The Box House Hotel: A Brooklyn Staycation

My boyfriend and I recently had the opportunity to spend a weekend at The Box House Hotel in Greenpoint, a neighborhood we frequent as residents of Long Island City just minutes away. If you ever find yourself passing over the Pulaski Bridge in New York, this hotel is likely the first thing to catch your eye. With a bold black exterior and gorgeous glass-encased rooftop space, The Box House is a standout building among Greenpoint's quiet streets.

The first thing that struck me about our loft suite at the hotel was its size. It was at least double the size of any other New York hotel room I have stayed in and fully equipped with all kitchen necessities, a cozy lounge space, and a bedroom separated by a closet partition. With two TVs and natural light that flooded into the room, it was the perfect space for relaxation all weekend.

The Box House also offers drinks and dining at its colorful on-site restaurant, Brooklyn Lantern. In this vibrant, light-filled space, you can enjoy updated American cuisine along with refreshing cocktails. Our breakfast spread included egg's benedict, a brioche french toast, and the "eggs your way", making for a delicious start to the day. You can't go wrong with the happy hour menu later on either. Whether you're staying at The Box House or not, Brooklyn Lantern is a solid choice for dining should you find yourself exploring Greenpoint.

Overall we had an absolutely lovely stay at The Box House Hotel because of everything from our cozy room to the dining options, and of course, the location. Greenpoint has always been one of my favorite neighborhoods in New York City for its quiet charm. The hotel is right around the corner from some of my favorite neighborhood spots including Le Fanfare, Glasserie, and Bakeri. There is nothing like waking up on a Sunday morning for a leisurely stroll to grab coffee without the typical urban chaos. Staying in the area made all the difference!

A Weekend in Old San Juan

If you read my last post you'll know that my friend Van and I recently went on a weekend adventure to the beautiful Puerto Rican city of Old San Juan. As I mentioned there, the city has been resilient since the devastation of Hurricane Maria and is ready to welcome tourists back to its colorful streets. The best way to support its recovery is with your travel dollars, and in turn you will enjoy a trip of energetic culture, amazing food, and an overall friendly atmosphere.

I can't stress more the importance of visiting Old San Juan now more than ever, and luckily getting there is generally low-cost and hassle-free. Hopefully these photos will convince you to book a trip to explore and support this colorful, incredibly unique city.

Where To Stay:

We stayed in the dreamy Hotel El Convento, a historic luxury hotel at the center of Old San Juan. For a full review of everything the hotel has to offer, feel free to read my last post here.

Where To Go:

The best way to get around Old San Juan is by foot. Because we were short on time, we spent the weekend wandering through the colorful streets and simply enjoying Old San Juan's lively culture. It was nice to return to the city having already hit the major tourist spots, as we spent this weekend on a more spontaneous schedule.

Some of the major spots to visit for first-time travelers are the two main fortresses, El Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal, the lovely promenade of Paseo La Princesa, and a number of art galleries. I also recommend extending your trip to visit other nearby areas of Puerto Rico, such as Condado or Vieques for beach getaways.

What To Eat:

It should come as no surprise that San Juan has some of the best food you'll have on any travel experience. We've had the chance to enjoy a few of the many delicious Puerto Rican dishes, and all have been memorable proven by our decisions to revisit several favorite spots. With just two days we tried to fit in as many meals as possible with no regrets. The flavors you'll experience here are guaranteed to keep you coming back.

Breakfast: La Mallorca

My coworker spent a lot of her childhood visiting family in San Juan and highly recommended this low-key, authentic spot for mallorca. This delicious treat is a sweet bread best paired with Puerto Rican coffee in the morning, and even with ham and swiss for a savory option. I can honestly say I wish I could have this for breakfast every morning.

Lunch: Cafe Puerto Rico

My personal favorite spot for mofongo! Van and I had both eaten here before and knew we had to go back for this signature Puerto Rican dish. I went for a yuca mofongo with shrimp and enjoyed every single bite.

Afternoon Snack: Pirilo Pizza Rustica

Yes, we had pizza in San Juan. Van swore this pizza was amazing based on her first trip, and she wasn't wrong. We snacked on a thin crust pie with truffle oil and salmon mousse - paired with mojitos, of course.

Tapas: Verde Mesa

We accidentally found ourselves in this incredible restaurant I had dined at with my boyfriend four years ago. Verde Mesa's head chef was recently nominated for a James Beard Award and rightfully so. This hidden gem serves innovative small plates using local ingredients in an absolutely stunning space. Along with the delicious food is an overall friendly experience in terms of service. We had great conversation with the staff and enjoyed some personalized cocktails that I only wish I could recreate!

Dinner (not pictured): Marmalade

For a fantastic upscale dining experience, book a table at Marmalade located in the heart of Old San Juan. Van had also dined here with her boyfriend and raved about the experience. Marmalade offers unique pricing options by number of courses, giving you the chance to enjoy a variety of dishes. We opted for four courses priced at a reasonable $69, and the main highlight was the restaurant's famous white bean soup. Overall it was the perfect way to finish out our weekend trip.

Drinks (not pictured): La Factoria

You can't visit Old San Juan without experiencing its vibrant nightlife, and La Factoria is the best place to do it. Housed in a four-room speakeasy, this bar has everything from a salsa dancing floor to a more intimate space for date night. The experience is nothing but pure fun - we even learned how to (kind of) salsa dance!

Where To Stay in Old San Juan (& Why You Should Visit Now)

Four years ago, my friend Van and I traveled to Old San Juan separately with our boyfriends before knowing each other outside of Instagram. We recently had the chance to return to this colorful Puerto Rican city, which now more than ever is worth the visit for anyone looking to plan a new trip. Following the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria, tourism is extremely important to Puerto Rico's ongoing recovery efforts.

Old San Juan especially is ready to welcome visitors, with streets as vibrant as ever and cultural experiences to remember. We spent just a weekend in the city this time around, but will no doubt be making another trip soon. It is a place that continues to hold some of our best memories, and one that continues to create more. I highly encourage any travelers to pay a visit to Puerto Rico soon, as your tourist dollars help rebuild and restore the island.

I will be sharing our Old San Juan itinerary in a separate post soon, but in the meantime scroll on to find out our suggestion for the best accommodations in town:

Van and I enjoyed a stay at the historic Hotel El Convento, a landmark that began as a convent over three centuries ago. Now standing as a luxury hotel with over 50 rooms, it is a fantastic choice for travelers looking for some of the best accommodations in Old San Juan. The photos cannot do the hotel justice, with its vibrant yellow exterior and airy verandas all around. Its location is ideal for food, drinks, and almost everything else - there isn't much more you can ask for.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Hotel El Convento has recovered beautifully and continues to offer unforgettable accommodations and amenities to its guests. Start your vacation with an al fresco breakfast at Patio del Nispero, the hotel's centrally-located courtyard restaurant. Complete the leisurely morning with a dip in the rooftop pool, which is accompanied by stunning views over the old town. We spent both mornings lounging on this terrace and enjoying the warm Puerto Rican sunshine before heading out to town.

The rooms at Hotel El Convento are both uniquely designed and extra cozy, proven by the fact that we basically forgot to take photos while lounging around in our robes. As much as I love a productive day of travel, it is never a bad idea to take breaks for planning and rejuvenating. The room's amenities provided everything we could think of and more. We were so comfortable that we ended up ordering Sunday's breakfast to the room (tip: ask for the cappuccino)!

Each evening the hotel hosts happy hour with complimentary wine, cheese, and fruit. With the sunset gleaming in the background, it is the perfect time to unwind from a day of exploring and prepare for the San Juan nightlife.

Miami to Key West: A Road Trip Diary

With winter still going strong and turning snowstorms into bomb cyclones, a trip to the beach felt more than necessary. My family and I spent five days in January traveling between Miami and Key West to enjoy some Floridian sunshine before finishing out New York's greyest season. The Florida Keys had been on our travel lists for quite some time, with its mix of beautiful views and quirky charm and not much hassle to get there. For anyone planning a quick east coast trip that rewards with relaxation, read on for highlights from our road trip through south Florida.

Day One: Morning in Miami

We flew into Miami International Airport late Wednesday night and spent the majority of Thursday exploring the city before driving down to Key West. I highly recommend reserving at least a half-day for this bustling city -- there is never a shortage of things to do (and eat).

Start with breakfast at Wynwood's MIAM Café for a simple, but delicious wake up call.
Feed your Instagram with photos at Wynwood Walls. It is a must-see in Miami for any art and culture lovers looking for an activity outside of the beach.
Snack on popsicles at Cielito Artisan Pops. Their popsicles are literal works of art.
Grab a seafood lunch at Mignonette. I recommend trying conch if you haven't already!
Work on your tan at South Beach, Miami's top destination (for good reason). Stroll Collins Avenue for a taste of some unique Art Deco architecture as well.

Day One (con't): Key Biscayne & Key Largo

Just before driving down to the Keys, we stopped at Key Biscayne's Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park to catch a stunning sunset. Views like this never get old. We spent the rest of the evening driving down to our hotel in Tavernier (about 1.5 hrs away), with a dinner stop at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen for stone crab, conch, and the famous key lime pie.

To save our energy, we chose to stay overnight at the Atlantic Bay Resort in Tavernier. It is a modest hotel with its own small stretch of beach, making it a relaxing midway point to Key West.

Day Two: A Slow Start in Key West

The name of the game in the Florida Keys is ultimate relaxation. Our first day was a slower one, as we wanted to leisurely explore the island without any time limitations. Unlike New York City, there is no sense of hurry in Key West -- in the best way possible.

Grab fuel before the drive at Made 2 Order in Tavernier. You can't beat the waterside views while you dine on a hearty breakfast.
Arrive in Key West two hours later, after driving along the scenic highway and over the famous Seven Mile Bridge.
Check-in at The Perry Hotel in Stock Island. This is a newer hotel situated about ten minutes away from central Key West. We loved our stay here for the modern amenities, gorgeous pool area, and ease of access to downtown.
Experience a piece of history at the Truman Little White House. My family always schedules in a few cultural and historical activities on any trip, and in Key West that means visiting notable homes. The 30-minute tour here is brief, but very informative for anyone interested in history.
Stroll with the tourists down Duval Street. This is definitely the most tourist-concentrated street in Key West, but no visit is complete without stopping into its various stores and ice cream shops.
Catch sunset at Mallory Square - it is home to a daily sunset celebration, after all.
Indulge in tapas at Santago's Bodega. This was by far my favorite meal in The Keys!

Day Three: Water Adventures

Most of our day was spent either enjoying or recovering from a morning jet ski tour around Key West. If you are looking for adventure, definitely sign up for one of these tours by jet ski, kayak, or paddleboard. It is the best way to see the island!

Gear up for a two-hour jet ski tour with Key West Water Tours. There are several tour options around the island, but this one is closest to the Perry Hotel and the best value. We spent the morning circling the entire island of Key West, and I may or may not have taken an unintentional swim in the process. Regardless, this was my favorite part of the trip! Pro tip: the early morning tours are usually cheaper than any others during the day.
Grab a casual lunch at Hurricane Hole Marina. If you join Key West Water Tours, they offer vouchers for free beer and discounted meals at this dockside restaurant.
Lounge by the pool for the afternoon -- because after jet skiing, you will need it.
Or, lounge by the seaside at Smathers and/or Higgs Beach. Key West is not known for its beaches, but its two main stretches are still worth a short stroll or bike ride.
Dress up for dinner at Hot Tin Roof. We celebrated my parents' anniversary at this more upscale restaurant by Mallory Square. Time it correctly, and you'll even catch sunset while dining.

Day Four: Finishing Touches

To finish out our trip we visited what is likely Key West's most famous home, the former residence Ernest Hemingway. Even for those who are not interested in history, I highly recommend this visit to at least experience a beautiful Floridian home and its current residents -- almost 60 cats. About 60% of the cats have six toes on each paw, and 100% of them are adorable, I promise.

Enjoy a flavorful southern brunch at Firefly. This was another favorite meal on the trip, although be prepared for a strong food coma afterwards. We indulged in everything from fried chicken and okra to buttery biscuits -- be sure to make a reservation.
Step into history at Ernest Hemingway's former home and meet the adorable family of cats that still resides there.
Exercise your way to a view over Key West at the Key West Lighthouse, across the street from Ernest Hemingway's home.
Begin your return back up the Keys and towards Miami. We stayed overnight at the Atlantic Bay Resort once again to take a halfway break.
Grab a dinner halfway at Skippers Dockside in Key Largo.

Day Five: Back to Miami

We took an early morning drive back to Miami from Tavernier in order to enjoy a few final hours in the sunshine state. Needless to say it was difficult to leave.

Take a stunning drive through "Millionaire's Row" on North Bay Road near Miami Beach. This street is home to some of Miami's most impressive (and expensive) mansions.
Enjoy a morning seaside stroll at South Beach, again. We had some time to kill before lunch and took a short walk on a different part of the beach.
Explore Miami's upscale side in the design district. Although I can only dream of buying anything here, the design district is absolutely worth a visit. Its quiet pedestrian walkways are lined with unique art installations, including an adorable group of swinging chairs that led to us running late to lunch.
Go Greek at Mandolin Aegean Bistro for lunch. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant in the future! Everything from the authentic flavors to its lively outdoor patio was on point.

Two Day Trips in the French Riviera

Within the French Riviera is a cluster of beautiful coastal towns, all with their own unique characters. During our short time in Nice we took two day trips outside of the city to discover more of the charm that southern France has to offer. Between the colorful streets of Villefranche and the cobblestone alleyways of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, these brief ventures outside of Nice only made us want to return for more. We were only able to visit a tiny handful of the possible day trips in the Côte d'Azur, but I highly recommend exploring both if you find yourself in the area.

VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER

Situated just minutes away from Nice, this vibrant fishing village can be explored in a few hours, or for an entire day. It is said to be one of the most charming and picturesque villages in the French Riviera, and upon visiting there is no question why. The town's narrow streets are lined with pastel-colored buildings that face a beautiful open bay and sandy beaches. We spent a few hours strolling the village before I had to work, which is much easier in the winter given the lack of crowds. While there isn't a huge range of things to do, simply getting lost in the quiet streets of Villefranche is enough to enjoy your time there.

HIGHLIGHTS

Dine at Le Mayssa Beach. This terrace restaurants sits right on the bay, overlooking both the water and neighboring towns of Nice and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. While the food is a bit on the expensive side, I'd say it is worth the experience and taste. We stopped by for a lunch of grilled squid and truffle linguine -- every minute of the experience was lovely.

Take an eerie walk through Rue Obscura. We didn't end up taking photos here because honestly, we were a bit scared of this dark covered street. Rue Obscura is a vaulted passageway from the 1200s, where the population would take shelter from attacks. Now, it is a historical path to walk through that contrasts drastically from the town's colorful streets.

Stroll and snack at the quai. This is the seaside strip that houses terrace cafés and restaurants facing the harbor. It is a place to relax and soak in both the sun and southern French culture. During the summer, you can enjoy a lazy afternoon on the sandy beaches as well.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Nice, take the #82 or #122 bus towards Monaco, or take a 15-minute Uber ride. We had also planned to take the same bus route to Eze in the morning but didn't end up having time.

SAINT-PAUL-DE-VENCE

As one of the oldest medieval towns in the French Riviera, Saint-Paul-de-Vence makes you feel like you're walking through a storybook. An hour-long bus ride from Nice will take you to this hilltop village lined with art galleries and cafés on cobblestone streets. It is a small town with a lot to offer if you are interested in French history, art, and overall charm. Surprisingly we were around many more tourists here than in Villefranche, though there were enough winding alleys to get lost in that it never felt overcrowded.

HIGHLIGHTS

Grab lunch at a local café. The narrow alleyways are filled with small restaurants, and in France especially you can feel confident enough to stop into any of them without scouring Yelp reviews. We decided on a tiny crêperie owned by a local couple -- it was truly a hidden gem as I can't seem to find the name online now!

Shop the boutiques and admire artwork. Saint-Paul-de-Vence is filled with unique galleries and shops, selling everything from varieties of balsamic vinegar to luxury perfumes. One of the most notable boutiques in the village is the Maison Godet, both for its lovely fragrances and picturesque exterior. We didn't have much time to explore the galleries and museums, but there are many options to choose from if you are interested.

Take in the landscape views from the southern terrace. For the most dreamy views over the hills of southern France, head out to the terrace that wraps partly around the village from its south end. Even in the winter, the scenery is stunning. Within your view will be rolling hills lined with trees and beautiful homes that I can only dream of living in. Like Villefranche, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a town meant for strolling, and both are truly worth every step.

HOW TO GET THERE

Take the #400 bus from the Albert 1er stop in Nice towards Vence. Before departing, grab a croissant breakfast at the famous Chez Maître Pierre. About an hour after departing, you will arrive at the Saint-Paul-de-Vence Village stop.

OTHER RECOMMENDED DAY TRIPS:

We would have loved to visit other towns within the French Riviera if given the time, but that is all the more reason to visit again in the future. I read about several other great options and thought I'd share them here, some that are more famous than others:

Winter in Nice, France

Happy 2018! With a new year always comes new commitments, and I'd like to put this blog back at the forefront of mine. My sister and I closed out 2017 in Europe, with most of our time spent in the stunning Côte Azur, or French Riviera. Despite winter being the off-season in this region, it still offers all the beauty and charm of any other season in southern France, without the hoards of tourists.

We stayed in Nice as a base to explore both the city itself and its surrounding towns. It is a colorful city of both old and new charm, an evolving culinary scene, and beautiful seaside views. Life feels easier in the French Riviera, especially with an overall quietude present in its winter air. As much as Nice is an ideally central location for trips to nearby towns, it offers a memorable cultural experience on its own -- some of which I'm sharing in this first post of the new year.

WHERE TO STAY

Located a bit outside central Nice, the port area is just as beautiful, but much quieter. We found a charming Airbnb located at a fifteen-minute walk away from the old town. While there are obvious perks to finding a centrally located stay, this home offered a nice way to return to a quiet space after a day of activities. I highly recommend booking a stay at one of our host's four homes around the French Riviera -- he was extremely hospitable and helpful in guiding us through our trip.

WHERE TO GO

Within Nice are various distinct areas that any visit to the coastal city should include. As we were on limited time, below are the must-see highlights I would suggest:

Vieux Nice (Old Nice) - Get lost in the narrow streets of Old Nice and explore the city's historical culture. Its main highlight is very clearly the cuisine, especially at the vibrant food/flowers market, Cours Saleya.
Place Masséna & Place Garibaldi - Both these squares are full of energy, colors, and of course, tourists. But that shouldn't deter you from visiting - I couldn't help but feel drawn to the checkerboard tiles and pastel tones of these bustling areas.
Promenade des Anglais - Nothing defines the French Riviera like the seaside. The Promenade des Anglais is the walking path in Nice that lines the Mediterranean coast for over four miles and offers one of the nicest strolls in town.
The Christmas Market (winter only) - Although we didn't visit during peak season, one of the main perks of traveling to Nice around Christmastime is its market. We took advantage of the 8-euro ferris wheel ride at sunset for some of the best views in the city.

WHERE TO EAT

Because we visited between Christmas and New Year's, almost all the restaurants I had planned to visit were closed for business. Despite our initial disappointment, the nice thing about France is its guarantee that you'll find great food without struggle. We ended up happening upon restaurants/cafés with little planning and still enjoyed some memorable meals.

Marinette - A charming café with a delicious breakfast set - we only wished we had the time to try their lunch as well.
Chez Pipo - The best place in town for Nice's famous socca: a thin, crispy pancake to try as its original and with a variety of fillings.
Chez Maître Pierre - One of Nice's most popular bakeries, which has been open for over 30 years.
Movida - Not quite the most local option as we were in a rush to find dinner, but it's a fun place for drinks by the sea with a side of live music.

WHAT TO DO

With such limited time in the city itself, we narrowed down our activities to a few highlights that let us explore as much as possible. Keep in mind these are largely specific to winter (one day we'll be back to enjoy the beach!):

Climbing to the best views at Parc de la Colline du Chateau
Enjoying local goods at the massive Cours Saleya
Discovering art and history at Musée Matisse & MAMAC
and of course, strolling through the areas I had mentioned above

Santa Fe, New Mexico: A Travel Guide

Beauty is often found in the most unexpected places, and this trip was a prime example. I knew very little about New Mexico before visiting, but now understand its nickname as the Land of Enchantment. It is a region of art, architecture, and scenery unlike any other place. Many people view it simply as a destination for retirement, but I argue that your trip can be much more. Between hiking through massive rock formations and road tripping through the desert, Santa Fe is the perfect hub for both cultural immersion and adventure.

Day One: Downtown Santa Fe

We landed in the early afternoon at the smallest airport I've ever seen, just twenty minutes away from town. I highly recommend renting a car as the public transportation will limit your exploration opportunities. The most notable downtown destination is The Plaza, where boutiques, galleries, and restaurants line the quiet streets. Santa Fe's colorful adobe architecture is unlike anywhere else in the country, a refreshing contrast from the concrete jungle here in New York.

After strolling the Plaza for a few minutes, we quickly made our way to the nearby Canyon Road Arts district, which houses over one hundred art galleries. Exploring this area is a must when in Santa Fe, as its combination of art and architecture embodies so much of the culture in The City Different.

I will be sharing restaurant recommendations at the end of this post, but had to place a special highlight on Santa Fe's Kakáwa Chocolate House. Inside this tiny building is an endless collection of all things chocolate, from truffles to spicy elixirs. Given the time I would have visited every day, as the chocolate here was some of the best I've had.

Where to Stay: Hotel Santa Fe

Shortly before dinner we checked in at our hotel located just minutes from The Plaza, Hotel Santa Fe. This is the city's only Native American-owned hotel, and its design details show it. The hotel maintains the beauty of tradition and culture, providing you with the ultimate Santa Fe experience as you travel.

Day Two: Taos

Nearby Santa Fe is the historic town of Taos, though visiting the area itself is only half the fun. Parallel to the main highway is New Mexico's famous High Road to Taos, a scenic route with hidden historic stops along the way. The most notable stop we made was at the Santuario de Chimayó, a 19th-century church area tucked away within an old weaving village.

After less than two hours of driving you'll arrive in Taos, where the most famous sight is Taos Pueblo. This community has been inhabited for over one thousand years, making it one of the oldest pueblos in America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I knew very little about this part of New Mexico's history prior to visiting the pueblo, but its well-detailed (and free) tours provided a great way to experience the culture. You can't visit Taos without spending at least an hour here.

Another must-see in Taos is the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, which crosses a deep gorge surrounding the famous river. You won't need long here, but it is a sight worth seeing even if only for a few minutes. Around the bridge is also a recreation area for a quiet stroll above the gorge.

Like Santa Fe, Taos has no shortage of lovely, traditional architecture that speaks to the area's culture. Nearby Taos Plaza are streets of galleries and stores that offer a nice browse before dinner.

Day Three: The Tent Rocks

By far my favorite part of this trip was our hike at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. It was a hike unlike any I've taken before, with stunning rock formations, winding canyons, and incredible views overlooking the desert. At only an hour's drive away from Santa Fe, it felt like a world away. You can easily finish this hike in about two hours (unless you stop for as many photos as I did), so scheduling this in should be a no-brainer.

As a reward for completing the hike we ended the day with a hot tub soak at Sunrise Springs Spa Resort. For $45, you can relax in a private outdoor hot tub that overlooks the hotel grounds for one hour. Needless to say this was the perfect conclusion to both a day of hiking and the trip as a whole.

Where To Eat:

I can honestly say that we did not have one disappointing meal in New Mexico - in fact, all were fantastic. Santa Fe itself has a growing culinary culture that encompasses a variety of cultures. From modern Mexican cuisine to a local favorite French brunch, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experiences throughout the state.

La Boca - for incredibly delicious tapas and live music (this was my favorite meal of the trip).
Common Fire (Taos) - for a contemporary lunch that any city dwellers will definitely enjoy.
Elevation Coffee (Taos) - for great coffee, friendly service, and innovative latte art.
The Love Apple (Taos) - for modern Mexican cuisine and a beautiful patio setting.
Sweetwater Harvest Kitchen - for a very healthy lunch (after your hike, of course).
Paloma Restaurant - for more Mexican cuisine! The tacos and ceviche were noteworthy.
Clafoutis - for surprisingly amazing French-inspired dishes. Go early for brunch!
Modern General - for coffee with a side of shopping. Next time I'm trying the corncakes too.

Less Luggage, More Travel: The Best Weekender Bag

One of the main ways I'm able to travel while maintaining a full-time job is through small trips to cities that don’t require much more than a long weekend. With this mentality, alongside my mom’s fifty-state plan, I’ve been able to explore some incredible destinations that were not necessarily high on my travel list.

The most recent of these trips was to Santa Fe, where my mom and I discovered the hidden gem that is the Land of Enchantment (a.k.a. New Mexico). Between the colorful, traditional architecture to the sweeping desert scenery, it was an unexpectedly amazing destination for a brief getaway.

For these shorter trips, packing lightly is the one of the keys to avoiding extra stress when you have limited time. I’ve been through my fair share of travel bags, but this time I found a favorite in the Lo & Sons Catalina tote.

With multiple pockets including a large compartment at the base, staying organized with the Catalina is no challenge. 5 Destinations For A Leisurely Weekend In The Hudson Valley

Autumn is arguably the best time to visit New York's Hudson Valley, hence the reason this is my second consecutive blog post about the area. Despite summer allowing for sunny adventures on the water, fall brings out an explosion of color and temperatures that encourage both activity and relaxation. For anyone looking for an easy, stress-free weekend away from the city, this is the place to be.

My boyfriend and I were treated with a weekend stay at the Time Nyack, a uniquely designed boutique hotel located just an hour away from New York City. Using the hotel as a hub, its location is ideal when visiting other parts of the Hudson Valley. We ultimately made several stops throughout the region because of this convenience, visiting everything from an outdoor sculpture center to an apple orchard for cider tastings.

The Time Nyack

Located just off the highway, the Time Nyack is the perfect choice for those looking for both convenience and coziness. Though unassuming on the outside, its interior is decorated with thoughtfully eclectic design details that resonate in each room as well. We enjoyed a quiet night here after winding down from a day of activity, followed by a carb-filled breakfast in bed to start the day off slowly. Even the shortest of getaways from the city can make all the difference.

Blooming Hill Farm

Our first order of business on this weekend trip was to find food, of course. About a half-hour from Nyack is Blooming Hill Farm, a small but charming market that also includes a café serving both brunch and dinner. We went for the steak and eggs and winter squash pizza to fuel a remaining day of exploring.

Angry Orchard

Along the lines of delicious things, we ventured to Angry Orchard for cider tastings before the season officially ends. The orchard offers free tastings of three different ciders and plenty more to do between food trucks, live music, and games. Despite the rainy weather, we thoroughly enjoyed sipping on our cider by the fire pit while listening to live music.

Storm King Art Center

I have written about Storm King twice before, and now made an annual visit for the past three years - it's safe to say I have a serious love for this place. For detailed recaps you can read my previous posts, but I always love how this sculpture center looks just a bit different each time. Even with some of the same art installations, its environment creates an ever-changing backdrop that is especially stunning in autumn. We spent a leisurely afternoon here strolling Storm King's massive fields, although this was definitely the most crowded I've ever seen it (I blame Master of None season two).

Bear Mountain State Park

After spending more time than expected at Storm King followed by a quick shopping stop at Woodbury Commons, we drove up to Bear Mountain's nearby summit to catch the sunset. If you have enough time I would highly recommend the hike up as well - it offers stunning views of the river and its surrounding environment with moderate difficulty. The park itself has something for everyone, with picnic areas, a lake for summertime boating, and an ice rink for winter skating.

A Girl's Getaway To The Hudson Valley

I often feel like fall is the shortest season, with the warmth quickly turning to a chill and the leaves peaking in color for just a moment before falling. Instead of celebrating Halloweekend this year, my friends and I took a short drive up to the Hudson Valley to catch what may have been the last of this season's best foliage. Between colorful, sweeping views over upstate New York and an overall sense of calm, this was the kind of getaway I'll be sure to revisit each autumn.

We planned our weekend around Minnewaska State Park, where trails of all lengths and difficulty lead to some stunning views. For a productive half-day hike, I recommend this guide for a trail that hits waterfalls and various viewpoints. We also detoured through the Blueberry Run route on our way back, which led us through a more challenging and less-paved trail. This is a great detour for those looking for more adventure, but make sure to leave time before sunset. We ended up hiking through darkness, and it was not exactly the ideal situation (a.k.a. the adrenaline rush was REAL).

Nearby Minnewaska is the small town of Ellenville, where we stayed in the most peaceful little Airbnb rental equipped with both a rowboat and fire pit to use. Despite a rainy second half of the weekend, enjoying the serenity of this lakeside neighborhood was enough to complete our trip. It seemed as if the rain gave more life to the leaves' colors, making for a vibrant drive home. Autumn truly is a beauty.

Green Again

You know you're not a full-time blogger when you finally create a new blog post only to realize you've shot the same exact outfit before. Whoops, my bad. But hey, I would be lying if I said I didn't repeat outfits on the regular, and I guess this is clear evidence.

I didn't want my mom's efforts behind the camera to go to waste and honestly, this is easily one of my favorite outfits for all breezy seasons. The last time I photographed this look it was springtime atop a mountain in Bar Harbor, Maine. This past weekend I unintentionally packed the same outfit for a quiet family visit in autumn, this time trading the sneakers for heeled mules and gold earrings.

An outfit that goes a long way is one worth keeping.

I was going to skip this post entirely but with a seemingly endless summer in New York, a few final warm weather looks still feel somewhat relevant. It's funny to think about how much pressure I used to put on myself to update this blog, when Instagram was still in its early stages of a social media takeover. These days I'm only motivated by certain moments to take blog photos, especially if I'm not traveling. Instagram has made all this content creation too easy - and I say that as both a positive and negative.

But I won't spend much time complaining about the changes and effects of social media - it is what it is. Instead, I'm using this lingering summer heat to share some final memories from the season through these outfits. As much as I am ready for fall, I love that summer always holds some of the best memories.

These photos were taken during two of my favorite kinds of moments - the first on a trip to Austin and the second on an afternoon with friends in the city. They indicate summer ease by way of travel, and at home. Now that it's October the season has definitely overstayed its welcome, but at least it gave me an extra reminder to reflect on the best of it.

Date Night On The Hudson

Getting older means learning the value of time - your own, that of others, and how to manage yours to coincide with others'. My boyfriend and I have been juggling alternate schedules for a while, between attending different colleges and now having opposite working hours. It's a challenge, but certainly not the worst. Ultimately this makes the time we spend together something to look forward to, and we are always conscious not to waste it.

Last week's date night was a dinner sail on the Hudson River with Hudson's at Pier 81, something I don't usually consider as a resident of New York City. These dinner cruises are usually associated with tourist activities, much like Times Square that any non-tourist avoids like the plague. But with the summer air dwindling we took the opportunity to hit the water for the last time this year, and it quickly became the perfect date night.

I swear I wasn't asked to write this blog post - there was just something about this experience that gave me motivation to compile a diary of photos. Between watching the sun set in vivid color and dining as larger parties danced carefree to throwback music, it was nice to experience a side of New York that I often take for granted.

Funny how New York manages to tug at your heartstrings just when you think you've had enough. But I guess that's all part of the madness of this city.

San Antonio, Texas: A Travel Guide

I'll admit San Antonio wasn't initially high on my list of places to visit, but I'm also not one to pass up an opportunity to explore a new city. My dad recently attended a conference in the Alamo City and naturally, my mom and I had to tag along.

As a resident of New York City I think I'm spoiled sometimes. Often the hidden gems of this city (especially Manhattan) are not so hidden, largely because our streets are lined with great spots to eat, experience, or simply stroll by. San Antonio was a reminder that not all cities are like this. There are as many nice spots as there are seedier ones, making the places worth visiting truly hidden gems.

Between its historical landmarks, stunning River Walk, and growing culinary scene, San Antonio is worth a visit if you're looking to explore a lesser traveled city. Just like many other parts of Texas, it has quirks and gems that can't be found anywhere else but the Lone Star State.

WHAT TO DO:

Stroll the iconic River Walk. Other than The Alamo, the River Walk is likely San Antonio's most defining feature. Stretching at 15 miles, the urban waterway is lined with restaurants, shops, and other unique sites in the most elegant way. Its paths are decorated with trees and bridges, making for peaceful walks through the city. Because the River Walk stretches throughout San Antonio, you can easily use it as a detour for most of your destinations. Taking the scenic route is definitely advised here.

Enjoy the art and shops La Villita Historic Arts Village. Towards the southern end of the River Walk sits La Villita, one of San Antonio's first neighborhoods that is now a community destination for shops and galleries. It is a quick visit with character, and while extremely quiet during the day, the area comes alive at night with colorful lights and music.

Tour a piece of history at The Alamo. If there is one thing you must do in San Antonio, it is to visit the Alamo. Even for those who left all knowledge of history behind in high school, this site provides an eye-opening educational experience with little time commitment. I recommend watching the short video in the courtyard to get a brief summary of its historical significance.

Visit at least one Mission. There are four missions included in San Antonio Missions National Park, also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We visited Mission San José, known as the "Queen of the Missions" for its size and beauty. The building's architecture is stunning, making for a lovely stroll and some great photo opportunities, of course.

Stop by El Mercado (Historic Market Square). This honestly was not my favorite spot, but if you have some time to kill it is a fun place to walk through. El Mercado is a plaza filled with Mexican restaurants, shops, and entertainment, adding some liveliness to the quieter city blocks. Perhaps its most popular establishment is the colorful Mi Tierra, where you can choose from a huge assortment of Mexican pastries. I got the sense that the shops were not the most authentic, but hey, the area does provide for some fun photo ops.

Dine all day at The Pearl. The Pearl is one of those places I wish I had scheduled in more time to visit. As a converted brewery it has an industrial feel but now houses a ton of eateries and bars. We stopped by for a quick meal before our flight home, but you can easily spend an afternoon here exploring all the delicious options. It was refreshing to see more people here than I had throughout the entire city as well.

After The Pearl, stroll through the Japanese Tea Gardens. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well-designed San Antonio's Japanese Tea Garden was. The area features a winding stone path through some unique greenery and a koi fish-filled pond. Up in the pagoda you can grab popsicles and bubble tea to refresh from the intense heat while you walk. At no cost and nearby The Pearl, it is definitely worth visiting if even for a few minutes.

WHERE TO EAT:

Pharm Table - They offer healthy food that goes beyond your basic salads. We enjoyed the taco trio, beet noodle salad, and juice flight (to cleanse before all the BBQ, of course).
NOLA Brunch & Beignets - Based on the crowds, this is the most popular brunch in town. If you love the food of New Orleans, you will definitely enjoy a meal here.
La Fonda on Main - I highly recommend this spot for Mexican cuisine! Sit in the adorable backyard and enjoy some ceviche, fish tacos, and empanadas.
Ocho at Hotel Havana - This quiet restaurant was the most beautiful one we visited. Light pours into the blue & white interior as you enjoy Cuban-inspired dishes. Try the plantain pancakes!
La Boulangerie - We were impressed to find that this little café is French-owned, and the food shows. Stop in for a quick but enjoyable breakfast - it is located very close to the Alamo!
Feast - This was by far our favorite restaurant in Texas. They serve an amazing selection of tapas with everything from octopus to okra.
The Smoke Shack - You can't visit Texas without having BBQ, and I'm happy we landed at this lively spot. The brisket is seriously amazing!
Steel City Pops - Customizable popsicles - need I say more?

Bonus Tip:

If you have time, visit Austin (or vice versa). We took a day trip to the nearby city, though it was definitely not enough time. To sum it up in a sentence, Austin is a city alive with energy and of course, weirdness (hence Keep Austin Weird). It is high up on my list as a place to return to!

3 Days In Banff & The Canadian Rockies

It took me longer than usual to write this travel diary, largely because I'm still not sure how to describe a place like this in words. I recently crossed Banff off the top of my travel list, but honestly I feel like I should keep it there as a reminder to return.

The area encompassing the Canadian Rockies is almost surreal, with a natural beauty unmatched by most of the manmade cities I've seen. Between the towering mountains and pristine lakes in seemingly photoshopped shades of blue/green, it is truly one of the most beautiful places I have visited.

We spent a short three days in Banff and its surrounding areas, and while that definitely was not enough, we were fortunate to experience a great deal of its magic. Read on for photos from our trip and a full itinerary, because anyone who hasn't been absolutely needs a trip to this incredible place one day.

DAY ONE

We stayed at the Falcon Crest Lodge in Canmore, a quieter town just 20 minutes outside of downtown Banff. For cheaper accommodations, look here.

Our first day started with a 4 AM wake up call to head to Moraine Lake. I promise I'm not crazy - the parking lots here are completely full by sunrise. Get an early start to enjoy the scenery with some peace and quiet!

This morning was a smoky one for Moraine Lake, but nonetheless stunning. We spent the early morning strolling along the shoreline and soaking in our first sight of these amazing lakes. I recommend climbing the rock pile for overhead views as well. Canoeing on Moraine is about $90 CAD, and while I'm sure the experience is worthwhile, I'll be sharing a better deal later in this post.

Just a 15 minute drive from Moraine Lake is Lake Louise, arguably the most famous site in Banff. For that reason you will likely see more tourists here than anywhere else. Many reviews claim that Lake Louise is overrated because of tourist congestion, but if you focus on the lake itself you'll understand why it is so widely visited. I'm not sure how a place with such sheer beauty can be labeled as overrated.

Nearby the lake is the tiny village of Lake Louise where we grabbed quick sandwiches at Trailhead Café. This might be obvious, but I don't recommend dwelling on your culinary experience in Banff. Save that for the cities. We spent most of our midday meals at small cafés to optimize our time.

After a morning by the lakes we headed out for our first hike at Johnston Canyon. This is a relatively moderate hike with a mix of natural and constructed paths, and of course, amazing scenery.

The initial trail to the lower falls is any easy half-mile that winds between canyons and concludes at a lovely waterfall view. You're able to wait in line to stand behind the waterfall, but there is a hidden alternative if you stay patient and continue towards the upper falls.

The secret to truly experiencing Johnston Canyon is finding the off-trail cave that opens to the incredible view below. I promise, it's real. The steep trail to this cave is located a little more than midway between the lower and upper falls. Look to your right along the path and you'll see an opening leading down - chances are you'll see a few other hikers heading down as well. Here you can also stand behind the small waterfall without the line. We spent so much time in this cave that we didn't even bother seeing the upper falls. This detour was truly the highlight of the hike.

For an early dinner we drove to The Maple Leaf Grill & Lounge in downtown Banff and dined over a slightly over-priced but delicious meal. I don't usually spend time shopping while traveling, but downtown Banff is worth the visit just to stroll the quaint streets that lie between the mountains. The scenery from downtown is unlike what you'll see from any other town or city.

DAY TWO

Another day, another early start. We left Canmore around 6:30 AM to drive 1.5 hours into British Columbia's Yoho National Park. Here we found a much quieter escape and my favorite lake of the trip, Emerald Lake.

As I mentioned earlier, if you make the drive here you'll be rewarded with a cheaper and in my opinion, more beautiful option for canoeing. Rentals from Emerald Lake Lodge are about $60 CAD for a three-person canoe. Although Emerald Lake is much quieter than the others, arrive early to secure an immediate rental. I'm typically more of a kayaking person, but any opportunity to be on a lake this magical is worthwhile. The water is truly a shimmering turquoise that sits against a backdrop of sweeping mountains. The entire experience is unlike any other.

After returning our canoe we strolled along the shoreline trail, where purple wildflowers add some bright color to the path. Naturally we had to stop for a photoshoot. At this time we also caught a glimpse of the eclipse despite having very low visibility in Canada. It was a special moment to say the least.

Just five minutes outside of Emerald Lake is the tiny town of Field - blink, and you'll miss it. The town has a population of just 170 people, but for such a small area it has some great food options. We stopped at The Siding Café for the healthy bowls below. Surprisingly this was one of my favorite meals of the trip.

For the afternoon we returned to Lake Louise to take on the short but steep Fairview Lookout Hike. In just twenty minutes you reach a small lookout with a stunning overhead view of the lake and adjacent Fairmont hotel. It is a low commitment hike with high reward.

We concluded our day by venturing around Canmore, a lesser explored area compared to neighboring Banff. If you have time to make the drive, the roads to Grassi Lakes are extremely rocky but well worth the experience. You will likely run into wild goats on the way up, which easily became one of my favorite parts of the trip.

After about twenty minutes of a rough drive you'll reach Spray Lakes, a hidden gem that is not widely visited. The most unique part of this area is its mixture of rock and clay along the shore that crumbles at your feet when wet. It was the most unrefined area we visited, which made it all the more beautiful.

If you find yourself dining in Canmore I highly recommend Tapas Restaurant. I always love a good tapas meal and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food here. Finish off your meal with dessert nearby at Old School Bus Ice Cream. It is exactly how it sounds - an old school bus repurposed into an adorable ice cream shack.

DAY THREE

Our final day in Banff was a quick one, but we made the most of our time before flying out. As a break from hiking we took the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain, where constructed paths lead you around the summit for mountain-range views. If you have time to spare, there are also hiking trails leading to the summit. Either way, it is a gorgeous visit.

We had intended to make a quick stop at Lake Minnewanka before our downtown lunch but ultimately cancelled the reservation to picnic in the area instead. I'm pretty confident that was the right decision - just look at those views. I'm not sure I could ever get tired of these shimmering lakes.

Needless to say, this was my favorite trip of the year so far. There is something humbling about experiencing nature at its finest. It has a a way of putting your personal life into perspective and sparking an appreciation for the planet we live on. If this place is not already on your list, I suggest adding it now. I don't think it will be long before I go back myself.

My NYC Bedroom, Part One: Cozy Quarters

Effortless Summer: Day to Night

The summer heat has its way of energizing and tiring you all at the same time. I'm still in disbelief that we're finishing up the first week of August, and like most other summers, this one seems to be passing by too quickly.

With all this summertime adventuring I've found that my wardrobe has taken a back seat and likely won't see any major upgrade until layering season is back in session. So for now you'll find me venturing around the city and beyond in the clothes that will take me wherever the days bring, from morning to night.

My schedule regularly involves hopping from my full-time job to events and dinners around the city -- and for the sake of convenience I prefer to dress appropriately for everything, all at once. This breezy black dress couldn't have been more ideal for last week's outings. An easy footwear swap took me from my office to Superdry's Brooklyn rooftop party without annoying bags or awkward bathroom outfit changes. It is really the only summer wardrobe update I need -- easy, comfortable, and ready for anything.

Same City, New Chapter

If you follow me on Instagram you'll know I spent this past weekend moving into a new apartment after two years of living in New York's Upper West Side. Needless to say my arms feel like they've been through a week of rowing class, though I owe a ton of gratitude to my family for helping me through the process. Despite sweating all through the weekend we made time to celebrate my parents' 25th anniversary with a dinner in the neighborhood of my very first apartment, East Village.

Living in a city like New York is truly an unending adventure. One minute you're lugging your bed down four flights of a pre-war walk-up, and the next you're slipping into your Sunday best for dinner and cocktails. There is no time to waste here, and while this lifestyle takes a toll on my energy, I am also fueled by it.

So here's to a another chapter in the city that continuously keeps me on my feet. It's been a year with a great deal of newness between my career and home, and I'm sure it does not stop there. In the meantime I'll be preparing my new space for a visual room tour -- stay tuned!

Made For Summer

There is a level of energy that only the summertime seems to foster. People are out from morning to night, making the most of every minute of the season. Here in New York City, crowds quickly form both on and off these streets, with people either exploring local spots or escaping to less urban scenes. Either way, this is the season of activity, and I'm definitely not ready for it to be halfway over.

When it comes to summer I'm always on my feet. I love a good beach escape as much as an afternoon spent hiking or strolling new neighborhoods. Because of this, comfort is obviously key -- and a versatile pair of sneakers is the best way to get through the summer with style and energy.

These beige adidas Neo Courtsets from Famous Footwear were the latest additions to my closet to finish off my palette of neutral sneakers. Needless to say I already have a ton of outfits in mind to pair them with. The best wardrobe items are those that are ready for any occasion, and it's safe to say these shoes were made for all the summertime adventures still to come.

Views of Napa Valley

A trip to Northern California is incomplete without a stop in the infamous Napa Valley. Though our long weekend in San Francisco was brief, we made sure to schedule in a day trip to wine country with Tower Tours. Aside from the obviously amazing wine, this area is worth the visit for its sheer beauty. With sweeping vineyard views and not a high-rise in sight, the Napa Valley is the perfect destination for a serene getaway. On this tour we visited three lovely wineries, all of which I'm sharing below (as promised in my last post).

Madonna Estate

Our first stop was to Madonna Estate, a small winery run through several generations by the Bartolucci family. We were initially taken into the cellar to learn tasting etiquette before heading out to the vineyards to enjoy some glasses. To no surprise, the rosé was my favorite.

Sutter Home Winery

Sutter Home is no stranger to grocery and liquor stores around the country, so it was a nice stop on this tour to experience the wine behind-the-scenes. The winery is situated along with a lovely garden for a pleasant tasting experience. Shortly after this tour we stopped by Sonoma Plaza for lunch -- I highly recommend spending more time in this area if you have time, as there is a variety of unique shops and restaurants.

Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards

This was by far my favorite visit on the tour, largely for the classically stunning vineyard views. As a vineyard focusing on champagnes, Gloria Ferrer offers a wonderful experience between refreshing tastings and a gorgeous setting. If I do return to Napa Valley (and I'm sure I will), I will absolutely be visiting more vineyards like this one.

4 Days in San Francisco: A Travel Guide

It's been a long time coming, but this girl finally made her way to the Golden State of California. My cousins and I spent July 4th weekend in San Francisco, a city of rolling hills, a melting pot of cultures, and countless landmarks. I've been anxiously waiting to visit California for years now and always assumed San Francisco would be first on the list. Its diversity in all aspects gives the city a vibrancy similar to that of New York, but with a clearly more relaxed West Coast vibe. Any walk through its streets is no easy feat, but the experiences along the way are incomparable.

For my fellow first-time visitors, or anyone looking for that classic San Francisco experience, this post highlights the full itinerary from our long weekend. Be sure to stay to the end as I've recapped all our food choices together -- the most important part, of course. California, I hope to see you again soon!

DAY ONE:

Fillmore Street - For shopping, dining, and on this weekend, live concerts/food trucks.
Pacific Heights - The best neighborhood to admire SF's most beautiful (and expensive) homes.
Lyon Street Steps - An artistic site providing gorgeous views over the city (+ some exercise).
Palace Of Fine Arts - A beautiful historical structure providing a quintessential SF photo op.
16th Avenue Tiled Steps - Worth the drive for an impressive neighborhood project of mosaics.

DAY TWO:

Napa Valley Wine Tour

DAY THREE:

Alamo Square + The Painted Ladies - Full House, anyone? The opening sequence, that is.
The (Actual) Full House Residence - 1709 Broderick St., a 20-min walk from Alamo Square
Presidio + Chrissy Field - Admire the Golden Gate Bridge and explore its surrounding beaches.
The Mission - Clarion Alley Street Art, Dolores Park, and the best Mexican food in town.

DAY FOUR:

Pier 39 + Fisherman's Wharf - Likely the most tourist-driven area, but worth the seaside stroll.
Chinatown - One of the first and largest in the country. Visit for authentic food and shops.
Land's End + The Labyrinth - A unique coastal park with trails and views to last an afternoon.

FOOD:

Ice Cream - Bi-Rite Creamery (a must), Salt & Straw, Smitten
Sweets + Coffee - Mr. Holmes Bakehouse (the classic), Café Réveille, Philz Coffee
Mission Beach Cafe - A classic Californian brunch menu, but be prepared to stand in line.
Jane - The popular Fillmore St. location was closed, but its nearby bakery was a nice alternative.
Elephant Sushi - Three words: Himalayan Salt Trout. Although all the fish is extremely fresh.
El Farolito - The famous La Taqueria was closed, but I'd highly recommend this alternative.
El Techo - Brave the wait! This rooftop setting offers delicious Latin American food + cocktails.
Dragon Beaux - Dim Sum with a twist. Do not miss the Five Guys Xiao Long Bao!

EXTRA TIPS:

Bring layers. San Francisco barely has year-round seasons, though sometimes it feels like every season is compacted into one day. Especially at this time of year, chilly mornings can lead to sweaty afternoons if you aren't prepared. Always carry a light jacket or sweater if you plan on being out all day. You will not regret it.

Save your money. It is no mystery that San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in America. I felt my bank account burning, and I'm from New York. Before you go, take the time to consciously save some money to avoid feeling drained of your funds. Thankfully getting around the city is relatively cheap -- Uber/Lyft rides are very reasonable, and walking is obviously free of charge and amazing exercise.

Prepare for lines. As in any major city, the most popular spots can have quite hefty lines. Almost every restaurant and ice cream shop I mentioned above had at least a 20-min wait when we arrived, so plan accordingly. Fortunately I can say that every single wait was worth it.

Gingham, Two Ways

At this point there is no question that gingham is the print of the season. It seems as if you can't walk into a store without seeing it hanging on multiple racks, and I'm not complaining. Despite the print taking over this year's trends, it still feels classic enough to wear at any time, in any place.

With the start of summer I shamelessly went on a slight gingham binge, adding everything from a mini skirt to a neck scarf in the playful print to my cart. Today I'm sharing two ways I've worn the trend recently for both work and weekend. For anyone else with a surplus of black and white in your wardrobe, styling this print is a no-brainer. I personally love that it can be paired to match almost anyone's personal style, whether simple or quirky. Next I may have to venture into some color variations..

One Day in Fire Island, New York

The summer heat has officially hit New York, bringing a welcome to the long-awaited beach season. Growing up a Jersey girl I've only been familiar with its infamous shores, but this past weekend my friends and I ventured out to Long Island's Fire Island for the first time.

Despite the two-hour journey of trains, a shuttle, and ferry, I would return to Fire Island in a heartbeat. As an island completely without cars, it truly feels like an escape from the city. We spent the day in Ocean Beach, known as the "cosmopolitan" center of the island. We drank frosé by the seaside and lounged at ease under the sun, making for a perfect start to this New York summer.

Getting To Fire Island:

For my fellow New Yorkers, the journey to Fire Island takes a bit of planning. From Penn Station, purchase a getaway pass from the ticket machines and select your desired area on the island. A LIRR train to Bay Shore (with a transfer in Jamaica) followed by a short shuttle ride will take you to the ferry terminal for your final transfer to the island. Thirty minutes later, you'll find yourself on the shores of Fire Island.

What We Ate:

Ocean Beach in particular has no shortage of food options. We grabbed a seaside lunch at Maguire's Bayfront Restaurant, which also happened to be serving frosé as the cocktail special. Sounds like the quintessential beach day lunch, am I right? The meal wasn't cheap, but hey, nothing really is around New York. For not having checked reviews first, I'd say it was a very enjoyable meal. Be sure to grab a seat on the patio as well.

No meal is complete without dessert, so we grabbed a quick ice cream from Scoops further into town. Is there really a more perfect beach day treat?

As is the nature of most beach towns, there is no pressure to fill the day with activities in Fire Island. After finishing lunch we headed straight to the beach to work on our tans, with a short stop at the oceanview playground for swing photos (of course). Even as the island's most popular area, Ocean Beach is relatively quiet and allows for ultimate relaxation on the sand. Between the beautiful weather and perfect company, this first beach trip of the season was undoubtedly a success.

Lower East Side

Just another evening of doing what one does when arriving early to dinner... taking photos against random apartment buildings, of course. Just around the corner from our hotpot dinner was this corner that quietly served as the perfect backdrop for some outfit photos. Despite needing frequent breaks from the city, there is no other place teeming with as much character at every step.

New York's Lower East Side is has this imperfectly cool vibe that lets you breathe when the madness of Manhattan starts taking over. It feels darker and more unrefined than its neighboring areas while still holding some of the best spots in the city, making it a reminder that imperfection builds character. Maybe I'm just using that as an excuse for my realization that our Lyft ride left seatbelt marks on my top (oops). Or maybe it's totally okay to have a wrinkled gash down my top while walking the streets of a neighborhood that still carries New York's authentic grit. I'll go with the latter.
