What has to be one of the strangest videos using our music to date, I found this fan video on YouTube by TheBardofNC.
He says it's a "piece [he] did for a pacing assignment in TV Production class."

While our song "Just had to let you know" plays in the background he passes the night, drinking, watching tv and of course declares his love for a stuffed animal?

Woman Models Halloween Costumes To Our Music

We love the different ways people use our music for videos.

Here's one that was posted on YouTube over Halloween, and you know what we realized? Our music works great with a pretty girl modeling costumes!

It's by AsahiSasaki she shows off some different Halloween costumes to our song "I Won't Go".

And she did a second one to the song "I'm Doing Fine" with Disney, comics & movie themed costumes.

Hot damn right?!

As you can hear it's changed a little since then.

About a month ago we were contacted on Facebook by Arthur from Germany asking if he could use our music in a movie short he was making. He had found us on Jamendo while looking for creative commons music for the project, a 3D animated short for his diploma thesis.

It's a pretty damn good film! Nice work!

The film is released under the Non-Commercial, Non-Derivative license CC-BY-NC-ND because the song "Balrog Boogie" by Diablo Swing Orchestra was under that license. He asked us if he could use our music under the same, which we of course said yes.

How We Talked Amanda Palmer Into Releasing Under Creative Commons

As you may know, we're fans of sharing music and creative commons and I just wanted to share a story about how I talked someone into doing the same.

The best part about this story is just the simplicity about how it happened. It wasn't a big ordeal it was just a simple conversation I had on twitter with Amanda Palmer. So here's the story...

Ben Folds, Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman, and Damian Kulash released an album recently on bandcamp called Nighty Night under the band name 8in8. The concept was to write and record eight songs in eight hours at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. It was for the Rethink Music conference that took place April 25th - 27th. And they were selling it for $1, with all the proceeds from the first week’s sales going to Berklee City Music. Which I have to say, everything I just wrote about in that paragraph is very cool.

The conference was described as :

a solutions-focused conference, bringing together all sides and viewpoints on the subjects of creativity, commerce, and policy to engage in critical dialogue examining the business and rights challenges facing the music industry in the digital era, and to formulate ideas for the creation and distribution of new music and other creative works.

I watched some of the conference streaming online that day and liked the concept behind it. But I was a bit surprised when I saw the album they released and it was under a regular copyright. I thought from the description of the conference that they were missing an opportunity to showcase the need for artists to use creative commons to represent their art.

So I just briefly posted a message on twitter to @amandapalmer

I was delighted to find that later that day she had responded:

I was kind of confused by this second post but figured she was reading up on it and considdering it.

Then some other people viewing the conversation also asked about this move.

Another was wondering if it would hurt the donation they were asking for if they were allowed to share it:

I responded just by stating how I thought with the spirit of the conference that it should be offered as a medium for being re-mixable and and built upon for other artists. And that if fans wanted to promote it they would know that they were allowed to do this with permission from the artist.

The next day I got a message from the person in the previous conversation letting me know that the album was indeed now released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial License or CC BY-NC

So, in brief, this means that under this artist license you could Remix or adapt the work as long as you attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). And you may not use this work for commercial purposes.

And soon after that people were talking to Amanda about wanting to make videos for the songs and other uses for artistic purposes on her twitter feed.

That's really what I/we think it's all about, using art to make art and to share the things you like freely and openly. So thanks to Amanda for considering it and acting on it. I hope it's a step in the right direction to show artists how to own their own work and let the fans know that they own it too!

We previously posted a live set we did for the Local Love Fest in February. An event where local Madison bands played covers by other Madison bands. It was accompanied with a CD release of some of the songs and sold at the show.

This is the song we recorded for the CD, "H Bomb"* by The Skintones. You can hear the original on their MySpace page.

"Roulette" Nominated For Alternative Song of the Year

The nominations for the Madison Area Music Awards were announced this past weekend and our single "Roulette" was nominated for Alternative song of the year!

If you're a member of the organization or if you'd like to become one head on over to the site and throw a vote our way.

That being said we just wanted to give you some background on what this organization does:

(1) raising public awareness of the need to preserve and support the existence of music education in our public schools and other community institutions,
(2) encourage and promote the advancement of musicians and others in the Madison area by recognizing their musical achievements as well as the achievements of outstanding music students and music educators, and
(3) provide promotional support for the Madison music economy as a whole. MAMA, Inc. seeks to establish three other annual events to further carry out its charitable mission and to keep the awareness of the need for music education in the public eye year-round.

Even if you don't want to vote, consider making a donation to help music education in our public schools.

Lorenzo's Music on Reset Radio in Italy

We've recently been featured on an Italian based internet radio website Reset Radio, along with a great article about the band by the sites owner Marco!

This is what he had to say about our two recently released singles:

"Just Had To Let You Know": features a country guitar mantra and a wave pattern in the verses and breaks out in the chorus. The text is cryptic emphasizing the inability to decide what you really want in life despite everything.
- "Roulette" the song plays with Jimi Hendrix's initial approach and then throws himself on the Modest Mouse preparing an unusual chorus when Tom jumps from right to left just as the ball of the roulette at the casino in the text that is a sad metaphor for the case and that in turn serves to give a name to the 'inability to control our lives.

Are albums really necessary anymore?

I ask this question because we've been recording and mixing tracks for our new release, and sometimes while we're doing that we'll come up with a new idea for another song and end up spending the rest of our night working on that. The problem is, that new idea gets left at just that for the time being --an idea. Mainly because the next time we get together it's back to working on the songs for the album.

Now the other matter is that when we do finish one song for the album it sits and waits as we record, mix and master the next song for the album. And while we work on that... more and more songs wait for this whole process to end so they can all be released together.

One night we we're talking about how we release all of our stuff digitally anyway. So, why do we need to wait to release these songs?

In an internet world we think that indie bands like ourselves do not need to release songs in an old industry standard format. Why not treat the website as a label?

What we've decided to do is, just release our songs as singles on the website as we write them. After we've got a good number of them we might just put them out as a physical release, like a cd or vinyl for a limited run to pay the bills. But there is no reason we shouldn't just be sharing the music we write as we do it. I mean, that's the point right?

So that's our plan. Soon we will be releasing our first single from these songs.

10 Ways To Annoy In Alien Swarm Featuring Lorenzo's Music

We've mentioned before about how the people over a Machinima.com had given us cred as a resource of Creative Commons & royalty free music.

They just posted a new video called 10 Ways To Annoy In Alien Swarm that has some pretty funny common annoyances about things people do while playing the game. Our favorite is the example they point out at 2:15 min into the video. That made us laugh pretty hard.

It's cool to see our stuff being used out in the wild. And thanks to the folks over at machinima.com for not only promoting us as a creative commons music source but using it as well. We would love to see more people use our stuff in new and interesting ways. If you want to, go ahead and lets see what you come up with.
