the tone switches during the little Aceetobee jam providing the bridge between the two. If you know the song at all, you’ll hear how this change matches the song precisely. If not, bare with my little transitional change-up, because this one eventually turns into pure happiness. There’s a perfect rhythmic playfulness to this improv section that always makes me grin. I think it’s the Barber riff that starts about a minute into the track that is what truly sets this one apart. What’s interesting is this comes from a completely different tour than the other show above, but yet again it’s from Colorado. There’s just something about touring Colorado that brought out the patient, happy Bisco jams (more on that later).

4/6/03 Basis for a Day (middle jam)
(Gothic Theater, Denver, CO)
This is yet another underrated selection. It’s the middle section of a long version of “Basis for a Day” and when I say “long,” this version literally served as half of an entire 1st set at the Gothic Theatre in Denver. It is definitely the only two-song set I’ve ever witnessed at a concert. I remember making sure to yell “one-song set” at the band as they came out for set II, and I distinctly recall getting a nice little chuckle from Barber as a he walked onstage (set II included more than one song. heh).

7/25/03 Down to the Bottom
(Mishawaka Ampitheatre, Bellvue, CO)
Again, this is another happy gem from the Mishawaka Amphitheatre. The great part about this one is that it’s from one of their more dark & evil songs, “Down to the Bottom.” But, given the natural setting, it’s almost like they needed to go a completely separate way during the song’s outro. Good times.

7/26/03 42 (2nd jam/outro)
(Mishawaka Ampitheatre, Bellvue, CO)
Seeing a trend? Something about those fucking Rocky Mountains just brings out the Blissco. I love this one. Lots of open space, cool atmospheric guitar and synth lines from Barber and Magner at the start. Then Brownstein settles into this prefect little bass progression. This one really made my night.

10/4/02 Triumph (jam into Crystal Ball)
(Haymaker Festival, Spotsylvania, VA)
Another trend you might notices is that it’s difficult to make any “best of” Biscuits mix without including tracks from their 2002 sets at the Haymaker Festival (10/4 & 10/5/02). This track served as the perfect raging guitar jam to come out of the Mishawaka bliss. Plus, it includes another one of those “Barber riffs.” Do you know these? Barber manages to find some perfect sequence of notes and then proceeds to the play the ever-loving shit out of the same riff, over and over, until they hit a huge peak. I know that some fans might get bummed that I didn’t include the final drop into the “Crystal Ball” that follows this, but for me this one is about the journey, not the destination….

12/30/01 King of the World
(Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA)
This is where things pick up in terms of tempo. The transition is a bit longer on this one, but the band eventually slips into happy territory and hits the lighter style of improv. Although Barber is the one to lock into the major chord riff on guitar, this one is all about Aaron Magner’s backdrop of keyboard atmospherics. He plays these heavenly washes of sound but also includes this strange, almost industrial rhythmic part for the first minute or so. I can’t find the specific reference, but I distinctly remember someone on PT describing Magner’s sound here as something akin to “being flown around by mechanical fairies.” Hehe, f-ing Bisco kids….but hey, it is a pretty good description of that sound.

12/28/01 Mr. Don jam > Story of the World ending
(Worcester Palladium, Worcester, MA)
So I decided to end things with a bang and throw in this bouncy jam out of Mr. Don from 2001, which is basically some of the happiest, bumpin’ Bisco from the 1.0 era. Although many “Mr. Don” outros have a similar major-chord jam, this one is especially jumpin’ and it’s all about the Brownstein bass pop. About a minute into this track, they all lock into a driving groove, and Marc Brownstein starts throwin’ out these punchy bass licks, complete with the extra bubbly pop from his Electro-Harmonix Bassballs pedal. They then gradually build the momentum and add layers until the energy pretty much hits the ceiling of the Worcester Palladium. They absolutely nail the peak back into the ending of “Story of the World,” and provide a nice way to end the mix on a high note.

A couple final notes about this mix:

Overall, I tried to use tracks that I’ve never used on another mix, which is why a few key tracks are NOT included (i.e. the 12/29/01 Shelby Rose or 3/8/02 Above the Waves)

I’m aware of a few other fans making similar mixes, including PT Bisco user “treemaculate.” If you dig this style overall, I highly recommend his Blissco compilations. I only used a few of the same tracks.

I had to make some really tough cuts so this mix wasn’t ridiculously long. But I may be able to do a 2nd version some day. If you have suggestions, leave us a comment or put something in our Soundcloud dropbox:

Phish finished up their summer tour last night at Jones Beach on Long Island, NY, and by now you’ve likely heard about the guy falling (jumping?) from the balcony during the setbreak. Hidden Track has the full report. I felt ill for the people that would have been around that and seen it happen (or any part of the aftermath); what a horrific sight. Let’s hope the guy is on the mend, and let’s kindly ask him to never come to a show again. Kthxbai.

Moving right along, in between listening to the amazing sounding streams coming out of the last two nights (thanks taper420!), I’ve also been listening through the three shows that I saw back when the band was in town for the Greek Theater run. Even though the last run of shows have been clearly the stronger musical moments of the summer for the band, I’m still partial to the three nights in Berkeley. Sure, Alpine night one may have been musically stronger and Telluride may have been a bit more epic in terms of historic natural surroundings, but the shows that I’m going to remember and care about most were the ones that consumed my three days a few weeks back. I gave some thoughts on each night briefly but couldn’t expand much further without gushing completely fanboy all over the blog, not that I should fight that urge, but I really wanted to wrap up the run a bit differently this time.

That brings us nicely to a return of something we don’t spend nearly enough time on anymore — Podcasts! It’s almost a lost art-form for us at this point and at one time we feared that podcasts are not the ideal form of media consumption for a lot of our readers. That said, it’s a great way for us to put something together for our audience that requires little effort on your part. Just hit play below and listen to my favorite 75 minutes from the entire run, and follow along to read my thoughts on each of the jams. That’s easy listening. That should make anybody happy. Or subscribe in iTunes and get every mix we make sent directly to your media library; that works, too!

Tracklist

Kill Devil Falls (8.5.10) – Some people may balk at this selection, but this was the moment that I locked into the band as they were playing and really felt the band relax and take form into a warmed-up entity ready to groove everyone’s socks off. I was fortunate enough to have gotten a photo pass for this first night, so I was in the pit about halfway through “The Divided Sky” which was about 10 minutes longer than any photographers are normally allowed to stand up close for (industry standard is 15 minutes or three songs). All of those songs become a complete blur in that my memories include the confetti cannons being shot off more so than I remember the funkiness of the “Wolfman’s Brother.” All I remember is having a blast jumping around speakers, trying to zoom and focus swiftly with my crappy lens, and watching the crowd just completely lose their shit. But then I found my buddies and got deep into this groove. This is a confident version and the beginning of the band loosening up, so that’s why it deserves a listen to get you ready for…

Tweezer (8.5.10) – The second set from the first night at the Greek was fantastic front to back. I thought “Disease > Free” was played well, confidently, and there was some level of transition there that got me thinking that the band knew what was planned. “Maze” tore the roof off, though. Kuroda clearly pulled up his classic “Maze” pattern which really seems to highlight just how dark and ominous this song is supposed to feel. The band clearly liked that version, too. Then a breather in “Joy,” but the entire crowd got sent off the rails with some deep funk in “Tweezer,” not something I expected that late in the set at that moment. If you listen to the soundboards on this, Fishman’s drums are just absolutely echoing throughout the venue when they get into the jam section. I was dancing way too hard during this part of the show and for that, it easily gets my nod as one of the musical highlights of the run.

Cities (8.6.10) – Featuring the first “Berkeley Jam” of the run, this “Cities” is the stuff that people immediately started writing home about. It’s immediately funky and followed a relatively uneventful start of the second night, which in hindsight, shouldn’t seem totally correct. I just don’t remember either the crowd or the band feeling super warmed up for the openers: “Chalk Dust Torture,” “Guyute” and “Ocelot.” Sure, “It’s Ice” came early and got people psyched that this could be a bust-out laden set, but “Cities > Moma Dance” was where everyone got up to seriously get down. What a moment.

Oh and this one, too…

SERIOUSLY.

Simple (8.6.10) – Yet another highlight that I was feeling and grooving to that clearly the band agreed with, “Simple” absolutely slayed the Mike’s Groove into something that we were all waiting to see at this level of Phish’s “3.0″ career. I was defniitely feeling the “Rock and Roll” opener for the second set, something that’s a bit predictable these days. But there didn’t feel to be any predictable nature to starting a set with “Rock and Roll” then “Ghost” then “Mike’s > Simple.” The jam leading out of it was sublime. This moment felt like that classic Phish moment to me as well. Silly song leading to ambiance bringing way to arena-sized anthemic jam rock? That’s clearly a horrible way to describe it that takes the essence out of it, so just keep listening to the podcast and you’ll get a feel for what I mean.

Gotta Jibboo (8.7.10) – The third night of the run got off to a rocky start for my buddy, but thanks to the medical tent guys he was in good hands and the rest of the crew was able to relax and not worry about our fallen comrade. We were bummed to miss him at the show, but we were quickly forgetting about that as the sun was setting on the final show of Phish in Berkeley. It’s that bittersweet feeling that seemed to have a linger over this show for me as I knew my tour was going to be short-lived. But “Gotta Jibboo” is always a happy song and something I feel really raises that spirit inside me. I think it makes me realize that dancing to music I love in a crowd of 8,000 amazing and awesome people is one of those moments that really makes me feel emotionally, spiritually and physically balanced. I can always let go of my thoughts on this tune the moment that Trey drops into his feedback delay loop that always opens the jam section of the song up. This version did that for me that Saturday evening.

Light (8.7.10) – I remember being floored by this “Light” like many of the other versions I’ve seen between last year’s 10 shows and this version on the final night of the run. This is indeed their new exploratory song, the new “Piper” if you will, and I can’t welcome it enough. This version is beyond inspired. It closes out a nice set of music for you and it really peaked the energy on the final note to show the power that they had over the audience when it’s really good. I don’t remember hearing talking around me but only people letting the ambient jam fill their hearts. Even though @Phortin never put together his “Ambient Jam” sign like he was planning, I’m pretty sure the band gave him a fair enough ambient-laden post-rock jam here that I wouldn’t want him or anyone else to complain.

75 minutes of pure inspiration if you ask me. Thanks for the summer tour, @Phish. It was a good one.

A few weeks back, I caught one of my favorite Medeski, Martin & Wood shows I’ve seen to date. These guys seem to be a point in their career where they can do no wrong, and the show I saw definitely did not disappoint. So I thought I’d ask a friendly taper if we could use his source of the show for our next podcast and he happily complied with the ask, so hopefully this little podcast mix will help you groove your way through your Sunday. I threw the tracks together using my new “DJ” setup and it’s the first of many more mixes to come from me. Think of it as a dubbed out version of the memories I came away with from the show. Enjoy!

Phew. I’ve had one crazy summer! My sincere apologies for the radio silence. Moving to a big city will do that to a guy. For those that don’t know, I’m now officially a resident of Brooklyn and I couldn’t be more excited. Although there are ton of reasons to get excited about living in NYC, one of the great parts of my new spot is the sudden expansion of my concert calendar. Earlier today, I did a quick perusal of my options this Fall and was in shock at all the possibilities. Admittedly, free time, finances, and a need for sleep will certainly be getting in the way of those possibilities, but for the most part, I’m basically a kid in a fuckin’ candy store of rock’n'roll. Hooray NYC live music!

While I’m already looking ahead to the Fall concert calendar (and liking what I’m seeing), I can’t quite move on without a little reflection on my summer. Although things were nuttier than hell for me, I still managed to hit some good shows, including four Phish concerts when all was said and done. From all that I witnessed in person — along with a heavy bout of listening sessions — I generally liked what I heard. I think the band hit some serious high notes along the way, including some killer improvisation.

As a result, I thought the best way to get back into the live music blogging world was with one my favorite LMB past-times: creating new Live Music Blog podcasts. So in honor of Phish’s triumphant return to the summer stage –- and to me being lucky enough to enjoy much of it in person — I’ve pieced together a DJ-style mix of what I consider to be some of the band’s best improvisational moments from their 2009 summer shows. As with previous mixes, I’ve cut right to the “meat” of the improv by splicing together only the jam sections and leaving out the vocal and main song segments.

There was some pretty top-notch jamming this summer, so this one clocks in at just over an hour. Although I think I’ve covered the key highlights, I am sure there are still plenty of other gems out there that I missed. So if I somehow neglected your favorite jam segment of the summer, I apologize. There was a lot of material to sift through! Either way, take a listen and make sure to drop us a comment with your impressions or share your personal favorite jams from the summer tour. Most of all, enjoy!

Back in December, I was lucky enough to catch a reunited Brothers Past play a killer NYE show outside of Philly. With their original drummer, Rick Lowenberg, back in the mix, BP reminded me why I became such a fan of their unique brand of live electronic dance music.

As I’ve been getting back into working out and running a bit more frequently, I realized I was low on new workout tunes to get me motivated. As a result, I decided to put together another version of our Hippie Workout Mix, this time with a focus on the badass beats of Brothers Past.

BP’s precise drum and bass beats and layered polyrhythms give this mix an extra kick in terms of intensity. In fact, on my test runs with this thing, it was often pretty difficult to keep up. I have no doubt it’ll get you moving.

Enjoy:

With all the excitement of the recent announcement of Phish’s reunion, it may seem a bit odd that our Phish Friday posts have calmed down a bit here on the site. Although Justin and I have definitely been a bit nuts in our day jobs, to be frank, we have also gotten a bit burnt out on it doing Phish Friday posts. A few weeks ago, we basically hit a wall and decided that there was so much good stuff going on out there that we didn’t feel like we could keep up. Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts has been rocking out great compilations, the Coventry blog is collectively kicking some butt, and Scotty B’s HT Phish spin-off, You Enjoy MyBlog is tracking all things web and Phish. Considering this blog was founded back in ’04 basically after Justin’s post-Phish show epiphany that “nobody was blogging about Phish,” it is honestly great to see other sites really taking this on in full swing and digging in to the band’s long history of amazing live shows.

Although our Phish Friday posts may be a bit less frequent these days, we are certainly not calling it quits. With that in mind, I decided to mix together two of my favorite types of posts — Phish Fridays and Podcasts — and piece together a new version of our Hippie Workout Mix with some of my favorite moments of Phish improv, spliced together with a nice, mellow workout in mind. Believe it or not, a while back I used to run to this band’s music all the time. There is something about a perfect Phish jam and a good run that works really well together; call it zen or something. But whether you’re really up for that long workout or just want a really killer DJ-style Phish mix, this should definitely suit your needs.

Editor’s note: in my haste in switching over the site to WordPress I forgot to make sure our podcast feed was rigged up correctly. I’m working on fixing it, but in the meantime you can come and stream the podcast on the site using the built in music player on the site. We’ve got a special guest podcast for our return to form (yet again) and we’re seriously would not want to miss a chance to spread a good message and some good tunes with a podcast following up the Vice Presidential debate. The title of the podcast says it all. Take it away, Ryan…

Hello Live Music Blog.com listeners and readers, this is Ryan Pedersen, Editor of livemusicpodcast.net and your guest host for Podcast #062. Justin and I have collaborated to bring you a special podcast to raise awareness of an issue that is very important to us. Voter registration deadlines are fastly approaching in many states with some as early as October 4th. Even if you are not planning on voting we still strongly encourage you to register anyway, especially if you make the decision to vote when it’s too late.

The fact is that you really have nothing to lose by registering and the process is very quick and requires little effort. A great place to start is by going to non-partisan websites RocktheVote.com or HeadCount.org to begin the registration process or to check the voter registration deadlines in your state.

To help drive home the importance of voting I will be playing a compilation of politically charged audience recordings that were downloaded via archive.org and bt.etree.org. All of the artists that will be featured have open taping policies so we encourage you to download the rest of the concerts using the links provided. A big thanks go out to these bands for their open policies and the tapers, which without their efforts this show would not be possible. Please enjoy the music and if you haven’t already done so get registered to vote today!!
