We have a lot of fun playing with Mozilla's very own mobile system - Firefox OS. It's first completely HTML5 driven solution of such kind. Some of our games are already on Firefox Marketplace, other require a bit of optimization from our side but will follow soon.

Hi everyone!

Today we are releasing the result of our more than year HTML5 journey public for everyone!

Meet Logicking's HTML5 game engine - UltimateJS
Home Page
GitHub home

Unlike other HTML5 game solutions UltimateJS is focused on mobile web games at first place.
With UltimateJS developers can skip all mundane work associated with cross-platform compatibility like screen sizing for different resolutions, touch and mouse user input handling, sounds and sprite animation and put their main effort into the actual gameplay creation.

Several commercial games have been released and few more are in development.

Licensing terms are very straightforward:

1) UltimateJS is free for non-commercial use.
2) Indie License will include additional tools and demo-games, and will allow developer to distribute unlimited number of commercial titles without any royalties or other restrictions. Upgrades to new major version may require additional fee. We plan to set Indie License price to $99 for the 1.x version, which is due to come in early Q3 2012.

3) Early Adopters - those who'll get the 0.x version of the engine before June 2012 will be automatically granted Indie License and discount 50% for 1.x version.

So if you are interested in becoming an Early Adopter please email us at logicking@logicking.com with subject "HTML5 game engine"

Caravan Sokoban is variation of classic 'sokoban' game. The rules are very simple. Use your character to move items into their appropriate locations. The game features multiple items that go in different spots to make things a bit more challenging. If you get stuck you can hit the ‘undo’ button to go back a step.

Now you can play the game online on every HTML5 compatible game browser.
Overall quality and visual appearance of cross-platform HTML5 games have drastically improved since then, but most of the games still remains soundless. This is strange because there's nothing complex about making simple one-channel sounds that work on desktop browsers and on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android devices. Logicking's Monkey Music game was released in August 2011 and was arguably the first cross-platform mobile game with sounds ever.

In this article I will share few tips about what wrong with HTML5 sound and how it could be overcome with some simple tricks.

Here's list of problems with HTML5 audio at the moment:

Different browsers supports different sound format (mp3, wav, ogg etc);

iPhone and iPad allows only one MP3 sound can be loaded and played at time;

Android has limited support of <audio> tag and JavaScript audio API;

The HTML5 audio in general has high latency that is crucial for games.

So can we deal with this issues:

1. Different Sound Format

As following blog post from Scirra.com shows we need two formats to cover all the browsers Mp3 and Ogg, while guys from Scirra suggest to drop Mp3 for more copyright friendly MPEG-4 AAC.

So we will need to duplicate all of the sounds in two formats (Ogg, Mp3 or Mpeg4-ACC). It's not a big deal since the HTML5 games are supposed to be hosted online and you can check what the format is supported on the start and download only required content.

2. iOS (iPhone and iPad) HTML5 audio limitations

While being clearly the best browser for HTML5 games iOS's Safari limits audio in two ways:

Only one MP3 sound is allowed to be loaded and played at time;

Application can load and play audio only after actual user-generated click event.

The first issue can be solved by using Audio Sprite technology that described in details in this article.

In short, audio sprite is a long audio file that contains all sound samples needed for the game. Then one should store position and length of the each sample in the audio sprite file and then from java script code rewind playing "head" to desired position of audio sprite file and set callback using setTimeout to stop playback after sample's length is expired.

Free audio tool Audacity can be very helpful for creating audio sprites from the set of sample audio files.
The end of one sample should be distant from the beginning of another by 2 or even 3 seconds delay. Such big delay is required because there's a probability that due to the java script lags on the slow devices playback won't be stopped soon enough and user will hear unwanted sounds.

Here's how Coconut Beach audio sprite looks in the Audacity:

The second limitation - allowing of actual playback on user's click event - is also easily avoided. In the Logicking's HTML5 games there's always a Play button in the main menu with a short click sound played when user press it. On iOS devices first played sound is also initiate loading of the whole audio sprite. Just make sure that samples that might be played first in the game are placed in the beginning of the audio sprite because few seconds might pass depending on the speed of Internet connection before audio sprite file will be loaded completely.

3. Android Audio Limitations

Android started to support <audio> since version 2.3 Gingerbread. Alas overall experience is still very unpredictable on different devices. But the good news is that Android supports Flash that can be used to play audio. There's an excellent open-source library that can handle automatic HTML5/Flash audio transition for us - jPlayer

So all we have to do is to make our audio sprite functions executed via jPlayer API and we'll get cross-platform sounds on iOS and Android devices. While provided with both OGG and MP3 version of audio sprite file jPlayer will be able to additionally support all desktop browsers too.

4. High Latency of HTML5 Audio

Most games are supposed to be dynamic and responsive to user actions. Unfortunately current state of HTML5 Audio doesn't allow to synchronise animations and sounds very well. While Web Audio API is still supported by desktop versions of Chrome and Safari only game developers need to choose wisely what game actions should have sounds accompaniment and what should not. In other words sounds have to mark only significant not very frequent (1-2 times per second) events in the game to avoid mistiming issues. Although it still much better than have no sounds at all.

Coconut Beach is another physics puzzle game made with the help of Logicking's HTML5 game tech.
The goal is simple: solve the puzzles and collect the coconuts from the palms into the basket.

Arguably the first ever mobile HTML5 physics puzzle game with sounds on iOS and Android goes online on Spil Game portal.

The game was developed by using Logicking's own HTML5 game engine for casual and social games. The engine deals with multitudes of cross-platform compatibility issues like various screen sizes or ways sound is played.
