University of Heidelberg Announces New Corporate Restructuring LL.M.

The law faculty at Ruprecht-Karls-Universitaet in Heidelberg, Germany has announced a new LL.M. program in Corporate Restructuring. The new course begins in the winter semester of the 2008-09 academic year, and welcomes applications from German and foreign lawyers. LL.M. Day in Frankfurt Planned for October 11

On October 11, e-fellows will be hosting an "LL.M. Day" information event in Frankfurt, Germany for prospective LL.M. students. The organizers also expect representatives from a handful of international law firms, including Clifford Chance, Freshfields, and Linklaters.
The event will include a presentation, workshops, and the chance to meet law firms and schools offering LL.M. programs in the United States, Britain, and Spain.
There is no cost for the event, but interested students should sign up by October 5.

Applications Open for UNICRI Int'l Crime & Justice LL.M. in Turin

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the University of Turin, Faculty of Law, have announced the third edition of the LL.M. in International Crime and Justice begins on November 17, 2008 and runs until mid-July 2009.
The course is composed of two modules. The first is an eLearning unit, running from November to January. This is followed by on-campus lectures in Turin, Italy from February to July 2009.
The deadline for applications is October 7, 2008. All courses will be taught in English.

Application Deadline for Deutsche Bank ILF Scholarship Is July 31

Applications for the Deutsche Bank scholarship for an incoming LL.M. Finance student at the Institute for Law and Finance (ILF) at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany are due on July 31, 2008. The scholarship will be awarded to one incoming student who has passed the first and/or second German State Examination.

The scholarship covers a full year's tuition fees (15,000 Euros).

Chicago's DePaul University to Start International Law LL.M. in January 2009

City University London Announces New Int'l Dispute Resolution LL.M.

The City Law School at City University London has announced it will begin a new LL.M. program in International Dispute Resolution for the 2008-09 academic year.
The school has also announced it is expanding student intake on its International Commercial Law LL.M. program by 15 places (due to high demand).

Online Chinese Business Law LL.M. at Open University of Hong Kong

The Open University of Hong Kong has announced it will be offering an online LL.M. program in Chinese Business Law from October 2008. The course will be offered in English, and the university says it expects the program to take students 1.5 to 2 years to finish.

Five Full-Tution LL.M. Scholarships at American University WCL

The International Legal Studies Program (ILSP) at American University's Washington College of Law (WCL) has announced that five full-tuition scholarships will be available to incoming LL.M. students. The scholarships will be funded by the ILSP Alumni Fund.

The application deadline for students beginning in Spring 2009 is October 1, 2008.

The Times Publishes 2009 UK Law School Rankings

British daily newspaper The Times has published its Good University Guide 2009 . Notable changes on this year's Law School Ranking from last year include the London School of Economics (LSE) and King's College London (KCL) moving up to the 3rd and 4th behind Cambridge and Oxford. Leicester made a big jump to 8th place (from 21st place last year). Queen Mary moves up 4 spots to 12th. The top 20 ranked universities are listed below. To see the rankings in full, click here .

New English Foreign Lawyer Transfer Rules Go Into Effect on September 1

Britain's Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) announced this week that revisions to its guidelines for foreign lawyers interested in becoming solictors in England and Wales will go into effect on September 1, 2008. The changes include a stipulation that all foreign lawyers must have at least one year's experience in English law before they can become solicitors.
The other major change is a "new guidance" for considering requests for exemption from the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT).
The changes were supposed go into effect in March, but was delayed by six months.
SRA Chief Executive Antony Townsend said the changes "are designed to protect the public interest, to fair to all solicitors, and to continue to allow appropriately experience lawyers who qualified abroad to come and practise in England and Wales as fully recognised England and Wales solicitors."

Northwestern Law School Announces New Two-Year J.D. Program

Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois has announced it will begin a new, two-year juris doctor (J.D.) in May 2009. The accelerated program will give around 40 students a chance to obtain a J.D. in five semesters instead of six.

Only a few other U.S. law schools, including Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, offer accelerated J.D. programs.

Application material will become available on September 1, 2008. Applications for the inaugural program will be due on January 1, 2009.

New EU Law and Comparative Legal Studies LL.M. at Essex

The  Department of Law at the University of Essex in Colchester, England will begin a new LL.M. program in EU Law and Comparative Legal Studies this autumn. It will be the department's eighth LL.M. program.
The university's philosophy department is also introducing a new Master's program in Continental Philosophy and Health Care Law this autumn.

New International Environment Law LL.M. at Kent Law School

Kent Law School in Canterbury, England will be adding a new International Environmental Law LL.M. program beginning in September 2008. According to the law school, the new LL.M. "takes an academically critical view of the operation of international environmental law and policy, and features a particular focus on topics that are perceived to be controversial or in a state of evolution." New Environmental & Land Use Law LL.M. at University of Florida

The University of Florida Levin College of Law in Gainesville, Florida has announced it will offer a new LL.M. program in Environmental and Land Use Law beginning this fall.  Students of the new, one-year LL.M. program can tailor-make their program to suit their particular interests, and can participate in a summer abroad program in Costa Rica.

Florida's Stetson University Offers Online Elder Law LL.M.

Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida, will again offer its online LL.M. program in Elder Law. This program, which began in 2007, is a three-semester, 24-credit course for lawyers who wish to complete additional graduate work in Elder Law.
Applicants for admission to the LL.M. program must have received their first law degree from a U.S. law school or a law school approved by the appropriate authority in a country other than the United States. Foreign applicants must have received a law degree from a law school approved by the appropriate authority in their respective countries.

UC Berkeley (Boalt) Announces Accelerated Summer LL.M. Program

Berkeley Law at the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall) has announced a new accelerated Summer LL.M. program for International Students.  The program, which begins in the summer of 2009, allows students to earn an LL.M. by attending classes over two consecutive summers. Each summer term is three months long.
According to the law school, the program is "ideally suited for individuals who are already employed and able to take shorter leaves from their careers and home."
The application deadline for the 2009-2010 program is August 1, 2008.
