What you do in college can define the future of your personal and professional life. With so much on the line, a lot of students get stressed and lose track of what’s important. If you’re worried that you won’t get as much as possible out of your college experience, add these five apps to your mobile phone. They can transform your college life.

Timetable

Image via Google Play

Operating system: Android and iOS

Price: Free

Managing your time well is key to succeeding in college. A lot of students fall behind because they don’t follow schedules that help them attend class, complete assignments, and study for tests. Timetable solves that problem by giving you a simple way to create flexible schedules that adjust to each semester’s workload.

Timetable lets you personalize every aspect of your schedule so you don’t have to worry about missing crucial deadlines. When you update your calendar, Timetable synchronizes the changes across all of your Android devices. It will even silence your phone to prevent it from ringing while you’re in class.

Duolingo

Operating system: Android and iOS

Price: Free

Many colleges require students to take at least one foreign language course before they graduate. A classroom environment, however, isn’t always the best place to pick up a new language. College courses often want you to learn by memorizing long vocabulary lists and studying complex conjugation tables. That’s not how people learn their native tongues, so it’s not surprising that students struggle to pass their classes.

Duolingo makes a game of the experience so you can study more efficiently. According to research conducted by Duolingo, the average student can cover a semester of learning in just 34 hours. Pairing the app with your required course will put you on the path to success.

Duolingo has over three dozen language courses for English speakers, including:

Spanish

French

German

Italian

Korean

Russian

Cram

Image via Google Play

Operating system: Android and iOS

Price: Free

You can’t avoid studying, but you can use flashcards to make it easier. Cram lets you create an unlimited number of flashcards so you can prepare for any subject. Whether you’re trying to memorize mathematical equations or historical dates, Cram will train your brain to recall information quickly. You can even decide whether you want to use Card mode, which lets you quickly flip through an entire set of flashcards, or Memorize mode, which hides used flashcards so you can focus on new material.

Since you can store cards either on your phone or in the cloud, you’ll have a handy study aid that works at any time, online or offline. Whenever you have a few minutes to spare, pull out your smartphone and get ready for upcoming exams.

Tinder

Operating system: Android and iOS

Price: Free

Going to college isn’t all about getting good grades. You also want to meet new people and have fun. That’s often easier said than done when you attend a large university with thousands of your peers. With so many possibilities, it’s nearly impossible to decide whom you should try to make friends with.

Tinder gives you a chance to connect with other students who are compatible with you. Instead of going on endless dates, you can concentrate on people who share your interests. Whether you’re looking for a soul mate or you just want to have a good time, Tinder will introduce you to interesting people nearby who are right for you.

Since Tinder uses photos as part of its introductions, you should make sure you look your best by using a smartphone with an excellent camera. Some of the latest smartphones such as the new Samsung Galaxy S7, has a 12MP dual pixel rear camera and a 5MP front camera, so you can take beautiful photos anywhere.

Yik Yak

Operating system: Android and iOS

Price: Free

Social media has gotten so large that it’s nearly impossible to focus on local people and events. Sites like Twitter and Facebook have their benefits, but you need a localized option to find out who’s hosting this weekend’s biggest party.

Yik Yak uses geographic regions so you don’t have to wade through hundreds of posts before you find something fun to do near you. Plus, your community can upvote or downvote posts to help you decide what’s worth paying attention to.

College is an exciting time of life, when you get to learn new things and explore interesting opportunities. By using these apps, you can get good grades while having a blast.

Cambridge, Massachusetts is America’s educational capital, home to a range of important institutions including Cambridge College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Boston, and the acclaimed Harvard University. Students scoping out local campuses and parents visiting their children at school all love these cheap Cambridge hotels.

Irving House at Harvard

Guests always feel pampered at Irving House at Harvard, it’s just a short walk from Harvard University’s campus and the dining and entertainment facilities of Harvard Square. Guests can bring their laptop and use the free WiFi throughout the house or check emails on computers in the parlor and conference rooms.

Eco-minded students will love the green initiatives this solar-powered house is taking. Breakfasts and snacks are sourced from local businesses, and all food waste is composted. Irving House also supplies eco-friendly toiletries, and many items throughout the home are made from recycled materials.

Hotel Veritas

Hotel Veritas claims to be the only luxury hotel in Cambridge making it an ideal choice for students and parents who love the finer things in life. Its Harvard Square location puts guests right in the middle of the action. When they’re not at the nearby Harvard University or Cambridge College campuses, students will probably spend most of their time in the local bars and restaurants.

Luckily, the well-appointed rooms with Egyptian cotton sheets and marble showers are a joy to return to. Wi-Fi’s available throughout the hotel and concierges are available 24-hours a day.

Whitman House

Whitman House only has three guestrooms, so you’ll never feel like just a number. The B&B’s hosts call its guests “new friends,” and try to make everyone’s stay special. Breakfast is served anytime between 7 and 9, but if you’d prefer to sleep in you can help yourself to the kitchen facilities later.

All rooms have WiFi and a flat-screen TV with premium cable channels and a DVD player. Whitman House is a 15-minute walk from both Harvard and MIT. You also have the option to catch the nearby subway; the universities are just one stop away.

Le Meridien Cambridge-MIT

Le Meridien Cambridge-MIT is actually on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s campus making it the perfect choice for prospective MIT students and visiting parents. Perks like complimentary Internet access and premium TV channels keep guests entertained, along with an onsite fitness center that has equipment for aerobic exercise and strength training.

A complimentary shuttle service makes it easy to get around the local area, and there are plenty of local restaurants along the surrounding streets. Sydney’s Grille is a great restaurant to eat at on site.

Hotel Marlowe, a Klimpton Hotel

Image via Flickr by James Keller

Hotel Marlowe is a seven-minute walk from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Boston, so it’s only fitting that its Bambara Restaurant is one of the finest eateries you’ll find in a local hotel. The hosted wine hour that starts at 5 pm every evening is also delightful.

Whether you’re a college-bound kid deciding on a school or a parent visiting your young scholar, these Cambridge hotels make the ideal place for your Massachusetts vacation.

Indianapolis – the Racing Capital of the World – is a popular tourist site, particularly due to its numerous sporting events. The most well-known events that draw in sports fans are the Indianapolis 500, NHRA U.S. Nationals, the Brickyard 400, and the Big Ten Conference Football Championship. But in addition to such terrific sports venues, Indianapolis has many other terrific attractions for tourists to enjoy. Next time you visit the Crossroads of America, check out some of these wonderful places.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art

In addition to the convenience of being within a couple miles of downtown hotels, this fabulous museum draws people in with its free admission and beautiful campus. Once inside, ask what special exhibitions are being held in The Toby – a huge theater room where expert-led conversations, unique performances, and special programs take place.

Head up the escalators to view the amazing displays in the largest encyclopedic art museum in the country. You don’t want to miss the 60-foot Robert Irwin sculpture while there.

There’s more to see outside as the gardens are beautiful. Take a path over to Lilly House, or take a hike at the Art & Nature Park.

Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

Kids love the hands-on world of discovery at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest museum of its kind. Less than half an hour from the hotels near the Indianapolis airport, this distinctive museum is sure to thrill kids of all ages.

Come see the family of dinosaur fossils: a teenage T-Rex, a Gorgosaurus skeleton with a brain tumor, and a fully articulated dinosaur embryo fossil named Baby Louie.

Children can dig for fossils or play interactive video games. Children and parents alike are welcome to make their own sculpture with preformed acrylic orbs. Other activities include climbing a limestone wall, exploring underground life in the science zone, or discovering what’s really lying in the mummy’s tomb.

The permanent exhibit called The Power of Children: Making a Difference displays the amazing stories of Ruby Bridges, Ryan White, and Anne Frank.

Mind-Tripping Show

If you’re already staying in a downtown hotel, drop by the Hilton where the married team of Christian and Katalina put on a surprising, interactive, funny, and sometimes intimate show called Mind Tripping. Their comedy mind-reading act takes you through a series of mind bending yet hilariously good-time adventures. Adults and teens will love this perfect mixture of Candid Camera and the Twilight Zone.

Not to Forget

While in Indianapolis, you really should jet over to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hall of Fame Museum and take a tour of the grounds. The Indiana Repertory Theatre is always a hit; the Indiana War Memorial is an impressive site and shouldn’t be missed; and Victory Field is a great minor league park, perfect for family fun.

Let Hipmunk help you make reservations next time you’re in Indianapolis, and see why Forbes called Hipmunk the best online travel agency in the world.

Top NFL players can make staggering amounts of money. Determining exactly how much they make is often difficult, though, because they have multiple revenue streams including their salaries, bonuses, and endorsements. The player with the highest salary isn’t always the one with the largest income. Still, it’s clear that these four NFL players make more money than most professionals in the league.

1. Matt Ryan

Image via Flickr by Keith Allison

Salary: $42 million

Total: $43.8 million

The Atlanta Falcons drafted Matt Ryan in 2008 to play quarterback. He made a big impact by scoring a touchdown on his very first NFL pass. Since then, he has become a team leader who holds several NFL records. In 2013, he became the franchise leader in passing yards even though the Falcons faced a difficult season with numerous players sitting out because of injuries.

When the Falcons extended Ryan’s contract in 2013, he immediately became one of the NFL players with the highest salaries. In 2014, he’s expected to earn $42 million in salary and bonuses. Ryan also earned $1.8 million in endorsements, which predominantly came from Nike and AirTran.

Ryan has always earned an exceptional salary from the Falcons. The contract that he signed during his rookie year promised him $72 million over six years. This made him the fourth highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Some sports commentators were outraged by a rookie earning so much, and they called for a review of the NFL’s salary cap. Considering that Ryan received a total of about $43.8 million in 2014, those industry experts obviously haven’t gotten their wish.

2. Matthew Stafford

Salary: $31.5 million

Total: $33.0 million

The Detroit Lions signed Matthew Stafford during the 2008 draft. His contract granted him $41.7 million over his first six years. At the time, it was the most promised to any NFL player. Today, Stafford makes exceptionally more. The contract that he signed in 2013 promises $53 million over three years. After bonuses, his 2014 salary comes to about $31.5 million. He also made about $1.5 million from endorsements from Nike, PepsiCo, and a few other companies.

Some argue that Stafford deserves his robust NFL salary. He holds numerous NFL records, including most passing attempts in a season and faster player to accumulate 17,000 passing yards in his career.

3. Peyton Manning

Salary: $15.1 million

Total: $27.1 million

Peyton Manning, the oldest player on this list, holds dozens of NFL records. Oddly enough, his experience doesn’t earn him more money than a couple of rookies. Still, at $15.1 million, he earns more than most NFL quarterbacks.

The bulk of Peyton’s money comes from endorsements with Gatorade, Buick, DirecTV, and Papa John’s. He even owns 21 Papa John’s locations in the Denver area. His combined earnings for 2014 come to more than $27 million.

He may not earn the most, but a younger version of him would definitely appear in DocSports.com College Football Picks. Manning, after all, won numerous awards during his senior year at the University of Tennessee. During that year, he received the Johnny Unitas Award, the Maxwell Award, and the Best College Player ESPY Award.

4. Darrelle Revis

Salary: $23 million

Total: $23.8 million

Like Peyton Manning, Darrelle Revis proves that experience doesn’t always equal a higher salary in the NFL. His 2014 salary is $23 million, nearly half what Matt Ryan makes. After endorsements, Revis makes just under $24 million a year.

Revis is the only cornerback on the list of highest paid NFL players of 2014. Regardless of his position and experience, it’s hard to complain about making more than $23 million in one year.

Revis has slowly worked himself up to this salary. He started playing with the New York Jets in 2007. He joined the Buccaneers in 2013, but only stayed for one year before he was recruited by the Patriots.

How much money does your favorite player earn? Even if he isn’t on this list, he probably earns millions of dollars each season since the average NFL player makes $1.9 million per year. Do you think these players are overpaid, underpaid, or making the perfect amounts?

With so many things to do in Minneapolis, trying to plan your own list of “must see places” becomes hectic and downright confusing. But if you stay close to a landmark like the East Lake Community Library, built in 1924 to accommodate the immigrant population, you can spend your time well. The oldest Lake Library Branch, the East Lake Community Library, had the first woman librarian at the helm, Gratin Countryman.

The Milwaukee Trail-Seward

Milwaukee Avenue Historic District in Seward served as a resting place along the trail between St. Anthony and Fort Snelling. When the city grew, railroad tracks replaced the trail. To accommodate the nearby railroad workers, small homes with gingerbread decoration served as a home base. Built in 1884-1886 for lower-income residents, some of the houses underwent restoration; now a bicycle and pedestrian mall surround them.

Mill City Museum

Downtown Minneapolis was home to the old Washburn, a flour mill built on the banks of the Mississippi River. After extensive renovation, today the museum shows off the history of flour milling and the impact it had on the city’s development. Don’t miss the Flour Tower eight story elevator show, or the hands on Baking and Water Labs. The tour lasts about two hours and adult tickets are just $11. If you’d like to stay close to the Mill City Museum, there are plenty of inexpensive Minneapolis hotels like the Hilton Garden Inn Minneapolis Downtown featuring a restaurant, fitness center, and pool.

Amos B. Coe House

The Amos B. Coe House in Steven’s Square is a true representation of Queen Anne style construction, showing splendid porches and picturesque balconies. Built around 1884-1886, the architects designed the home for upper middle class residents. It now serves as the Minnesota African-American History Museum and Cultural Center.

Alden B. Smith House

Located in Loring Park, the Alden B. Smith House, built in 1886, shows fine masonry stone and round-arched windows, representing the Richardsonian Romanesque design. William Channing Whitney designed the magnificent home at the turn of the century, in a fashionable neighborhood. Its recipient was Alden B. Smith, who made his fortune as a partner in a Sash and Door.

McPhail School of Music

Built in 1923, this Gothic Revival music school for the performing arts was the first of its kind. It grew from two rooms to one of the largest schools of music and dramatic arts in the United States.

Cappelen Memorial Bridge

Known as the Franklin Avenue Bridge, and located near Prospect Park, it spans over 1,000 feet across the Mississippi River, connecting south and south-east Minnesota. Constructed in 1919-1923, it’s the first steel-reinforced arched concrete bridge.

Of course, the Lumber Exchange Building, Bakken Museum of Electricity, the Mary Tyler Moore Statue, and the Mall of America are the most popular sites. However, seeing history from a different point of view is inspiring.

If you have visited other landmarks you’d like to share, please write your response in comment section.

It’s tough being across the river from one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. But, here are 10 affordable reasons to spend more time exploring Newark, NJ, than the Big Apple.

Budget-Friendly Hotels

Unlike neighboring Manhattan, Newark hotels are much more budget-friendly. You can save up to $200 per night without compromising your travel standards. Choose a modern property, like the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Newark Liberty International hotel, and still save lots of cash.

Newark Liberty International Airport

Nothing’s worse than leaving a Manhattan hotel six hours before a flight because you’re worried about traffic and then paying an expensive cab fare. There are many affordable Newark hotels with free airport-shuttle service near this international airport. As an added bonus, there are stunning views of the New York City skyline from different areas of this airport; be sure to have your camera with your carry-on luggage.

Cheap Concerts

If you’re looking for superstar entertainment, you don’t have to look farther than Newark. Many headlining acts pass through the Prudential Center in downtown Newark, while more affordable shows happen at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Affordable Transportation via Penn Station

This central downtown transit station offers commuter rail, bus, and Amtrak train service throughout the area, including New York City and the Newark Liberty International Airport. You can get from Newark Penn Station to New York Penn Station by bus for $4 or by train for $14.

Landmark Churches

Newark is home to several architecturally stunning churches. The Cathedral Basilica of Sacred Heart is not only a beautiful tourist attraction, but it also hosts classical music concerts. Admission is often by donation only and select concerts include a tour of the church.

Branch Brook Park

This 359-acre park is most breathtaking during the April Cherry Blossom Festival. If you’re looking for some retro fun, spend a few hours at the Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Center.

Newark Museum

The Newark Museum boasts an impressive 80 galleries, including collections of 19th century American art, Tibetan art, and a 19th century mansion. Admission is free for residents, while tourists are asked to donate $12 to the museum.

Outlet Shopping

Save money on souvenir shopping at The Outlet Collection Jersey Gardens. This outdoor outlet mall features many popular brands and accommodates about 18 million shoppers each year.

New Jersey Devils

Across the river, the NHL’s New York Rangers often sell out Madison Square Garden and the cheapest seats are around $100 each. In Newark, it’s a little easier to get hockey tickets to the New Jersey Devils. Tickets are about $35 cheaper per seat and you can get even bigger discounts on ticket reselling sites.

World-Class Soccer

Reject the international corporate giants and celebrate independent businesses on your next visit to Monterey. This Californian city was built on mom-and-pop operations, and many of them are still standing today. You can be sure your tourist dollars will stay in the city when you choose the following independent firms.

Stay in Top Boutique Hotels

Choosing boutique hotels in Monterey over the big chains is one of the best ways travelers can support local firms. These independent establishments have personal touches and a unique charm that make them really appealing for tourists.

Take Hotel Abrego, a non-smoking hotel with custom-designed guestrooms kitted out with Italian linens and free Wi-Fi access. If you’d prefer to be closer to the water’s edge, try Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, an opulent hotel on Cannery Row which received Forbes’ prestigious Four-Star Award in 2013. Monterey is also home to the spacious Hotel Pacific, whose lavish guestrooms feature four-poster beds, separate living and dining areas, and opulent bathrooms with both showers and tubs.

Eat in Independent Restaurants

The chain restaurants scattered across the United States are dependable, but not exactly inspiring. If you’re tired of eating at establishments with the same old dishes, then it’s worth trying Monterey’s many independent restaurants.

Restaurants in hotels generally have a bad reputation, but Crazy Horse Restaurant in the Bay Park Hotel bucks the trend. It’s been voted the best salad bar for the past nine consecutive years, so vegetarians are in for a treat. That doesn’t mean that carnivores are neglected though: the natural beef burgers, juicy steaks, and hearty pastas will satisfy meat eaters.

If you’re in the mood for a romantic night out, try Montrio Bistro or Restaurant 1833. Montrio Bistro was once a firehouse, but today oozes cool with its focus on organic produce and sustainable seafood. Restaurant 1833 also has a rich history. Housed in the heritage site Stokes Abode, this gourmet restaurant reinvents casual dishes in seven unique dining rooms. These high-end establishments are both Fodor’s Choice restaurants, recognized for providing “remarkable experiences in their price range, destination, or category.”

Shop in Quirky Indie Boutiques

Look to Monterey’s independent boutiques for the best souvenirs of your Californian getaway.

Art lovers flock to Carmel-by-the-Sea, which is home to the galleries and studios of more than 100 local artists. The family-owned stores are the perfect place to find apparel, wine, and gifts that are just a little bit different.

Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey also has a vibrant independent spirit. It’s home to Hellam’s Tobacco Shop, the longest trading cigar shop on the West Coast, custom jewelry specialists Gasper’s Jewelers, and hip boutique Karma Fashion Lounge.

Even the famous Cannery Row strip has its fair share of independent retail outlets. You’ll have to wade through the big national brands, but mom-and-pop operations like Rosie’s Apparel & Toy Store, Sharky’s Shirts, and Vajra Collection make it worth the effort.

Have we missed any of Monterey’s great independent businesses? Let us know in the comments.

Walk the Historic District

The best way to fully enjoy Savannah is on foot. Walking this historic town lets visitors explore at their own pace. See something worth taking a little more time to enjoy it? No problem. While there are a number of historic walking tours available in town, guests are perfectly welcome to create their own. Savannah serves up a brilliant mix of architecture including the ornate Steamboat Gothic Gingerbread House (aka the Asendorf House), the Italian Renaissance style Armstrong House, and the Federal-style Davenport House. The Scottish Rite Temple is a striking monument to Masonry that has stood as a downtown landmark for over 85 years.

For visitors interested in more than just architecture and design, they can pay tribute to one of the South’s most well-known and legendary authors at Flannery O’Connor’s birthplace. O’Connor’s childhood home is one of the few museums in the country to be restored to the Depression-era.

Feel the History

In addition to its breath-taking beauty, Savannah is a town known for its museums. With over 20 museums, Savannah has one for every interest. Some of the highlights include: the Telfair Museum, the South’s oldest public art museum; the Railroad Museum, which gives visitors the opportunity to view a fully operational turntable and experience the hand car; and the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, where visitors can appreciate Savannah’s rich nautical history.

Taste the History

Savannah boasts quite the epicurean oasis and craft bar scene. Visitors will enjoy the traditional Lowcountry cuisine the city is known for. Fresh seafood and Southern classics blend for an unforgettable taste. These restaurants serve up more than great food, their historic ambiance is just as delectable.

The Crystal Beer Parlor is Savannah’s second oldest restaurant and features a varied menu and interesting memorabilia decorating its walls.

For guests looking for a romantic atmosphere, try Circa 1875 Gastropub, serving delicious French cuisine. Ask to be seated in the wine cellar for a memorable experience.

Love’s Seafood and Steaks offers breathtaking views of the Ogeechee River. This rustic place was one of the filming locations for “Forest Gump.”

When you think of the country’s most historically significant cities, the first one that comes to mind may not be Springfield, Missouri. However, that may change when you discover all the little-known historical facts about Springfield as well as its many fascinating attractions that commemorate the historical sites in and around the city. As you make flight reservations and book hotels like the La Quinta Inn Springfield South, keep in mind that, once you’ve learned about the rich history of Springfield, you will likely long to discover it for yourself.

Discover the Legend of Route 66

The extraordinary, beloved Route 66 that has become a part of our national legend actually has its origins in Springfield. The city is recognized as the birthplace of Route 66. It became known as the “Mother Road,” and it was the first fully paved, numbered highway in the country. The Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven is not only a historically significant hotel, but also it has a fun, fifties-style look that helps visitors feel that they really have stepped back into history.

Observe the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail

The event that is now known as the Trail of Years is one of the most tragic events in our history as a country and culture. That is when over 16,000 Native Americans were forced from their homes by the American government and forced on a treacherous trail where many died. Part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail runs directly through Springfield, and you can walk it and observe this somber historical site. Part of it can also be traveled by car. It’s an important educational site, and you may go with a tour guide so that you learn as much as possible from the visit.

Learn About Folk Heroes

The once-infamous site of the Wild Bill Hickok – Davis Tutt shootout is also located in Springfield. Davis Tutt was an unassuming cowboy. However, in July of 1865, he had a run-in with gunfighter and gambler Wild Bill Hickok, and the two had a shoot-out with two pistols drawn in a public duel. Sadly, Tutt was shot and killed. While Tutt also shot at Hickock, he missed. You can go to the site of the Wild Bill Hickok – Davis Tutt shootout in Springfield and learn more about it with the downtown audio tour, and Tutt’s grave can be visited at the Springfield City Cemetery.

Stay Near Where History Was Made

When you are planning your trip to Springfield, you will likely want to stay near some of the historical attractions that the city has to offer. The University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center is near multiple historical sites and the Discovery Center of Springfield. The American Inn Ozark and Arbor Suites Medical Mile are near the Commercial Street Historic District.

I’m trying to build an ultimate resource on things to do with the historical aspects of Springfield. If you’ve been to Springfield and explored any of its historical sites, please add your thoughts and other tips below!
