We’re getting ready to head South. This time it’s Rio de Janeiro! Our tradition is to release what we call our “Pre-Trip” list, of secret ‘in the know’ lunch and dinner spots, before we add them to our guidebooks . It’s our way of saying thank you to the peeps that follow us.

Note: This list is the exact list that we will use when we’re in Rio. It’s not fancy (or frankly well written), rather just a compilation of the hottest spots we could find! Enjoy!

LUNCH SPOTS:

Forneria- A perfect lunch destination for Ipanema shoppers. In the tastefully underdone, concrete-floored space, genial young staffers serve Italian standards both traditional (pizza alla Margherita) and adventurous (tramezzini with salmon tartare). The newest cool restaurant from Grupo Fasano that also owns Gero, the best restaurant in town. This is younger and more hip than Gero. Beautiful people, nice music and atmosphere, open kitchen. Wood oven sandwiches, carpaccios , salads and amazing desserts.

Cocinelle Bistro- Offering visitors savory traditional French dishes, creatively prepared by Japanese chef Madame Coccinelle, in a relaxed atmosphere. A spacious yet cozy place decorated as a modern French bistro with tones of Japanese design throughout. Yves de Roquemaurel, a Parisian restaurateur, and Madame Coccinelle, a Japanese-born internationally trained chef, draw from their diverse backgrounds to create a dining experience that pushes the concept of modern French cuisine. Coccinelle Bistro- A new modern French bistro in the oldest street of Rio de Janeiro, Travessa do Comercio (Arco do Teles). The menu offers casual french cuisine in a casual, rustic/chic atmosphere. The chef, Maya, is Japanese, and she has a good knowledge of French bistro fare, which she chose to present in a Japanese bento style. Everyday there are 3 suggestions of bentos (appetizer, main course, side dish) with prices between R$ 28 and R$ 32, and a selection of homemade traditional deserts (creme caramel, tarte tatin, chocolate mousse etc…).

Zuka- The restaurant darling of the fashionable Leblon neighborhood, Zuka does Brazilian fusion with a foodie flair. Cast in an architectural dining room with crisp white resin chairs, cement walls and butcher block tables. Located in Rio’s posh Leblon neighborhood.

Alessandro and Frederico- Thin crust pizza fired up by a wood burning oven and an impressive wine cellar draws a chic, jet setting crowd to this stylish two-story restaurant. Walking into the Confeitaria Colombo is like stepping back in time. Belgian mirrors, curved glass cabinets and Italian marble counters set the scene of an early 20th-century café where Rio’s high society took afternoon tea. The upstairs gallery, beneath the glass roof has the best view and a nice buffet lunch is served there. Feijoada (meat and bean stew) buffet is served on Friday. À la carte meals are also available. No dinner. Closed Sunday.

Confiteria Colombo- Go back in time to Rio’s Belle Epoque. Decorated in the style of Rio’s Belle Epoque, this historic building is a definite must see for any tourist. The Brazilian/Portuguese lunch buffet and snack bar feature delectable favorites from both sides of the Atlantic.

Felice Cafe- Located one block away from Ipanema beach and General Osorio plaza, where the hippie market takes place on Sundays, Felice Cafe is a great alternative for a light meal. The atmosphere is casual – a two-story house with a small terrace. They have a great selection of breakfast items, salads, paninis, fruit juices, smoothies and… ice creams… Oh the ice creams! Treat yourself to one because they are their specialty – homemade and really good! Prices are reasonable. Overall, a lovely experience!

Salpicado- if you are looking for a fantastic little spot for a prix-fixe lunch, Salpicado is the place to go. It is located in the Quartier Ipanema building on the corner of Visconde de Piraja and Maria Quiteria. They are only open for lunch and have some of the freshest food and wonderful included deserts. Go on Wednesday and their desert is “sonho de bombom”, which literally translated in English is “chocolate candy dream”. Ivenette is the owner, manager and her wait staff is friendly, helpful and not bad-looking either!!! The price is around US$13.00 and worth every penny.

Oro Restaurant- Felipe Bronze, an experienced chef trained at the CIA, Cullinary Institute of America, is making very modern food helped by some chemical experience as Ferran Adria has offered at EL BULLI, the famous one hour driving from Barcelona restaurant. If you like surprises when you go to dine with your wife or husband try ORO. They are open only for dinners and it’s recommended to make reservations.

Brigitte’s Cafe Rio- In keeping with its illustrious siblings the design is clean and bright by day, more atmospheric and even a little Mediterranean by night, with a subtle bar-restaurant division making for a different eating or drinking experience depending on the mood.

Market Ipanema- YUM, this place is tucked away in busy Ipanema, that alone makes it a nice reprieve from the bustling streets. The indoor/ outdoor feel, the wonderful food, and people watching are top-notch. There are great juice (sucos) & smoothie options. The food is diverse, plentiful, and tasty.

DINNER SPOTS:

CT Boucherie- Superb food and service. Good wine. It is recommended to have a reservation, because the restaurant is always full. The meat is really wonderful! Side dishes are served as a buffet at your table and are delicious. #1 on Trip Advisor.

ZaZa Bistro- The food is great with very nice flavors. We tried several things and liked everything. The staff is also very friendly. But go early (they only accept reservations via site) and if you don’t have local bank card or MasterCard take money with you.

Aprazivel- Go to Aprazivel earlier and enjoy Bar dos Descasados, in Santa Teresa Hotel. Good atmosphere and view. This restaurant is located high above Rio literally in the trees (some of the tables are in a treehouse). In addition to the great location, the food is amazing. The hearts of palm and the octopus are both must-haves.

Oui Oui- Tapas has finally made it to Rio at Oui Oui, which has created a wonderful menu of 20 small dishes that can be combined into a very satisfying meal. Start off with a refreshing Moranguito cocktail (sparkling wine, strawberries, and mint) and a plate of spring rolls stuffed with fresh figs and shredded duck.

Iraja Gastro- After the ‘70s-inspired lounge-come-waiting area, complete with arty books and an almost poetic drinks menu, the brighter, palm-lined wall of the main room exudes a more typical, modern carioca warmth. Next door, the kitchen neighbors a ‘chef’s table’, an eight-person dining experience that takes care of the serious business of bringing chef Pedro Artagão (formerly of MAM’s slick Laguiole restaurant) and diner closer together for those with the forward planning to book the popular spot.

Gero - Gero may be the best Italian restaurant in Rio. It is always full and always expensive, but each single dish is delectable. The movers, shakers and beautiful people are here too.

Do you want your life to be different? Have you ever wanted to try something just for the hell of it? Ya know, do something with no end game other than fun?

We all have a still, small voice within that’s telling us to do something. The problem is we tend to rationalize things when we hear it. For example, when I hear great DJ’s play, I get super inspired. That voice calls out to me and says, “go learn how to DJ for yourself”.

I could very easily rationalize and say, “I’m 46 years old; that’s crazy!” But, I’ve trained myself to listen and take action on that voice. I’ve always wanted to understand what all those buttons do! So this month I decided to enroll in DJ classes (more on that later)!

A random story….

I have a buddy that worked his tail off to get his degree as a Doctor. After his third year of practice, he started getting these intense headaches. He shrugged them off and attributed them to stress and no sleep. But as time went on they got worse and he found himself in a neurologist’s office reviewing his brain MRI.

The news wasn’t great. He had a brain tumor. It was one of those moments where the world stopped. As you could imagine, it caused huge introspection into his life. He was told that as long as the tumor doesn’t grow he could expect to live a long life. Talk about mixed news!

Anyhoooo …..

He went back to work the following Monday. Everything was all good except for one small thing. He hated his job! It really just wasn’t for him.

I asked him what he would absolutely love to do with his life. He said, “I would love to play guitar and sing anywhere they’ll let me”.

Who knew!

Ok, it’s at this moment where the rubber meets the road. Should he rationalize and dismiss the idea, because he went to school for all those years, has a family to provide for or you fill in the blank.

Update…..

Well, that was 10 years ago. I’m happy to report that my Doctor friend has exactly the life he’s always dreamed of. He regularly plays guitar and sings to packed houses, has three amazing CD’s and a ton of raving fans that follow him from gig to gig.

Is the tumor still there? Yep. It’ no better and it’s no worse. Here’s what I think is important. He made a decision to find a way to change his circumstances.

What about you? What’s that still, small voice inside you saying (screaming)?

3 Reasons Why You Should Live Your Passion

1. You ain’t getting any younger!
Time passes by so damn quickly! If you ignore what you’re inspired to do for too long it will rust and likely go away. Don’t let that happen!

2. Someone else is doing it, why not you?
I often here people say things like “no one will pay me to do that”. Ask yourself this question “is there anyone doing what you would love to do and getting paid for it”? Of course there is! Start slow and take daily action on it.

3. The world needs more people doing things that light the up!
Imagine a world filled with people who are doing what they love to do? Ever hang out with someone that’s crazy passionate about what they’re doing? It’s infectious right?

As my boy, Tony Robbins, says, “Live Your Life With Passion!”.

A question we get asked pretty often is…”Should we go to Mykonos or Ibiza”? There seems to be some sort of inter island rivalry. In fact, Mykonos and Ibiza both sell T-shirts that say one f***s the other (see pic above). So, this year Kim and I decided to do both islands back to back and see which we liked better.

Here’s a quick video of both islands to give you a feel for them…

I’ll cut to the chase. Kim and I personally like Mykonos better!

Let’s talk a little about Ibiza first…

Ibiza

Interestingly, Ibiza is way prettier than I thought in some areas and way dirtier than I thought in others. As many of you probably know Ibiza is a CRAZY party spot. I mean NON STOP F***N partying. It never, ever, ever, ends! It’s like some sort of science experiment to see how long you could go without sleep. It’s totally over the top nuts!

Ok that said…

I DO however think it’s totally worth it to go to Ibiza (and I would go again). You just have to know what you’re getting into. Ibiza is mostly 20 something doing drugs and partying until they drop. The hospitals literally set up IV drips outside clubs to help over indulgers back on their feet.

Ibiza is a total electronic music town. There are DJ’s EVERYWHERE! You’ll find DJ’s in restaurants, grocery stores and probably under your sink in your bathroom. They really are everywhere! I personally think that’s a good thing. I love it! Ibiza scores the biggest headlining DJ’s in the world. We saw David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, and Avicci while we were there. They were all amazing shows and totally worth seeing.

So why is Mykonos better you’re probably asking?

OK…Here’s the thing… other than the partying…I didn’t find Ibiza to be as beautiful as Mykonos….or have as much to offer like great restaurants and fantastic culture.

Yes, Ibiza is very pretty in spots. For example, I thought the Blue Marlin beach club was gorgeous. Other than a few spots here and there I just didn’t it think it was as beautiful as Mykonos. I know there are beautiful outlying spots like Formentera but we only stayed in Ibiza proper so I can’t really comment on that.

We stayed at the Ushuaia hotel. The Ushuaia is kind of like a hotel and a night club had a baby. If you want to see more of what the Ushuaia looks like (and some really funny videos from our trip) subscribe to our video podcast HERE.

Here’s the dealio with the The Ushuaia. The hotel has headlining DJ’s outside your room from 5pm to midnight – 7 days per week! It definitely takes some getting used to. Having 2000 ravers outside your door every night until midnight is insane!

In fact, here’s a great video of a guy walking out of his room in his bathrobe to join the party.

But, this my friends is Ibiza! Please don’t get me wrong. We LOVED Ibiza and WILL be back for sure. All in all Ibiza is a VERY close second to Mykonos. However- for my Euro- Mykonos definatly wins!

Now….let’s talk a bit about Mykonos.

Mykonos

Mykonos has all of the above positives that Ibiza does AND soooooo much more! For example, if you want to chill there are tons of cool sexy beaches to lay your head. If you’re a foodie there are plenty of amazing restaurants. If you want to experience real (Greek) culture it’s all there. If you love headlining DJ’s there are more than you’ll have time or energy to see.

There is just that intangible thing that you can’t put your finger on with Mykonos….well….it’s the Greek people….they are amazingly warm loving and kind….even in the midst of the crazy economic crisis that they are in.

Here’s what I mean…

The hotel we stay in is called The Andronikos hotel. It’s run by Marco Andronikos and Elena Alexandri. These two know how to run a hotel! Here’s a view from my room….

I can not say enough good things about this place (my full review will be coming next week). The Andronikos hotel has this perfect blend making you feel like you’re part of an amazing Greek family and staying in a hip hotel with real (not manufactured) soul.

Our friends, Elsa and Gianni, of Mykonos Exclusive, turned us on to this place. Elsa and Gianni are the King and Queen of Mykonos. They know everything and everybody. They have the key to the island and can open doors for you that you never even knew existed. If you want to contact them just here.

I’m going to save what I have to say about the Andronikos hotel until I write my full review next week. Let’s just say I just booked three weeks for next next summer!

Honestly, whether you choose to go to Mykonos or Ibiza you WILL have an amazing time. There’s no doubt about that. If you must choose between the two islands I say Opa! Go to Mykonos!

Wanted to update you on a few cool things going on up in here at Jet Set Life’s hizzle!

As many of you already know, Kim and I created Jet Set Body with the intention of giving people every single thing we do in our personal workout and diet program. The problem for some people was that if they hadn’t worked out in a while it was just too advanced. Which was NOT a good thing!

We realized that Jet Set Body was ACTUALLY for people that ARE already working out, but just not getting the results that they wanted. So, we had to figure out a way to help the other half of the people that haven’t been to the gym for while.

Annnnnnndddddddd…… drum roll please!

Introducing Jet Set Body Light
We created a “Light” version of Jet Set Body and called it, Jet Set Body Light! Genious right? We were able to keep all the tips, tricks and strategies to get you lean fast without the super high intensity of a bawlz to the walls workout and slightly more intense nutrition plan. Don’t get me wrong, the diet is tight and the workout is intense, it just won’t KILL you dead if you haven’t been working out!

Are you ready for this?
To celebrate the launch of Jet Set Body Light we are going to offer it for $147 bucks! (Regular price will be $197)

When will it be available?
We will be launching Jet Set Body Light on July 17th at 9 am EST.

The ONLY way to get special pricing
There is only ONE (UNO) way to get this special price and that’s to add your name to our early bird list. Just click on the link below.

Random Stuff
We’re crazy passionate about this fitness stuff! Soooooo….we decided to start a Jet Set Body Podcast (as soon as iTunes gives us the approval). We’ll send you a message when the first episode one is ready.

The electronic dance scene has taken the world by storm and is causing my fellow Jet Setters around the world to jump (literally) for joy. But, what do you really know about this music? Confession: I didn’t know the difference between a dub step and a porch step. Apparently, there is a whole new world out there which is waiting to be embraced!

Let’s start with a quick video of me in- ummmm – action at a DJ Tiesto concert last week. Wanna put a smile on your face? Watch at minute 1:02 for a good time.

Wanna know how much Tiesto gets for a 3 hour set? How about over 100k! Is he worth it? Hells yeah! Just look at me dancing with the crazy girl in the video above (she’s actually one of my good friends Natalie:).

Why do I even care about this (I hear you quietly saying to yourself)? Great question! Until you’ve partied (in the VIP section only) with some of these world famous DJ’s, your just not gonna get it. But, let’s see if we can shed some light on this glow stick world.

Random quiz (only take this quiz if you’re over 30 and live in America)

1. What does EDM mean?

2. Who’s Avicci?

3. What’s a Swedish House Mafia?

OK here are the answers…..

1. EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music and rapidly becoming the most popular form of music in the world.

2. Avicci is the hottest DJ in the world who has people like Madonna introducing his sets.

3. Swedish House Mafia is a group of 3 DJ’s who just sold out Madison Square Garden.

Most countries have figured out how to celebrate life in a big way. But, in America not so much. It’s not unusual for Kim and I to be in South America and see 3 year old’s awake at a party at midnight doing Salsa with their parents. It’s also not that unusual to see 65 year old couples partying to DJ’s in the South of France. The world ‘gets’ that life is soooooo frikin’ short and that we need to let loose and live it!

Twenty year old’s in America actually do get this. In fact, last month there was an electronic music festival in Miami called the Ultra Music Festival, which had 160,000 people, mostly 20 somethings, partying for 3 days.

Would you have partied with them?

Do you think you’re too old for this stuff? If yes, why? I promise you it’s totally in your attitude. If you feel that your too old- well then you are. If you don’t, well then you aren’t. It’s really as simple as that. For example, Tiesto is 43 and David Guetta 44. Age hasn’t affected their street cred one bit!

O.k., my Jet Setter friend. Are you ready to grab this glow stick world by the ba**s? Well, let’s get you ready. Here’s a screen shot of my iPhone with 10 apps that I use to get me dialed in to the latest electronic dance music. You’ll be fist pumping in Ibiza before you know it!

Here’s a screen shot of my iPhone and how I use each app:

4. Slacker – Way better than Pandora, because it allows you to select 1 artist and have it play ONLY their songs.
5. Fit Radio – Hands down the best app to work out with.
6. Tune In Radio – This allows you to receive just about every major radio station in the world. I use it to listen to the BBC’s “Radio 1″ channel, which has fantastic dance music.
7. DI Radio- It has every sub-set of electronic music that you can imagine from Lounge to Dub Step (did you learn what that means yet?).
8. Tiesto – Tiesto does a weekly podcast and if you pay for the premium membership you get member only music.
9. Ibiza Sonica – This comes live from a radio station in Ibiza that plays chill electronic music to relax to. It’s awesome.
10. Sound Cloud – This is an app that allows DJ’s to showcase their music. If there is a particular DJ that you like you’ll probably find a lot of their free mixes on here.

Since working out is an insane passion of mine. Ahem…shameles plug for our workout program Jet Set Body. I want to expand a bit more on how to amp up your workout.

Most people take their iPod to the gym with them and listen to one of their playlists. For me, the problem with that strategy is that each song fades out and and you have to wait for the next song to begin again. May not seem like a big deal, but I promise you that it interferes with the rhythm and pacing of your workout. Fortunately, their is a solution to this problem. It’s called Fit Radio. Our friends over at Fit Radio have blended the world of DJ sets and working out in a very beautiful and perfect way.

My goal with this post is to share with you a new world that I have completely embraced for so many reasons. The biggest reason is that it’s just a flat out party that you won’t want to end And let’s be honest, the girls who are into this kinda music, are pretty easy on the eyes…

This summer Kim and I are headed to Ibiza (as well as Mykonos). Thanks to many friends (in all the right paces), we’ve put together our “Ibiza Pre-Trip List”.

This is literally the list that Kim and I will use while in Ibiza. This list may be amazing and it may suck. We never know until we get there. The sources that we got this list from are super reliable and it will likely be amazing.

You should also note that this is a very “cut and paste” kind of a thing. Don’t read this as an actual blog post. It’s more of snippets on different things to do in Ibiza.

Hope it helps!

DINNER

Jockey Club A big hotspot is the Jockey Club restaurant at Ses Salines (Las Salinas) beach, which is actually a National Park. Most of your a-list euro celebs, athletes, etc., will be hanging out here.

La Casita For the best seafood I’d probably recommend La Casita. Yes, it is frequented by lots of Germans, but then again, so is the whole island. It’s almost an institution, been there for over 30 years. Food is fresh and quality is good.

Riax Baixas Maybe if you’re near San Antonio you can stop there.

Villa Mercedez Or if you want something more cozy, romantic, soft music atmosphere check out Villa Mercedes. It’s really one of the more “cuter” establishments in the area.

Alfredo’s If you want local food go to Alfredo’s. Alfredo’s is probably one of the oldest on the island. It’s where you’d go to try Balearic and Ibizan food/wine. If you’ve never tried Balearic wine, try some (if you can try any from Mallorca’s Binissalem DO), but if you don’t like local food, then don’t go here! =) Doesn’t it bug you when people go to try local cuisine, then afterwards complain like it’s weird or disgusting or not like what they’re used to? They do have some regular Spanish dishes like paella, too, and other local stuff like salted cod and other seafood dishes.

S’Ametller If you’re in Ibiza town one day eat at Restaurant s’Ametller. It’s inexpensive, but good. All around good value for what you get.

La Brasa Very nice private, garden setting, good food, semi-traditional, semi modern-Mediterranean.

El Ayoun (It’s Moroccan).Very trendy, but also very Mediterranean/North African chic. It’s definatly a who’s who. Off one of those random interior highways that seclude many a great Ibiza restaurant, El Ayoun come after a short drive from the main town and to a grand entrance flanked by a tropical garden and double-wide hand carved doors that rise 10-feet. Inside, a grand illusion of arched doorways with ceiling relief leads to a series of grand drawing rooms that contain a champagne lounge, formal dining room and expansive terrace that’s one of the most formal in Ibiza. Like a Moroccan version of KM5, but with far better food, the space at times feels a bit over the top with its elaborate tabletops, ornate chandeliers with crystal bedazzling and gold-stripped fireplaces that do happen come in handy during colder shoulder month. But on a hot summer night or perfect full moon, few Ibiza restaurants offer as much wow-factor even after all these years as El Ayoun.

El Lio Pascha’s outdoor restaurant cabaret that’s on the water and designed after a Japanese Robata grill. Book the second seating.

KM5 One of Ibiza’s most unique and glamorous party destinations. Located along a rural path off the road to Saint Josef, you’ll likely get lost the first time, you’ll arrive to a bohemian party compound of sprawling tents, canopies containing Moroccan-theme lounges and central courtyard strewn with poufs and pillowed daybeds.

Originally a local art gallery with rotating exhibitions, KM5 eventually morphed into a fashionable lounge and bar for hip locals and in-the-know visitors. Every year unveils a new upgrade including a gourmet restaurant with organic and sustainable cuisine and small nightclub that roars with private parties and events from April to October. In the middle of it all in an open-air pavilion elaborately decorated in hammocks and cushions where casual conversations often end in cuddling and smooching by 4am. Boho supper club and dance lounge in middle Ibiza offers a hip summertime alternative to the sweaty boom and bass of Ibiza’s well-known nightclubs.

Las Dos Lunas Las Dos Lunas or two moons is a lush oasis of sweet scented bourgenvilla and vines and has long been a no go zone for photographers hoping to snap Leonardo DiCaprio or Julia Roberts. The attraction is the magic of the place and charismatic Italian fashion guru owner, Massimo Lucarini, who charms the clients with flattery. Secluded, romantic and fantastic service and cuisine from the homemade bread and foccacia to the chocolate mousse covered in fresh berries and home-made ice cream.

El Olivo Located within the confines of the Ibiza fortressed walls, El Olivo is an exception to the Ibiza rule of never eating in the Dalt. One of the island’s more stylish dining rooms offers a crisp white awning and elegant terrace eatery that’s one of the toughest reservations of the summer season. The L-shaped outdoor space occupies one of the walled town’s most prized pieces of real estate arranged in stylish rattan chairs and always-sexy crowd of dressy visitors and locals. Inside, a far more intimate dining experience offers candlelight and romance in lieu of people watching as a flirty staff works the early evening cocktail crowd and late dinner seating as if visiting with long-time friends.

Owners, Frédéric and Pierrick, over see a Balearic menu of warm vegetable salads with wasabi dressing, charcuterie plate with warm bread and terrine of foie gras that are appetizer standouts. Main course include pastas with a traditional Spanish spin like black rice with squid or salmon tagliatelle or meat rabbit stew with lemon and seafood selection like fresh cod or Ibiza-sourced skate with butter caper sauce. Stylish Dalt eatery offers one of the walled cities rare foodie finds with a fashionable following that’s perfect for a night in town.

Plaza Del Sol ASW Highly recommending.

Bambuddah Groove This is one of the dinner hotspots for the Ibiza scene: chic guests, a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful location in the interior of the island. There is good quality Asian cuisine. Even though El Ayoun is a bit cooler, we always like to head to Bambuddha Grove – preferably on a Tuesday or Friday, when you can head to the nearby Aura after dinner (see the bars section).

LUNCH BEACH CLUBS
Blue Marlin Along a gravel rural road a motorcade of well-primped socialites and inked hot guys make their summertime pilgrimage to Jondal Beach’s Blue Marlin Beach Club. An equally hot valet points and waves you into a long parking lot facing a single-story all-white beach club. Inside, a massive open-air lounge is arranged in chic tufted-leather sofas and armchairs with a Soho-meets-Bali vibe that envelops an on-site beach shop and massive outdoor terrace overlooking the bay.

By day, Blue Marlin is all about the beach, opening at around 10am for a late breakfast crowd that make their way to several rows of reservation-only sun loungers where they disrobe to reveal perfectly chiseled, perfectly tan bodies. The restaurant shouldn’t be overlooked, equally convenient and delicious, the menu impresses with seafood and super model delicacies. At night the space comes to life as an open-air lounge and nightclub with shirtless DJ’s spinning funky tunes and mashed mixes till 6am during high-season.

One of the best beach clubs on the Mediterranean, Blue Marlin offers an all-day destination for lounging, swimming, eating and dancing by the sea from 10am till sunrise. Be fit or at least dressed to impress (casual, stylish beachwear), especially if you don’t have a reservation for a lounger.

Malibu At the far end of Salinas Beach where a crystal clear Mediterranean yields to hilly trails, Ibiza’s Malibu beach club is situated on a pristine white sand beach with rows of be-seen sun loungers. A crowd of athletic 20-somethings throwing ball carouses with fashionable chicks in frilly sundresses and ridiculously large hats along an oceanfront promenade of gays in speedos and topless sunbathers. The beach club is arranged in a tiki-style pavilion of thatch-roofed patios and open-air terraces overlooking the sea.

An all-day menu of seafood and sandwich specialties is a coveted summer tradion for those types who have long since given up the pleasure of the sun. An on-site DJ mixes subdued house music that gets progressively more electronic through the day as the beach crowd retreats from the waves and sets into the bar around 5pm for late afternoon cocktails and flirtatious mingling.

Not a chic as Blue Marlin, Malibu is often regarded as Ibiza’s next-best beach club for sun-lovers looking to be seen and singles looking to land a guy that isn’t obsessed with Blackcards and Supermodels.

Sands Beach Restaurant Sands Beach Restaurant is the latest addition to the family that includes Base bar and Hotel Es Vive. A super connected, super-stylin’, and all-round wonderful location situated perfectly at the centre of Playa D’en Bossa beach.

Giant white beach beds guarantee long and lazy afternoons, large rustic tables make for bustling lunches or later lounge under the shade of a VIP cabana to beat the afternoon sun. The seductive company of Sands brings most of our clientele back again and again to enjoy the exotic cocktails, inspired musical selection and the best beach food on the island.

Restaurant, cocktail bar, sun bathers paradise, Sands sits at the friendlier, cooler end of the Ibiza beach bar market and most days host another splendid seaside event. Kick back, relax and let the fun come to you; time at Sands leaves nothing to trouble a wonderful day but the thought that it might end. For brunch, lunch, drinks and evening dining or maybe even a little dancing, welcome to Sands, Sands has a wide range of restaurant seating options, please specify when booking if you’d prefer table, sofa, beach or private cabana bed.

Es Torrent As you wind down the dusty road between groves of coastal pines to Es Torrent, it feels as though you could just as easily be in the South of France as a small parking lot marks the spot of one of Ibiza’s most famous seaside eateries. Having already been anointed by the King of Spain as well as numerous fashion icons, a dressy contingent of island elite descend on the beachside eatery with its teak outdoor terrace and collection of thatch umbrellas that host a late-afternoon tanning crowd. Its removed location along a rather popular beach also offers a good landing point for anchored yacht-hopper who arrive to the sandy beach in stilettos and couture sundresses.

Despite its casual location, the chefs of Es Torrent mean serious food business with an all-day menu that begins with tapas portions of grilled octopus, marinated tuna, melon ham and calamari cooked to order. Main course includes a few selections of lamb and chicken but mostly seafood specialties like a mixed fish grill, noodle paella with daily catch, black rice and lobster dishes that include stew and grilled options. A fairly lengthy wine list offers mostly Spanish selections as well as sangria and magnum of champagne and sparkling wines. Ibiza’s top fish restaurant offers swanky seaside location frequented by celebrities and Spanish royalty.

If you want to spend an afternoon on a quiet beach and eat an excellent “pescado a la plancha”, feet in the sand, that’s what you looking for. You’ll need reservation. Top secret place – best seafood ever, no other like this place – marvelous small beach, very quite and private for snorkeling. The best beach restaurant the best paella. Best choice and very low riff raff quotient on the beach. Best paella I ever had in my life! The more relaxed Ibiza-style version of Club 55 in St. Tropez – so cool, but yet so discreet! Address: playa Es torrent. Contact Phone: +34 971 802 160

Amante Beach Club Accessed along a dusty unpaved road at Sol den Serra, Ibiza’s hottest new beach club was formerly named after the secluded swimming cove it’s located. Two-story Amante Beach Club is hidden within a grassy dune and rocky outcropping of one of Ibiza’s most reclusive beaches. By day it’s the sexiest tanning scene on the island, a white sand beach strewn with four-poster loungers with sheer curtains framing an exotic staff dressed in beach creations from Roberto Cavalli that they’re not shy about shedding to reveal 8-pack abs. DJ lounge anthems and icy mojitos carry through the afternoon as patrons frolic between the waves and impromptu sand dance floor. Acquired by owner, Kellie Ragan, in early 2007, the restaurant and beach club have gone through a design exorcism including a renovated dining room with whitewash floors, smooth stucco ceiling and gentile social space popular with Kate Moss and Mario Testino.

In Burberry bathing suits and Chloe sunglasses, a highbrow clientele of mostly Brits and Germans invade most all of the beach loungers by 11am. Waiters arrive with pitchers of white sangria, magnum of Dom and €60 water in Swarovski crystal-emblazed bottles that seem to invite the obvious St. Tropez comparison. The beach is home to a casual sushi bar offering sashimi lunches served at a traditional Japanese counter or along a furnished terrace also home to an evening bistro serving burgers and gourmet pub grub. As evening sets in, a Shangri-la of candlelight sweeps the main dining room as dinner guests arrive to a menu of seafood specialties like pan-fried tuna with grapefruit reduction, grilled fillet with truffles or grilled sea bass with curried ragout.

It’s the hottest destination on Ibiza with exquisite dining room, all-white beach club and evening social scene bringing a bit of bling to Spain’s most celebrated party island. Don’t miss Wednesday morning yoga and brunch every week at 8am from mid-June through October.

Bora Bora Crazy party beach club.

El Chiriinguito Highly recommended.

SUNSETS
Cap des Falco Most spectacular sunsets on the island. Listen to live band playing gypsy kings music to the sunset on chill lounges with a cocktail in your hand. Also has a great restaurant.

Cafe Mambo Post Siesta, around 6pm people begin to gravitate once again to the terraces at Café Mambo, like moths to a flame the irresistible allure of the sunset beckons. Accumulating crowds begin to amass on the beach and sunset galleries. The chilled out beats become more up-tempo and as the spectators gather the sunset spectacle begins. Celebrating the demise of the scorching rays for another day the DJ plays homage to the sun, blending chilled out classics with soulful rhythms, and as the sun finally sets the solemnity is eclipsed with raucous applause. An authentic sunset ceremony.

Darkness falls and the decks are surrendered to the DJ elite. The likes of Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez and Paul Oakenfold have regularly graced the Mambo line-up and the busy bar and terrace is at full throttle. Ibiza comes to life as the fashionable elite rub shoulders with local colour and the Balearic circus is in full swing.
The revellers party on til the early hours of the morning, relishing the funky beats and the close proximity of their favorite DJ´s before moving on to one of the superclubs where they can dance til dawn infused with the Mambo Spirit.

I believe it was Rod Stewart who made the term “Forever Young” famous. Even if it wasn’t it certainly applied to him. Dude looks incredible for his age. No?

So what is it that creates a forever young lifestyle? I have lots of thoughts on this subject. Last week I was in Del Mar California. Kim and I went to Southern California in search of a place to potentially live.

We stayed at a great hotel called the L’Auberge. Every morning we had breakfast at the Americana restaurant. We really connected with our waiter James.

Imagine a super cool 30 year old suffer dude. I was asking him about cool places to live in the Southern Cal area. He told me that his favorite spots in San Diego were between Del Mar and Encinitas.

I asked him if he liked living in the area. He said that he loved it mostly because it was “Forever Young”. The moment he said it I got it. But, I asked him to explain it anyway.

In a nutshell, he explained that here in Southern California it’s really hard to tell the difference between a 60 year old or a 16 year old. The both wear hoodies, surf and hang at the beach. He explained that he couldn’t afford to live the beach life for a few months but his heart kept pulling him back to the ocean. So much so that he was willing to sleep in his van and shower at 24 hour fitness until he could. No judgment here. Here’s the question for you. Would you do that? I wouldn’t either. But, hats off to him. Dude, knows what he wants and is willing to find a way to live his dream.

Here’s the way I see this. Each day that I move closer to 46 I have choice. To get all old and crotchety or to reverse the clock. I’ve decided to make better choices. Younger choices. For me, I’ve taken up clubbing, wearing hoodies and will slowly be moving into living at the beach and surfing. What’s your Benjamin Button gonna be?

Men, have you noticed that as you get older you want to go out and party till the sun comes up less and less? Girls, have you noticed that the responsibilities of work and family have crept in and you don’t get to dance as much as you would like to?

Why is it that in America clubs are for twenty year olds? And, in Europe, you find yourself fist pumping next to a 50 year old? There’s probably lots of reasons and frankly who cares. The point is we tend to get boring as we age over here in North America.

Don’t get me wrong- I’m totally guilty of it myself. But, I decided to change things up in my life. You know…try new experiences. Before we went to Mykonos this summer a friend told me that we should see Tiesto at Cavo Paradiso. I said who’s Tiesto? He said, “dude come on”. I said “really, have no clue”. He said “Google him”.

So begins my journey…..

Turns out this Mr Tiesto guy has -um- 10,018,516- Facebook fans. JEZUZ! Who the hell is this guy? Turns out DJ magazine voted him the worlds best DJ. Fair enough. I’ll give em a listen. I called my favorite hotel front desk girl Eleni and asked her if she would get me some tickets to see him. She called me back and said “all the tables are sold out”. Wait a minute. Sold out? He’s not coming for two months! I don’t want to see the second coming of Elvis. I just want to see a DJ.

Ultimately my Rock Star front desk girl Eleni (read more about her here) was able to score the tickets through some other channels.

Kim and I were told to get there at midnight to secure our VIP table. Tiesto would come on at around 3am. He would play until the sun rose and the first airplane lands at the nearby airport. He did and it did.

Wow. What an experience…

Trying to set this scene is next to impossible. I’ll try. Imagine 4000 people in a club which is built into a bluff and overlooks the Mediterranean. When you first arrive at Cavo Paradiso you completely think that you are inside a club with four walls.

Around 4 am you notice something strange happening to one of the walls. It begins to turn purple. After a few cocktails and being up all night you sort of don’t pay that much attention to it. Until you look again and see that that “purple wall” actually isn’t a wall and has now miraculously been transformed into the Mediterranean ocean. Holy sh*t bawlz. We’re outside!

Before you can say “where’s my glow stick”, Tiesto points out to the horizon from his pulpit, indicating that something is coming. I try and rub the alcohol out of my eyes in vain to make out what’s coming. I see two headlights twinkling in the distant sky which appear to be an airplane. I thought, maybe it was Tiesto space ship coming to pick him up because the gig was over (I later found out he has a Lear Jet for that).

As the twinkling headlights begin to look more like two bright round fireballs hitting their final approach on our dance floor. Tiesto musically scores the landing to classical music which makes you feel as if you and 4000 other people are landing the plane with just the crowds’ combined energy.

I can only imagine what the Captain who just piloted in this overnight flight must be thinking. 4000 people jumping, dancing, screaming and pointing at him as he lands his massive beast of metal at the airport adjacent to Cavo.

After that night I officially became Tiesto Facebook Fan #10,018,517. For me, It’s more then just being a part of good music. It’s about being willing to embrace that dark side we all have inside us. We spend so much of our lives being restrained and contained. Maybe it’s time to take a walk on the dark side. Even if it’s just to party one night until the sun comes up with 4000 of your closest friends.

I wanted (needed) to understand more of what was going on behind the scenes at Cavo Paradiso. So, I asked resident DJ Stathis Lazarides to explain it all. I found him to be an amazing man that is filled with an infectious level of love.

Here’s my interview with him:
