If you're a website owner and you're trying to get organic search engine traffic then you've probably heard the term "Google Pagerank". But what is Pagerank and how does a websites pagerank effect search engine rankings? In this article I'll address those questions and try to give you some insight into this often confusing topic.

What is Google pagerank?
Google developed the "pagerank" system several years ago for the purpose of gauging how "important" a web page is. The higher the pagerank, the more "important" Google thinks the webpage is. Google uses this gauge as a part of its ranking algorithm.
Where does pagerank come from?
Pagerank is all about webpages linking to other webpages. You see, every page that Google indexes has a pagerank value associated with it. Every time one page links to another page, a portion of that pagerank value "passes" to the page it links to. Higher ranking pages, pass more pagerank to the pages they link to.
What happens is, when one page links to another page, it's kind of like the page that does the linking is voting for the other page. So to get pagerank to your webpage, all you have to do is get other pages to link to it.

Pagerank is really just a mathematical calculation that determines how "important" a webpage is based on how "important" the pages that link to it are.

A crucial point here that is often misunderstood is that pagerank is passed on a page by page basis. Many webmasters assume that a sites pagerank is determined by its home page. While it's true that the homepage is often the highest ranking page within a website, it doesn't have to be. Any page on a given website could rank higher then the homepage.

The myth that the homepage will have the highest pagerank comes from the fact that many webmasters (especially old school webmasters) participated in reciprocal linking programs where they would exchange links to each others homepages. So, by default, the homepage wound up with the highest pagerank simply because it had the most links pointing to it.

So how will my pagerank affect my search engine rankings?
Pagerank is simply not as powerful as it once was. There was a time when all you had to do to rank well was to get enough websites to link to you and you could dominate virtually any listing you wanted. Today, the ranking algorithm is much more complex. Many other factors are taken into account. However, pagerank does still play a reasonably important roll so getting backlinks is still a major task in the search engine optimization world. It's just that the way we go about getting those links has changed.
How do I check a sites pagerank?
Google offers a free toolbar that you can download and install on your machine. One of the things this toolbar does is to display the Pagerank of whatever webpage you're looking at.
One final note, my recommendation is to never worry too much about Pagerank. Build your website to the best of your ability; create well written, compelling web pages and you'll get backlinks naturally. Further, take some of your better articles and submit them to a few article directories - include a resource box which links back to your site and you'll get some excellent backlinks pretty quickly. Just stay away from reciprocal linking campaigns, whatever benefit they once had is long gone.

What Really Matters

For starters, you need to understand what matters to them. I have been an advocate for completing basic audience profiles. The goal of these profiles is to get a sense of how your audience thinks, rather than just who your audience is. In these profiles, you will identify a few key things:

What is their name?
What do they do?
What keeps them up at night? (i.e. What are they worried about?)
What motivates them to read your stuff?
What do they need most from you? How can you help them?

The goal is to complete several profiles and then use them as you write new posts. As you write, you should be talking directly to one of your audience members. You should have them specifically in mind. When we write TO someone rather than simple FOR someone we can do a much better job of relating to them on a human level. But, sometimes even this exercise isn't enough.

When Profiles Aren't Enough

Recently, during a weekly consulting session, I was reviewing this concept with clients. We were at the point in the course where we were discussing the audience profiles that they had completed as part of their homework. It was during this time that one of the attendees interrupted the course to announce her creative approach. It was a great moment. She quickly confessed that she didn't know how her audience would answer the questions. So, what did she do? She called them and asked!

The big takeaway is that you can't simply rely on your best guess as a blogger to define your audience. Even if you are taking a more human approach, your guess will always be a guess. The beauty of working as a blogger during the social media revolution is that you have direct access to your audience. What would happen if you went a step further? What could you learn about your audience if you started turning some of your digital connections into real-life relationships. Here are 5 creative ways that will help you do just that.

Method #1 - Call Them

What would happen if you asked your blog readers for a their phone numbers? It's likely that many wouldn't want to give you that information, but some might. What would happen if you took a few moments out of your day to call them, and learn about who they are? This is a simple technique that almost no one uses. Just think of the edge that you could develop if you took the time to talk with your readers. Write a few prepared questions, but allow the conversation to meander. Talk about what they want to talk about.

Method #2 - Take Them Out to Coffee

Just like the attendee in the workshop, sometimes the best way to learn is to sit down and talk. You probably have at least a few blog readers that are close enough to call, or if not, get in touch with one of them the next time you travel. The purpose of this meeting isn't to grill them with hard questions. Keep it casual and just talk. You want to get to know them. Be genuine, and you might be surprised with what you learn about them, and why the read your blog.

Method #3 - Schedule A Meetup

Meetups can be great way to get to know several readers all at once, and it doesn't have to be complicated. Pick a date, time, and location and invite your readers out for a drink or a cup of coffee. Again, the purpose here is to simply get to know them more, and create meaningful connections. Don't be discouraged if the gathering is smaller. In some ways, smaller is better, making it easy to connect with each person individually. Plus, your readers can connect with the other readers and that's how community is formed.

Method #4 - Ask Them To Email You

At minimum, you should begin to develop direct email-based communication with your audience. This could be as simple as asking your audience to send you an email, or making it easy for them to do so. It might even be part of a blog contest or promotion The important step here is to keep the conversation going. Don't let it die after one email. Reply back, ask more questions, and invest some time in them. Help them wherever you can.

Method #5 - Host A Google+ Hangout

Google+ hangouts are a great way to bring people together, and more than likely you have several readers who already participate on this social network. Give you audience a reason to participate. Perhaps an incentive, like free advice on a topic, or helpful content, will increase attendance. Either way, keep it helpful and personal. Leave plenty of time for them to talk so that you can gather the feedback that you need.

Go Beyond The Greeting

With the advent of social media and the age of blogging, the voice that your audience requires has changed. The plastic marketing message that was so prevelent during the advertising age is no longer effective. It doesn't resonate with the people that you are trying to communicate with. You need to do something different, something more human, which is why you need to understand more about your audience than just their age.

Search Engine Optimization companies are making a fortune by doing the menial work that is overlooked by many designers. It is ridiculously easy to do most of the work done by most SEO companies, all you have to do is create good habits.

There are 9 main points you should focus on:

• Keywords
• URL Text
• Description, Meta tags
• Title tags
• Image Names
• ALT tags
• Heading tags
• Content
• Hyperlinks

The focus of these 8 steps is to load your pages with as many "keywords" as possible.

Keywords

Keywords are the most important aspect of good SEO, this is where you tell the Search Engines what your site is about. Search Engines use an algorithm to determine the "Keyword Density" of your site, this formula is:

Total Words ÷ Keywords= Keyword Density

Use this formula on your competitors web site and see how they score, then aim to beat that score.

Choose keywords that best relate to the information, products or services that you are offering. For instance, if I am designing a site about "Web Design", I want my site to include the words "Web Design" as many times as possible.

However, most people don't just search for just one word, they type phrases, so you should consider the phrases that best suit your sites target market. For example, if I am creating a site about "Web Design" in New Orleans, I would include "New Orleans web design" in my keywords. Another way around this is to not separate my keywords with commas, just use spaces, and the Search Engines will make the phrases for you. The most important thing to remember is that the content of each page is different, so only use keywords pertaining to that page.

URL Text

When you name a new page you have the option to call it anything you could possibly think of, why not se a keyword? After all, the URL address is the first things a search engine comes across when indexing your pages. You have to remember content doesn't come easy to everyone, so you gotta slip in your keywords when the process gives you an easy one.

Description Meta tags

These tags are dwindling in importance since Search Engines are now looking at content, but every little bit counts.

Optimize your meta tags to match your content, products, and services, and the Search Engines that still look at meta data will reward your efforts.

Title Tags

Title tags are the tags that tell the Search Engine the title, or formal description of the document or page. This is the word or phrase that is seen at the top of the browser window. The most important rule about title tags is, don't put anything in the title tags but keywords. Once again this is an easy time to slip in your keywords, so don't miss out.

Image Names

As I said before, content doesn't come easy to everyone, so slip in your keywords whenever possible, this applies to image names. If you are saving a picture of a guy working on a computer for your web design web site, don't call it "some_dude.jpg", call it "web_site_design.jpg". The Search engine will look at the code for the site and see the image pertains to the content of the site and this will be another relevant element on that particular page. You have to take the easy ones when you are given a chance.

ALT tags

Alt tags are keywords that you can attach to images, giving more weight to the image since Search Engines can't analyze the content of the image itself. Here is a chance to slip in more keywords without writing great content, use it.

Heading tags

Heading tags are associated with the bold font that leads into a section of text. Like this:

Your heading tags should only be keywords, and should be presented in the order that your Meta tags follow.

H1= first meta tag, H2= second meta tag...

Try to utilize all 6 heading tags on each page to ensure maximum page optimization.

Content

As every expert will tell you, "Content is King." Each web page should have at least 350 words on it, and the more the better, but keep in mind the formula for keyword density. You don't want to fill a page with 1500 words of jibba-jabba and only 5 keywords in it. Some people get hung-up on how browsers display text, and use images with text in them because they want a cool font, but browsers can't read the text embedded in images, so this content ads no weight to the page in a Search Engines eyes.

Linkbaiting is the new trend among high ranking sites. Linkbaiting means writing quality content, or articles that other web sites can display on their pages as long as they give credit, and a link to your site.

You don't have to be a vi or emac expert to write good web content, just be thoughtful of how you word things and incorporate your keywords.

Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks are text links to other pages on your site. The rules of SEO and hyperlinks are easy:

• Use hyperlinks so the Search Engine will have a text link to follow to the next page
• Don't use one word links, use long link phrases, preferably keyword phrases
• Use bullets, or some sort of small image that you can attach an ALT tag to, this will ad more importance to the link, and throw in a couple of free keywords for you.

A great startup called Conduit (http://www.Conduit.com) offers people the opportunity to create their own, personalized toolbar for FREE. Conduit has a wizard embedded within their website which takes you through the setup process step-by-step. It took about twenty minutes and once you're done, they create a link to your toolbar download site which you can then share through an email signature or through a click through download on your new networking site. There are a number of cool ways to tailor the toolbar... your branded search, create links to particular pages on your own site, add weather, a radio and so on to make sure its a value download for your customers.

5) Design Your Site with the Customer In Mind and Make Inviting Others Easy
If, like us, your marketing budget is measured by the quarters rattling around in your pocket, then do your site a favor and design it so the 'Invite Others' button is never far away. So find the best forums for your target customers, join and spend some time getting to know what subjects are being discussed. Give it a week or two then jump in and add some value... and make sure that your post includes your email and perhaps the web address. If it is valuable, then members may check out your new site...

One last thing, if there aren't any good groups with your target customers... consider creating your own... and make it it feeds your new networking site. Here's one I started and yes... I know it only has a few members... but its more links in the internet for your website which appears in your google or Alexa results: http://groups.google.com/group/Harvard_Entrepreneurs_Startups?lnk=oa&hl=en

9) Write to your Existing Members:
Do you have a few members? If so, email them occassionally (Not every day!) and remind them of the value of your site... perhaps highlight a particularly useful tool or feature of your website. Maybe reach out to some of the individual members and ask them if you can write about them joining the site, a person feature if you will. At the bottom of each of these emails... give them a few sentences (above for example) to send on to others they know. Stress how much you would appreciate their help and how important they are to you and your young business.

Directory submission is the process of submitting to the directories. There are a lot of different types of directories. Some directories require you to pay for listing while others don't. There are thousands of directories that allow free listing. The free listing option is the most popular choice among webmasters. With free listing option, you don't have to pay a cent to get your site listed on the directories.

When submitting to directories, you have to write a few titles and description. Preparing a variety of titles and descriptions allow you to prevent duplication problem. Duplicated titles and description can cause your listing to not get index by the search engine. In order for the listing to get indexed, you must write unique titles and description. The unique titles and description prevent the search engine from suspecting that the directory submission is performed purposely. It makes the directory submission process more natural. A simple design is much better than a cluttered one. You can rather call it as a professional design. A professional looking site has more chances of getting approved for Google Adsense program. Some useful elements of a professional design are:

Easy navigation.
Distraction-free colors.
An easily accessible search box.
Links to important pages like Privacy, Disclaimer, About Us, Archives, etc.
