Ciaran Quinn is kinda sorta (but not by much) Irish. That doesn’t really matter. What matters is that I got to meet him mere days after he was born. I arrived at Lindsay and Andrew’s home in Philadelphia (I’m not good enough to know neighborhoods – it was a beautiful street kinda sorta near Penn Treaty Park). I was welcomed by the new parents and their first children: Dudley, a 6 year old Schnauzer mix, and Stella, a 5 year old Collie mix.

It seemed like only yesterday (2009) that I was photographing the two love birds in their recently engaged excitement in LOVE Park. It was fantastic to see them again all grown up with marriage and puppies and house and baby!

I hardly believe it myself but I was there for hours and Ciaran was wide-eyed for pretty much all of it. He was taking everything in.

Don’t you just love this nursery? I could do an entire post on this room alone – including the handmade maps (Neverland, Wonderland, and Land of Oz), whimsical mobile, and fluffy clouds all over the walls.

He was so amazingly alert. Just 10 days old.

It was a lovely day so we took a walk to a local park to see if that would help put him to sleep. And it did.

…Until we got home.

This was truly a lifestyle session for the entire family. I loved it!

It’s something pretty awesome when I ask a couple how they mat and the groom-to-be responds, “It was 8 years ago in college. I saw her across the room and I was thunderstruck.” The relationship didn’t flourish right away but they became close, spending a lot of time on the Campus Activities Team at Villanova University.

Lives went on and he moved to New York. The reconnected at a New Year’s Eve party three years ago and sparks flew. Of course he had to kiss her at midnight. They did the long distance thing for a while until he moved down here.

I met up with them on the insanely gorgeous campus at Villanova University for their engagement photography session. The day was overcast and surprisingly chilly but these two were incredible.

There is an archway on campus. Legend has it that anyone who kisses under it will be together forever.

I got quite the tour. There’s also “The Oreo”, a big black and white circular sculpture in the middle of the place.

Jamie grew up in Maine and goes back to visit her family often. She was there last Labor Day and wanted John to come up but he had already made plans with a friend for a concert. She drove up that night and he flew in on the red eye to get there in the morning. There is a beautiful lighthouse in town where her mother told her to go to run an errand. She arrived there to find John with a ring. It’s a pretty classy move to show up at the most beautiful spots in your hometown to pop the question and somehow arrange for the weather to be absolutely perfect. He designed her ring based on her grandmother’s ring.

These two are goofballs. Some conversations are held in animal noises. Cats are currently trending.

And so studly too! I think it was around this time that we discussed their frequent 90s dance parties, sometimes when no music is playing. Jamie had NKOTB playing through her head during the session.

We had a great time and I am so looking forward to seeing them again this year for their Philadelphia wedding.

A German weight loss company contacted me a few months ago about a photoshoot. After realizing that this wasn’t a scam, I connected with Ole, one of their many success stories. Ole happened to be living in Philadelphia and had lost 30 pounds through the program. Of course I had to ask him about it. He said he had been a bit hungry at times but it was actually pretty easy and not so bad at all.

We met at Valley Green Inn in the Wissahickon Park to snap a few pictures to send to Almased (or in English if you'd prefer).

Philadelphia Wedding Venue Spotlight | Morris House Hotel

There is a secret garden of a wedding venue smack dab in Philadelphia and you would never know about it unless you were looking for it. It’s called the Morris House Hotel (home to M Restaurant) – a sweet boutique bed and breakfast built in the Revolutionary era and exudes colonial elegance.

Inside there are 15 rooms, a library, fireplaces, comfy sofas, and a superb staff.

But the real highlight is the courtyard. The courtyard garden can host a wedding that you’d never expect downtown: greenery, historic charm (226 years worth), fountains, flowers, ivy, bricks, and steps away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s absolutely perfect for the couple who wants an escape to a beautiful garden wedding but doesn’t want to leave downtown Philadelphia.

The “tent” is really just a tent by name. The ceiling is as clear as glass, giving you a great, open feeling with sights to the high rises around. I have Synergetic to thank for providing the uplighting (just wait til you see it at night!) and Beautiful Blooms for the centerpieces.

It’s an awesome space. If you end up at Morris House Hotel for your wedding; give me a call!

Philadelphia Engagement Photographer | Kelly Drive | Carla + Ben

There’s something that happened during my session with Carla and Ben that hasn’t happened before: we were talking and laughing so much that I didn’t even get the juicy details about their relationship – how they met (perhaps gardening but I could have made that up) or even how the proposal went down. Sheesh!

What I can say is that these two are magnificent human beings. We scheduled the session along Kelly Drive for primo springtime nature. I swear it’s one of the most beautiful roads in the entire city. They live in New York (Ben is from the area; Lower Merion to be precise!) and we had originally planned the session for a week or two later. I was worried that we were going to lose our blossoms if we waited so I asked if they could come down stat. I saw them that weekend and we had a blast.

They brought along Salvatore, their rescued Corgi Pitt mix. A canine that I frankly consider far more regal than these two. Carla and Ben are really big into animal rescue groups, Carla running half marathons to raise money for them.

After we assured Carla that there was no third rail to worry about, we ventured onto the tracks.

A strange thing was happening while we were there. It was a big trance/techno party, complete with DJs spinning, food, drinks, hula hooping, tents, kiddie pools, bunting flags, and a lot of color.

They are total goofballs. To give you some indication, they have super hero names: Meldoff (the evil one) and Branman (the good one), combinations of their last names.

And adorable.

But really mostly goofballs. How many couples bring mustaches to an engagement session?!!

As a bonus, I got to get in on the action. Rawr!

It was just too good. I am so excited for their wedding in June at Quarry Hill Farm!

The latest Philly Current magazine has spread all over Philadelphia. I’m particularly excited about this one, the Outside issue.

The cover feature offers up a great article on the Philly Union soccer team. I felt pretty special getting some alone time with players Jack McInerney and the Farfan twins (Michael and Gabriel). Watching the game from the press sidelines a few days later was awesome. The dedicated fan base, the Sons of Ben, put on as much of a show as the team.

My favorite shoot with this magazine so far has to be the other feature in this issue, a gorgeous 5 page spread (+ table of contents) of vintage cars across the decades and one very sexy model. The team on this shoot absolutely rocked it. Bettie Page Clothing provided the wardrobe, the Roxborough Ridge Runners handed over the keys, and Emily of Cheekadee Makeup Artists and Danielle of Crimson Hair Studio transformed Laurel into three lovely ladies set against era cars and Philly backdrops. I am in love with what we got!

We had a few days of strange 80+ degree days and then came the day for Jen and Joe’s wedding and Glen Foerd Mansion. It was chilly and damp, which really only made the grand estate feel more proper somehow. The beautiful venue on the Delaware River was vibrant with green and overflowing with history and charm. It’s a place Jen has known practically her whole life.

Despite coordinating a wedding and four very little ones, Jen looked radiant.

They had a first look before the ceremony. It was great to wander the grounds and spend some quiet time together.

As I said, Glen Foerd is beautiful and oh-so-charming.

The ceremony was held in the drawing room, just the right size to hold the couple’s intimate 35 guests. This room with lush red tapestries, gilded mirrors and chandeliers, and piano player in the background felt perfect. Governor Ed Rendell, a close family friend, presided over the ceremony.

There were little ones everywhere. The couple opted for a low key dinner reception and I stayed through the cocktail hour to get a few images of the day’s revelry.

Congratulations, Jen and Joe, on your happy day! Here’s to many, many more!

Today is a very important day. It is my little girl’s 10th birthday. 10. 10!

My scruffy, affectionate, happy, cuddly pup has gone from a few pounds of fluff to this tough little beast who has seen me through a myriad of moves, heartaches, states, wardrobes, tears, laughter, and a whole lotta fun.

All through college I visited the local pet shop* to get my puppy fix. What could create more serotonin than floppy, bouncy puppies? I would pet, play, “awww”, and go back to campus.

I am not the kind of person who makes snap judgments. I calculate and plan. I rationalize everything.

A strange thing happened in 2003. I fell in love.

I walked into that pet shop and asked to play with an adorable Jack Russell Terrier / Beagle mix. In 3 years of puppy fun, I had never fallen so hard for a bunch of fur. I had already named her Emma. I gave them $25 to hold her for 24 hours as I thought about it. I came back an hour before closing the next day, armed with toys, food, a crate, a leash, and as much knowledge as I could cram about Jacks and Beagles, and asked for my dog.

Despite the epilepsy, poor bladder control, excessive barking, selective hearing, and ninja-like thievery around food, I don’t regret it one bit. My most impulsive purchase is the best I’ve ever made.

I have a hard time believing that Si and Tanard ever stop laughing. They can’t even fight without laughing – he will put his finger up her nose. How’s that for romance? They do everything together. From what I can tell, this consists of going for walks, going to bars and restaurants, and watching the League. Tanard will come up with quotes from just about anywhere so you’d better be up on your pop culture references.

Speaking of, these two met in a bar about two years ago. He was wearing a Ninja Turtles shirt; she was in plaid (which Tanard still confuses with flannel). He stared at her for a while, mesmerized, but was too shy to make a move. A friend intervened on his behalf and she walked over to him. Their evening went on to discuss TMNT and short torsos. It was love.

Their family includes two twelve year old pugs, Tabor and Digby.

We did their engagement session at Si’s family’s property in Yorklyn, Delaware. The grounds are gorgeous and will be even more impressive this weekend for the wedding.

I can’t wait to see the big barn transformed into a reception.

I was very touched that I got to share part of their wedding gifts with each other. They chose an inscription on each other’s ring and opened them during the engagement session to read what the other had picked. I decided to wait until the wedding day to see the emotional inscriptions.

This weekend’s fete will certainly be something no one forgets. I can’t wait to see the guests’ reaction to such an awesome wedding.

I am humbled and pleased as punch to see Kate and Yong’s Philadelphia City Hall wedding (which occurred during the Occupy Philly movement) featured today, International Workers Day.

It is hard to believe that it was only 8 months ago that I was contacted by Colleen and Karl about their wedding and I have since gotten to follow along on the most exciting moments: from their engagement session to their beautiful wintery Bellevue wedding to now, Colleen’s maternity session.

I went back to their beautiful home in Bryn Mawr. This was 10 days before baby was due. Colleen was still working, saying that it had been an incredibly easy pregnancy – no swelling, fatigue, actual maternity clothes, or even cravings. She credits this to Belly Pilates and looks incredible! How do I get so lucky with these hot mommas?!

I was so excited to see her again. You’ll probably remember them from their thunderous Best of 2012 win!

They haven’t found out if it’s a boy or a girl and they were still undecided on names!

Please note the elephant in the back – Karl has a thing for them. You’ll see them all over the house in big and little ways.

And tell me you remember Samson! He is still a puppy with big puppy eyes but he’s now sooo much bigger!

Nope, not Colleen’s sister, that’s her MOM! I was really glad we had her there to play with us.

I feel so lucky to have met this extraordinary and beautiful family. I can’t wait to see it grow. Baby Wagner is a few days late now and everyone is eager with anticipation for the news!

I am always inspired by couples who have been together for years and years. They must know each other so well, every idiosyncrasy and every eyelash. Sandy and Yohanes have been together for 7 years. They met at church when she arrived as a new member. He asked for her phone number a few weeks later.

For the longest time I felt like this engagement session was a fantasy. We were supposed to do it last October at the Jersey shore. If you remember, there was a bit of bad weather that completely halted our plans. And then Yohanes had a bug bite on his chin that lasted two months. I was wondering if I would ever actually meet these mysterious two.

On a very windy day in April it finally came together at Longwood Gardens.

I love Sandy’s split-second faces!

He popped the question last year when he picked her up from work one day. She notes that he didn’t get down on one knee (a little hard in a car). The official proposal came this January when his family was invited to her family’s house.

Yohanes is a sushi chef. They love cooking together and get quite outdoorsy going camping and fishing. She is a biologist studying RNA.

Sandy and Yohanes wanted to try this shot and you have no idea how long it took the three of us to figure out how to make it work.

After her sister’s wedding this year, Sandy and Yohanes will be married in 2014 in Indonesia, where their families are from. Congratulations, you two! Happy wishes for the next seven years and many, many more after that!

Chester County Engagement Photographer | Longwood Gardens | Jennifer + Mark

Many people who meet at school do so over beer in some bar. Not Jennifer and Mark. They’re far classier than that nonsense. They met at a wine tasting at Oxford. Mark is very, very into wine (he was president of the Oxford University Wine Society) and they promise to divulge some great wineries to me for my future travels. This is often a focal point for their travels as they both love wine and cooking.

Though they both live in England, Jennifer grew up in Penn Valley and so they came back for their engagement session (and their wedding at the Atrium at the Curtis Center this August). It was a blustery but bright day when we wandered around Longwood Gardens for their pictures.

They had been together about 7 years when they moved into a flat together. That day, after the movers had cleared out, Mark proposed. He had known that Jennifer wanted to pick out her own ring. She choose an absolutely stunning oval diamond with a halo in a rose gold setting. It was spectacular!

They had spent two years in a long distance relationship while she was in Liverpool for a job. It was two hours away by train. He knew that if they were able to survive that together, they were good to go.

I’m sure you noticed her fantastic red lips (makeup by Cheekadee) but did you check out her vintage seamed tights? Sooo good.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store at the Curtis Center later this summer for their wedding. Hurry back to this side of the pond soon!

Wedding dress shopping in NYC

Liz, my best friend, came into town last week from Chicago and we had a fun-filled trip of being truly girly. We bought makeup, she gave me an introduction on how to actually use it, and we went to New York City to really indulge in being a bride: dress shopping. I had the day planned with a whirlwind trip to three bridal salons, dinner, and a show on Broadway (btw, Matilda was awesome!).

We started at Lovely, a place that lives up to its name. The walls were decked out in Elizabeth Messina prints, big chalkboards, beautiful windows, and softness. It was intimate, comfortable, and well, lovely. Jacqueline walked me through aisles of tulle, silk, satin, chiffon, lace, beading, shimmer, and every pretty thing imaginable. I gave some yeses and nos and was whisked away to a dressing area to try on my first wedding dress. It was pretty easy to decide on ones that just weren't for me and exciting to find a few that just might be. There was no hard sell, no restrictions on pictures, no pushiness on the most expensive piece of clothing ever. It was a fantastic experience! Jacqueline was gentle and encouraging. At the end, I found out that the gown I liked the most must have been one of the least expensive in the entire shop. Score!

Still, I'm not one to make snap judgments so I took my notes and went on my way to #2. You may have heard of this New York bridal institution: Kleinfeld. I have never actually watched an entire episode of Say Yes to The Dress (gasp!). We checked in at the front desk for my appointment. The place was big, ornate, and a little intimidating. We sat in the lobby with about a dozen other people, waiting our turn for a consultant. Sales associates were walking around to each group to discuss Kleinfeld's paper line. A friendly face came up and introduced herself as Brittany. She led me to a tiny dressing room with bright lights and mirrors. We talked over what I liked and wandered out into the massive showroom which was buzzing with other associates and excited brides. I went back to my room to change into a Kleinfeld's silk robe while Brittany pulled dresses for me. She brought me some curveballs just to see what I thought and I was glad to expand my horizons. After all, she's the professional who sees all shapes and sizes of bodies every day. Some of my favorites that day were her picks. Again, just a fun time playing dress up and no hard sell. I left conflicted as I saw some gowns that could really work for me.

We were feeling woozy from the hours of activity and lack of food as we made our way to #3, the Bridal Garden. It's a nonprofit shop inside a nondescript building that collects samples and overstocked gowns from designers and shops and sells them at a very discounted price. The proceeds go towards education for disadvantaged children. It's a great concept and I'm very glad my future sister-in-law, Nora, gave me the insider tip on this place. We were welcomed in without much fanfare and led over to the dresses that were about my size. I was told to go through the rack of dresses and pull anything that I wanted to try on. They were all different styles and in varying condition – some were pristine, others were slightly dirty or frayed or somehow damaged. I helped myself to a small dressing room and quickly breezed through them without finding anything in particular. It’s a shame I don’t live closer or I would be there every week or so to check out new arrivals.

It was a great albeit exhausting day. I have found myself drawn to beautiful, simple lines that feel feminine without completely taking over my 5’0” frame.

After a lot of thought, I think I might just know the dress for me. Through an online search, I have seen the dress that, to me, says “woman”:

Montgomery County Maternity Photographer | Deena

Who is 8 months pregnant and still goes to the gym at least three times a week? Deena, that's who. That is why she still fits into her jeans (albeit unbuttoned), still wears her wedding ring, and still looks absolutely amazing. I'm in awe. I was so happy to spend some time with her and Drew at their house in Conshohocken to get maternity pictures and revel in this exciting time for them.

This is their first little one. She's a girl due in early May and will be named Sadie Lola. I can't wait to meet her!

Their purple nursery is pretty much all ready. It's jam packed with all kinds of stuff from friends and family - clothes from newborn to toddlerhood. They haven't really bought a single scrap of clothing for the wee one. Apparently that happens.

It was great to have Drew there so that I could get images of the two just-about-to-be parents. It's a kind of love that you don't see during engagement sessions, weddings, or later family sessions. There is something very, very special about a couple on the verge of their first baby. There's a comfort, excitement, nervousness, and caring that made me feel lucky to be in their presence and capturing this.

Their other babies, Kiley, Chester, and Darby have already been well integrated into the family. Deena is huge in the animal rescue scene. If you're looking to adopt a new fur baby (especially Pits), let me know and I'll put you in touch with her. She's often doing work with ACCT Philly.

Drew is highly involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and heads up a big fundraiser every year.

I can't wait to see them as parents. They are going to be incredible. This is a wonderful family and I feel lucky to consider them friends.

This was an engagement session that was supposed to happen since last August. I am almost amazed that I finally saw Sandy and Yohanes the other day at Longwood Gardens. It was well worth the wait!
