In case you haven’t noticed, we do things big around here when the playoffs get started. It’s only fitting that we would do the same thing for the beast of the week honors. Instead of just honoring one player this week, I’m giving out three beast of the week awards, one for each of the classes.

So, without further ado, lets get right to it.

Class A

Kate Leone, White Plains

Leone started things off with an eight-point day (seven goals, one assist) in a 20-5 first-round win against Wappingers.

Leone’s real #BOTW-worthy performance came in the quarterfinals. The junior scored four goals in a 10-8 win over Mamaroneck to send the Tigers to their first sectional semifinal in program history.

What impressed me most about Leone’s performance is that it came against a league opponent. It’s one thing to score almost half of your teams goals in a game. It’s another thing to do it against a team that has already played you twice this season and knows your tendencies.

It’s not like White Plains dominated Mamaroneck during the regular season. The two teams tied in their first meeting and Mamaroneck won 12-9 the second time around. Credit to Leone for figuring out what she need to do differently to help her team win.

Class B

Carly Wooters, Ursuline

Speaking of scoring the majority of your teams goals, Carly Wooters did just that on Saturday in Ursuline’s 19-16 win over Ossining. Wooters posted nine points (seven goals, two assists) in the Koalas shootout of a win.

I was extremely tempted to give this to Wooters’ teammate Nikki Apostolopoulos. The Koalas goalie made an eye popping 22 saves in the win. Still, when you have a hand in almost half of your team’s goals, you get the nod.

Class C

Madison Kandoth, Albertus Magnus

I’ve said from the very beginning that Class C was the most wide open of the three classes. Two teams, however, that were not on my radar were Albertus Magnus and Irvington.

While the Bulldogs have Ciara Morley, who led Irvington in scoring in both its wins (four points against Pearl River, seven points against Valhalla), I gave the advantage to Kandoth for bringing the Falcons from out-bracket game to semifinal.

The junior averaged over four points a game as Albertus went 3-0 to reach the semifinals despite entering the tournament as a 13 seed.

LINCOLNDALE The No. 4 seeded Somers’ girls lacrosse team was playing for more than just each other when it took the field Saturday for its Section 1 Class B quarterfinal against No. 5 Tappan Zee.

A win meant Somers would play in the sectional semifinals for the first time in program history, showing continued growth from a school that has made big strides in the sport in recent years.

“It’s just good to keep moving forward for the program,” Tuskers junior Emma Schurr said. “I just want to keep it going, and get Somers out there on the map. Show them that Somers is there to play. We’re here to win.”

Playing in only its second quarterfinal game ever, Somers’ 10-4 win over the Dutchies proved the program is still on the rise. The Tuskers will head to No. 1 Yorktown Tuesday for the semifinals at a time to be determined.

The Tuskers came into Saturday’s game motivated by last season’s last-second loss to Scarsdale in the quarterfinals.

“We just didn’t want that to happen again,” said Schurr, who had two goals and an assist. “We all got really pumped up before the game. We are all so passionate about this sport.”

Somers’ determination to advance showed as it jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 15 minutes. The Tuskers then built on their lead, taking a 7-1 advantage into halftime.

“Every time they got they ball we just stopped them and killed their momentum, and our offense would just finish,” said Somers’ junior Tara Schurr, who had three goals and an assist. “We dug them a hole.”

It had been an up-and-down season for the Tuskers until they got on a roll down the stretch. After starting 3-4-1, Somers went on an eight-game winning streak to end the season. That run included a 16-15 win over perennial Class B powerhouse John Jay. That victory proved Somers could win a big game, something they have struggled to do over the past couple of years, according to coach Jaime Irving.

“It’s always like, ‘We can do this guys,’ but it’s only words,” Irving said. “You can say what you want, but until you do it it’s only words.”

As the four women’s lacrosse teams take the field for the Division III national semifinals on Saturday in Owings, Md., there might be a feeling of déjà vu.

For the second-straight season SUNY Cortland, Trinity, Middlebury and Salisbury have all made the final four. Once again locals on three of the teams have played vital roles in their teams return to the national semifinals.

Holy Child’s Hadley Duncan has helped Trinity (20-0), the reigning national champions, return to the final four and continue its win streak. The Bantams have won 28-straight games, dating back to April 25 of last year. Duncan led Trinity with two goals in its 8-7 win over Salisbury in last season’s national championship game. This year the senior is tied for second on the team in goals (36) and fourth in points (42).

Taking on the Bantams are the Red Dragons (21-1), a team with a trio of locals. North Rockland’s Tara Monaghan has led SUNY Cortland in draw controls (90) as a freshman. Monaghan has also posted 37 points (32 goals, five assists) and scooped 30 groundballs. Byram Hills’ Alex Fritz is also a freshman on the team along with junior Kerry Bretti, a Fox Lane graduate.

Middlebury (18-2) will take on Salisbury (21-0) on the other side of the bracket. Scarsdale’s Margaret Souther (pictured above), a senior, is second on the Panthers in points (62) and groundballs (33). She also leads Middlebury in caused turnovers (24). Heather Marrison, a Brewster native who played at Hotchiss, has played in 17 games, making 16 starts. Marrison, a senior, has 30 groundballs. Rye’s Madeleine Kinker, a freshman, and junior Dee Miller, a Rye native who played at Convent of Sacred Heart, are also on the team.
