Map of Science Looks Like Milky Way

The pursuit of human knowledge has a shape.

By crunching data from more than a billion user interactions on scholarly databases, Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers produced a high-resolution map of the relationships between different fields of science.

They’re not the first to map science, though they insist that their map is best. Other topographers of knowledge, they say, aren’t up to date on what modern scholars search for, and rely too much on natural science databases.

(Maybe that’s why the Los Alamos map, published in Public Library of Science ONE , looks a bit like the Milky Way, while this lovely scientific paradigm map — a favorite of Nature and Seed magazine — looks like an amoeba.)

The Los Alamos team analyzed click streams from 23 databases — Thomson Scientific, Elsevier, Jstor, Ingenta and multiple campuses of the University of Texas and California State University — and mapped patterns of interest and cross-journal citations. (For anyone concerned about anonymity, no worries: queries weren’t user-identifiable. Your search for "Termination of Intractable Hiccups with Digital Rectal Massage" is still a secret.)

Mapmakers say that visualizations of knowledge help researchers frame discipline-hopping questions and identify neglected cooperative opportunities. I’m not entirely convinced — though the gap between organic chemistry and plant genetics is pretty surprising — but then again, one person’s frivolous distraction is another’s breakthrough-in-waiting.

And that’s what science is all about.

Using Plexiglas and Masonite

I was pretty amazed when I saw this build. The fact of the matter is that not a lot of people have access to laser cutters. I was really impressed that this builder was able to use them and also use them well. The result is a spectacular set of computer speakers that must sound as great as they look. It's important that the knowledge of building electronics isn't lost to the big companies.

This is a set of homemade computer speakers that just look amazing. There is a lot of work that went into cutting them, assembling them and making the final product . They are supposed to sound a lot better than many line array speakers of the same cost. Sniper415 spent about $350 in parts to make these. They are made out of Masonite and wood veneer. It took about three weeks to make them. A lot of time was spent waiting around for the glue to dry. Sniper had access to a laser cutter at his work place, so he used it. He also had experience cutting Plexiglas and Masonite, which were both used in this build.

This is an amazing build, that required a lot of patience and skills to complete. These speakers look awesome. I especially like the Plexiglas front and the fact that the whole surface is made out of Masonite, covered lovingly with coats of veneer. See the full explanations and more photos here. Did you know: you can perform certain actions, like following or marking a friend's update as a favorite, by using the designated Twitter commands? Use the commands listed below from your phone, the web update box, or your favorite third party application.

Turning Twitter off and on: device notifications

ON: turns ALL phone notifications on.

OFF, STOP, QUIT, End, Cancel, Arret or Unsubscribe: turns ALL phone notifications off.

ON username: turns on notifications for a specific person on your phone. For example, ON alissa.

OFF username: turns off notifications for a specific person on your phone. For example, OFF blaine.

FOLLOW username: this command allows you to start following a specific user, as well as receive SMS notifications. Example: follow jermy

LEAVE username: this command allows you to stop following a specific user, as well as stop receiving SMS notifications. Example: leave benfu

Fun Stuff: friends, favorites, and stats!

There's more to Twitter than OFF and ON! Use the commands below to send private messages, mark updates as favorites, or even remind someone to update their Twitter page if you're wondering what they're doing!

@username + message

directs a twitter at another person, and causes your twitter to save in their "replies" tab.

Example: @meangrape I love that song too!

RT username
Retweet's a users latest Tweet

D username + message

sends a person a private message that goes to their device, and saves in their web archive.

Example: d krissy want to pick a Jamba Juice for me while you're there?

FAV username

   marks a person's last twitter as a favorite and causes the message to show up in your "Favorites" tab.

SET LOCATION placename

   updates the location field in your profile

   Example: set location san francisco

WHOIS username

retrieves the profile information for any public user on Twitter.
Example: whois jack

GET username

retrieves the latest Twitter update posted by the person.
Example: get goldman

NUDGE username

reminds a friend to update by asking what they're doing on your behalf.
Example: nudge biz

FAV username

marks a person's last twitter as a favorite. (hint: reply to any update with FAV to mark it as a favorite if you're receiving it in real time)
Example: fav al3x

STATS
this command returns your number of followers, how many people you're following, and your bio information.

INVITE phone number

will send an SMS invite to a friend's mobile phone.
Example: Invite 415 555 1212

Noteworthy Facts

using on/off username from your phone only stops notifications to the place the command comes from; you'll still collect a person's updates on the web.

using follow/leave username from your phone is the same as using on/off username

following someone from a phone for the first time will also cause you to follow them on the web

there is no way to stop following a person on the web without visiting their profile and removing them. The off, leave, stop, and quit commands will only disable updates for the device(s) from which they were sent.

you don't have to use ON/OFF username from the phone, you can also set individual notifcations from a person's profile page, or check your following page and manage all phone notification settings there.

Generosity Will Get You Everywhere in Social Media /by Joanne Fritz

The idea of being generous cannot be overemphasized when it comes to using social media.
Whether you are using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or a variety of other social media platforms, it is crucial that you listen, then engage, and make sure that you provide something of value to your readers.
In his book, Twitterville, Shel Israel talks about "lethal generosity." This seems to be an oxymoron, but it is about being so generous that you literally own the space in which you exercise that generosity. Of course, you can't start out thinking about the lethal part...just the generous part. Otherwise it wouldn't be generous. Israel says, "In social media, the people who are the most generous to their communities almost invariably acquire the greatest influence."
Chris Brogan, co-author of Trust Agents and a leader in the use of social media, emphasizes the need to be human in social media, even if you're representing your company or nonprofit organization. Brogan suggests that you promote others 12 times as much as you promote yourself or your organization.
How do you do that?

First you listen and get to know the community you want to interact with.
Then you ask about them. Invite their comments on your blog, ask a question on your Facebook page and on Twitter.
Respond to the answers and the comments.
Look for information about your subject that you can pass on to your readers. Post links to interesting articles, research, and commentary.
Write posts with lots of links to other sources.
Retweet others' tweets. Say thank you and give compliments frequently.
Be present, responsive, and in for the long haul.

Since social media does take time and constant involvement, be careful about over committing. Start with one platform and then move on to others if you have time. If blogging is all you have time for, then do that and do it diligently. Organizations are starting to recognize the need to commit adequate resources to social media, and that usually means a dedicated staff person or more.
Social media is not for dabblers. It takes focused and determined effort. But the work you put in does pay off with more contacts or supporters, increased influence, and trust in you and/or your organization.
