Hi Everyone,
Because of my radio show, I see a lot of shelter and rescue Web sites. I've made the observation before that many shelter Web sites aren't as effective as they could be because of poor design. But assuming you've got the basics of decent design handled already (which I hope you do), what's next? If it seems like your site isn't doing much for you, what can you do to keep people interested and coming back?
Ideally, you want your site to become a resource that people return to time and again. People tend to go online for three reasons: to research or buy something, find solutions to a problem, or be entertained. If your website provides all three; products, information, and entertainment, you're in great shape!
The key is quality content. Your content can provide information, entertainment, and when done well, can even inspire donations or adoptions. Here are a few content ideas from my book Publicity to the Rescue:

How to articles, videos, and audio. ("How to teach your dog to sit.")
Tips articles, videos, and audio ("10 tips for keeping your dog flea free this summer.")
Adoption stories ("Rover goes from starving stray to couch potato at his new forever home!")
Workbooks and reports (Vaccination record books or a post-adoption handbook)
Interviews with experts (Find a vet or behaviorist who is willing to answer the tough questions.)
Product reviews ("Acme Dog Beds: Sure they sound like a good idea, but don't hold up over time.")

Notice that all of the content ideas specifically focus on the visitor. Along those lines, Michelle over at the "Pet News and Views" blog shared a helpful link to a post called "Charitable Deductions for Animal Rescue Volunteers" by attorney Julian Block. It's specific and useful if you're a volunteer.
Think about equally helpful content that can help YOUR Web site visitors. Brainstorm some ideas and then start creating!

We need people who have a passion for animals to volunteer for our organization. As you may know, we are one of the only non-profit animal welfare organizations that not only bring comfort to 1,500 homeless animals a month, but also educates hundreds of children with our humane pet education programs. UPDATE: Still need homes for 2 dogs, 1 is foster home!

Nico (12), and Ally (13), the two senior dogs whose owner died, now BOTH need homes again. The woman who agreed to take Ally has changed her mind, (she now wants a smaller dog).

They are both up to date on their shots now, and the vet has said euthanasia is out of the question, as they are too healthy. We cannot afford boarding for both dogs, and shelters will not take them.

Ally is very adoptable, DOES NOT BARK, gentle, sweet dog.

Nico only needs a home for 3 to 4 months, and WILL be re-adopted in June.

WE HAVE NOWHERE TO TAKE THEM NOW.

IF YOU OWN A DOG OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES PLEASE READ: This is a warning from a friend of mine: "This is an alert to all dog owners...if you are feeding your dog Purina Dog Chow lamb and rice....stop immediately...I switched my dogs to this food on Friday and both my dogs have had issues." She just lost both of her dogs. One dog had a blood disorder and they couldn't stop the bleeding. The other dog just had a checkup 2 weeks ago and died of renal failure yesterday. Their vet sent the dog and a sample of the dog food to Texas A&M to get it tested. They did a little research on the ingredient Menadione (used Purina One Lamb and Rice) and it says it can cause damage to red blood cells (which could explain the blood disorder in the first dog) and can cause organ damage to kidney and other organs (which the other dog died of renal failure). It says that it takes prolonged use or heavy doses for this to happen so if that is what caused it, it's because they screwed up and put too much of it in the food. They are waiting for the tests come back from Texas A&M to make sure. They "wanted to warn everyone of the possibility that this food could kill your dog. If you notice any bleeding of the gums or ears get your dog checked immediately if your dog food has this ingredient. If you dog suddenly quits eating, get it check out immediately".

The family has found a temporary foster for Putty 90 miles away in Las Vegas and will go there Tuesday (he will be neutered by then). There are Border Collies there and it sounds great. Jeff said he is thankful for the outpouring of support and crossposting, and will keep us updated on how Putty is doing at the foster's.

Right now "Putty" is boarded at the North Valley Animal Hospital in Fort Mohave AZ due to landlord banishing him :-(
The Johnsons want a temporary foster situation. They signed a lease that ends July 15th but due to the landlord banishing their dog they wish to vacate the rental July 1st. They are open to a permanent placement if for some reason that seemed more appropriate for Putty's well-being but their first choice is to reunite with their dog in a better home.

Jeff Johnson wrote about how his mother chose the name "Putty":
She named him Putty after a character in the show Seinfeld. "Puddy" was the character in the show, but she spelled it wrong when he went to the vet the first time and it stuck as Putty. (We had named our other dogs after characters in the show and our daughter had encouraged her to do it with him too).

Seeking a home for our dog, his name is Putty. He was born on April 12, 2005 so he will be 7 this year. His mother was a Red Heeler, his father was a Border Collie. My mother got him from the farm where he was born in Michigan. He has been in the family since he was born as he was my mother's companion as she battled cancer for years. She passed away last March and we took him. When we moved to Laughlin, Nevada, from Michigan for my wifes job we ended up unexpectedly taking him with us (as another family member who was going to take him decided she couldn't). Due to a dispute with our very unreasonable landlord we have been forced to find him another home until the lease expires July 15, 2012 or face eviction. We have tried everything to gain more time or change his mind but to no avail. We haven't been able to find anyone locally to take him yet either. He is very active but will also sit quietly and loves to be with people. He loves attention, walks, playing.
He is very much protective of his family and people who trusts and knows. He will be wary of strangers and new people until he is around them a couple times and sees that he can trust them and that the family accepts them. Then he is like a big baby puppy. He has had a slight history of seizures that are now pretty much controlled by meds and a diet. They have dimished as he aged but are easy to manage when they happen. Completely housebroken, never an accident, doesn't chew except on his bones or toys. He is also trained to be in his kennel when necessary and in fact will sometimes lie in it even when not necessary. Can be outside and never bark unless strangers approach the house. Appears to be a great watchdog due to his "bark". He has done well with our other dog and around our grandchildren (2 and 4) and daughter (15). Being a heeler he has a herding instinct and would do well somewhere with a large fenced area and/or lots of excercise walking. Not yet neuter ed but up to date on all shots. Right now we are boarding him at the North Valley Animal Hospital in Fort Mohave, AZ, near where my wife works. We did this because of the dispute and our landlord creating more problems and visits to the house over the weekend. This is an urgent situation as we can't afford too long of a stay there and need to address where he can go from there.

Dear Friends of Highway, the Bait Dog,

I want to thank everyone who donated to Highway's cause so very much. We have been able to keep him alive long enough for his many wounds to begin healing. While still quite rough, his skin looks so much better, as you can see. His drains are out, and he is getting some hair back. He had so many wounds that his skin was literally peeling off in sheets. His front leg, which was so swollen, infected, and riddled with bite wounds, looks great, as the new pictures show. Because of our wonderful veterinarians and their staff, Highway's wounds are almost healed. I dare say he has been happier at Greenville Animal Clinic than he has ever been in his life. Here, he has known kindness and love from the gentle people who are caring for him. He has allowed the staff to do any number of things to him, many very painful, and has been totally cooperative. He has adjusted very well to coming and going from his kennel. He is a sweet boy and seems so happy to be alive and out of danger.

Now comes the hard part. The need for Highway to stay at the vet clinic is gone. The expense is too great to have him there unnecessarily. We have got to find that special home for this boy where he will have a chance to know what it is like to be a part of a family. He will be a wonderful companion and will, no doubt, always show his appreciation for being given a second chance to be a carefree, happy doggy. No more wondering what pain awaits him each day........only running and playing in his own yard with his very own family. Help me make up for the torture that Highway has been forced to endure at the hands of the lowest of mankind. He deserves to have this opportunity.

Because of what this poor fellow has been through, we would not expect him to play well with other dogs. While he doesn't growl at all dogs when he passes them, he does growl at some. We would also not recommend that he be in a home with small children, even though he loves people. While there has been no indication that he would ever harm a small child, these are just precautionary measures that we must take. This boy needs to be an only dog for a single adult or an adult couple. He will always have some scars, but once he puts weight on his ever-so-thin frame, he, to me, will be beautiful. We also recommend, as we would do with most any of our dogs, that he attend puppy kindergarten to work on his manners and help him to be the ideal citizen.

If there is anyone who could possibly open their home and heart to our Highway, please call me immediately at 662-347-5573. Unfortunately, his time is limited. He cannot go to the shelter because it is terribly small and there are no vacant kennels. We cannot put him in with any other dogs. It would be such a shame for him to have come back from the brink of death only to be euthanized.

Last September we photographed nearly 250 horses in North Dakota that needed homes. Beautiful draft mixes, owned by a ranch that used to be in the PMU business. Finding all of them homes seemed nearly impossible, we hoped to place at least some of them. Times are tough everywhere. People are struggling through a harsh economy. Big horse states such as Texas and California are suffering from severe hay shortages. According to horse people everywhere, no one is buying horses!

We put the horses on our web site, and Facebook and started interviewing potential adopters. In 3 months we have placed 75 horses! In the next few weeks we will be delivering these horses to new homes all over the United States.

Your donations have made a huge difference. Nearly $10,000 has been donated to the Save a Horse fund in the last month. This has helped 41 lucky horses get homes, by reducing the cost of adopting. Currently there is enough in the fund for 9 more horses to receive $200 discounts. All donations to the rescue fund are going directly to the horses needing homes.
