Is there one place that has you returning time and time again? A city, resort town, or even a hotel where you found "love at first stay" and have been going to ever since? As travel writers and regular travellers we love nothing more than to discover new destinations and experiences, but we do have one place in the world that we return to time and again. 

Boston may not be the first city you visit when you go to the US – it is often in the shade of the bright lights of another, perhaps more famous metropolis on the country's eastern seaboard. But this coastal conurbation has become one of the most popular destinations in the US for second and third time visitors. We had a wonderful time discovering its history, arts, culture and great food, and have put together this guide to the best things to do in Boston, to give you inspiration for your trip. 

Romania's Black Sea resorts may not be the first places you think of when considering a European summer holiday, but perhaps they should be. Mamaia and Constanța have long been popular in Romania and with in the know continental travellers, but in the UK, they are up and coming destinations. Still they have much to tempt visitors who usually holiday at one of the Mediterranean's offerings, and while southern European temperatures continue to soar ever higher, this warm and relaxing coastline is awaiting discovery. On our recent visit to Mamaia and Constanța we discovered a wealth of great things to do on the Black Sea coast at very reasonable prices.

I don't know what I expected of Gozo - it's an island that seems always to be an adjunct to the main event. Malta and Gozo is a little like the hors d'oeuvre to the entree, with Gozo rarely having its time in the limelight without mention of its big sister island. But years after I went to Malta for the first time, and keen as ever to dig deeper into a destination and explore the slightly lesser known, I finally made my way there and found many lovely things to do in Gozo. 

While Spain's reign as one of the most popular countries for UK travellers is undisputed, there are still a relatively small number of travellers that head to its northern regions. And yet, they hold so much that we all love, from spectacular coastlines to fascinating culture that, like an ever-evolving story, unfolds, wends and winds from the Gaelic influences of Galicia and Asturias to the distinct characteristics of Basque Country, then on to Catalonia, and south and you'll find yourself immersed in Spain's Moorish past once more in Zaragoza. Then there are Spain's Northern cities – the famed like San Sebastian and Bilbao deserve their moment in the spotlight, but I recently discovered four of the best Spanish cities to add to the list of places I'd return to in the north. In this guide, I'd like to introduce you to the lesser-known cities of Gijón and Oviedo in Asturias.

Oviedo - the name rolls off the tongue in slightly exotic fashion. Though I'd heard of it, I have to confess to knowing very little about this northern Spanish city before I was invited to explore it recently, however I was soon to discover that it's a city with a lot of soul. I had started a tour of cities by train just down the road - ahem, rails, in Gijón, in the same region, Asturias, and after hearing just a little of it's attractions I was keen to discover things to do in Oviedo, from its culture and history to its food scene. As the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Asturias, it is without doubt that Oviedo had an auspicious start. It may not be the most visited of Spanish cities, but it has hosted visitors from pilgrims to courtiers since its inception, as it served both as a centre for the Spanish court and has long been a popular stopping-off point for those walking the Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago – the Original Way of St James.

How often do you drop into a city on a short break and then three days later find that you're flying home feeling as though you've only been able to sample a snapshot of life there? We have definitely done this over the years, and though returning to a place offers us a chance to explore more, we see the benefits of longer stays in a place where we can not only take in more of its culture and atmosphere but find ways to connect more with our destination so our visit contributes to the local community. Tourism bringing benefit to the local community is very much at the heart of sustainable travel in the 2020s (long gone is the purely "green travel" thinking of the industry in days gone by). So it was with this impetus that we recently enjoyed a more sustainable city break to Graz, in Austria.

From a European perspective, when I consider the Caribbean, Puerto Rico would rarely be an island I'd have thought about visiting. While this corner of the US is a popular Spring Break destination for American mainlanders it isn't as well known or visited for us Brits. Yet, my recent visit to this fascinating Caribbean island has given me an insight into a fabulous place, and one to which I'm already plotting my return. I found so many great things to do in Puerto Rico – a destination that is also challenging the usual status quo of Caribbean travel – which is often based around chain hotels and all inclusives – to put the focus on sustainable travel to the benefit of the whole community.

When people talk of paradise it's often of white sand beaches where the sun warms your skin and the ocean air fills your lungs. But what if I told you that you could find paradise of a different kind in one of Canada's lesser known provinces? Newfoundland & Labrador may not be the first province you think to visit in Canada, but it will reward you with incredible experiences, spectacular landscapes and a seriously warm welcome. I wasn't sure just what I would find when visiting Newfoundland & Labrador - it's not somewhere that people often talk about, so it's probably safe to say that the masses are unfamiliar with it. But that to me is definitely some of its appeal. 

Locals in the Twin Cities of the United States will tell you that Minneapolis is for dating, but you marry St Paul. Having partied in the former, and languished in the elegance of the latter, I believe they have that right. Whether you are a family wanting to discover an exciting new destination, a holiday adventurer, or a couple looking for an amazing place to lose yourselves in, you will find so many great things to do in Minneapolis and St Paul. Exploring these two incredible US cities in the state of Minnesota, it was a surprise to find that they give the best of cities a run for their money when laying claim to a fascinating history, dining and cultural experiences and even natural beauty.
