Now That's What I Call a Great Relationship

It's easy to underestimate the importance of relationships in business. If we get things right the potential is there to be pleasantly surprised by what people will do for us. However, by the time we realise we've got things wrong, it can be too late and opportunities may have already been squandered.

Creating promotion opportunities through internal networks

I recently mentored a young credit analyst from one of the City's major investment banks. She wanted guidance on how to build and develop a network that would help her make progress in her career.

Among her challenges are building the right relationships with her peers and with her immediate boss so that she could count on their support while avoiding the negative aspects of office politics. She also needs to understand how to develop a network in other areas of the bank so that people would think about her if opportunities came up in their teams.

A couple of weeks ago an article in Bloomberg Businessweek asked how business cards survive in the 'Age of LinkedIn'. The article's author, Roger Bennett, quoted Mo Koyfman of Spark Capital describing business cards as 'so horse-and-carriage'.

Interview on the Power of Networks for The Independent

I was interviewed recently by Marianne Abib-Pech for her column in The Independent. The interview appeared yesterday. In it Marianne discusses my thoughts about the value to young entrepreneurs of building strong networks and have a strategy to do so.

You can read the interview here.

Is 'Sweatworking' really the way forward?

You know something is becoming popular when more and more variations come up, trying to fit it in with other common every day activities. If that's the case, perhaps networking is on the verge of enjoying its moment in the sun.

First we had 'Speed Networking', a rapid-fire series of networking 1-2-1s based on the speed dating concept that became incredibly popular a few years ago.

The Impact of Individual Growth on the Business Community

It's easy to lose sight of the impact that personal development can have beyond the individual concerned.

On Tuesday I delivered a talk to the staff of the West of Sweden Chamber of Commerce in Gothenburg. After the talk I spoke at length with Per Jernow. For the last 10 years Per has been working with the Chamber to bring together senior directors of regional businesses to learn from and support each other.

The Power of Networks to Find a New Job

With forecasts of the UK’s economic prospects for 2012 remaining gloomy, the chances are that many more people will be seeking new employment over the course of this year. With more well-qualified people seeking fewer jobs, strong networks will become ever-more relevant, as will a proactive approach.
