The Trent Alexander-Arnold saga took its toll on Liverpool, and they now face the same situation with Ibrahima Konate, who is out of contract this summer.

Andrew Robertson is also expected to leave the club when his contract runs out this summer, but Liverpool are nowhere close to being offered a reprieve.

At least 10 players are out of contract in 2027, so Liverpool must decide whether to extend their stay or cash in this summer.

Read on as we explore which players could stay and who could leave this summer.

Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk came close to leaving Liverpool last season but ultimately penned a new two-year deal to remain the club captain until 2027.

The 34-year-old has already established himself as a club legend, but it may be time for Liverpool to cut him loose as he has started showing signs of slowing down.

However, the club would be better off letting him run out the clock as he remains the most reliable centre-back in the dressing room and the heart of the Liverpool backline.

The club has been planning ahead, bringing in young talent such as Giovanni Leoni and agreeing a future deal for Jeremy Jacquet.

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah also penned a new two-year deal last season to end months of transfer speculation.

But rumours linking him with a move away from Liverpool this summer have refused to go away, particularly with clubs in Saudi Arabia renewing their interest.

In fairness, it may be time for Liverpool to cash in on their long-serving talisman. Salah is going through his worst goalscoring spell since his debut campaign at Liverpool.

The 33-year-old has scored just eight goals and eight assists in 30 games across all competitions.

Liverpool once turned down an earth-shattering bid for the Egyptian. If interested suitors return with such a proposal this summer, the Reds would be silly to turn it down again.

Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez is another long-serving Liverpool star whose contract runs out in 2027.

He has been a useful squad player, but his woeful injury record could be the only reason Liverpool doesn’t extend his stay at Anfield beyond the end of next season.

Since returning from a lengthy lay-off, he has significantly bolstered Arne Slot’s options in defence, and his versatility is another ace up the manager’s sleeve.

Despite his injury problems, Gomez has featured 22 times in all competitions this season. Fifteen of those games have come in the Premier League, although he only started five.

Nevertheless, Liverpool may be better off extending his contract for another year or two, if only to give him more time to finally score his first goal for the club.

Alisson

It would be interesting to see how Liverpool handles Alisson’s contract situation next season.

When the club secured Giorgi Mamardashvili last year, many saw it as planning for life after their long-time number one.

However, Alisson has shown no signs of slowing down and continues to perform at the highest level.

Unless there’s an obvious decline in his performances next season, Liverpool may not see a reason to cash in on their 33-year-old shot-stopper.

The Brazilian international is another Liverpool player who has caught the eye of clubs in Saudi Arabia.

But if he keeps performing at his usual level, Mamardashvili may have to wait much longer to collect the baton from his South American counterpart.

Harvey Elliott

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott has been trapped in a nightmare loan spell at Aston Villa and may be desperate to move on from both clubs in the summer.

As a lifelong Liverpool supporter, Elliott likely hoped for a fresh start where he could play regularly and prove his worth after falling down the pecking order at Anfield.

The 22-year-old joined the top four contenders, hoping to turn a new leaf in his career, but Villa’s reluctance to pay the agreed appearance-related fee has left Elliott frozen out of Unai Emery’s squad.

Liverpool negotiated a clause in his loan deal that mandates Villa to pay £35 million to make his move permanent if he makes 10 appearances.

But Emery is unsure if the midfielder fits into his long-term plans, and the situation will likely force Liverpool to cash in on the Englishman this summer.

Wataru Endo

Liverpool signed Wataru Endo from VfB Stuttgart in 2023 and was immediately considered a panic buy.

A few years down the line, that stance has been validated. Liverpool only brought him in after missing out on their top two targets, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who went to Chelsea.

After joining Liverpool, Endo earned the trust of ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and got ample minutes to prove his worth to the Kop.

However, his situation has become worse since Slot’s arrival. Endo has barely featured in the Premier League under Slot’s leadership.

He has made just eight Premier League appearances, starting once. Liverpool may look to cash in on the Japanese midfielder before he enters the final year of his contract.

Kostantinos Tsimikas

Konstantinos Tsimikas was shipped off to AS Roma on loan after failing further down the pecking order following the arrival of Milos Kerkez.

However, he has also struggled to assert himself in Serie A, and Roma reportedly can’t wait to send him back to Liverpool.

Even with Robertson expected to leave Liverpool when his contract runs out this summer, Tsimikas may still be considered surplus to requirements.

Tsimikas hasn’t done enough to earn a new contract, but it remains to be seen if Liverpool will keep him long enough to find a replacement.

Stefan Bajcetic

Stefan Bajcetic returned to Liverpool last summer, although the midfielder has been sidelined with injury for the majority of the season.

The Spanish midfielder was once considered one of Liverpool’s brightest young talents. He made 22 appearances under Klopp and showed maturity beyond his years.

However, he has struggled to build on that breakthrough since. At 21, he still has time to turn his career around. But he may have to do that away from Anfield.

Curtis Jones

Academy graduate Curtis Jones is another Liverpool star who could be headed for the exit this summer.

He was courted by Inter Milan in January, but Liverpool were unwilling to let him explore a loan move without first committing to a new contract.

That suggests the club still want to retain the services of their academy star, so it remains to be seen if they reopen contract talks.

However, there have been reports of the midfielder potentially falling out with Slot, so there’s a decent chance the club could cash in on him this summer.

Calvin Ramsay

Calvin Ramsay joined Liverpool three and a half years ago but is yet to make his Premier League debut.

The fact that Slot prefers to field Dominik Szoboszlai and Jones at right back rather than turning to the Scottish defender speaks volumes about his place in the squad.

The 22-year-old has hardly had a chance to prove his worth. Unfortunately, he may be one of several names headed for the Anfield exit this summer.

Manager Arne Slot has claimed that Liverpool have suffered ‘bad luck’‘ with injuries and conceding late goals this season.

Liverpool’s title defence has faltered and the club risk missing out on Champions League qualification as they are five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

On the injury front, Liverpool have had to deal with several players missing, with record signing Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, and Conor Bradley currently out.

However, Liverpool have not been the most affected by injuries this season. They rank 13th among teams that have been worst affected by injury.

In addition, Liverpool’s injury woes have been self-inflicted, with the refusal to sign a centre-back and right-back proving costly.

Regarding conceding late winning goals, the Reds have conceded a 90th-minute winner four times, equalling the joint-highest tally in Premier League history.

Overall, Slot’s side have conceded six goals in second-half stoppage this term – equalling a club record.

This is also self-inflicted, due to Slot’s refusal to trust his squad. Liverpool have eight players who have started 20+ league games, a joint record in the division.

This means Liverpool get worn out during games, allowing opponents to capitalise late on.

Slot needs to start giving more minutes to players such as Calvin Ramsey, Rio Ngumoha, Federico Chiesa, and Curtis Jones to reduce the effect of injuries on his squad and the number of late goals they concede.

Ultimately, this could strengthen Liverpool’s top-four push and improve their chances in the Champions League and FA Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting to sign Liverpool star Andy Roberton in the 2026 winter transfer window.

Spurs initially planned to pursue a deal for the 31-year-old in the summer.

But that pursuit has been brought forward in an effort to strengthen head coach Thomas Frank’s squad immediately, per The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Robertson has fallen down the pecking order after Liverpool splashed a £40 million fee to sign Milos Kerkez last summer.

He has made only 13 Premier League appearances so far this campaign, with nine coming off the bench.

Destiny Udogie has been Tottenham’s first-choice left-back since he joined the club in 2023.

But injury issues have limited his involvement this season, with the Italian starting only six Premier League games.

Djed Spence has often played on the left side of defence, despite being a right-back as his natural position.

Ben Davies also filled in at left-back in recent weeks, but the Welsh footballer picked up an ankle injury during last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United. Davies is set to undergo a surgery on Monday.

Tottenham are keen to land Robertson in January, as he is a proven Premier League performer who would add quality, experience and leadership to the squad.

The Scotland international has been one of the best servants for Liverpool since joining the club from Hull City in 2017.

He has helped the Reds lift two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2019.

Robertson has made 363 appearances across all competitions, with 12 goals and 68 assists to his name.

He is a top left-back who is known for his relentless energy, excellent crossing and tireless overlapping runs.

But Robertson is now on the wrong side of 30 and an Anfield exit looks imminent, with his contract at the club ending in June.

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool looked in doubt after he gave a stunning interview in which he claimed to have been ‘thrown under the bus’ by the club.

The Egypt international also claimed his relationship with manager Arne Slot has collapsed.

The forward’s outburst led him to being dropped out of the Reds’ squad for the Champions League victory at Inter Milan in midweek.

But Salah has since been re-integrated into the team, with the 33-year-old coming off the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.

He will now jet off to join Egypt in Cairo over the coming days as they prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations.

With AFCON set to begin on 21 December, Salah is guaranteed to miss the next three fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United.

Depending on Egypt’s progress in the knockout stages, the forward could also miss January’s games against Fulham, Arsenal, Barnsley and Burnley.

During Salah’s exile, Slot featured Dominik Szoboszlai on the right wing and the versatile footballer was excellent with his performances.

Operating in different positions, the Hungarian has started all 16 Premier League matches this campaign, with three direct goal contributions to his name.

But Szoboszlai picked up a knock during the Reds’ 2-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.

This means Federico Chiesa can finally earn a run of games in the Liverpool starting XI.

The 28-year-old has played 11 times in the English top-flight, but all of them have been from the bench.

Alternatively, Slot could start 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha on the right-hand side, or Jeremie Frimpong may be given a shot when he returns from a hamstring injury.

Liverpool won a record-equalling 20th title in England’s top flight last season on the back of Mohamed Salah’s remarkable form.

Arne Slot won the Premier League in his first season on Merseyside, largely thanks to the 33-year-old’s formidable goalscoring record.

Salah was named the Player of the Season for the second time since arriving at Anfield in 2017 after racking up a jaw-dropping 47 goal contributions.

Though his 18 league assists left him just short of Thierry Henry’s all-time record for a single Premier League season, 29 goals crowned him the Golden Boot winner for the fourth time.

With that in mind, it’s hard to ignore the sense that the Reds have grown increasingly reliant on their talismanic winger, who shows no signs of slowing down despite turning 33 in June.

Aware of the situation, Liverpool embarked on a shopping spree in the summer transfer window, splashing out £295.5 million on seven new additions, including the club record signing, Alexander Isak.

Isak’s arrival from Newcastle United on deadline day set the Anfield powerhouse back a British record fee of around £125m, yet the Swedish striker has stuttered at the start of the season.

Fresh firepower

While Isak is still waiting for his first Premier League goal in the Reds shirt, his attacking comrade, Hugo Ekitike, has hit the ground running.

The Frenchman has tallied three goals and one assist in six league outings, leading Spreadex Sports’ research to put him in the 10-goal region for the season.

Despite Isak’s slow start, the same analysis backs him to hit a 12-goal landmark in his maiden campaign at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo, who went from strength to strength during Liverpool’s title-winning season, will likely play a prominent role again this season.

As such, Spreadex projects the Dutch forward to reach double figures in 2025/26, even though he may spend less time on the pitch than he did last term.

Florian Wirtz, who used to tear defences apart in the Bundesliga, has been a mere shadow of his former self at Anfield. However, as an elite playmaker, the German prodigy is in contention for at least five goals.

New arrivals should help alleviate the pressure on Salah, providing Liverpool with greater attacking depth and reducing the team’s reliance on the veteran’s individual brilliance.

One-man army

Salah has been Liverpool’s headline performer since joining the club from Roma eight years ago, carving his name out in the club’s history books.

However, the Egyptian superstar is approaching the autumn of his illustrious career.

Unfazed by the passing of time, Salah has enjoyed a decent start to the season, scoring two goals and adding two assists in the opening seven Premier League rounds.

Though that’s a far cry from last season’s numbers, Salah remains odds-on to be the Reds’ top scorer in the league this season, with Spreadex backing him to hit a 14-goal mark.

Given Isak’s poor start and Wirtz’s inability to adapt to the Premier League’s high intensity, the former Chelsea flop may have to outperform predictions to help Liverpool retain the crown.

Big-money signings must step up

Isak’s early struggles at Anfield probably stem from a turbulent summer.

The 26-year-old forced his move to Liverpool in the final hours of the transfer window, pushing Newcastle into a sale they were reluctant to make.

Yet, after hitting a 20-goal mark in the last two Premier League seasons, he arrived at Liverpool carrying lofty expectations.

The same applies to Wirtz, who established himself as one of Europe’s finest talents at Bayer Leverkusen.

Both players have the quality to become game-changers under Slot, yet they must hit top form sooner rather than later if they’re to help Liverpool keep pace with Manchester City and Arsenal.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the American owners of Liverpool, are edging closer to a deal for Spanish club Getafe — and it could reshape the balance of power in European football.

Talks with Getafe president Ángel Torres are said to centre on a staged takeover rather than an outright purchase, with the LaLiga side valued between £100–135 million. While that figure may seem modest compared to Premier League valuations, the potential benefits for Liverpool could be enormous.

Multi-club ownership has already proven its worth. Manchester City’s City Football Group have turned their global network into a talent pipeline, while Red Bull’s links between Leipzig and Salzburg have delivered remarkable success. For Liverpool, adding Getafe to FSG’s growing empire would open similar doors.

A foothold in Spain would give Liverpool a controlled environment to develop prospects who are not yet ready for Anfield. Young players could earn minutes in one of Europe’s top five leagues, acclimatising to elite football without the intense scrutiny of the Premier League. The appeal also extends to South American talent, where Spanish clubs traditionally enjoy easier access to signings due to language, culture and visa considerations.

Torres’ insistence on staying in charge until Getafe’s stadium redevelopment is complete means this may be a long-term play. But that suits FSG’s cautious approach — and Liverpool stand to benefit from the gradual integration of the Madrid-based club into a broader network.

Critics will point to FSG’s reluctance to match the spending power of rivals. Yet this move isn’t about one-off splurges. It’s about building sustainable advantages. If Liverpool can emulate City’s model, but on their own terms, they could create a talent pathway that ensures success well into the 2030s and beyond.

For rivals, that should be a chilling prospect.
