To Hell and Back: The Cruel Pet Trade Exposed

For seven months, a PETA investigator went undercover at U.S. Global Exotics, Inc., (USGE) a massive international animal wholesale facility in Arlington, Texas. At the time, USGE was one of the nation's largest dealers of animals sold in pet stores all around the world.
PETA's investigation revealed that thousands of animals suffered horrible fates because they were denied the most basic necessities: food, water, space, air, humidity, veterinary care, and even a painless end to their misery. Continuous, cruel confinement to severely crowded and filthy enclosures compounded their suffering and resulted in the slow, painful deaths of countless animals.
Thanks to PETA's investigation, USGE's animal victims have been rescued, but other pet shops and dealers such as PETCO and PetSmart continue to exploit animals for money. Please take a look at the photos, watch the undercover video footage, and read more about the findings from this investigation, then help animals sold into the pet trade by calling on PetSmart and PETCO today to end the sale of animals at their stores.

Urge Coach House Gifts Stop Selling Frogs!

Last week, the Coach House Gifts store at the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis, California, received a shipment of 40 frogs for sale in ''EcoAquariums.'' A shipping blunder left the frogs to sit for an extra day--the ice packs melted, and as a result, 37 out of the 40 frogs perished. Two teenage girls had to sift through the dead frogs in order to find the three survivors, and the dead frogs were flushed down the toilet. Such things are not uncommon: During a PETA undercover investigation of Wild Creations, the group's investigator was told that approximately 180 frogs froze to death when Wild Creations employees failed to include heat packs with the shipment. The investigator also documented that Wild Creations shipped up to 100 ''replacement frogs'' to customers on a daily basis.

PETA's investigation also revealed unsanitary living conditions, starvation, and gross mishandling of frogs at Wild Creations' warehouse. Frogs were left to languish in stagnant water that was murky with feces and molted skin. Many frogs were so desperate for food that they chewed on each other's legs, causing wounds, infections, and, eventually, loss of limbs. Live frogs were left on the floor to die or--mistaken for dead--tossed aside, including into the trash, by employees who had received no training. Declaring Energy Independence

When our Founders poked their finger in the eye of an imperialistic colonial power in the 1700's and declared their independence, the success of a new nation built on the concept of freedom was far from certain. However, as we know, despite the long odds, the concept and our country have prevailed.

Similar long odds confront our nation today. Consider our national energy policies. As most North Carolinians know first hand, energy prices are gobbling up ever-larger slices of the family or business budget. With gas prices averaging about $3.50 a gallon last month, it can seem like we are at the mercy of the Middle Eastern petro-states that control so much of the world's oil production.

It need not be so.

Report: Rise in anti-malaria funding is paying off
New drugs, vaccines and technologies will be enlisted within a few years in the global fight against malaria as a result of the increase in funding for research of the disease since the 1990s, according to a report released Tuesday. In September, New York became the first state in the nation to begin requiring manufacturers of household cleaners to reveal the chemical ingredients in their products and any health risks they pose.

Studies have linked chemicals commonly lurking in household cleaners to asthma and reproductive abnormalities. But without chemical disclosure, it's impossible for consumers to tell the difference between risky and safe cleaners.

That's about to change. If New York's policy is implemented correctly, people may finally be able to determine which products to avoid if they want to minimize risks of asthma, nervous system damage, and reproductive harm.

This was a hard-fought victory, stemming from lots of public pressure and an Earthjustice lawsuit against four cleaning product companies.

And the fight isn't over. Household cleaner manufacturers -- including the four targeted in the lawsuit -- are bound to protest. The industry trade association is strong-arming its way into talks where they'll put pressure on the State to water down the disclosure requirements or delay implementation.

Will you take a moment to thank New York's environmental agency for standing strong in the face of industry pressure? If we're going to win meaningful protections from chemicals in cleaners, New York state officials need to know that they have you -- and tens of thousands of other people -- in their corner.

But the arms race is long since over, and it’s time we reduce the stockpiles and secure the materials before they fall into the wrong hands.

This past April, President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) which, if ratified by the U.S. Senate will reduce each country’s nuclear stockpile by a third, and open up both nations’ programs for more transparent inspections and verification.

Despite the historic opportunity, this treaty has been stalled in the Senate for 7 months....."

Atlantic bluefin tuna are remarkable creatures, growing up to 10 feet in length and more than 1,500 pounds, and capable of swimming across the Atlantic Ocean in just over a month. Harried by overfishing along the way, they enter the Gulf of Mexico to spawn, only to encounter longline fishermen targeting other species with thousands of hooks strung for miles behind fishing vessels.
Already threatened with extinction by the slaughter, the tuna faced a new enemy this spring in its vital Gulf spawning grounds—a lethal mix of oil and dispersants from the biggest spill in U.S. history. Given the decline they have endured over the past 30 years, Atlantic bluefin tuna could become extinct unless urgent measures are taken.

We must protect and effectively manage at least 25 percent of Earth's land and inland waters and 15 percent of marine ecosystems by 2020.

We can’t protect life without also protecting the places where it lives. Currently, only 12.9% of the world’s terrestrial areas are under formal protection. Less than 1% of the oceans are protected.

The attendees of this meeting have the power to take binding action to preserve life around the world.

Did you know the current law regulating toxic chemicals was passed in 1976? And it hasn't changed since, even though 20,000 new chemicals have come onto the market since then.

Death By Bullying: Another Teenage Suicide

I have so much to say about this particular type of thing... don't know where to begin.

First of all, my prayers and condolences go out to this young man's family.

Secondly, this issue seriously needs to be looked at by our schools.

Thirdly, parents need to learn to really listen to their kids = and when they say they're being bullied, PLEASE listen to them! And Please step in to help them.

And Most Importantly: Our children need to have a church family they can truly depend on. An extended family of sorts who will be there for them, help them and their family stand up to the bullying -- or the lack of assistance from the authorities. This bullying is UNnecessary - these deaths are UNnecessary... these victims need to know that LIFE can go on - and these things, too, shall pass. In a year or two or three...it will be over and many circumstances, even laughed about.
