Get to know the iconfactory team, learn about how they formed iconfactory, listen to their advice if you’re looking to launch your own startup and of course we talked twitter and about the future of twitterrifc.

How and why I blog with blogging veteran John Martin

John has been blogger for everyday for four years straight at A Day in the Life: Digital Digressions . Let’s see what this experienced blogger had to say on the following questions?

What is the driving force behind your 4.5 years of blogging without missing a day; that is, what is your inspiration?

Where do you see blogging going in the future, in terms of a respected media outlet?

Why do you think we’re seeing some bloggers stop/give it up? Taking a break?

Do you ever get writers block? If so where do you go for inspiration?

What are your favorite blogs? What blogs do you read?

Video length 8:08

FYI John is a technical writer, so if you’re a reader or don’t have time to watch the video, John emailed me the answers also.

How did you get started in blogging?
When blogging first came into vogue, I was attracted to it on three levels:

It involves computers. I’ve been into computers ever since the early 80s when I purchased one of the first personal computers on the market—the IBM PC, which was basically a $3000 electric typewriter and word processor.

It involves writing and documenting. I love to write and enjoy documenting my life. What movies have I seen? How about lectures, plays, opera, and live concerts? What books have I read? To where have I traveled in my life? Serious documenter.

It is a creative outlet. As a technical writer and technical editor for a living, my writing has to be very stoic, as qualities of writing that make it creative, such as humor, sarcasm and wit never translate well into all eight or ten languages that our publications get translated into. Blogging allows me to get my daily fix of creative writing.
And, finally, I guess the fact that my writing is “out there” and people can “interact” with it if they choose to, greatly appeals to the extrovert that I am. So, all in all, blogging meets a lot of “satisfiers” for me.

What is the driving force behind your 4.5 years of blogging without missing a day; that is, what is your inspiration?
Just before I started blogging I was looking for a new car to buy, and I found one that had all of the features I wanted, but it was white. I remember thinking, “Do people drive white cars?” and “Do they look dirty all the time?” So, for the rest of that day I looked for white cars, and I was absolutely astounded by the number I saw. (And most of them didn’t look dirty, BTW.)

But more than anything, this exercise showed me that the more you look for something, the more you’re going to see it. And that’s when I decided that I was going to look for affirmations in my life to include in my daily blog. A lot of people use their blog to rant and rave, which certainly is a legitimate use, but I wanted mine to document my days and be as uplifting as possible. So I chose the LiveJournal username of dailyafirmation (click to see the history of the one “f” in affirmation) on purpose: the daily part to encourage me to do it every day, and the affirmation part to remind me to look for affirmations during my day. It’s been an interesting over the years to observe the change in my recognition of what an affirmation is. At first, I almost always recognized them as verbal (or written in an e-mail) comments, such as, “You’re so funny,” “You’re a great guy,” “You’re fun to be around,” or “I admire your intellect.” But as I continued “looking,” I began to realize that a lot of events and gestures are affirmations, too. Examples of those are being invited to go out for coffee after class in a new grad school class and getting a short story published. And one final note about affirmations: I’ve also noticed that in looking for them regularly and recognizing them more clearly, I’ve also gotten better at giving affirmations.

Another driving force of daily blogging is that I like the idea of being able to look back over the years to do some self-reflection, and in some cases see personal growth. It’s amazing how some things that once consumed me in my life, now seem almost irrelevant. And, finally, if I ever get amnesia, dementia, or Alzheimer’s, I can look back and re-enjoy my life.

Where do you see blogging going in the future, in terms of a respected media outlet?
I think the future of blogging is largely dependent on the development and evolution of tools and applications that facilitate blogging. It seems to me that tools and applications that accommodate a “mashup” mentality—facilitating the embedding of pictures, videos, and music, for example—will certainly help personal blogging to continue to flourish.

I’m not sure about the future of blogs as a respected media outlet, but it seems to me that as long as they continue to represent “the voice of the people” and deliver it “realtime,” it will continue to be a viable—respectability aside—force to be reckoned with.

Why do you think we’re seeing some bloggers stop/give it up? Taking a break?
I firmly believe that people will only continue to do something that they’re getting something out of. So, there are as many reasons to stop, as there are to start, blogging. For me, my “return on investment” is mostly self-directed. I’m happy with what I produce whether anyone else reads it or not. Of course, I love when other people read and comment on my blog, but it’s not the driving force for me. If it was, I might have quit a long time ago.

I also believe that it’s a matter of priorities. If something is important to you, you’ll make time to do it. Some time in the last year or two, I read of a blogger who had been blogging every day for 5 years, I think it was, who announced one day that she was abandoning her blog. The reason she gave? She had been wanting to write a book forever, but hadn’t had the time to put toward it. And it had just dawned on her that if she took the time she spent writing her blog each day, and spent it writing her book, she’d actually get it written. That’s a good example of a recognition, and realignment, of priorities.

Do you ever get writers block? If so where do you go for inspiration?
Ha. I have a lot to say about a lot of things. But, seriously, since my blog is a daily journal, and I stay busy (see my July calendar as an example of what I mean by staying busy), I really don’t ever run out of things to put in my blog. As for material that I often comment about “between the lines” of my daily activities, I sometimes use stumbleupon.com, if I haven’t read something interesting in someone else’s blog to comment on or haven’t observed something interesting myself during the day to comment on. You can ask my friends, I am always grabbing a little piece of paper somewhere saying, “Oh, that’s got to be blogged about.” And now—shameless plug alert: I can always use 30THREADS to get some ideas of things to comment on!

What are your favorite blogs? What blogs do you read?
I prefer “human interest” types of blogs. I don’t read any work-related or commercial blogs regularly, only when someone on Twitter, for example, includes a link to a particularly interesting-sounding posting. I follow the blogs of several “friends” I’ve listed on LiveJournal, and I tend to favor blogs that are well-written and that have a creative element to them. I’m also partial to blogs that comment on words and writing. I enjoy The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks, where signs such as this one are posted, usually with some repartee about them:

. Matt and I had talked about using social networking sites to connect with new individuals as he relocated in the Triangle, NC, his experience as he started his first business while he was in high school, and how he got started as an armature photographer.

We also talked about what events Matt was looking forward to in the Triangle such at startup weekend and tweetups but also expressed his interest on having regular meetups to bring the community together. Matt is another newbie to the Triangle and we’re glad to have him here.

Do you know what others are saying about you online? If not Andy Beal knows how to find out. Andy Beal is an internet marketing consultant, author of newly released book Radically Transparent and blogs at Marketing Pilgrim .

Andy and I had a chance to sit down and talk about the Pilgrim Network, his new book and protecting your online identity. As for being transparent, we had some discussion on how Andy balances his time online, his email checking policy and what almost every geek wants to be when they grow up; a photographer. As we touched on personal branding he and I discussed what companies and today’s youth should do to protect their image online. We’re glad that Andy resides in NC, as he is one of the leaders and voices in social media in the area, something we also discussed in the interview; Silicon Valley East NC.

This is part one of the interview, part two will feature some twitter Q&A that will be posted later. Andy also has two upcoming conferences/meetups if you would like to hear Andy speak in person.

1. Online Reputation Management in Seven Steps by Andy Beal, August 10th, Raintree Country Club, 8600 Raintree Lane, Charlotte - http://seo.meetup.com/76/calendar/7999284/
2. Online Reputation Management Workshop, August 7th, Sigma Xi Center, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina - http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/live

A few weeks ago, twitter friend @RobertP posted a tweet saying “Meet new Triangler @gregoryng” and with all the new interesting people I’ve met via twitter this year, I decided to give Greg a follow and review his profile. Greg’s profile led me to his site: http://www.gregoryng.com where I was highly impressed with Greg’s web presence and involvement in social media.

But where did Greg come from and what is he doing in the Triangle? What’s with the nooDad and Chinese Elvis websites? What blog does Greg uses to compare marketing and the social media space? How does Greg compare the Boston social media community to the Triangle community?

After following Greg on twitter, I reached out to him for an interview. So we met at Edge-Office downtown Raleigh for a quick conversation, to answer those questions.

Thanks @RobertP for introducing @gregoryng to the Triangle.

Breaking away from interviewing some of the local who’s who in the online community in the Triangle, I thought it would be nice to interview a student athlete at one of our local colleges who may be headed to the Olympics.

Student athlete Joe Kindred from Fuquay-Varina, NC attends and trains at Saint Augustine’s College to compete in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on July 3rd in the high jump competition.

So in the interview I asked Joe how does he communicate with his friends and family while competing, has he thought about blogging, and who is the first person who he calls after winning in a competition (No brainer). Take a look and find out which social network Joe uses to keep his family informed.

David is very intellectual and talented and is one of the reasons Triangle, NC community is one of the leaders in social media and citizen journalism.

Local Conversations had a chance to interview Gwen Bell from Tech Stars while on an East Coast network swing. Gwen who attended UNC has traveled from Carrboro/Chapel Hill, to Boulder Colorado, back to Carrboro and now back to Boulder Colorado to work for Tech Stars. Gwen who also represents Colorado startups and I had a few moments to chat about her role with both companies, her journey form Carolina to Boulder and places in between. We also talked about how important personal branding is online and what advice she would give to anyone who’s looking to launch a startup.

We covered other topics such as are we seeing a new feminist movement online with women being the new face of tech such as Amanda Congdon (I said Amanda Moody, sorry Amanda), Veronica Belmont and Tara Hunt. Clearly Gwen is the leading lady in the Boulder, Colorado but she’s not done with just Tech Stars. See what else she has planned at the end of the interview.
