The Vikings won their second straight Conference IV League A title.

Fishkin drove in Briana Keaveney from third in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1. Fishkin repeated the feat — driving in Keaveney from third — Then she does it again in the third to put South (14-4, 8-0) ahead.

“I felt great hitting them,” Fishkin said. “It felt good to drive in those two runs to get it going.”

Vikings coach Maura Heebink is impressed with the way her shortstop has been playing all season.

“She hits the ball solidly and she’s a thinking batter,” Heebink said. “She really concentrates and focuses when she gets to the plate. If you are like that, then you as a coach can put them in when you want and they’ll become a clutch hitter like Karly is.”

Step one for the Vikings was to win the league again.

“We knew coming into the season that we had to work a little bit harder since we lost some key players,” Keaveney said (right, Photo credit Frank Beccera Jr./The Journal News). “Our team is able to pick up those key players and keep playing hard. It feels good to win the league.”

Nicole Ritsick went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs for the Vikings.

“I’ve been playing with (Rams pitcher Danielle) Borelli for a lot of years,” Ritsick said. “She’s a pretty good pitcher, so I pretty much went in very confident with my head in the game. I knew that it would be a good day.”

Heebink was impressed with Ritsick at the plate, but the coach said she believes Ritsick’s main value is in the field.

“There’s not a better defensive first baseman in Rockland County,” Heebink said. “She’s saved us so many times. She scoops the ball without hesitation. She hit very well and she’s a very good hitter but she’s the foundation of our infield.”

Keaveney picked up the win, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out 11. She also went 3 for 4 and scored three runs.

“I felt really confident,” Keaveney said. “I felt that my pitches were really working. I was throwing hard. I focused on hitting my spots.”

Sara Herskowitz, Gabby Palumbo, and Megan Atzl each drove in a run for the Vikings. Teammate Brianna Turchiarelli went 2 for 3.

Borelli, who took the loss, went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for the Rams (5-15). Stefanie Lomedico also drove in a run.

“We came out here to play,” Lomedico said. “We tried our best and we came out on the bottom.”

The Ossining school district reached a contract agreement with its teachers that gives them 1.6 percent raises for 2013-14, but no increases for the following three years.

They would still receive step increases, although they will be lessened, and teachers will pay more for their health insurance.

Here’s a press release from the district:

Ossining Teachers Settle Contract

OSSINING, N.Y. – Working together, the Ossining Board of Education and Ossining Teachers Association have reached a new four-year agreement that will help preserve Ossining’s high quality educational programs while holding the line on taxes.

The new agreement calls for 0 percent salary increases in three of the four years covered, increased health insurance contributions from teachers and reduced step increases. Had the two sides failed to reach an agreement, the provisions of the existing contract, which expires on June 30th, would have remained in force under the Triborough Amendment of state labor law.

“Given the economic times, both sides came to the table in good faith and worked collaboratively for the good of the district,” said Ossining Teacher Association President Bob Rosenbaum. “We recognized the needs of the community and the district’s need to maintain educational programs. What we did will allow for continuity in our educational program and lay the foundation for future collaboration.”

Ossining Superintendent Raymond Sanchez praised the teachers for meeting with district representatives early and reaching an agreement before the current contract expired. “Both sides were committed to coming together to address the fiscal challenges facing the district while keeping the needs of the students front and center,” Sanchez said.

Board of Education President Bill Kress said, “I would like to thank the teachers for recognizing the fiscal times we live in and agreeing to a contract that will allow us to continue to provide a world-class education for our students.”

Key provisions of the contract include:

No salary increases in 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017;

Here’s a copy of the “citizens report card” on Indian Point released by opponents of the nuclear facility at Peekskill’s Riverfront Green Park on Tuesday morning.

Their report was timed to come before a meeting hosted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission this evening to talk about the 2012 annual safety assessment. That assessment gave Indian Point 2 and 3 a green rating, meaning that findings from inspections showed “very low safety significance.”

It also preceded a 6 p.m. Tuesday meeting hosted by the NRC at the Doubletree Hotel, 455 S. Broadway, Tarrytown.

The report card from opponents, including leaders of Riverkeeper and Clearwater, came to a different conclusion, giving the facility an “F.”

They assigned their critical grade to the NRC as well as Entergy, which owns Indian Point.

“The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is going through the motions on Indian Point,” said Riverkeeper Paul Gallay. “They’re not considering the government report about shadow evacuation and the fact that we could not evacuate Indian Point in the case of an emergency. They’re not considering fire safety adequately. They’re not forcing Entergy to move spent fuel to dry cast storage. They’re not considering earthquake risk which they themselves have assessed as being greatest at this plant of any of America’s reactors.”

(“Shadow evacuation” refers to people beyond the official evacuation zone also fleeing their homes in fear, complicating matters.)

Jerry Nappi, a spokesman for Entergy, the owner of the Buchanan facility, came to the press conference to counter their views. Also supporting Indian Point were representatives of the New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance.

“Indian Point is a thoroughly scrutinized facility,” Nappi said after the conference. “The NRC spent more than 10,000 person hours inspecting it last year alone and because of the investment we’ve made in the plant, we can demonstration that it operates safely….Entery has invested more than $100 million since 911 on security alone and were able to demonstrate through drills.

Among the opponents’ criticisms was that Indian Point did not power down during the destruction wrought by Superstorm Sandy, and that consequently, an emergency shut-down was required at 10 pm the night of the storm.

Richard Thomas, director of NY AREA and a supporter of the plant, said the shut-down was caused by a problem with the regional power grid, not a problem with the plant.

To Nappi, the facility’s performance during the storm was another demonstration of how badly it is needed.

“During Superstorm Sandy, we were one of the few pieces of electricity infrastructure that came through the storm unscathed,” he said.

Photo shows Paul Gallay, the Riverkeeper, speaking at the press conference at Peekskill’s Riverfront Green Park.

Red House Entertainment will operate the historic Paramount Theater following the Common Council’s unanimous agreement of the deal.

The city will pay the first sixth months of utility bills, expected to cost about $30,000, but is expected to receive about $45,000 in shared ticket revenue the first year and $110,000 the second year.

The theater closed in October with a previous operator racking up debt. Under that agreement, the city received just $1 per year, but paid for the utilities plus $50,000 in support, the city said.

Here’s an announcement from the city:

SPECIAL STATEMENT:

IT’S OFFICIAL: CITY OF PEEKSKILL COMMON COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES LEASE <!-<del>more</del>->AGREEMENT WITH RED HOUSE ENTERTAINMENT TO LEASE, MANAGE, AND OPERATE THE CITY’S HISTORIC PARAMOUNT THEATER

Foster: Lease Provides ‘Steady Revenue Stream to the City’

PRESS CONFERENCE AND PUBLIC CELBERATION ANNOUNCED FOR MAY 15, 2013 AT 11:00 A.M. TO SIGN CEREMONIAL AGREEMENT AND ANNOUNCE LINEUP OF 2013 PERFORMANCES

(Peekskill, New York)….. Mary F. Foster, mayor of the City of Peekskill has announced that at 6:45 p.m. this evening, the City’s Common Council unanimously voted to approve a lease agreement with Red House Entertainment to lease, manage, and operate the Paramount Theater. The historic theater was shuttered in October after its previous nonprofit operator dissolved half a million dollars in debt.

“We’re very happy to be reopening the Paramount Theater. The new lease is strong, clear, and allows for a healthy cash flow for both the operator and the city. It will provide a steady revenue flow to the city and will once again be an economic boon for our downtown,” says Mary F. Foster, mayor of The City of Peekskill.

Deputy Mayor Drew Claxton says: “I’m so excited to get the Paramount up and going again. My expectation is that Red House will do more than any operator in the past.”

Councilwoman Kathie Talbot, who had served on the City’s Paramount Selection Committee with the Mayor said: “Red House’s business model, combining a for-profit and a not-for-profit entity will provide a strong base. There was tremendous due diligence in our selection process and now, I’m thrilled beyond words, vey hopeful, and very excited to have the Paramount reopen again.”

Kurt Heitmann, the CEO of Red House Entertainment was not present for the vote tonight but previously-released a statement saying: “We’re very happy to have reached an agreement with the City of Peekskill. We’re looking forward to working with the City. It’s a great day for this vintage theater to be reopening in Peekskill and the Hudson Valley.”

Mayor Foster made the following points prior to tonight’s vote:

The Red House deal includes a 17-year contract with a 10-year option.

The City will receive 5% of the adjusted gross income on ticket sales for every show.

To guarantee a revenue stream to the city, the lease agreement requires Red House to hold 50 shows in year one, half of which must be ticketed; in its second year, the entity will be required to hold 100 shows, 75 of which will be ticketed.

The City will cover utilities for the first six months.

Red House Entertainment projects gross ticket sales of $900,000 in the first year (October, 2013 to October, 2014) and projects $2.2 million annually in year two. Performances will begin well before October, 2013.

In comparison, the Paramount’s previous operator’s lease provided no revenue to the city. It required the city to pay its management $50,000 annually in operating support plus utilities. The previous agreement was for 20 years at $1 per year. The maximum number of performances previously required was 60. The previous operator dissolved $500,000 in debt.

This arrangement was not advantageous for the city, so Peekskill took the process seriously in finding a new operator.

The City wanted to ensure a there would be a healthy cash flow for both Red House and the City, as a steady revenue stream is important for the city.

The City wanted to be sure the amount of performances would be doubled.

The City was interested in having the new Paramount operator retain the rich history of arts and education in the city.

The City was seeking to have a closer role with the Paramount’s new operator to ensure stability of operations.

The Mayor is grateful for everyone’s hard work.

Mayor Foster also noted that there is still an outstanding issue with Key Bank, which became the owners of the theater’s equipment when the previous operator dissolved. She says that although Red House can open the theater, they’re still looking to strike a deal with the bank for some of the equipment.

On Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., the City of Peekskill and Red House Entertainment will hold a press conference and public celebration at the Paramount Theater to ceremonially sign the agreement and to announce the lineup of 2013 performances.

The Hudson Valley Chapter of the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Foundation will host its third annual “Cocktails for a Cure” event from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 15 at the Vintage Restaurant & Lounge in White Plains. This year’s theme is “A Vision of Hope,” to celebrate 30 years of research by the PKD Foundation.

The evening benefit will honor Charles J. (Chuck) Newman for his ongoing efforts to raise money and awareness of PKD. He has been involved with the Hudson Valley Chapter for over nine years. Chuck has served as a co-captain for his walk team, Benny’s Brigade, in honor of his father who passed away from PKD. Benny’s Brigade has raised in excess of $41,000.

The foundation will also host Mary Wu, author of “Confessions of a Kidney Transplant Recipient.” She will host a book signing with a portion of the proceeds benefiting PKD. As a two-time kidney transplant recipient with extensive personal and professional backgrounds in healthcare and social services, Mary is a nationally-recognized advocate on behalf of the organ donation and transplantation community.

“PKD affects 1 in 500 Americans, and there is no cure for it yet, but there is hope that through spreading awareness and raising money for research there will soon be help for people with this genetically inherited disease,” Newman said. “Cocktails for a Cure is our way of helping to create awareness about PKD, to raise some money, and to have a lot of fun at the same time.”

The benefit will feature live entertainment by the band, The Past Masters (www.thepastmasters.com). In addition, attendees will have the unique opportunity to have self-portrait drawn by a caricaturist. There will also be food, a silent auction and a raffle.

Anyone interested in attending the benefit can register online at www.pkdcure.org/hudsonvalleycocktails . The fee is $30, or $40 at the door. Space is limited.

She has participated in a number of programs including the Wilfred Jennings Summer Leadership Program, the Junior Staff Program, Money Matters and the Keystone Club, where she served as secretary and then president. In this role, she spearheaded “Families Helping Families,” an event that joins community and club families together to donate Thanksgiving goods and create baskets for those in need during the holidays.

“The Boys & Girls Club is not just a building on Main Street, but rather a place I consider my home away from home,” Stephenson said in a press release. “I’ve been positively influenced by so many of the people here. With their help, I’ve grown to become a mentor for the younger members.”

In addition to her work at the club, Stephenson has volunteered as a candy striper at Northern Westchester Hospital and is a member of her church’s youth group, where she takes part in the monthly food drive.

She has earned high grades throughout her educational career and will further her passion for science by attending Hampton University in September 2013 where she will study at the School of Pharmacy.

Stephenson will be awarded the Youth of the Year honor at the 2013 Humanitarian Award Dinner taking place on Saturday, June 1 at Lexus of Mt. Kisco.
