Tonight is the Season 5 two-hour finale, and we can fully expect huge things to happen. What answers are we going to get? I don’t know and have intentionally avoided as much Lost information as possible this week to avoid even the smallest chance to be spoiled. In the spirit of that, I will not attempt to speculate on what’s going to happen other than posting the official ABC episode description below.

Spoiler Warning

So many questions from last week’s episode, but first, a comment about the photo. I am confident the centricity of tonight’s episode is not going to be solely focused on Ben – but with a title like “Follow The Leader”, I thought a perplexed look on any character’s face would suffice. Much of this season (as in most seasons of Lost) has been about leadership struggles and the moment in which certain characters are required to be leaders. At various times this year, we’ve seen Locke, Sawyer, Richard, Widmore, Faraday and Ben all exert themselves as leaders, whereas the leader from seasons past, Jack, has taken a different approach. That is, up until now - given Faraday’s untimely death, it does look like Jack may see this as his opportunity to find his destiny.

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“Jack and Kate find themselves at odds over the direction to take to save their fellow island survivors, Locke further solidifies his stance as leader of “The Others,” and Sawyer and Juliet come under scrutiny from the Dharma Initiative.”

This looks like an episode that will jump back and forth between the two timeframes from an Island stand point and may not have a central character figure – though there are rumors that we’ll get a heavy dose of Richard Alpert tonight. It will be interesting to see how Daniel’s diary factors into the last few hours of this season and what exactly Jack and Kate are able to achieve with the information he has left behind.

One of our readers, Macgyver, sent in his theory on dying. This is his unedited theory below:

1. If your future self dies in the past your consciousness is sent to your futuret version. Meaning Charlotte’s mind went back to the kid version in the 70’s just as Desmonds would have been merged with his younger self had not Farraday saved him(the Constant). Of course, if you happen to die and the your consciousness reboots itself into your younger version, you remember nothing. (i.e Charlotte’s and Miles’ total lapse of memory, Farraday weeping for 815 with no recollection, the the note Eloise left Farraday..” I love you no matter what you remeber”).

“You do remember birthdays, Richard?”

WIDMORE: Because come tomorrow, you won’t remember I did. Daniel, the real Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on an island–a special island with unique scientific properties. I want to send you to the Island. It will further your research, show you things you’d never dream of. But more importantly, it will heal you, Daniel–your mind, your memory.

2. The Valenzetti Equation predicts the end of the world and true Dharma mission is to change one of the six core values. In the Sri Lanka Video, Alvar Hanso mentions six specific ways that would lead to the end of Humanity, mentioned in order just before he mentions the Numbers in order. 4 corresponds with ‘nuclear fire’, 8 with ‘chemical warfare’, 15 with ‘biological warfare’, 16 with ‘conventional warfare’, 23 with ‘pandemic’, 42 with ‘over-population’. Each of the six dharma stations has a corresponding number/factor to be researched with the hopes of changing. When this is accomplished they are supposed change the numbers broadcasting from the radio tower.

3. FARADAY: “In about four hours, the DHARMA folks at the swan work site–they’re gonna drill into the ground and accidentally tap into a massive pocket of energy. The result of the release of this energy would be catastrophic. So in order to contain it, they’re gonna have to cement the entire area in, like Chernobyl. And this containment–the place they built over it–I believe you called it “the Hatch.” The Swan hatch? Because of this one accident, these people are gonna spend the next 20 years keeping that energy at bay… by pressing a button… a button that your friend Desmond will one day fail to push……”-
The consequence of keeping this energy at bay is a 108 minute time loop. Think of the energy getting exponentially stronger as if the Donkey Wheel was slowly turning on it’s own. Since we can’t allow that….we simply turn the wheel back every 108 minutes. This creates a time loop effect that might have been unintentional, but surely started the whole “We can’t have babies” drama. It is also the reason for the continuing Dharma food drops, as well as the veil keeping any one from finding the islands location. Why do you think the freighter never came until after the swan imploded.

3. Everyone from the future who dies incident has their consciousness sent to there future self with no memory. SO flight 815 is pure coarse correction for all those that died in the incident.(this of course explains how everyone is mysteriously connected before the crash and why the numbers are everywhere)

4. Daniel is the cause of the incident. Jughead vs. island= bad idea. But……Daniel didn’t know that he/815 survivors cause the incident because he died and was sent to his future self with no memory. How his parents didn’t anticipate this while manipulating everyone from distance is unclear(Yet we all know the lengths Ben will take to keep some one out of the loop) Daniel reacts poorly when he discovers the losties in the wrong time. Daniel is again wrong and it WAS their(815ers) destiny to go back. Only so they can AGAIN all die just to go back again on flight 815. The only way to stop the incident/endgame is to keep their stubborn faithless selves on the island like they where supposed to in the first place . Dan did say that they ARE the variables BECAUSE of free will.

5. They should have listened to John

6. IMO, Lost will end with jack waking up the same way he did in the pilot……alone and in the jungle. They will show us Desmond again pressing the button with penny and Charlie there(killing off either of these two is just a gross miscarriage of justice). We will see the 815ers finally bow before their destiny once denied, and accept the hand fate has given them. They20will Choose to stay on the island to save the world. John will FINALLY convince Jack to just ‘believe’…. even when he has no memory of the reasons why. Who knew one tiny suicide note could capture the whole show.

“I wish you had believed”

-Macgyver

ABC’s Official Show Description

Spoiler Alert

“On the 100th episode milestone for the series, the time of reckoning has begun when Daniel Faraday comes clean regarding what he knows about the Island.”

The centricity of this episode will focus on Faraday in the form of a flash back – at this point, scientifically speaking, it would seem that Faraday knows the most about the Island and far much more than he has let on so far. We should get a better understanding of how he ended up in the black-ops DHARMA initiative as well.

With what essentially represents a one week hiatus, tonight we get a Season 5 (and general Lost) recap with The Story of the Oceanic Six. It will be all downhill from here given where the show left off last week – Sawyer’s plan unraveling and the injection of our third mysterious group (“What lies in the shadow of the statue?”), so embrace the hiatus and let’s hope that Season 5 finishes off as strong as it has been up to this point.

When an episode title of Lost references Star Wars, we should obviously expect to be in for a treat. Doc Jensen of Entertainment Weekly posted a good article on this week’s episode and specifically how the title could relate to, yes, Star Wars, but also Norse mythology – worth checking out.

ABC’s Official Show Description

“Suspicions about a possible breach intensify after Ben is taken from the infirmary, and a reluctant Miles is forced to work with Hurley when he’s asked to deliver an important package to a top Dharma official.”

The centricity of this episode looks to focus on Miles – an interesting character since his introduction and one that we know very little about beyond the fact that he can speak to dead people. Perhaps tonight we find out how he came to realize that unique ability and more about him in general. Based on the show description it also looks like Miles and Hurley will be going off-Island for a little 1977 adventure to the main land, which should, at a minimum, provide for some sarcastic humor.

Given the conclusion of last week’s episode (the Locke “I’m back from the dead moment” as Ben wakes up) and the cryptic title of this episode, I cannot help but think of the irony of the situation. If Lost has taught us anything, it would be that dead is not necessarily dead. After last week’s episode we have a better understanding of the circumstances that lead Ben to the Hostiles, and hopefully this week will find out a good bit more about the pyramid, the smoke monster and exactly how Ben loses his innocence.

“To atone for sins of the past, Ben must attempt to summon the smoke monster in order to be judged.”

This is the first episode description I can recall where the smoke monster is actually referenced directly – for that reason alone this is really one of the more important episodes of Season 5. The implications are vast, but I doubt tonight we find out exactly what the smoke monster is, there is still too much time left in the series for that! Based on the preview, it looks like we’ll get some additional story from Ben’s off-Island experiences with the Oceanic 6 – remember how beaten and bruised he was getting on Flight 316 – just how did that happen?

What a cliffhanger from last week – show of hands from everyone who thinks Ben is dead or is going to die (no hands, crickets chirping, etc.)? There are two lines of thought here – one that Sayid did manage to kill Ben as a child and therefore this spins off into an alternate timeline (far-fetched IMO) and then those that think somehow little Ben survives this mishap and goes on to become the evil genius we have grown to know and love. Ultimately, I fall into the camp that subscribes to the latter of those two scenarios, and further believe that these events have already taken place in Ben’s life, but are now just being realized in the life of the survivors of Flight 815 – hence last week’s episode where big Ben cryptically called Sayid a killer, and then ultimately Sayid delivered that line to little Ben when he shot him.

Spoiler Alert

“Kate goes to extreme measures to save Ben’s life when Jack refuses to help. Meanwhile, Kate begins to tell the truth about the lie in order to protect Aaron”

So, based on the show description this looks to be an episode focused around Kate and she is instrumental in saving Ben’s life. Hopefully we’ll find out what she did with Aaron prior to jumping on Flight 316 and quite possibly what Sawyer whispered to her at the end of Season 5 before he jumped out of the helicopter. This should prove to be quite an intense episode with little Ben’s life hanging in the balance!

He’s Our You will be a Sayid-centric episode (about time) and should prove to be quite interesting. With Sawyer in control and “thinking” about what to do next, I do not expect Sayid to wait around too long in his cell for Sawyer to figure it out. I think it’s also safe to say we get more of creepy-kid Ben in this episode as well. The dynamic between Sayid and him should be compelling given the way that Sayid feels about Ben now.

Spoiler Alert

“Things begin to unravel when one of the survivors goes rogue and takes matters into their own hands — risking the lives of everyone on the island”

The dialogue between Jack and Sawyer in last week’s episode spells trouble for a jubilant reconciliation amongst the Oceanic 6 and those left behind, in my opinion. Three years is a long time and the situation has certainly been turned on its head, with Sawyer assuming the leadership role and Jack forced to essentially wait and see what happens next. In my opinion, that is one of the greatest components of Lost as a television series - the reality of the situation is that, in three years, much HAS changed as it relates to the interpersonal relationships within the characters on the show and the group cannot just pick up where things left off.
