On April 21st, which happens to be Record Store Day, Switchfoot will unveil their limited edition remix album ‘Vice Re-Verses’. Nobody else then Paper Route, Owl City’s Adam Young, Photek and Darren King were chosen to remix songs from the album ‘Vice Verses’ plus the remix of their new single ‘Afterlife’.

The band is ready to announce an exclusive remix contest, sponsored by Ultimate Ears, to remix the new single which will be included on the new album. If you have not taken a closer look at the contest, please do so now here.

Today they have also announced their upcoming North American tour with special guest The Rocket Summer. The tour will start on March 22nd till August 18th. In the following weeks a ticket pre-sale will be held at their official website, www.switchfoot.com.

Darren King (from MuteMath) also remixed “Yet” for Switchfoot – and did an AMAZING job. I’m excited to see what he’s done for this release. Photek is a British record producer and DJ, who won a Grammy award in 2011 for “Best Remix”.

HONORABLE MENTION: Collide – by Jon Foreman

Even though “Collide” has never been officially released (or even studio recorded as far as we know) this list would certainly would not be complete without it. The simple, pure nature of the tune, the heartfelt confessions, the honesty of the lyrics – all of these components lend “Collide” such strength. It’s no wonder, in our live recording, you can hear a member of the audience go “Awwww…” after one of the verses.

Favorite Line: “The world is full of fool’s gold and sparks that catch the eye, yours are the only pair of lips, that I want pressed up next to mine, there’s lot of pretty faces, but I’ve got one on my mind, I’m waiting for the day when we collide”

5. Yet

The stubbornness of this song, the refusal to give up when everything seems so hopeless, so out of control, is something that isn’t addressed in a lot of love songs. We don’t like to look at the ugly side of things, we want to focus on the sparks, flowers and excitement. But love is a fight, and this song perfectly embodies the absolute tenaciousness that is needed to keep love alive. It’s shockingly honest and personal – but then, what else would we expect from Jon?

Favorite Line: “If it doesn’t break your heart is it love? No, if it doesn’t break your heart it’s not enough, it’s when you’re breaking down with your insides coming out, that’s when you find out what your heart is made of, and you haven’t lost me yet”

Jon’s Song Story:

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken.” -CS Lewis

I like old instruments, often better than newer versions. It’s hard to describe, feels like old guitars bring a life and a story to the conversation. When you write songs on an old guitar the guitar tends to speak up for itself from time to time. “Yet” was written on an old National steel guitar that I bought at a pawnshop on tour. It was a finger-picking tune played with a slide and very unlike the version on the record. Tim and I both thought that the folk interpretation of the song didn’t really rise to the potential of the melody or the lyric. We spent a day at my house trying to find the right instrument to carry the song. We tracked the acoustic and electric guitar that day. We stumbled on the bass intro later. We were singing the final version of the song down and I felt like the end bit wasn’t quite right. It needed a bit more to tell the story. So I wrote a new lyric to go over top of the chorus chord changes.

The song is about hope. Hope is always reaching towards the future, reaching for what has not yet come to pass. Once the hope is attained, it can no longer be called hope. Hope isn’t the sort of thing you can pull out of your pocket and show off. Hope is a “holding on” of sorts, an expectant belief, a desire as of yet unfulfilled. I wrote this song from a really dark place, looking for some form of hope. And maybe searching for hope is a form of hope in itself. There’s a moment of honesty when your mask drops, when you can no longer pretend to have it all together. When this pretense is gone you breathe in your first real breath. When you are no longer pretending to be something you’re not, you’re left with a truly honest assessment of the situation. Very little is left, “Faith, hope, and love remain. But the greatest of these is love.”

4. Love Isn’t Made

We all know that Jon’s songs are intensely personal, that he’s writing from his own life – but that is particularly clear in this song. The lyrics are a narrative, telling a story of being far from home, missing someone to a distraction. I love the visuals, but I LOVE the conclusion of the musings even more. Love isn’t made. Love can’t be processed on an assembly line. Love can’t be ordered at the drive up window. The concept of love doesn’t fit into our cheap, quick, fast, now society. “How had we forgotten… love isn’t made.”

Favorite Line: “I felt so lonely, and I knew all night, I’d never find a face that could understand, how much I miss you now”

3. In My Arms

I love the way this song was recorded. The soft, almost whispered vocals make the song feel very personal, very private, very real. It plays out like more of a confession – a longing for the comfort of the one you love – physically and emotionally. The symbolic use of the ocean and shore is absolutely beautiful. The quiet of the song brings to mind the visual of someone sitting on the beach at low tide, watching the waves, introspective and lonely.

Favorite Line: “We are not one thing, we’re drawn here together, my ocean and me”

2. Head Over Heels (In This Life)

“Head Over Heels” is a classic Jon Foreman love song – equal parts pain and beauty. Equally honest and hopeful. There’s no contradiction here; in some sense, Jon’s songs mirror the very nature of love itself – the agony walking hand in hand with the beauty. The troubles balancing with the triumph. The flower and the thorn.

Favorite Line: “In this life, I’m stubborn to the core, in this life, I’ve been burning after more, we both know what these open arms are for, you’re everything that’s fair, in this life, you’re my only one”

Jon’s Song Story:

This is an honest love song. Love is not a silk flower – always bright, with artificially whitened teeth and a fake tan. No, love is a fight. Love is what happens when you’ve been hurt and you want to quit. Love is what happens when you decide not to. Love is not the beginning of the story but the ending. Perhaps the thirty-minute sitcom has done a disservice to the sheer magnitude of what love is.

1. On Fire

This song will make your heart ache. From the very beginning, the opening notes of the piano, there is a raw vulnerability, a barely concealed ache that is actually tangible. The desperation of the vocals, underscored by the plaintive beauty of the music has made this song Switchfoot’s finest love song – indeed, probably even one of their best songs of all time. As beautiful as this song is on the album, the song breathes a new breath live, with the audience singing along on an extended bridge. Need an example?  Watch the following video – it will always be one of my FAVORITE Switchfoot concert moments:

Jon’s Song Story:

Daniel Heavenwrad, a friend of mine from Canada, came out to California and stayed at my place for a day. We went out for pizza, wrote a couple of Remy Zero-ish songs, and called it a night. In the morning, about an hour before I was going to drop him off at the train station, this song flew out. We threw it down, I burned a CD for Dan and we raced to the station. This song is so personal- it feels great to play live. On a good night, I feel like I can just throw myself into this song and drift off over the crowd through the PA.
