After the last round of shots she screamed for 3-4 hours. She was inconsolable and not even nursing her would calm her down. When Danny got home, we were both crying. I called the nurse line because the excessive crying was not normal and was basically told that this was a good indication of my child's pain tolerance! Oh yeah, I was like say what? This is my third child and none have reacted this way. I also told her she needed to read her literature because excessive non-stop crying was a sign of a severe reaction! grrr..

Anyway, I had already made up my mind we would now delay shots and not take 3+ at a time! So, this time she got Roto and DTaP/HIB combo which resulted in only 1 shot. She has not cried at all! I told Dino (her ped) what happened last time and with the phone call. He laughed about the nurse not having much tact. He said the calls after 5 go to some nurses answering service in Chapel Hill. Dino thought she could have reacted to DTaP or even Prevnar. He also thought it could have been the way the injection was given and it was possible they hit bone. ugh....poor baby.

Dino is great though. There are some things I do differently from mainstream and he is pro natural living and I love it. He is very knowledgeable on natural products and such. I told him we'd be in Tuesday for a well child with my eczema child. He didn't recommend starting cereal (which is GREAT), but I wasn't going to start it anyway. I plan to do child led solids especially since it all went downhill with Ian once we started rice cereal!

Maddy is growing nicely. :-) She weighed 15 pounds 2 ounces and was 24 3/4 inches long (50-75 percentile for both).

We go back in a month for Prevnar.

Today is Ash Wednesday...

and the first day of Lent, what are you giving up? I have chosen to give up sugar and artificial sweeteners. Yes, I do know that there are things that have sugar in them, but I am talking along the lines of soft drinks, cakes, cookies, ice cream.......... And for those of you who know me, ice cream is my weakness so this will not be easy.

For those of you who don't know, here is the definition from http://wilstar.com/holidays/lent.htm

"Lent: What is it? Why is it?

The highlight of the year for Christians is Easter, the day when our Lord rose from the dead. Lent is a forty-day season of preparation for Easter. Lent always begins on a Wednesday, called Ash Wednesday.

Why 40 days? Because, Jesus fasted and was tempted in the wilderness for 40 days. Lent, then, is our time of fasting, prayer, temptation and repentance. Lent is not required anywhere in scriptures, but it has been a custom, which Christians have practiced for most of the last two thousand years.

In many languages, the word "Lent" actually means "fast." This is where the custom of giving up something for Lent originated.

However, just to confuse things, Lent is actually 46 days rather than 40 days. Why? Because the 40 days of Lent are supposed to be days of fasting, which means days of discipline and self-restraint. But Sunday, the Lord's Day, should never be a day of fasting, but a day of celebration! So each Sunday we suspend our Lenten disciplines and celebrate. Lent is 40 "fasting" days spread out over a total of 46 days beginning on Ash Wednesday.

The focus of Lent was always threefold:

It was a time to prepare new converts for baptism through intensive classes and instruction.

It was a time for long-standing Christians to review their lives and renew their commitment to Jesus Christ.

It was a time for backsliders to be restored to the faith.

In every case, it is a time for serious, disciplined self-examination, a time spent in intensive prayer and repentance before the cross of Calvary.

To represent the dark and serious business of Lent, one custom has been to strip the sanctuary of all flowers, candles, and colors during Lent. This custom helps us to turn inward and examine ourselves, even as it reminds us of the dark and colorless Sabbath day when Jesus lay dead in the tomb.

Put simply, Lent is a time to examine ourselves carefully. Here are some questions upon which you might pray and meditate during Lent:

Am I sharing gladly what I have with others, especially the stranger and the poor?

Do I have a gracious and patient attitude with others, especially those who irritate me?

Do I feel the power of connection to God and the church in corporate worship?

How is my devotional and prayer life progressing? Am I listening to God more and complaining less? Is it time for a change or a growth in my Bible study and prayer life?

What are the lurking sin problems, which still plague me?

Am I as thoughtful and forgiving of family as others, or do I take my frustrations out on them?

Do I speak up for the maligned and oppressed, or do I remain silent in order to remain popular?"

Snow in the Low Country!

It began last night about 6 pm and kept snowing through the night. This was the first snow in the Low Country since 1989!! The boys were SO excited!! This morning we woke up to about 5-6 inches of the white stuff. It was such a pretty site. The boys have made snow angels, thrown snow balls, made a snowman and eaten some snow cream. I am ready for it to go away now!! It is actually already melting and most will be gone today.
Here are some pictures:

Maddy was actually happy until Ian went to pat her head with a ton of snow on his gloves.
It seems like she was just born. She is definitely a joy and a happy baby most of the time.

Here are some things she is doing:

*rolling from tummy to back and back to tummy
*loves to grab things
*loves talking to her little red headed man on her exersaucer
*still loves to be naked
*still no teeth yet
*loves watching and smiling at her brothers
* pushes her chest up off the floor and gets her knees underneath her
*she was sleping 6-8 hours until the last 2 weeks when she was sick! Now she is back to every 3-4 hours so maybe she is teething!
Well, their "free kids meal", is not really a kids meal. At least my definition of a free kids meal is the exact same thing as a paid kids meal, including the bag/box and the toy. To my surprise, if you get a "free kids meal" it doesn't include the bag/box or the toy!!!! So how is that a "free kids meal"????? All that is, is a free burger, fries and drink. And someone tell me how you explain to your other child that they didn't get a toy??

I don't know if this is the norm across all McDonalds, but if it is then it is false advertising! They should not be saying it is a "free kids meal" because obviously my definition and theirs are very different! Shame on McDonalds!!!

You be the Judge....

Everyone is trying to figure out who Maddy looks like. Some say me, some say Danny and some say my Dad or maybe she is a mix. I don't have many pictures of Danny when he was little and I don't have any of me here with me around the same age. I was older in the pictures below.

I know for sure the dimple in her chin came from my side of the family. That is a very strong trait! Caleb has it, I have it and my Dad has it. She definitely has Danny's dimple. I have wondered where the tongue tie came from though! That is hereditary and no one in my immediate family had it.

You be the judge...

I asked him where my ears and arms were, but he claims they were too hard to draw. Then I had to ask him about the hair! Apparently he thinks mommy's hair sticks up all the time! However, I beg to differ! That ONLY happens when Ian twirls it! :)
Last week, Caleb celebrated his 100th day of school! It is so hard to believe he has been in school for that long already! This is what he said he'd buy if he had 100 dollars! Tell me if you can decipher it!
It is amazing the things that just pop into their mind. I thought I would share a few..

Caleb yesterday -
Caleb - Mom, we have 6 more weeks of winter because the Raccoon saw his shadow.
Me - The Raccoon?
Caleb - Or the Mole or whatever that animal is that comes out of the ground
Me - Did you forget it was the Groundhog? You have been talking about Groundhog day for the past week!
Caleb - <giggling>oh yeah, I knew it was some kind of animal

Ian a few weeks ago -
Ian - Mommy, why is your tummy still full?
Me - Because the house Maddy was in hasn't shrunk yet.
Ian - Well, why not? She is not in your tummy anymore.
Me - Yes, but it takes a while because she was in there for 9 months!
{geez, my kid's way of calling me FAT!}

My neice Abigail over Thanksgiving and Christmas -
She saw me nursing Maddy over Thanksgiving with the Hooter Hider cover on (yes, that IS what it is called!) She asked me what I was doing and I told her I was feeding the baby, but wasn't going to go into any detail since she wasn't my child. Her mom came over and told her I was feeding her with my boobies! She had a lot of questions and wanted to know how it all worked, but she finally said oh and walked inside. I thought that was that.

However, when I saw her over Christmas I found out she told our secret to her daycare.
Abby - I have a secret. Do you want to know?
Daycare - Sure
Abby - My baby, Maddy, she drinks milk from Aunt Karen's BOOBIES!
Daycare - {laughs, I am sure!}

Things that are going on here...

WOW! I can't believe I haven't posted since Maddy was born. Life is complete chaos the majority of the time. Between working, a new baby and taking the boys to their MANY actitivies there just hasn't been enough time to fit in a blog post! However, I DO need to do a better job at fitting it in.

Let's see where to begin....
Caleb is doing GREAT in school. He is reading way ahead of where he should be by the end of the year already. Not surprising at all since he is my smart kid. His writing has improved drastically and so has his coloring much to my surprise! Caleb has never been into anything artistic!

Ian is well Ian. Still loves climbing in mommy's lap and holding her hair. :-) He has done really well with Mrs. Patty since we moved him to Oakbrook in August. It is amazing the difference a GOOD teacher makes! Not everyone is cut out for teaching!! I know I am not! ;) We are still struggling with his eczema. It is at bay for the moment, but I know it is only a matter of time before it rears its ugly head again! :(

Maddy is 16 weeks old as of Monday! Where did my newborn go?? She amazes me every day. Her mobility so early surpasses the boys at her age. She is rolling from back to tummy and tummy to back. Although she doesn't always remember the tummy to back thing. She is getting her knees up under her and trying to scoot. It is funny. She is a happy baby most of the time unless she is hungry or sleepy. She is sleeping anywhere from 6-8.5 hours at night. She still nurses about every 2-3 hours during the day and likes to cluster feed at night before bed. I am still amazed that she sleeps for that long!

Madelyn's Birth Story

Madelyn Christine was born 10/12/09 @ 7:23am. She was 7 lbs 7 oz, 21 inches long and head measured 13.5 cm. Danny and I had this name picked out since we were first pregnant with Caleb and it was only fitting that she get this name. She was also named after my grandmother.

I woke up Sunday morning and kept thinking she's coming soon. I packed and got most everything ready. I cleaned out the garage while Danny and the boys washed the boat. Finally, around 8 pm I started having contractions. I just knew she was going to make me labor all night long!!!!! The boys were easy on me!

I got in the shower to see if the contractions would stop and they didn't. I called my friend Jennifer to let her know we may end up at the hospital since she was nice enough to come over and watch the boys! I tried to lay down thinking I could sleep through it. Yeah right! I wish! Finally about midnight, they were 5-7 minutes apart and since this was my 3rd baby I went ahead and called my Midwife on call. After all, they say the 3rd one comes really fast!

Bridget was the midwife on call. Thank goodness. There was one at the practice I was avoiding and the midwife I'd seen throughout my pregnancy was oncall on Monday. Bridget told me to come on so we called Jen and loaded up the car. We were on our way about 12:30 am! I got there and they didn't want to admit me until I was checked and monitored. At that point my contractions were back to all over the place so Bridget said I could stay or go home. It was up to me. Since Jen was with the boys, I figured I'd stay. I didn't want to have to come back an hour or so later. I was 4 cm dilated when I was checked at 1:30 am. My labor and delivery nurse was horrible! She was the one who checked me and I have NEVER had it hurt so badly!!!!!! I cussed her every time she walked out of the room after checking me!

I got on the birthing ball and rocked in the chair and about 3:30 she checked me again and I was 6 cm dilated. Again, very painful. It was obvious this nurse didn't know what she was doing. I even told her that her checking me hurt worse than the contractions!!!!!!!

At that point, they admitted. I got into the tub since my contractions were consistent and were hurting like hell. I can't really say it eased them, but it was a change. I stayed there for a couple of hours or so before I had to be put on the monitors to check the contraction and heart rate. I also got checked again and around 5:30 I was about 8 cm dilated and was in quite a bit of pain at that point. It was taking forever and I was so sleepy!!!!!!

I was really starting to feel a lot of pressure by about 6:40ish. Nurse came in and asked me if I wanted her to check me again and I said NO!!!! I couldn't take her checking me again. No way in hell. I think she got the point because she asked if I wanted Bridget to come check me and I said yes that would be great!

Bridget apparently talked to Carrie before she came in and asked if I could hold out for 10 minutes until Carrie could get there since I had seen her the entire pregnancy and I told her I'd try. I mean I can't really control it at this point!!

I managed somehow. Carrie came in and checked me which by the way didn't hurt at all. I was 9 cm and my water was bulging. She knew I didn't want to augment labor in any way, so she asked if I wanted her to break it and I said YES! No hesitation there. It had been a long night and I wanted her OUT! Carrie broke my water and it was within a matter of minutes I was feeling the urge to push.

I was so hot and was telling them to fan me. Danny would start fanning me and then I'd start yelling at him to give me his hand. I needed something to squeeze. The last few minutes were rough. I was sorta waiting to see if I needed to push and waiting to see if I was going to get some guidance so I didn't rip, but I didn't get any. I just got that overwhelming urge to push and they couldn't get my legs in the stir ups fast enough. My left leg went up, but my right one was not going. I was having a calf muscle cramp mid contraction and trying to push. They were yelling at me to get my leg up and I am saying between gritted teeth that it isn't going up because of a leg cramp. Finally, I got it up and I don't think I even pushed 3 times and she was out. I was exhausted.

Carrie laid her on my chest and the first thing I said was..."She has hair!" I was so surprised by that. I just knew she wouldn't. Her umbilical cord was in a knot. Carrie said that was rare. It was cool looking.

Danny said I turned into the exorcist at the end and I am sure I did. It was rough, but I got the birth I wanted. I think next time I should have drank more water to prevent those cramps!!!!

I sure thought my 3rd birth would be quick, but it definitely wasn't! It was as long as the first. I think if my water had broken sooner it would have been much faster!!

Birth Plan

Since this is my 3rd birth experience, I really wanted this one to be a birth just like I wanted it. With Caleb, I had a horrible experience with an epidural and swore I'd never have one again unless I had to have an emergency c-section. With Ian, I had to be induced with pitocin due to high blood pressure, but fortunately I was in active labor by the time I got to the hospital. I did not get an epidural, but I did get a shot of nubane.

This time I didn't want any drugs. I didn't want to be hooked up and monitored and be forced to stay on my back.

I want:
• an unmedicated, intervention-free labor and vaginal delivery
• to ask for pain medication three times before being offered any (until after the baby is born)
• the lowest possible dose of pain medication if I ask for it 3 times
• pain medication to be sewn up if I tear (local anesthetic)
• to breastfeed shortly after birth
• to have my husband present at all times
• labor in a variety of positions, including standing, squatting, sitting, lying, in a tub or in a shower, birthing ball
• my husband to be able to lie/sit with me in the bed or get into the tub with me
• walk freely during labor
• to eat and drink as I choose during labor
• to keep vaginal exams to a minimum
• to be an active member of any decision-making during the labor and delivery
• to be allowed to try changing position and other natural methods (walking, nipple stimulation) before pitocin is administered to augment labor
• to have the amniotic membrane ruptured before drugs are used to augment labor
• to protect my perineum - I am practicing ahead of time by squatting, doing Kegel exercises, and perineal massage
• guidance in when to push and when to stop pushing so the perineum can stretch
• to tear rather than have an episiotomy
• to wait until I feel the urge to push before beginning the pushing phase, even if I am fully dilated, and assuming the baby is not in distress
• to have the baby placed on my stomach/chest immediately after delivery and to wait for cord to stop pulsating.
• to hold the baby while I deliver the placenta and any tissue repairs are made
• to hold the baby rather than have (him/her) placed under heat lamps
• to see the placenta after it is delivered
• to have photos taken during the labor and delivery
• my husband to cut the umbilical cord once it has stopped pulsating
• to room-in with the baby
• to leave as soon as possible after the birth

I do no want:
• to be offered pain medication until after the birth
• to have a C-section except as a last result to save my life and/or the life of the baby
• an episiotomy
• an enema
• IV fluids unless I become very dehydrated
• continuous fetal monitoring unless the baby is in danger
• internal fetal monitoring unless the baby is in danger
• a bottle or pacifier to be given to the baby
• the baby taken to the nursery at anytime
• to be given the Rubella booster after delivery. I would prefer to wait until 6 weeks postpartum to have blood tested again to see if I am still showing no immunity.

Awakened to a 3.2 Earthquake...

This morning I was up about 6:35 am with my bladder calling my name. I got up again for the 500th time and laid back in bed. As soon as I laid back down, I heard a boom and felt some shaking. The shaking only last 5-10 seconds. At first, I thought maybe it was an airplane since the airport isn't too far away, but then as I lay there I thought that had to have been another earthquake.

When I finally got out of bed, I looked it up and sure enough it was! It was less than 6 miles from me! This is the second one I have felt, but at least the 4th or 5th since we have been here!
Life has definitely gotten crazy the last few weeks. Between visitors, cleaning out closets and preparing for baby there hasn't been time for much else.

Now that school has started, it has been an even bigger adjustment especially for Mommy! Anyone who knows me knows I love my sleep and this 6 am stuff is for the roosters!!!!

Caleb is adjusting in Kindergarten and at the YMCA in his new routines. He is starting Football practice tonight.

Ian started his new preschool yesterday and so far it is SO much better than The Sunshine House!!! His teacher at Oakbrook CDC has been there for 13 years which is awesome considering Ian has been through 2 full time and at least 3 part time teachers at Sunshine House in the last 6 months!!

I am 32 weeks today. It is hard to believe I have only 8 weeks left. If I even make it that far! The heat definitely makes this pregnancy worse!!!! I have been begging Danny to let me go to one of his stores and sit in the beer coolers!!! Instead, the other day I walked out of the house and got in the truck. He comes out thinking I am mad or something and wanted to know where I was going. I told him I was HOT and trying to get cooled off!! Sleeping is nearly non-existent and I swear she is already 10 lbs! She kicks MUCH harder than the boys ever did!

Anyway, I will be going back to catch up and post pics of things we have had going on!

Caleb's First Day of Kindergarten

Today was Caleb's first day of Kindergarten! He was SO excited he was up before the alarm went off at 6am. He couldn't even eat breakfast and was rushing us all out of the house! Traffic was insane! I kept quizzing him on the way to school. What is your teacher's name? Where is your milk money? What bus do you get on after school? Danny finally told me to chill out and Caleb responded by saying, "Mommy is just trying to make sure I know what I am supposed to do." hahaha :)

We let him show us where his classroom was to make sure he remembered since we would just be dropping him off and not walking him in later in the week. He did a great job and I managed to keep in the tears. A few slipped on the way out, but I am SO exited for this next chapter in his life!!

My good friend Brooke actually taught me a few years ago while Dad was having his kidney removed at Duke. She was knitting a scarf and I have to say I had a really hard time trying it. I was adding stitches right and left and could NOT tie a slip knot. And yes, I was a Girl Scout!

Here is the first thing I knitted using a pattern. It is a wool soaker. I picked the color before I knew we were having a girl, plus I knew this was practice. You can see where I grafted it, but I didn't think I did that bad for a first timer.

I have also started working on a pair of longies. This yarn was also picked prior to knowing it was a girl. Here is the progress so far.

I'm older and wiser. haha... and I know that if my baby had something that could be cured in utero I would absolutely do everything possible to make sure that happened.

The fluid measured 1.6 which was normal. Anything over 3.5 is an automatic risk. I had my blood drawn too and will have it drawn again in 2 weeks. They plug it into a formula and that would show either positive or negative.

It was so nice to see the baby again. The heart rate was 167 and I am measuring a week early this time...imagine that.

Enjoy!
It was nice seeing the kids play together. Ian was obsessed with the pool and got mad when we made him put his life jacket on. Caleb had fun playing with his older cousin Riley. He was definitely a tag a long!! I love spending time with my nieces! I wasn't really feeling well that weekend so I didn't take as many pictures as I normally do.
She decided to change my due date based on the ultrasound since it was a week off. So now, instead of 10/13 it is 10/20.

I didn't get to hear the heartbeat today. The baby just wasn't cooperating.I told my midwife I certainly wasn't worried. There was definitely no doubt I was pregnant.

Good news for me is that I have lost 4 lbs in the last 4 weeks! No surprise though since puking seems to be at the top of my daily activities. Luckily, it seems to be about every other day. Phenergan is a lifesaver.
