The Power of Networks to Find a New Job

With forecasts of the UK’s economic prospects for 2012 remaining gloomy, the chances are that many more people will be seeking new employment over the course of this year. With more well-qualified people seeking fewer jobs, strong networks will become ever-more relevant, as will a proactive approach.

Do the British have a particularly negative perception of networking?

I have written about cultural differences when networking overseas in the past and come to the conclusion that there are actually very few areas in which one country can be distinguished from another when networking. This week though, I saw a big difference for the first time.

Is a LinkedIn profile likely to cost you your job?

Yesterday's Daily Telegraph reported the case of John Flexman who has taken his employer to a tribunal for constructive dismissal. According to the report, Mr Flexman was disciplined for 'inappropriate use of social media' after putting his CV onto LinkedIn and ticking the box saying that he is interested in 'career opportunities'.

Brewing up the right response

Sometimes alcoholic drinks can fuel the right kinds of networking conversations!

Although I often urge people not to open a conversation with a stranger with the question ‘what do you do?’ the chances are that you are going to be asked it at some point in a conversation. How you respond will often dictate the direction the conversation then takes.

When I speak to many organisations about their existing referral strategies, many of them complain that they are giving referrals to Partners but receiving nothing back. Others question whether they should pass referrals in one direction as that company many not be able to reciprocate.

Why referrals should be a key part of your marketing strategy

Many businesses pay lip service to word of mouth marketing (excuse the pun!), relying on their customers to refer them if happy. Few employ a proactive referral generation strategy, despite the quality of lead that referrals deliver.

I discussed the need for a positive referrals strategy in this short video tip:
