As the final weekend of the softball season comes to a close, here’s a look at the day’s results:

Casey Macchia went 5 for 6 with a double and drove in a run to propel Suffern to a 13-1 win at New Rochelle and help give coach Jim Lloyd his 300th win in his 20-year varsity coaching career which spans Tuxedo and Chester.

Students are learning the ins and outs of the beauty business….

Yorktown Heights, N.Y. – Blow driers were humming, flat irons were steaming and fans were drying freshly-painted nails as nearly forty special guests enjoyed a morning of pampering during Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES’ Spring Cosmetology Event.

Cosmetology students completing their two-year program at BOCES’ Tech Center invited individuals who had inspired them throughout their lives to the annual event. Mothers, grandmothers and sisters were among those treated to haircuts, manicures and waxing services. The pampering was followed by an extensive buffet brunch prepared by the Tech Center’s culinary students.

“This event is the culmination of two years of work and gives the students an opportunity to showcase their skills,” said teacher Pat Gilman. “It’s the closing of one chapter before they move on to the next phase of their journey.” Some of the students are going directly into the workplace, while many are going on to college or advanced training, according to Gilman.

BOCES’ Cosmetology program is a two-year program for high school juniors and seniors. Upon completion, the students are eligible to take the New York State exam to become licensed cosmetologists.

At the brunch, newly coiffed guests enjoyed eggs, bacon, waffles, bagels and even ice cream sundaes. After the meal, each student presented her guest with a written reflection on how that individual had affected the student’s life. At each table, hugs and tears were plentiful as these moving tributes were read. A raffle topped off the festivities and winners left with beauty products, gift cards, jewelry and candles.

Two students addressed the group during the brunch, describing their experience in the cosmetology program. Kristen Gaunt, a senior from Mahopac High School, said, “I used to not care about my grades or school. My two years at the Tech Center have changed me in a very positive way. I made a second family here.” Casey Ciaramella, also a senior from Mahopac High School, talked about how the program was more challenging than she had expected and “things that were hard at first became easier.” She said that the program had turned out to be “the best choice” and one that had changed her life.

A school foundation dedicated to improving facilities and programs in Lakeland schools gave out a range of grants….

Lakeland teachers, administrators and parents were among the recipients of more than $51,000 in grants awarded by the Lakeland Education Foundation last night.
The LEF presented the Board of Education the check to fund 19 different grants at Thursday (May 16) board meeting held at Van Cortlandtville Elementary school. Created in 1994, the Foundation has now awarded more than $500,000 in grants to help enhance the educational experience of students in the district.
This year’s grants included a number of innovative projects and proposals. Thomas Jefferson, Van Cortlandtville and George Washington elementary schools received $6,000 each to enhance the great work they have already been implementing with the use of iPads. Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School Assistant Principal Chris Cummings was awarded funds to increase communication and develop its very own news station. In a grant submitted by parent Amy Kenny and Principal Karen Gagliardi, Thomas Jefferson ES received a grant to help build an after-school theater program at the school. Other grants ranged from physical education equipment and multi cultural musical instruments to interactive math notebooks and airbrushing equipment.
“This was a busy and very successful year and it feels good to keep writing bigger and better checks each year,” offered Mike Daly, LEF treasurer. “These funds will impact our schools and almost every student in the Lakeland School District.”

The LEF’s final fund raiser for the year will be a June 20th Happy Hour at the Cove in Peekskill with the Foundation’s very own in-house band – Unfunded Mandate. The music will run from 4:30-7:30 pm. All are welcome and a portion of the proceeds will be donated back to the foundation.

The Vikings won their second straight Conference IV League A title.

Fishkin drove in Briana Keaveney from third in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1. Fishkin repeated the feat — driving in Keaveney from third — Then she does it again in the third to put South (14-4, 8-0) ahead.

“I felt great hitting them,” Fishkin said. “It felt good to drive in those two runs to get it going.”

Vikings coach Maura Heebink is impressed with the way her shortstop has been playing all season.

“She hits the ball solidly and she’s a thinking batter,” Heebink said. “She really concentrates and focuses when she gets to the plate. If you are like that, then you as a coach can put them in when you want and they’ll become a clutch hitter like Karly is.”

Step one for the Vikings was to win the league again.

“We knew coming into the season that we had to work a little bit harder since we lost some key players,” Keaveney said (right, Photo credit Frank Beccera Jr./The Journal News). “Our team is able to pick up those key players and keep playing hard. It feels good to win the league.”

Nicole Ritsick went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs for the Vikings.

“I’ve been playing with (Rams pitcher Danielle) Borelli for a lot of years,” Ritsick said. “She’s a pretty good pitcher, so I pretty much went in very confident with my head in the game. I knew that it would be a good day.”

Heebink was impressed with Ritsick at the plate, but the coach said she believes Ritsick’s main value is in the field.

“There’s not a better defensive first baseman in Rockland County,” Heebink said. “She’s saved us so many times. She scoops the ball without hesitation. She hit very well and she’s a very good hitter but she’s the foundation of our infield.”

Keaveney picked up the win, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out 11. She also went 3 for 4 and scored three runs.

“I felt really confident,” Keaveney said. “I felt that my pitches were really working. I was throwing hard. I focused on hitting my spots.”

Sara Herskowitz, Gabby Palumbo, and Megan Atzl each drove in a run for the Vikings. Teammate Brianna Turchiarelli went 2 for 3.

Borelli, who took the loss, went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for the Rams (5-15). Stefanie Lomedico also drove in a run.

“We came out here to play,” Lomedico said. “We tried our best and we came out on the bottom.”

Here’s a look at the rest of the day in Section 1 softball:

– - – -

At Pleasantville, the Panthers’ seniors celebrated senior day with Alicia Marino (left) scattering eight hits to pick up the win in a 9-2 victory over Harrison.

Marino also clubbed a two-run home run. Fellow senior Sara Powers had a bases-clearing triple and five RBI, Stephanie Rogers went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Nancy DelMastro had an RBI. Jordan Valentzas and Jenna Vaccaro drove in the Huskies’ runs.

Hen Hud 8, Beacon 7, 8: At Hen Hud, Anna Strang went 2 for 3had four RBI, including the walk-off single at the bottom of the eighth inning with the bases-loaded to seal the win and the regular season Conference I League C title. Megan Jahoda went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Gabby Caruso pitched eight strikeouts and gave up five earned runs.

Lakeland 5, Yorktown 4, 10: At Lakeland, Jenna Houlahan singled down the rightfield line to score the winning run in the 10th inning for the Hornets. Colleen Walsh struck out 10 and gave up one earned run in notching the victory. Jade Draffin had two RBI for Lakeland. Dominique Bisaccia tripled, homered and had two RBI for the Huskers.

A group of fund-raising youngsters will form a sort of bed pan brigade Saturday, collecting donations for Hudson Valley Hospital Center near the Cortlandt Town Center.

Here’s an announcement of the effort from the hospital center:

Yorktown Leos Use Bedpans to Raise Funds for Hudson Valley Hospital Center Comprehensive Cancer Center Middle and high school students will be out on Route 6 this weekend

Cortlandt Manor, NY – (May 17, 2013) – If you see a bunch of people dressed in hospital gowns carrying bed pans along Route 6 in Cortlandt Manor on Saturday they are not hospital patients who’ve lost their way, but enterprising young fundraisers.

A group of 15-20 students from four middle and high schools in the area will take part in a fundraiser sponsored by the Yorktown Leos on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Route 6 in front of the Cortlandt Town Center.

Yorktown Leos adviser Al Avitable said that he got the idea for collecting money in the bed pans from a fundraiser the Leos did last year for the local 911 memorial using fireman’s boots.

“Given that we’re raising money for Hudson Valley Hospital, I thought it would be more appropriate – and funny – to use bedpans,’’ he said. “I’m hoping they just throw money in and nothing else.’’

Avitable said if the fundraiser is a success the Leos might do it every year. He said Yorktown Lions youth group has about 200 members from Yorktown, Walter Panas and Lakeland High Schools, as well as Copper Beech and Mildred Strang Middle Schools. The students have been very busy this spring, he said, working on community service projects almost every weekend. Avitable said that the Leos raised $4,500 for Support Connection, a support group for breast and ovarian cancer, with a concert last weekend. Last year the Leos raised more than $20,000 for various causes, he said.

Here’s the latest program at the historical society in Cortlandt….

Tastes & Tidbits of Food History: A Sampling of 18th Century Dining at Van Cortlandt Manor will be the topic of a talk by Lavada Nahon, a noted food historian, on Saturday, May 18th, at 2 p.m., at The Little Red Schoolhouse, 297 Locust Avenue, Cortlandt Manor, New York. Sponsored by the Van Cortlandtville Historical Society, the culinary program is open free to the public.

A veteran museum associate at Historic Hudson Valley, Mrs. Nahon will focus on the receipt* book of the historic Manor house, using food samples and a power point photo presentation. As a staff member of Philipsburg Manor Upper Mills in Sleepy Hollow, she lectures on and demonstrates 18th century foodways. And as the owner of Historic Food Works, she brings the taste of 18th and 19th century American food history to life at a variety of venues.

In 2000, Mrs. Nahon began working as a volunteer hearth cook for Historic Hudson Valley and in 2002 she joined the staff as the head hearth cook at Van Cortlandt Manor, where she demonstrated and taught the art of hearth cooking to school children, history teachers, and history buffs. Her culinary training began early in her life as she worked alongside her mother honing her skills.

Mrs. Nahon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, and did graduate work in theater at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. Throughout her college career she worked in a variety of food-related positions in a number of restaurants where her interest in food history began. In the mid-1980’s, she studied wine at the International Wine Center in New York for five years, followed by her study of distilled spirits in various countries around the world.

For nine years she was senior editor for Penthouse Magazine, in charge of lifestyles columns—including “Wine & Spirits,” “Food,” and “Travel”— working with such noted professionals as Alexis Bespaloff and Gael Greene. For more than 15 years she studied American food history with leaders in the field, such as Andrew Smith, Dr. Alice Ross and Peter Rose. She has also owned a number of food-related businesses, including the catering company Always Ready, The Kids and Me Bakery, and The Mimosa Tree, a tea salon in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Mrs. Nahon and her husband, David, reside in Peekskill with their two teenage children.

The Ossining school district reached a contract agreement with its teachers that gives them 1.6 percent raises for 2013-14, but no increases for the following three years.

They would still receive step increases, although they will be lessened, and teachers will pay more for their health insurance.

Here’s a press release from the district:

Ossining Teachers Settle Contract

OSSINING, N.Y. – Working together, the Ossining Board of Education and Ossining Teachers Association have reached a new four-year agreement that will help preserve Ossining’s high quality educational programs while holding the line on taxes.

The new agreement calls for 0 percent salary increases in three of the four years covered, increased health insurance contributions from teachers and reduced step increases. Had the two sides failed to reach an agreement, the provisions of the existing contract, which expires on June 30th, would have remained in force under the Triborough Amendment of state labor law.

“Given the economic times, both sides came to the table in good faith and worked collaboratively for the good of the district,” said Ossining Teacher Association President Bob Rosenbaum. “We recognized the needs of the community and the district’s need to maintain educational programs. What we did will allow for continuity in our educational program and lay the foundation for future collaboration.”

Ossining Superintendent Raymond Sanchez praised the teachers for meeting with district representatives early and reaching an agreement before the current contract expired. “Both sides were committed to coming together to address the fiscal challenges facing the district while keeping the needs of the students front and center,” Sanchez said.

Board of Education President Bill Kress said, “I would like to thank the teachers for recognizing the fiscal times we live in and agreeing to a contract that will allow us to continue to provide a world-class education for our students.”

Key provisions of the contract include:

No salary increases in 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017;

A 1.6% salary increase in 2013-2014;

Teachers eligible for step increases in years three and four of the contract would receive only one-half step;

Teacher contributions to health insurance premiums would increase from 12 percent to 14 percent in 2016-2017;

To better serve our students, Ossining Middle School teachers agreed to work with small groups of students once every four days for the purposes of academic support.

The Ossining Teacher Association voted to ratify the agreement on April 22nd and and the Board of Education voted to approve the contract on May 14th.

Here’s an announcement about affordable housing development in Yorktown…

This Thursday, May 16th at 11:00 AM, Marathon Development Group will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their newest community, Underhill Crossing, a sixty (60) unit affordable housing property, located in Yorktown Heights, NY.
Financed with 9% Low Incoming Housing Tax Credits awarded by New York State Homes & Community Renewal (“HCR”), the preservation of Underhill Crossing as affordable housing was imperative to Westchester County, as it is one of the few affordable housing properties located in Yorktown Heights. Marathon worked together with HCR and local elected officials to ensure residents in Yorktown Heights had an option for quality, affordable housing.
With a total development cost of $10.3 million, Underhill Crossing is Marathon’s most recent redevelopment project. Marathon renovated the building’s interior and exterior; with new kitchens and baths, and increased accessibility as well as numerous green features including Energy Star appliances and LED lighting, LOW-E/Argon windows, new roofs with additional insulation, , water conserving fixtures, high efficiency boilers and motors, low VOC paint and two rooftop solar/photovoltaic systems.
“I am extremely proud of the modernization of Underhill Crossing and its preservation as affordable housing,” said Mark Soja, President of Marathon Development Group. “The successful development of Underhill Crossing shows that with support of NY State and local government, attractive, high quality affordable housing that fits in with the surrounding community is possible in Westchester County.”

Their report was timed to come before a meeting hosted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission this evening to talk about the 2012 annual safety assessment. That assessment gave Indian Point 2 and 3 a green rating, meaning that findings from inspections showed “very low safety significance.”

It also preceded a 6 p.m. Tuesday meeting hosted by the NRC at the Doubletree Hotel, 455 S. Broadway, Tarrytown.

The report card from opponents, including leaders of Riverkeeper and Clearwater, came to a different conclusion, giving the facility an “F.”

They assigned their critical grade to the NRC as well as Entergy, which owns Indian Point.

“The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is going through the motions on Indian Point,” said Riverkeeper Paul Gallay. “They’re not considering the government report about shadow evacuation and the fact that we could not evacuate Indian Point in the case of an emergency. They’re not considering fire safety adequately. They’re not forcing Entergy to move spent fuel to dry cast storage. They’re not considering earthquake risk which they themselves have assessed as being greatest at this plant of any of America’s reactors.”

(“Shadow evacuation” refers to people beyond the official evacuation zone also fleeing their homes in fear, complicating matters.)

Jerry Nappi, a spokesman for Entergy, the owner of the Buchanan facility, came to the press conference to counter their views. Also supporting Indian Point were representatives of the New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance.

“Indian Point is a thoroughly scrutinized facility,” Nappi said after the conference. “The NRC spent more than 10,000 person hours inspecting it last year alone and because of the investment we’ve made in the plant, we can demonstration that it operates safely….Entery has invested more than $100 million since 911 on security alone and were able to demonstrate through drills.

Among the opponents’ criticisms was that Indian Point did not power down during the destruction wrought by Superstorm Sandy, and that consequently, an emergency shut-down was required at 10 pm the night of the storm.

Richard Thomas, director of NY AREA and a supporter of the plant, said the shut-down was caused by a problem with the regional power grid, not a problem with the plant.

To Nappi, the facility’s performance during the storm was another demonstration of how badly it is needed.

“During Superstorm Sandy, we were one of the few pieces of electricity infrastructure that came through the storm unscathed,” he said.
