Studies show that many people have lifetime gum problems which can contribute to serious health issues. A recent study conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, published in ‘Breast Cancer Research Treatment’ found that women with gum disease which had advanced to the stage of losing teeth had an eleven fold greater incidence of breast cancer.

Setting extreme goals for yourself will most likely guarantee failure, so I recommend setting goals that are more realistic. Instead of denying yourself all the goodies you enjoy for the rest of your life, try these tips to help you get into the shape you have always dreamed of:

Move Your Body. Physical activity comes in all forms. Just 30 minutes a day will decrease stress, burn calories and amp up your metabolism. Don’t feel the pressure to chain yourself to a gym…which, as in most cases, within a few months will have you quitting. I strongly believe in dancing! Put on some music and dance around your kitchen if you have to. The time will go by quickly, and you won’t even realize the amount of calories you are burning. My kitchen is on two levels, and I often use the step down to the lower part as an opportunity to exercise. While the television is on, I often do step aerobics right there in the kitchen! Be creative. Exercise doesn’t have to be expensive.

Don’t Deprive Yourself Completely. If you never allow yourself dessert or any other treat that you enjoy, you will fail. Try dieting during the week, and splurging a little on the weekends. This way, you have something to look forward to.

Take Vitamins. Multivitamins combat stress, energize the body and helps the immune system. A healthy inside will radiate a healthy outside.

Hydrate. Enough water helps the body function properly. It helps keep the immune system healthy and flushes out waste and toxins. I recommend at least 6 glasses a day. Keep in mind that drinks that contain sugar are loaded with calories. Always look at the label and don’t overlook SERVING SIZE. Many times just half a bottle of these drinks are 150 calories. Another thing to remember…drinks such a lattes and cappuccinos are loaded with calories.

Antioxidant Diet. There are certain foods that are natural aging inhibitors. Spinach, carrots, blueberries, cherries, and virtually any deep colored fruit or veggie infuse the body with the chemicals which fight the free radicals which promote disease and aging. Seeds such as sunflower and pumpkin are also great. Most nuts, especially walnuts, are also great for overall health and well being. If you must eat dairy products, I recommend using only organic, since there are no artificial hormones or antibiotics added. The same goes for meat and poultry products.

Stress Reduction. This is my biggest problem, but I am working on it! We should all have the attitude “I am too blessed to be stressed”!!!!

Because of this slow economy, many more people will be vying for the same positions. What we wear to a job interview is a “clue” about ourselves that we want the world to discover. The more polished and professional we appear, the sooner we’ll be on our way to new career opportunities. Investing in the right “power outfit” is an investment in our future.

This New Year brings lots of changes. Expectations are higher…the business climate is much more competitive and demanding. Therefore, standing out is much more important now than it was 10 years ago. You will want your first impression to be great, not just good. According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics, 55% of how you are perceived is on how you look. This is what the employer first notices about you.

A neat male wearing a suit and tie to an interview will make a much better impression than someone who is wearing jeans and a t-shirt, even if the job environment is casual. A dark suit with coordinated shirt and tie, dark socks and dark leather shoes are a good investment outfit for interviews. Hair should be neat, and never pile on the cologne!!!

Bitten nails are a no-no, make sure they are trimmed neatly before the interview. Carrying an organizer or a briefcase rounds out the package.

A woman who walks into an interview wearing a skirt too short or a blouse too low cut will probably not get the job, unless it is for “Hooters”. She should preferably wear a simple black dress or suit with the length just below the knees. Her shoes should be conservative..can be heels but nothing too chunky. Stay away from fishnet stockings, pantyhose should be a neutral color. As I stated for men, the same goes for women: keep the perfume light and make sure nails are neatly manicured.

Another thing potential employers will notice and not take kindly to:
Chewing gum;
Answering your cellphone in the middle of the interview;
Carrying your IPod ;
Carrying bottled water or drinks of any kind;
Food items.
I hope these small tips can help. If anyone has any particular questions, please post them here.

Dr. Coakley,

I thought that I’d be able to do Invisalign but it turns out that I’m not a candidate. I still want to straighten my teeth but I am not looking forward to having braces on my teeth for a year or longer. Isn’t there a way that we could just tighten the wires really tight and finish my treatment in 2 months?

This is a common sentiment that orthodontists run into a lot. It may seem like it’s feasible to just pull really hard and have everything move into place a lot sooner, but things unfortunately don’t work that way.

The main danger that all orthodontic treatment could run into is a process called root resorption. When your adult teeth are beginning to arrive and the baby teeth are in the way, the natural process of deciduous root resorption occurs. The adult teeth exert pressure on the roots of the baby teeth which causes surrounding macrophages–neutral bodies present in the surrounding tissue–to differentiate into osteoclasts–specialized bodies which work to resorb bone–which then “eat away” the root of the tooth.

The macrophages are always present in the surrounding tissue, and when orthodontic treatment comes along and exerts similar pressure on the roots of the adult teeth the same process could occur. The reason that orthodontic cases typically have long time frames is to ensure that the treatment exerts a pressure on the teeth and roots in order to move them around but not such a great pressure which would lead to resorption. Once root resorption occurs it cannot be undone, which is again why great care is taken.

I’m always available to take any more of your questions: 732-741-9090 or Two River Orthodontics.

Dear Craig,

Although I can contribute to my 401(k) after a year of employment at my current job and the company matches 100% of the first 6% of my salary, I’m not completely ‘vested’ for another 5 years. What does that mean?

-Amanda C.

Dear Amanda,

VESTING: The process by which employees accrue non-forfeitable rights over employer contributions that are made to the employee’s qualified retirement plan account.

Vesting affects only the amount of funds matched and contributed by your employer. Each year that you stay with your company, you earn the right to twenty percent (20%) more of your matched funds. The employer’s matched funds and income earned on those funds are “vested” to you each year at a twenty percent increment, (hence, 5 years at 20% per year equals 100% ). This benefit package structure entices long-term employment since you forfeit some of the matched contributions if you leave your job in less than five years.

(Arbitrarily, if you make $100,000, the company would completely match $6,000 in contributions, or 6% of your salary. If you contributed $6,000 and then left your job after three years, the company would only be responsible for 60% of their total contribution, or $3,600. If you still only contributed $6,000 and stayed for five years, the company would then be responsible for $6,000 since you would be 100% vested). The five-year vesting requirement is only used to make the calculation of the company match at the time you terminate your employment.

Regardless of vesting, the total of your current contributions and the income earned on the money that you’ve contributed is yours.

Please contact me with any further questions: 201-436-4800.

Craig

*Well, it’s another new year, and if you are still feeling bad about yourself, here’s some good advice: change your image! Once you get your outside reflecting what you have on the inside,you will be amazed at how many other things fall into place..…higher self esteem, job opportunities, and perhaps even that special relationship.

Case in point:

When you stroll through a department store and notice the displays, do they entice you to look at a certain outfit? They should, because that is what they are intended to do. Those displays are put there to tempt you to spend money. Why? Because it is called “Salesmanship” Ever since that pushcart owner polished his fruit and vegetables in order for them to sell faster, image has played an important role in the bottom line.

So should you!!!!

It doesn’t have to cost a lot…there are plenty of budget friendly image resolutions that you should make this year to help you achieve your goals. Here are just a few:

Organize and clean out your closet of things that you haven’t worn over the past year. Make room for a few updated outfits. Having a neat, clean space makes it easier to choose the right outfit.

Get proper undergarments that fit correctly. Visible panty lines are a nono, as is an ill-fitting bra. Your local department store or specialty shop always has experts on hand to help you choose something flattering.

Always practice good posture. This is one of my strongest points that I stress to people. If you slouch, what are you telling the world? That you have no self confidence. So, stand up straight, with your shoulders back. Walk tall with pride, after all, you are something special and everyone should know it!

Start an Exercise Regimen…One of the most important things we can do for ourselves!!! There are so many benefits to taking care of your body through exercise and proper diet. Not only will you look better in clothes, but overall, you will feel better, sleep better, and have an extra spring in your step.

If you want to look younger longer, cut out smoking , excessive alcohol consumption and, just as important, stop the over-sunbathing! I know in the short term, these things make you look good, but in the long run, you will age way before your time. All these vices speed up the aging process , so make this a don’t in the new year!

If your hair and makeup are dating you, change the look!!! Go to a reputable hair salon for advice and look to places like Sephora for tips on makeup application.

My personal style accessory is a great bag. A bag can be a real fashion statement on its own. Look at a woman walking down the street wearing just sweats, but if she is carrying a great bag, it automatically upgrades her image.

If you are in the business world, dress like you are worth the money you want to earn. Anything does not go , as far as I am concerned. Being sloppy and not put together will leave you at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to promotions, etc. Invest in some inexpensive, but well made tailored outfits

If you resolve to make 2009 the year to upgrade you image, you will be amazed at how quickly all the other resolutions fall in line. Packaging yourself will attract people and opportunities like nothing else will!!!

Dr. Coakley,

I had regular metal braces on my teeth when I was a teenager about 25 years ago. I unfortunately lost my retainer about 23 years ago. Since that time my teeth have shifted back almost to where they started; I have a gap between my front teeth again and on the bottom my front teeth are rotated. I couldn’t really see myself wearing metal braces again, do you think Invisalign would work?

Invisalign was essentially created to fix the types of problems that occur in patients that once had orthodontic treatment but whose teeth are now relapsing. From your description, it sounds like Invisalign should work to correct your issues and could take as little as 20 weeks with Invisalign Express.

There are a number of limiting factors in using Invisalign, though: physical limitations of the aligners as well as behavioral factors, and each case has to be examined closely. For an example of a physical limitation, because of the way the aligner system attaches to the teeth, Invisalign is not good at moving teeth “up and down.” Difficulty is also presented in rotating pre-molars because the round shape doesn’t provide much “grip” for the aligner. There are many more behavioral factors, like being able to wear the aligners continuously, or keeping the aligners from getting lost since they have to be removed so frequently. There is also the matter of being able to regularly come in for adjustments, which means you would need to remain in the area (no moves, no job transfers, etc.) for at least the term of treatment. Keep in mind that while smaller cases may be able to be accomplished in 20 weeks, the average Invisalign case does take about 12-18 months.

Give us a call if you’re in the area and we’ll be able to discuss your eligibility in greater detail: 732-741-9090 or Two River Orthodontics.

In a situation like this, I like to take a cue from the likes of Audrey Hepburn, who always looked flawless, no matter what the occasion. Keep your outfit chic and simple and you will fit in anywhere. You can’t go wrong with the LBD (little black dress)!! No matter what your size, there is something for you. Speigel and Newport News (through their catalogues or online) carry a line called Shape FX, which flatters all shapes and sizes with camouflaging contours. There is no reason to look frumpy anymore. Balance out your ensemble with either a strappy sandal or high boots. One piece of jewelry, either a statement necklace or large earrings, will play beautifully against a solid dress. Have fun!!!

I FEEL BAD ABOUT MYSELF AND WHENEVER I GO INTO A STORE FITTING ROOM OR LOOK INTO THE MIRROR I JUST WANT TO GIVE UP. WHAT CAN I DO?

Don’t give up!! Just a few small changes can dramatically improve your self-image. First, many people, in seeking out love, tend to look outward rather than inward. Falling in love with yourself can be just as wonderful an experience as falling in love with someone else. This is not conceited or selfish…it is a powerful act of self-love! Once you begin to love yourself unconditionally, you will start looking at yourself through fresh eyes, realizing the uniqueness of you. In turn, you will treat yourself more lovingly, the way you would treat anyone who is special to you. Take 30 minutes each day to nurture yourself….exercise in any form, including walking in the park, or in place, is a great way to begin. If 30 minutes is too much, take 10 minutes and work up from there. In doing this, you are putting into motion a routine which eventually lifts the spirits.

You can’t help but feel better about yourself when you have the sense of accomplishment that comes from doing good for your body. Get rid of the junk food and replace it with healthy alternatives….little by little you will become a better you!!! Dressing will become more enjoyable once you start seeing the positive changes in the mirror.

I AM A GUY WHO NEVER TOOK MUCH INTEREST IN MY WARDROBE. I AM NOW BACK ON THE MARKET. HOW DO I LOOK MY BEST?

Well, let’s start with a DO list:

DO spend on jeans that fit really well, meaning not baggy in the butt. They should hug the butt, but not too tightly. You should invest in two styles: a lighter pair to wear casually with a nice sweater or shirt, and a darker, more fitted straightleg to wear with a blazer (a must ), for a more formal, polished look. This look will work almost anywhere,
DO always match the color of your socks to your pants. White socks with dark pants went out with Laverne and Shirley.
DO replace old, baggy, sweatpants for ones that are more stylish. Target carries great contemporary workout gear.

Next is the DON’T list:

DON’T wear baggy pants with an equally baggy shirt. To be blunt, it will make you look fat. On the other side of the coin, a tight shirt with equally tight pants will make you look like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Not a great look right now. Always go for balance.

DON’T wear scuffed shoes ever! It takes away from an otherwise nice ensemble. Ditto for bitten fingernails. People will wonder what you are so nervous about and this can be a turnoff. Invest in a good manicure set.

In general, always wear nice clothes….”you never know when you will have a date with destiny”, so be sure to be dressed for it.
