Pedro Martinez completed his final spring training tune-up this morning, throwing 80 pitches in six innings in a minor league intra-squad game.

Martinez is scheduled to start the second game of the season at Florida.

Coming off shoulder surgery, Martinez made only five starts last year. He took it slowly this spring and said he's healthy, and that if he remains healthy, ``things will happen.''

Moises Alou showed up in camp this morning to spend the last week of spring training with his teammates. Alou hopes to begin baseball-related activities in two weeks and said his goal is to play before the end of April.

Alou underwent hernia surgery, March 6, and is now riding an exercise bike.

Alou said he didn't do anything strenuous, but woke up with a sharp pain in the groin area.

Willie Randolph anticipates the news being good on today's injuries. Carlos Delgado went to NY for a MRI on his right hip. The results could come later tonight. Ryan Church sustained a concussion and Marlon Anderson a bruised chest when they collided in the outfield.

Randolph also praised pitching prospects Jonathan Niese and Robert Parnell, and said it was good catching up with Joe Torre.

The Mets greeted the day with the news Carlos Delgado was in New York for a MRI on his right hip. It's the same one he injured last year and missed nearly three weeks.

Omar Minaya doesn't seem concerned, but it's early. The Mets have some temporary options, but if this guy goes down for a month or two, they'll have problems.

Mike Pelfrey was impressive this afternoon, giving up one hit in two scoreless innings against the Tigers.

Pelfrey entered the game wanting to establish his fastball and challenge hitters in the zone, which he was able to do by falling behind only one batter. For this early in the spring, he flashed dominance.

Willie Randolph believes Carlos Delgado will have a bounce-back season and last year was just an off-year and not the beginning of the end. If Delgado has another year like last season, then maybe.

Randolph said he's also pleased with the energy in camp and with how reliever Duaner Sanchez is throwing.

Mets manager Willie Randolph said he turned the page on last season when he arrived in Florida the last week.

``Spring training is a time of renewal,'' Randolph said. ``It's a time for optimism and a chance to feel something special possibly happening again.''

Randolph said:

-Jose Reyes went through a slump and nothing more at the end of last season.

-There aren't many position battles on the team, but that could change with injuries.

-The addition of Johan Santana gives the Mets a swagger, but they also need continued improvement from John Maine and Oliver Perez.

-And for now, Ryan Church is the right fielder.
