Lyon Law School Adds Course Options to Int'l & European Law LL.M.

Lyon Law School at Université Jean Moulin Lyon III has announced it will launch eight new courses on its International and European Law LL.M. program. The courses include "Women in Law on Screen," "International Environmental Law," "European Banking Law," International Commercial Arbitration," and "Protection of Cultural Property in International Law."

Thomas M. Cooley Law School Rolls Out New LL.M. Programs

In September 2009, Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan will begin new LL.M. programs in Corporate Law and Finance and a U.S. Legal Studies LL.M. for Foreign Attorneys. A "Self-Directed" LL.M. program is also expected to begin this fall.

The law school has also planned the launch of a new LL.M. program in Insurance Law in September 2010.

University of Bayreuth in Germany to Offer New Law & Economics LL.M.

The University of Bayreuth (Universität Bayreuth) in the German state of Bavaria will be offering a new, one-year "Law and Economics" LL.M. program. The program begins in October 2009, and will be offered in German.

Applications for the new program will be accepted until September 30. Lawyers from within and outside of Germany with a first law degree will be considered.

The "Law & Economics" methodology emphasizes the relationship between economic methodology, legal issues, and human behavior.

Guardian and Times Release 2010 UK Law Rankings

Two UK daily newspapers, The Guardian and The Times , have now released their "2010" rankings of UK universities.

Cambridge and Oxford took the first and second positions (respectively) on both rankings of in the "Law" category. Other schools that appeared in the Top-10 of both lists were LSE, UCL, King's, Queen Mary, and Birmingham.

NUI Galway to Begin Economic, Social and Cultural Rights LL.M. in September

Building on its International Human Rights LL.M. program, National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway will be offering its new Economic, Social and Cultural Rights LL.M. beginning this September.

The one-year program involves two required courses - International Human Rights Law and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights - as well as a number of related electives, including "The Right to Development" and "How to Argue with an Economist."

Pace Law School to Offer Climate Change LL.M.

Pace Law School in White Plains, New York will offer a new climate change track within its Environmental Law LL.M. program beginning in the fall of 2009.

The program will offer six courses exclusively to LL.M. students: Climate Adaptive Management, Climate and Insurance, Climate and Corporate Practice, Climate Change Practicum, Disaster Law and Emergency Preparedness, and State & Regional Climate Initiatives.

City London to Begin International Commercial Law M.Jur Program

The City Law School, City University London will offer a two-year Masters in the Law (M.Jur) in International Commercial Law beginning this September.

According to the law school, the program will give students the opportunity to obtain a specialization "in more than one major area of commercial law."

City also announced plans to offer an M.Jur in International Competition Law and Maritime Law.

New York Law School to Offer Financial Services Law LL.M. This Fall

New York Law School (NYLS) has announced it will offer an LL.M. in Financial Services Law beginning in the fall of 2009. The program is open to both foreign- and US-trained lawyers.

Along with two required courses - Regulatory Policy and Advanced Research Seminar - the new LL.M. program will offer four concentrations: Asset Management, Banking, Capital Market, and International Regulation.

According to the law school, recent JD grads "with little or no background in financial services" may begin the LL.M. program after completing two prerequisite courses.

University of Reading Law School Offers Tuition Scholarships for Masters Programs

The Law School at the University of Reading (UK) is offering up to two fees-only scholarships to applicants for full-time study in their M Res (Law & Society), MA Res (Legal History), and M Res (Law) programs.

The scholarships will cover fees at the rate for UK/EU students. These two scholarships are only for the M Res programs, but there will be some research assistant and similar positions open to postgraduates on all programs.

Application deadline for the scholarships is June 30, 2009.

According to the law school, the M Res programs are similar to LL.M. programs, but are more research-oriented. The school also has LL.M. programs in International Law & World Order, European Union Law, and Advanced Legal Studies.

The University of Liverpool and their partner Laureate Online Education have announced three new online LL.M. programs - an LL.M. in International Business Law, an LL.M. in International Finance & Banking Law, and LL.M. in Technology & Intellectual Property Law.

Dundee CEPMLP Extends Deadline for Scholarship Applications

The University of Dundee�s Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law (CEPMLP) has extended the deadline for applications for the Rio Tinto Chevening Scholarships for study on the Mineral Law and Policy LL.M. program beginning this fall.

The applications are now due on May 31, 2009.

The scholarships are offered by Rio Tinto plc, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and CEPMLP. They cover academic tuition fees and living expenses for 12 months. They are open to eligible nationals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mexico, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Peru, Russia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

LL.M. Funding Opportunities through Anti-Poverty Project at Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch University Law Faculty in Stellenbosch, South Africa has invited prospective students interested in its LL.M. program to apply for bursaries and research assistantships associated with its "Combating Poverty, Homelessness and Socio-Economic Vulnerability under the Constitutional Dispensation" research project.

Students interested conducting their research within the project during their LL.M. (or LL.D.) studies can receive financial support of R 83,000 per year (R 105,000 for LL.D. students).

According to the law faculty, the project "encourages new and creative thinking in all areas of the law related to overcoming economic and social marginalisation," and is coordinated by Professors Sandra Leibenberg and AJ van der Walt.

Applications for the financial support are due on June 30 for students wishing to begin in January 2010.

University of Surrey Announces International Commercial Law LL.M.

The School of Law at the University of Surrey in Guildford, England has announced the launch of a new International Commercial Law LL.M. program set to begin in September 2009 (pending validation).

According to the university, students on the new program "will develop a critical appreciation of the law and policy of EC external trade, gain a deeper knowledge of the regulatory frameworks and criminal law provisions which impact upon Commercial organisations and be able to understand and evaluate how the law operates in both corporate and personal insolvency."

Strathclyde Confirms Two New LL.M. Programs Beginning in September

Strathclyde University Law School in Glasgow, Scotland has confirmed it will launch two new LL.M. programs - one in International Economic Law; and another in International Law and Sustainable Development - beginning in September 2009.

The International and Sustainable Development LL.M. is designed to provide "a solid grounding in the structures, rules and norms of key institutions of global economic governance," and their impact on sustainable development locally and internationally.

Meanwhile, the International Economic Law LL.M. is geared towards students developing careers in international organizations, international law firms, governmental or non-governmental organizations with an international trade and business or commercial law focus.

Both programs also include a "field" dissertation - an "opportunity to put knowledge and skills into practice, and to base the dissertation around real-world issues," and allow students to study non-law subjects (like economics and international management) alongside their law courses.

UCLA Reopens LL.M. Applications, Creates New "Transition" Program

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law has announced it will reopen the application process for the 2009-2010 academic year to accept 20 additional grads of US law schools, including deferred hires. According to the law school, the action was prompted by "the changing employment situation for graduates of U.S. law schools."

Applications are now due on May 29, 2009.

Incoming students can choose to take the law school's new "Transition to Practice" LL.M. program, that will "replicate significant parts of the learning that comes in the first year of practice, but in a controlled learning environment."

"Through the new Transition to Practice program, which will focus on experiential learning and skills, law school graduates and deferred hires will be able to expand on their legal education and develop additional legal skills during this transition period," said UCLA Law School Dean Michael H. Schill.

The new Transition to Practice program will include "capstone courses" that will focus on practice-oriented projects, include part-time externships within corporate legal departments, as well as clinical simulations, where students work with real legal problems in a controlled environment that permits reflection and generalization of lessons learned.

The program will also include a workshop series focused on "practical issues that confront new lawyers, ranging from how to define a work-product to understanding a client's business and goals, and handling practical problems of ethics and confidentiality."

WCL to Host Annual Summer Legal English Institute

The International Legal Studies Program (ILSP) at American University Washington College of Law in Washington DC will be hosting its annual Summer Legal English Institute (SLEI). The institute aims to introduce foreign lawyers and incoming LL.M. students to legal English concepts.

The SLEI is offered from May 18-21 for an intensive 4-day course, and from August 3-August 20, 2009 for a three-week course. SLEI is open to anyone who wishes to enroll, regardless of whether they attend another law school, are a J.D., LL.M., or S.J.D. student, or a practicing lawyer.

Annual Scholarship Opportunities Available to LSE LL.M. Students

Like every year, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Law Department is once again offering a number of scholarship opportunities available to incoming students to the 2009-2010 LL.M. program.

Marchant Foundation Scholarship - a 10,000 GBP scholarship, with preference given to students from India, the European Union, or the United Kingdom in financial need.

Margaret Bennett Scholarship for North African Women - a 5,000 GBP scholarship for female LL.M. students from North Africa.

Laura Cha (Shi Mei Lun) Scholarship - 2 scholarships of 12,000 GBP each to residents of China.

Olive Stone Memorial Scholarship - a scholarship fund awarded to qualified female LL.M. student(s) who are 25 years old or over.

Successful scholarship applicants will have already been accepted into an LL.M. program at the LSE, and will considered based on the information they provided in online application materials. Selection for all of the above scholarship awards will take place in May.

University of London External System to Offer LL.M. Program in Lebanon

The University of London's External System will offer a part-time LL.M. program in Lebanon with the assistance of the American University of Technology (AUT) near Beirut.

The program will begin this year, and will managed jointly by the law faculties of Queen Mary University London (QMUL) and University College London (UCL). The face-to-face courses will be taught by visiting University of London faculty and local professors, and online facilities will be provided by both AUT and the University of London.

Examinations will be administered twice a year by the British Council.

The University of London is also offering a Postgraduate Diploma in Laws and Postgraduate Certificate in Laws in partnership with AUT.
