Homesteading, in particular, doesn’t work very well as a solitary sport. We need people. We weren’t meant to do it alone. So writes Victoria Gazeley, experienced rural homesteader and blogger for Grit Magazine and Mother Earth News online editions.

Posting on her own blog in an article titled: Living Your Dream:
Three Strategies for Embracing Fear and Resistance, at modernhomesteading.ca, Victoria writes: Sharing with others, leaning on others and recognizing that you can’t live without others (not very well, anyway) is critical to living a joyful, fulfilled life – especially in a rural area.

Our subscribers and regular online community listeners know, that Lynne and I couldn’t agree more, with what Victoria is saying about the importance and the value of community for rural homesteading or small farming self-sufficient, sustainable living.

Rural homesteading blossoms in the fertile soil of local community and grows exponentially worldwide through online communities.

In this episode we share that in addition to the blessings of our local community, we are also being blessed to be part of a growing online community.

Our online community is abundant with many people who aren’t afraid to dream or think too big, and who have the “right stuff”, matched with the wise know-how to turn their dreams into reality.

In this episode we share a call-in to our Listener Feedback Line from Emily Josephine, a wife, mother, blogger and podcaster. Emily, her husband Jerry and their small son are not afraid to dream big. Emily and Jerry are great examples of good folks in our listening community, who have the “right stuff”, and who are taking measurable steps of action in faith, to make their dreams of becoming rural mountain homesteaders a reality for them. Listen in to enjoy Emily’s comments and learn more about their dreams and journey back to their rural roots.

We are always so pleased to learn of others who have what I like to sometimes refer to as the Field of Dreams…Dream. But more than just learning about other folks having similar back to the land and homesteading or small farming dreams, as pleased as we are to learn about you folks, we really get excited about learning about folks who are taking action to make their dreams a reality like Lynne and I did, and like Tim and Liz Young from Natures Harmony Farm.com did before us.

In our episode #25, Lynne and I have had the great pleasure, fun and learning experience to have Tim and Liz Young on as our guests on the Living the Simple Good Life show. During this interview Tim and Liz shared from their inspiring and informative eye opening book The Accidental Farmers: An urban couple, a rural calling and a dream of farming in harmony with nature.

I mention Tim Young of Nature’s Harmony Farm because when Tim was on our show in episode 25, Tim talked very passionately about this subject of dreams and Tim addresses the subject of farm and country dreams with a lot of wisdom in his book.

Excerpts from the Accidental Farmers from Chapter 10 titled: Downshifting

Tim writes: From the endless questions and comments we receive on our farm tours I know that our life farming in the country is a dream that is shared by many.

For most it’s just a fantasy that they can indulge in by visiting farms like ours or following us online. Then there are others who truly endeavor to pry themselves from their urban cubicles as we did so that they can live off the land and perhaps produce enough food for others to pay the bills.

They dream of living in the country but just aren’t sure how to get there. For a dream to become reality rather than remaining a wish the dream must morph into a personal vision. Whereas a dream can creep into my self-consciousness on its own, I on the other hand become the architect of a vision.

At this point it’s really no longer an abstract dream, semantics aside, but a vision that I see for myself. My vision. The question becomes whether I can make that vision a reality.

I must take action by defining a series of measurable steps to do just that. If I can’t, I am content to leave the dream in the fantasy category. In my experience it is at precisely this point that most people’s dreams get stuck.

They persist in a perpetual state of “almost ready” as they enter a lasting phase of paralysis by analysis. They never act on their vision beyond that.

We encourage you to get your own copy of The Accidental Farmers and read for yourself the full text of the inspiring wisdom that Tim and Liz share in this chapter and throughout this wonderful read. Below today’s Show Notes we have provided our Amazon affiliate link for you to order The Accidental Farmers and we thank you for your support of our podcasts when ordering through our affiliate links.

Maybe the reason that some people never act on their visions or dreams is because of fear and resistance.

We have a great blog article that we also share with our listeners in this episode that deals with some of the common dream stoppers. The blog post is by Victoria Gazeley, a dreamer who is now also an experienced rural homesteader who shares lessons and insights from her journey from dreamer to one who is actually living her dreams.

In this episode we share some key excerpts from this post by Victoria Gazeley, from ModernHomesteading.ca, titled: Three Strategies for Embracing Fear and Resistance.

Victoria writes: Homesteading, even the modern kind, is ripe with opportunities for fear to rise up and cripple us from living our dream.

Victoria writes: Before we get started, I want to share with you how fear has affected me on my journey from the city to the country (and since). She then gives a bullet list of eight fear stops on her journey, some of which we discuss on today’s show.

Victoria continues: Bottom line – fear kept me from moving forward towards my dreams, and pushed me into frustration, anger and burn out. Not something I would recommend.

Three Strategies for Embracing Fear and Resistance to Live Your Dreams

Strategy 1: “Get over yourself.” “It’s not about you! We get so wrapped up in our dramas and insecurities, and let’s face it, ‘smallness’, that we fail to see that the big world needs us to show up. It needs us to follow our dreams. It needs us to get over ourselves, get out of the way, and let greatness happen

Strategy 2: Reach out to others. Sharing with others, leaning on others and recognizing that you can’t live without others (not very well, anyway) is critical to living a joyful, fulfilled life – especially in a rural area.

Homesteading, in particular, doesn’t work very well as a solitary sport. We need people. We weren’t meant to do it alone. And the sooner those of us who have had issues with being ‘dependent’ on others get over it, the sooner our dreams will become our reality.

Strategy 3: Surround yourself with people who truly support your dreams. This goes along with ‘reaching out to others’, but it’s beyond that. It’s about choosing to listen to people who have something life-giving to say, and not to those who would prefer you stay ‘small’.

Absorb the messages of those who truly want to see you become the grandest version of yourself. Those are the people you want to listen to. Now just imagine how this could change your world. How it could change the world…

Victoria closes by saying: To sum it up, we’re all in this together, and by you living your dream, I’m encouraged to live mine. And maybe one day soon, everyone will see fear and resistance for what they are – personal pointers to incredible lives.

Rural homesteading, self-sufficient sustainable living, is for Lynne and me a community experience.

Is rural self-sufficient sustainable living and the need for community an oxymoron?

What do you do when the rope on your chicken tractor trips you up and you are about to fall face down into a big fresh pile of chicken litter?

What friends can you meet and what can you learn from visiting and making friends at your local rural hardware and farm co-op supply?

Has our exodus and journey, and deliverance from the metro Tampa Bay area of Florida to the rural NW Georgia mountains been all that we hoped it would be?

What cats did we let out of the bag early before we planned to share them on upcoming podcasts?

Oh! What A Surprise It Was!
One week later from publishing that episode, by accident (or was it?), Lynne flipped on the TV…and right before our surprised eyes and dropped jaws was a special one-hour PBS documentary. And, can you believe this? The title of the PBS documentary is: The Hayloft Gang: the Story of the National Barn Dance. Listen in to this episode as we share our excitement of finding, viewing and DVR recording of this great documentary of some of America’s rural and country history, culture and entertainment. Below we’ve included links to the PBS documentary and the National Barn Dance website.

Big Brown (UPS) and Jake, our rural friendly UPS driver, are always welcome guests on our rural NW Georgia mountains homestead. And, the visit we talk about in this episode was no exception. However, it was what was in the package from Amazon.com that Jake delivered, two days earlier than we expected, that really got us rocking on our front porch Cracker Barrel oak rockers!!!

Join us as we share with our listening community the contents of that little box from Amazon.com. We consider what was delivered to us in that little box to be one of the biggest, and one of the most valuable resources we’ve purchased so far, for successfully living our rural agrarian homesteading lifestyles.

For our podcast subscribers and regular listeners, if we mention the names George Nash and his wife Jane Waterman, and Gopher Broke Farm…and, if we remind you of episode #22 of Living the Simple Good Life podcast, we’ll bet ya’ll guess the contents of that box as quick as a chicken jumping on a June bug!

Yep! We received our eagerly anticipated copies of George’s and Jane’s recently released new book titled: Homesteading in the 21st Century—How One Family Created a More Sustainable, Self-Sufficient, and Satisfying Life, by Tauton Press

Being rural agrarian homesteaders for only nine months doesn’t make us any kind of experts, but we sure have learned some lessons (some the hard way), from the homestead about our self-sufficient sustainable living lifestyles that we are willing to share.

One key lesson we share in this episode is:
Don't Sweat It!
You are a very wise person to come in out of this sweltering heat to cool down and listen to our podcast, the kind of folks we love having in our listening community! Welcome.

Being rural agrarian homesteaders for only nine months doesn't make us any kind of experts, but we sure have learned some lessons (some the hard way), from the homestead about our self-sufficient sustainable living lifestyles that we are willing to share.

One key lesson we share in this episode is:
If the "Why" is strong enough...the "what", "how" and "when" will come.

Thanks for listening.

When Lynne Takes Over The Control Chair
Anything Can Happen!!!

After almost 44 years of marriage Lynne and I purposely look for fresh ways to keep our romance flaming and keep our marriage new, filled with fun and excitement. Rigid predictability can become a stale staple retarding the growth of happy, healthy relationships.

In our marriage and at our new homestead, the only thing that is predictable is that, on purpose, there is very little that is too commonly predictable. This 27th episode of Living the Simple Good Life podcast is a clear case in point.

Case in point: what happens when my reserved by nature homesteading bride takes over the “‘Control” chair in our podcasting studio?!! Listen in as Lynne unpredictably, seizes the power and the creative freedom of the “Control” chair spot, and she pulls the plug on me, so to speak, with some unexpected surprises and fun.

Also in this episode we are so pleased and thankful to announce that we had the special honor to be invited as guests on the highly popular, Podcast Answer Man podcast on the GSPN.TV podcasting network and community. Cliff Ravenscraft, the Podcast Answer Man got Lynne and me started in podcasting and continues on as our podcasting consultant and coach. Most importantly Cliff, and his lovely bride, Stephanie, have become very special friends and great professional podcasting examples for us. Here is the direct link to listen to our interview on episode #208 of the Podcast Answer Man.

In this episode we are pleased to announce the Hydroponics Farmer, the soon to be launched second podcasting show that Lynne and I are producing and hosting on the Simple Good Life Network. Hydroponics and Aquaponics are tomorrow’s farming systems that are already growing healthy, local food today. Within a couple of weeks you can listen in to these educational farming podcasts through iTunes or by going to www.Hydroponicsfarmer.com. We will also provide a link on the Simple Good Life Network website to the Hydroponics Farmer.

Next, after some studio clowning around, my unpredictable co-host, acting like a “Big Shot” in the Studio “Control” chair, plays the “drum roll” for our announcement of the hot off the newsstand, much anticipated Summer Edition of the New Pioneer Magazine, The Complete Guide To Self-Reliant Living from Stanley R. Harris publishers NY, NY. If you can’t locate the New Pioneer magazine retail in your area here is the link to order direct from the publisher.

In the closing segment of this 27th episode be prepared to be touched and moved as we share with all of you in our listening community two very special Listener Feedback emails. As the title to this 27th episode says, “Listener Feedback Feeds Community Growth,” and we can assure you that you won’t go away hungry as a community member after hearing the hearts, desires and dreams of these two special couples who share their desires in their pursuits to live God-honoring more self-reliant sustainable lifestyles.

Lynne and I invite and warmly welcome your participation to join us in responding to these emails from Steve Krieg and Ruth Ferrari. We would really appreciate your participation and we know that Steve and Ruth would be encouraged and blessed also by hearing responses from others in our listening community.

These links contain Steve emails and Ruth emails, in pdf format, that we were honored to share in this episode. As we also mentioned in this episode, there are two ways you can participate in joining in as a community to help us respond to Steve and Ruth. One, you can email your response to ShowTalk@SimpleGoodLifeNetwork.com. In the Subject line please indicate Steve Response or Ruth Response. Or, we would love to hear your verbal responses by calling the Listener Feedback line at 727-238-7276. And, if you are so led, please join in prayer with us on behalf of the prayer requests Ruth and Steve requested in their emails.

Thank you for listening to our Living the Simple Good Life podcasts. We want to be here for you and we would love to hear from you.

God Bless,
Barry & Lynne

A much welcomed break in the frigid, record breaking North Georgia winter finds Lynne and me with a bad case of early spring gardening fever. Since moving to our NW Georgia mountains homestead on November 1, 2010, we have yet to really get outside and connect with our land and begin our agrarian homesteading lifestyle.

We have big dreams and plans for converting our mountain home and property into a viable self-sufficient and sustainable agrarian homestead as our first stage in becoming small farmers. We were going to use this episode to share some of those plans with our listening community. But, after meeting Renea Winchester, author of the fun and inspiring book: In the Garden with Billy, Lessons About Life, Love and Tomatoes, we just had to shelve for another episode more in the saga of our journey, and bring you this gifted author and her amazing story.

We are so pleased to have Renea Winchester as our guest on the Living the Simple Good Life podcast and we know you will be too. Thank you all for listening.

We get walloped at our NW Georgia homestead by an eight inch snow storm, our second snow storm within two weeks. Our white Christmas snow of four inches melted within a few days and that was a good thing. The Deep South is unaccustomed and unprepared to handle this much snow and so were we.

In this episode we ex-Floridians talk about our feeble attempts to get ready for the winter blizzard that was on its way. The snow came as forecasted, boy did it!!!

Without a four wheel drive vehicle, a snow blower or even a snow shovel, we were snowed in and stranded, until we were rescued by what looked to us to be a snow angel riding on a tractor. Listen in and hear our story of being snowed in, but not forgotten and meet our rescuer.

Where did the seeds of our desire to own a NW Georgia sustainable small farm homestead first get planted? Listen in as we tell the story of a spiritual mountain top trip and experience that began our long and hopefully successful journey.

Will the developing bank caused foreclosure crisis halt or put at risk our signed Buyer’s Agreement and our dreams, to purchase our NW Georgia rural mountain homestead?

We get in front of our new media reporter microphones and provide a fair and balanced “News Alert” regarding the massive national home foreclosure crisis.

We use this episode to complete the details of our trip at the end of August to purchase a small farm homestead in NW Georgia.

We headed back to LaFayette, Georgia this past week on a short three day trip to investigate four new additional properties. We discuss how excited we are to report the good news that we made a selection of one of those properties that we love, and submitted an Offer/Purchase Agreement with earnest money.

We introduce our listeners to Billy Teems of Teems and Teems Realty located in LaFayette, Georgia. Billy has not only been our trusted real estate professional he is also becoming our new friend.

Our search began in this area of Georgia, will it finally end here after a couple of years, at exactly the location and community of LaFayette that we have so desired? Or, was this our promise land that the Lord has been directing us to all this time?

The picture below of Fisher Price’s “Little People” illustrates an intimate story Lynne shares from our early marriage years.
Lynne, me and the Dixie Dachshund Boys headed back to NW Georgia on August 23rd in search of our small farm homestead. We stayed searching for a week and returned home on August 30th.

We had such a hindering start to our trip that we decided to use this episode to whine about the petty circumstances that almost kept us from heading out, that is, if they all weren’t so laughable. Next episode we will be discussing our productive week in Georgia and talk about some of the great people we were with and some of the details of our search.

Thanks for listening, God Bless

<itunes:summary>Lynne, me and the Dixie Dachshund Boys headed back to NW Georgia on August 23rd in search of our small farm homestead. We stayed searching for a week and returned home on August 30th.

We had such a hindering start to our trip that we decided to use this episode to whine about the petty circumstances that almost kept us from heading out, that is, if they all weren't so laughable. Next episode we will be discussing our productive week in Georgia and talk about some of the great people we were with and some of the details of our search.

Thanks for listening, God Bless

In this episode we share more of our simple good life journey and our continued search for our small farm homestead.

We give an update on our consideration of a five acre small farm in Trenton, Florida that we really like. Lynne and I are prepared to move really fast so we can occupy our promise land and start planting and growing for the fall harvest, and at the same time not be set back in the progress of our New Media business.

We discuss at length and in some geekish terms, the impact that the lack of broadband in rural America, and especially at this five acre property location, is having on our decision making process. Our desire to be sustainable small farmers/new media podcasters adds to our internet broadband requirements.

Not having all the knowledge and information about internet broadband, especially satellite provided broadband that we need for making a wise choice, we turn to Cliff Ravenscraft, “The Podcast Answer Man”, our trusted friend, and podcasting consultant and coach for his experience and valuable advice.

We discuss our prayers and decision making process to make a wise decision in making this life changing move, to acquire this farm and don’t want to find ourselves, “Left Behind in Rural America.”

Lynne and I discuss our dual role, two hats media coverage and attendance of the 2010 Florida Small Farms Alternative Enterprises Conference.

We give highlights of the well attended conference and name this year’s multiple recipients of the 2010 Florida Innovative Farmer Award. We discuss the very positive response and gratitude that we received about this year’s conference from the many small farmers we interviewed.

Barry and I had an educationally, socially and business rewarding experience and a super fun time at the conference. We offer our thanks and congratulations to the faculty, extension agents and staff at the University of Florida/IFAS and Florida A&M University/CESTA for a great and successful conference.

We talk about the fun time we had as invited guests of the highly popular Family From The Heart podcasting show, co-hosted by Cliff and Stephanie Ravenscraft. Family From The Heart is one of many popular and successful podcasting shows that the Ravencrafts produce from their GSPN.TV Podcasting Network. We share our love for these folks and our appreciation to be special guests on their live UStream podcasting show.

In this episode we share more of our simple good life journey and our continued search for our small farm homestead.

Our search for property has us looking in a new direction far from the NW Georgia mountains that we love so well, for the beauty of the heartland rural folks, as well as the beauty of the Georgia mountains.

Maybe the saying about living in Florida is more than a saying, “you get sand in your shoes and plenty of sunshine on your head, and it’s hard to leave.” But for us long term Florida residents we thought we were ready to dump the sand out of our farm boots and heed the call to NW Georgia . That is, until our GPS and compass seemed to stop working, when we reached the NW Central Florida communities of Chiefland and Trenton, only one hundred and fifty miles north of our home in St. Petersburg, Florida.

We tell about a little five acre farm homestead in Trenton that we have found, that is available and meets almost most of our criteria and requirements, except a major one that could be a deal breaker.

But, more than that little farm has caught our attention and our affection. We have encountered in that area several communities of rural folks who have impressed us with such a positive impact that we are close to a decision to stop the wagon train short of the Georgia mountains and establish our small farm homestead in Trenton, Florida, and be honored and blessed to join in community with these great heartland rural folks.

The highlight of this episode that you won’t want to miss is an interview with Rick Burnham, Editor of the Levy County Journal, a small local rural paper from Chiefland in Levy County Florida. <itunes:summary>In this episode we share more of our simple good life journey and our continued search for our small farm homestead.

In this interview Rick shares with Lynne and me and our listeners, what we think is a big part of what is about to stop us in our farm searching tracks, and say no to the call from the Georgia mountains.

In this second episode of Living the Simple Good Life, Lynne and I share more of our journey and our personal story, as we continue on the path to pursuing a simple good life (as we define it for our lives), through becoming Christian agrarian homesteaders, sustainable small scale farmers and new media podcasters.

Barry and I use this second episode, early on in our podcasting endeavors, to share with our listeners our life’s purpose and mission, which can now be of even greater scope and effectiveness, with the addition of our podcasting.

I speak from my heart and Barry’s heart too, I know, when I say, “it’s not only our desire, it’s our passion to be a genuine source of encouragement and support for younger individuals, couples and families who are pursuing Christ-centered, home and family based, sustainable agrarian lifestyles, it’s our prayer for each and every one of these podcasts and it’s our life mission for this stage of our lives and our ministry.”

Lynne and I share with our listeners more about our search for small farm property.

We continue on with our conversation from our first episode and talk more about our search and trips to NW Central Florida, we tell about our second and third trips back to that area and back to the small farm property we discovered on our first trip.

Barry knows that I am popping at the seams in excitement and eagerness as I reveal the names of Trenton and Chiefland Florida, two great little rural farming communities that we left unnamed from our last podcast.

Lynne and I both give our listeners some general information about Trenton and Chiefland. Lynne talks about the Trenton town slogan: “Welcome to Trenton A Community of Friends”, and we discuss that it is more than a slogan, and that on our repeated trips there that we are coming to learn, that it truly describes the folks who live in the Trenton Florida area.

We first discovered the Trenton slogan on the old city water tank located in a park in historic downtown Trenton.

This was the first episode introducing the Simple Good Life Network and Barry and Lynne Morgan.

Newlyweds, we just celebrated our forty-third wedding anniversary on June 17th. Lynne and I have served for over four years, in Christian rural ministries, in the southeastern United States. During our rural ministry service, both of our hearts have been gripped and burdened for small farm families and the largely forgotten rural needy.

Our husband and wife ministry team experiences ignited in us both, a strong love for the people and for the rural communities we encountered. Our experiences have fueled a burning passion that Barry and I share for living the simple good life through becoming sustainable small scale farmers ourselves.

Lynne and I discuss the novelty of our new podcasting business and the fun we are having in the learning process and in the production and delivery of our very first ever podcast. We credit Cliff Ravenscraft, our great podcasting and new media consultant and coach, for setting us up and getting us started in podcasting.

Lynne and I talk about our new, under construction and developing home on the web at SimpleGoodLifeNetwork.com. We again credit Cliff for his web expertise and help with our website. You can learn more about Cliff Ravenscraft at www.Podcastanswerman.com or through his podcasting show network at GSPN.TV.

I get Barry and me talking about our forty-third wedding anniversary and I share about a small farm property searching excursion that Barry and I made to a rural area in northwest Florida, as part of our anniversary celebration. I leave unnamed for now, the names of the two pretty and pleasant little rural communities we visited, but I do talk about a delightful encounter we had with Nancy, a department manager in a rural picture perfect, smaller Winn Dixie grocery market, that was located in the larger of the two communities.

I talked about the upcoming Florida’s Small Farms Alternative Enterprises Conference, to be held on July 31st and August 1st , in Kissimmee, Florida, and that Lynne and I would be attending and report back in future episodes. Conference Info:
