Stony Point resists power line proposal

Opponents of the proposed Champlain Hudson Power Express project once again packed the meeting room Tuesday night as the project developer came to Stony Point to give updates.

A group of Stony Point residents has expressed opposition to the 1,000-megawatt transmission project because, although most of the transmission line from the Canadian border to its final destination, Astoria, Queens, would be buried under the Hudson River, the cables would emerge in Stony Point to run underground along the CSX railroad right of way before re-entering the Hudson River.

Stony Point town Supervisor Geoffrey Finn said Wednesday that he didn’t want the project to be realized at all if possible. But if it were to happen, he wanted the power line to be buried all the way.

Finn said that in answering his question, the developer told the audience that the shallowest depth for the cables to be buried would be about three to four feet both in the riverbed and in the ground.

“I said, ‘If you’re worried about the fish when you bury three or four feet under the Hudson River, under the mud, how is it not going to affect people living next to the railroad truck?’ And they really didn’t have an answer for us,” Finn said. “Why (the cables) came out from the river is still a mystery to me.”

The developer has said the proposed route for the transmission line has changed after environmentalists, who were alerted by possible negative impacts to the Hudson River Estuary, intervened to reshape the project early in the process. The developer promised to establish a $117 million environmental trust fund to benefit the river’s ecosystem.

Haverstraw to host “Dancing Under the Stars”

The village of Haverstraw and the town of Haverstraw are hosting a free event in the village, “Dancing Under the Stars,” from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday outside of the village hall at 40 New Main St., Haverstraw.

Live music will be performed by No Discipline.

Haverstraw town to host 90-plus recognition day

The town of Haverstraw will be hosting its 7th annual 90-plus recognition day on July 15 at the Bowline Point Park pavilion.

Haverstraw town residents who are or will be 90 years old and beyond before Dec. 31 are encouraged to attend with a guest. There will be a brief ceremony with distribution of gifts and certificates, followed by a light picnic lunch.

To attend the event, contact Town Hall at 845-429-2200.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Haverstraw seniors officers installation picnic.

Planned Parenthood event in Nyack honors Rockland residents

Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic raised $28,000 last week at an event held in Upper Nyack.

The fundraiser honored Rockland residents Sonya and Milton Shapiro and their daughter, Susan Shapiro-Hito.

Funds raised at the event held at the Nyack Beach bath house will help continue a teen leadership programs that trains Rockland high school students as peer educators.

Helen Hayes Hospital seeks volunteers for spinal injury study

Helen Hayes Hospital Center in West Haverstraw is seeking volunteers with spinal cord injury to participate in a spinal reflex training study. Participants are asked to stand or walk while measurements are made. Surface electrodes are placed on the skin over arm or leg muscles for monitoring muscle activity and over a nerve to produce reflex responses in the muscles. Nerve stimulation may cause a brief mild sensation.

Participation will take less than 90 minutes per session. Volunteers will be paid and efforts will be made to accommodate participants’ schedules.

Tappan Zee state softball semfinals update and coverage plans

It is now 7:55 a.m. softball blogger nation and the start time for the Dutchies state semifinal game was pushed back.

They will play at the Adirondack Sports Complex beginning at 11 a.m.

The rain from the leftovers of Tropical Storm Andrea didn’t drain from those fields as quick as they would’ve liked.

So, just a friendly reminder of how to follow the action for today:

If Tappan Zee wins the first game, the state title game will be later on in the day. I’m not quite sure what tie it will be as of now. I will have more as that develops.

TZ pitcher Gutkin rides shutout string to state softball semis

Tappan Zee junior Paulina Gutkin (left) has pitched on another level all season.

Gutkin has posted 29 straight scoreless innings dating to the seventh inning of Tappan Zee’s 3-2 first-round sectional win over Albertus Magnus on May 29. In the past four games, she has allowed 10 hits and two walks while racking up 30 strikeouts.

“I’ve really found my groove,” Gutkin said. “My pitches are working great. I’m not counting the shutouts that I’m getting, I’m just looking at the win.”

Two more wins and the Dutchies will become the first Section 1 softball team to win a state title since Pearl River in 2010. John Jay-East Fishkill won the state championship in Class AA in 2011.

Tappan Zee (20-4) takes a nine-game winning streak into Saturday’s Class A state semifinals against Section 6 champion Hamburg at the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury. A win in the 9 a.m. game puts the Dutchies in the state final against either Section 2’s Troy or Section 11’s Sayville at 2 p.m.

“Everyone’s going to look to their circle for leadership,” Dutchies coach Gene Kousoulas said.

Tappan Zee scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat Maine-Endwell 3-0 in the regional final Wednesday.

“We had many opportunities to push runs across in the Maine-Endwell game,” Kousoulas said. “ ... It’s nice to know that even if we are struggling offensively, we are going to be in the game.”

A big reason for that confidence is Gutkin, who has a 19-4 record with 24 complete games and a 1.09 ERA. She’s struck out 231, walked 37 and allowed 86 hits in 167 innings.

She attributes the success to her work with catcher Kelly Connolly (right).

“The biggest thing was the last game of the season,” Gutkin said. “Kelly and I were really connecting. We connected before then, but in that game, we were really on point with what we wanted to call and when to call it. She’s calling most of the pitches nowadays.”

Tappan Zee is making its first appearance in the state softball final four since 2006. On the bus ride back from Binghamton Wednesday, athletic director Liam Frawley shared a bit of information with the team.

“There have only been three teams in TZ history to have gotten to this point (the state semifinals),” Kousoulas said. “No team has ever gone all the way. So something special is happening here. We don’t want to die here. Let’s finish the job.”
