Is there a restaurant you have always wanted to visit? Is there a particular shop that you want to point out to others? Say hello to the new favourite button in our app.

The button works quite simply:

• Open the local.ch app
• Search for an entry – for instance, a pizzeria in Basel
• Highlight the entry with the small star at the top right. That’s it

Now you can find your favourites under the “Around” button. If you don’t know where to go for lunch, then why not check this list. It displays all your favourites and shows you, for instance, how far away the restaurant is.

And there’s more: you can see how often the restaurant, shop or bar has been added to people’s favourites. This give you an indication of how popular a location is.

We also have other innovations on top of that:

• Address Book You have a friend’s mobile number, but now want to add the address and landline? Click on Contacts in the local.ch app and the app will do it for you. This function is now even more convenient and stable
• Logos: if a shop has a logo, we display it directly in the results list. The map view also displays logos.
• All symbols are now displayed in high-resolution retina quality (iPhone 4 & 4S).
• Speed: despite the new functions, the app has become 37% faster (manually timed).
• We have also added some nicer looking icons in the “near search” section

We have been taken with the operating system since the start of the Windows Phone: it is fast, easy to use and attractively designed. In the Lumia 800, there is now also a stylish device in the market (comprehensive test at neuerdings.com). The Lumia 800 can be purchased in the Swisscom Online-Shop for instance.

We have given our app an update to allow you to benefit from the latest functions. Below are the detailed features:

• The local.ch app has been given a more attractive and clearer layout. This makes it faster and easier to operate.
• The new local.ch branding is live.
• Special entries of our customers are now displayed at the top of the app.
• Contacts are integrated better (we now use the API of the latest Windows Phone update “Mango”.
• The emergency numbers are now displayed correctly.
• Many other bug fixes and improvements

Moving house equals stress: packing boxes, emptying drawers, packing more boxes, dismantling furniture, creative cooking to clear out food cupboards, settling the ensuing upset stomach, moving boxes into the new apartment, unpacking boxes, assembling furniture, unpacking more boxes, dropping from exhaustion and wishing everything was over. More than enough reason for local.ch to relieve you of at least some of the relocation stress. At einfach-ummelden.ch, you can now give your new address to anyone who needs to know from the comfort of your possibly not-yet-unpacked couch. Just one visit to our website and we’ll inform not only the essential services, such as health insurance and utility suppliers, but also your magazine and newspaper subscriptions, customer cards and business contacts. No tedious repeat emailing to numerous addresses – local.ch takes over and passes on your change of address to everyone who needs it.

As we are currently testing and expanding this service, it is available initially in German and French only. We hope to provide it in Italian and English soon.
For the protection of our users and to ensure that we are actually dealing with the person who is moving, we compare your details with the entry of your old address in our directory. This means that before the change of address is passed on, you are sent a text message to the telephone number saved under your entry at local.ch. Only when we have received your confirmation do we notify the addressees selected by you.

If you have not saved a telephone number in our directory, you still have the option to use einfach-ummelden.ch. Go to the website and have a look: a relocation is bound to be on the cards at some stage and then you will be well prepared, thanks to local.ch. Give yourself more time for the important things when moving – packing your boxes, for instance.
Talking of moving: that’s in store for me too at the local.ch blog. I will continue to plaster the internet, but with NZZ and no longer here. It has been a pleasure for me to keep you updated on the news at local.ch, to read your feedback and to exchange views. After a month of reading more than 500 comments in four languages, we’ve finally decided who will receive a share of the CHF 5,000 we have set aside to make their Christmas wishes come true. Choosing the winners wasn’t easy because there were so many great wishes, and the task was made even more difficult because of the many touching, personal statements we read. We were especially delighted by the fact that so many of you (see Sevi (comment 66) in the German Blog-Post, and Aryan (comment 134) and SK (comment 115) in the French Blog-Post) wanted to help others not as fortunate as yourselves.

This being the case, we decided to place our gifts in several different “sacks”. One very large sack, intended to benefit as many people as possible, contains CHF 20,000 and is going to the Winterhilfe Schweiz winter aid charity.

In addition, we are dividing up CHF 5,000 into smaller sacks and handing them out to the following recipients:
CHF 1,000 to the Krebsliga Schweiz cancer charity as requested by, among others, Elodie et Valérie in comment 167 and Hélène in comment 89.

CHF1,000 to the Stepping Stones School in Nigeria, as suggested by Samira in comment 89.
CHF1,000 will go to support a school in Recife, Brazil – this request from Susanne in comment 156.
CHF500 to pay for the bike that Daniela requested in comment 60.
CHF500 to buy the Apple Logic Studio asked for by Angel in comment 30 – we look forward to hearing his first rap!

Android continues to grow extremely fast. This is demonstrated by the download figures for our app. And next year the trend is likely to continue upwards: new devices such as the Galaxy Nexus S and the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich will provide a huge boost.

For this reason, we have given our Android app some new features and rectified some bugs while we were at it.

Entirely new is the start screen: now you see only one search field. So you no longer need to laboriously enter the search term in one field and the location in the other field.

Directly under the search field, you can find the suggested categories. This should make your search easier. Are you looking for a bar or a cash machine around the corner? Just click on the relevant category and you can immediately see what is available around you.

A feature that is bound to help you is the identification of telemarketing (*some call it spam identification). Some numbers that users search for cannot be found in the telephone directories. We can safely say that some are telemarketing numbers; i.e. companies that want to sell you something. If you search for these numbers with the local.ch app, the message “number unknown, we suspect telemarketing” will be displayed.

You can now also search using voice recognition, because what Apple can do, Android can match. Just click on the microphone icon and speak. For some simple terms at least, it already works very well; for more complex terms, you may have to try several times.

Until now, you have been able to choose whether you want to use local.ch as an app or widget. Now you can also add local.ch to your Quick Search (instead of Google). This will take you to your desired result quicker.

And you will, of course, again find some bug fixes and improvements to stability and speed.

Father Christmas, Santa Claus – there are many names for the old man with the white beard who sets off on 24 December with a big sack full of presents for all those who deserve to have their wishes fulfilled. To ease his burden, local.ch has come up with a brilliant plan: this year, we will help Father Christmas deliver his festive load.

So how does this work? It’s simple: just tell us under this blog spot what you would like this Christmas and why, and local.ch will try to grant your wish. Your gift can cost up to CHF 5,000 – it could be an iPad 2 or a round of mulled wine for you and your friends.

Instead of a prize draw, our team of stand-in Father Christmases at local.ch will decide the winner or winners. The creativity of your wish, and the reason for it, is very important to us. There’s no need to write a novel or become a Good Samaritan, but it would be nice if your wish not only benefited you but other people or animalstoo. And something else: we will grant up to three different wishes. One very big wish or two medium-sized wishes or three smallish ones – it all depends on what you want.

If you don’t have a wish of your own but like someone else’s ideas, just tell us in the comment line. We’re looking forward to receiving your suggestions and thoughts.

The idea of TED may sound simple: “thoughts that are worth sharing” to be passed on at an event under this motto. TEDx is the small brother of the big TED conference in California, which has been held there annually since 1990.
The aim of TED is not only an enthusiastic, spellbound audience, but also what it does with the ideas: they are there to be discussed further, inspire and provide subjects for discussion even between the presentations. This works so well because both the speakers and the audience come from entirely different areas. Natural scientists, engineers, artists, sportsmen, entrepreneurs and students: TEDx brings together all kinds of people of all age groups. With a conference contribution of CHF50, participation is also by no means expensive for anyone having to miss TED itself.

When everyone comes from a different specialist area, it is not possible to hide behind specialist terms and deep theoretical discussions: everybody has to learn something from one another. This distinguishes TEDx from other conferences, which have a narrower subject matter. TEDx is the proverbial thinking out of the box: where else can one learn about the findings of a brain researcher, ski entrepreneur, journalist and mountaineer in a concentrated form in 20 presentations of 15 minutes in length. The mountaineer, Satyabrata Dam, impressed us most: a former submarine commander in the Indian navy, since 2010 his day job has been to climb mountains (which he was been blogging in such an insightful way hier), travel the world, hold talks on his expeditions and, more importantly, continue climbing. One of his lessons: the mountain teaches you both humility and courage. Humility because you understand how irrelevant and fragile man is; courage because that makes every moment precious and should prevent you from spending your time on unnecessary activities.

Inspirations take effect by people living them passing them on and preferring to go their own way rather than keeping to the beaten track. This is what makes TEDx so special. The presentation of Benedikt Germanier had just such an effect: the 44-year-old Swiss entrepreneur quit his job as a strategy consultant at UBS in New York in order to spend the rest of his life doing what satisfies him most: skis – their perfect production and supplying them with passion for quality. Simple principles and real goods instead of speculative constructs as the backdrop and drive of what one does; the return to something tangible. Germanier’s development is no less than the encouragement to spend one’s life – and also earn one’s living – doing what one believes in and what one feels passionately about, instead of pursuing a career half-heartedly. Germanier shows that in an ideal world life is not something to be put up with, but a route than can be designed independently.
If you think that TEDx is a place of elevated moments, you are not wrong, but don’t miss the equally important E part of TED: the entertainment. There were musical breathers with the electronic pop of All Hands, Jojo Mayer and the drums and sound experiments from Oy to whirl around the information taken in.
During the aperitif and the breaks between the dense programme, visitors had the opportunity to discuss what they had heard. And they were keen to do so. As such, a whole day passed with clever, exciting entertainment across the boundaries of age groups and areas of interest. That leaves us with just one thing to add: thank you, organisers of TEDxZurich, including our colleague Hugo, for an excellent job. We look forward to next year and hope to see you there.

To find what you are looking for, you need one thing above all: information. You have to really know what you are looking for: a flower shop or a hairdresser? A motorbike jacket or a wrench? On our website and mobile applications, you can not only find what you are looking for and where to buy near you, but also how to get there and the opening hours of the shop. And now you even have the option to open closed doors with local.ch. With the new 360 degrees service, local.ch gives you a sneak preview behind a shop’s doors. On our website, under the entry of the shop that you are interested in, you will find a video window that takes you precisely to the outlet. Here you can try out what it looks like.

You not only see what the shop’s neighbourhood is like, but by clicking on the arrow you can even enter the shop itself. Once you’re inside, you can quite literally browse the shelves; clicking on the arrows at the bottom of the video window allows you to look around the shop – a 360-degree view and a realistic representation of the experience that awaits you there.

And what if you’re not looking but want to be found? Then 360 degrees is the perfect option to present yourself to customers: they feel better informed and can experience even easier what sets your shop apart. Fresh, unconventional and, above all, with a sense of actually being on site – thanks to 360 degrees, customers can see what distinguishes one shop from another, a shop’s individual atmosphere and the attraction to go to this address and not somewhere else.

What is new? We have changed our logo slightly and added what is important to us, i.e. “easy to find”. That is what local.ch should allow you to do, and to this end our entire website has undergone a makeover. To make searching and finding as convenient as possible, we have made the site leaner, less colourful and created more room for what is important: your queries.

But because we want to keep offering you an ever broader range of services, we have also made available a comprehensive location search, up-to-date weather information and route planning via our map function. Other features, such as permanently updated links to our latest offers and services, are retained in the new look of the website.

It is important to us that wherever local.ch appears, the same face will be waiting for you: be it in print or in pixels. We offer you a complete search with lots of added value. Why not try it out!

While our more popular platforms have been keeping us pretty busy so far this year, we found finally some time to polish the local.ch Windows Phone 7 app.

Better Maps

Top of things we’ve improved is the map, where we had many of you telling us the zoom wasn’t working correctly and that the map, in general, was unattractive and cumbersome to use. When viewing a phonebook entry, you can access the map with a single thumb swipe, either right or left;

…which takes you to the mini map;

By tapping once on the mini map you can open it in full screen;

The first thing you will notice is the maps themselves look different; we switched from using the Bing’s map tiles to Google’s map tiles, which we felt look better in Switzerland.

To zoom in and out, you can use pinch gestures on the map or you can use the + and – buttons found at the bottom of the map for convenience. Also, by tapping on the M button in the top left of the map, you can switch between street and satellite map tiles.

To return to the mini map, just tap on the back button on your phone.

Little Details Matter

Amongst the more minor improvements;

• the app now reflects how you hold your phone, rotating when you hold it in sideways; landscape mode when starting the app or beginning a new search, we automatically select the current contents of the
• search box, to make it easier to enter a new search term
