LOL 49 News: Death of Brother Ian Knight

LOL 49 is sad to intimate the passing of Brother Ian Knight. Brother Knight had been battling cancer throughout the last year of his life. He was a long time member of LOL 49 as well as a Sir Knight in the Royal Black Preceptory 674 The Rising Star of Springburn. Funeral arrangements will be posted here shortly.

LOL 49 News: Glasgow 2011 Boyne Celebration

The annual Boyne Celebrations took place on Saturday the 2nd of July. The day was a huge success and the members of LOL 49 would like to thank all the supporters who came along and had an enjoyable day in the sunshine. Despite the loss of several parade routes, the members enjoyed the day and also produced the best turnout in the Springburn district for several years. Pictures of the walk can be seen here.

LOL 49 News: Boyne Celebration parade format

The annual Boyne Celebrations will take place in Glasgow this coming Saturday (03.07.11). The format will be slightly different to previous years: all parades from the Worthy Master's houses will not take place this year. Please meet at Springburn Orange Halls for 8.30am to marshal up and leave at 9am sharp. The procession will then walk through the city centre and onto Glasgow Green. The speeches will then take place and the return parade will commence immediately, returning to Springburn Orange Halls. It is expected that we will be back in Springburn for approximately 4pm.

News LOL 49: Wilson Craig Memorial Parade

The Wilson Craig Memorial parade will take place on Saturday the 25th of June. It will be started with a service and wreath laying at the Cenotaph on Auchinairn Road at 3.30pm. Brothers wishing to parade will marshal up at 3.45pm, with the parade itself leaving at 4pm. Please note the earlier times for the parade this year in order to comply with the rules of Glasgow City Council which has stated that no parades will take place after 6pm.

I've just come across some old footage of Springburn on youtube, this has been taken on an 8mm camera and is shot in the 1950s according to the notes. Given the timescale I think that this is a tremendous piece of footage and worthy of a look.

* Parade details, Glasgow City Centre, Saturday 22nd January 2011: The parade marshalling area on Saturday has been changed to Wishart Street at 9.30am. The parade will commence to shall take the route to George Square for the memorial service. This service is open to anybody and the County Grand Master has issued an open invite to all. A large attendance is expected, please invite your friends and family along. This is the first step in a long, hard road to keeping our marching rights.

The Grand Orange Institution of Ireland has elected Bro Edward Stevenson to the position of Grand Master. Bro Stevenson, the former Deputy Grand Master, replaces Bro Robert Saulter who stepped down in November 2010 after 14 years in position. The full story from UTV can be found here

The page will continue to grow, please do not be offended if a relative of yours is not included.
