Here comes the weather! The morning started out with light offshores and partly cloudy skies (#1). About 10 miles visibility and increasingly cloudy skies set the tone for the rest of the morning. Close to 9am the wind turned and went from almost calm to 5 to 9kts and the sea surface roughed up, finally blowing out. The air temperature was 65.3º and the water's still 72.5º at the buoy and a couple of ticks warmer near shore. High tide was at 7:25am +4.6' and low tide will be at 1:06pm +2.1'. Look for an increasing SSW swell out of 205º. Should be close to 4' and bouncing through the rain...

At 9:30 the front started to pass through (#2) and it's been spitting and actually raining since. Since we're Southern California folk, this passes as a significant weather event. So batten down the hatches, put up the storm windows and head to the basement. Of course we don't HAVE any of those things, so just enjoy the pitter-patter of raindrops on your roof...

How Can We Tell It’s Fall In Southern California

1. You wear log pants until 7:30 and then you put on your shorts.

2. There’s a tree (one tree) in Veteran’s Park whose leaves have turned from green to yellow.

3. The ocean temperature has dropped from 74º to 71º.

4. You start looking for your 3/2 short armed, long legged wetsuit.

5. Halloween candy and decorations have been on the shelves since August. Now Michael’s has Christmas decor in store. (Note: There will still be Halloween stuff even through Christmas for “Scary Christmas.”)

6. Time to look for your beanie and hoody combo.

7. You check to see if Pozole is on the menu at Brothers. (Note: Actually that’s a sign of winter.)

8. People wonder when is Thanksgiving and is it still a holiday??

9. There’s dust on the patio furniture.

10. As of today you can start wearing Ugg boots.

Well we're NOT in Idaho and it's cloudless and 25+ miles visibility. Winds were offshore at checkout and the sea surface is smooth. The air was 64.3º and the water is 72.9º. High tide was at 7:12am +4.3' and low tide will. be at 12:30pm +2.7'. It's a SW swell out of 221º that looks like it's picking up a bit of west. It was 3.9' and a solid 3' dumping on the sand...

Okay, it's that time of year when we raise money for the Surf Team (#2) at Redondo. We're the only team that doesn't get any money from the school and we pay our own way for snacks at the contests, swag and our team dinner at the end of the year (which happened to be at the Palm Springs Wave Pool, because of your generosity!) Today there is a meeting of the California Fish & Game Commission. We often wonder how decisions that affect our oceans and beaches get made and why we seem to have little impact. The fact is that we do have an opportunity to be heard or at least hear how these decisions are being made. Surfers, Fishermen, Indigenous Peoples, Beach Goers, tourists and business people of all stripes have a stake in these proceedings. Also you can gain some appreciation of our own Anupa Asokan and the amazing work she’s been doing on our behalf. Check it out!

It’s a cloudless morning in the South Bay with 18 miles visibility. Winds are light offshore 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is smooth. The air was 61.5º at checkout and the water is 70.7º. High tide is at 11:34am +5.2’ and low tide follows at 7:44pm +0.8’. The SSW swell out of 211º continues at 3.0’ and that’s about it at the Kickoff Classic underway at El Porto…

Our inclusion of Capitan Don Congrejo's Polio Pond (#1) over the last week is mainly due to the fact that it's right in the middle of our view of the beach. You can see that visibility is over 20 miles and the sky is brilliantly cloudless. Winds are light offshore, 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is observably smooth bordering on glassy. The air was a chilly 52.9º this morning and the water is 70.5º. High tide is at 11:05am +5.6' and low tide will be at 6:42pm +0.5'. It's a SSW swell out of 199º at 3.6' and it's breaking right on the beach. Rumor has it that it's a bit better north of Bruce's Beach, but it's just a rumor.

"The Kickoff Classic" returns tomorrow at El Porto. 6:30am to 9:30am for some great prep surfing. If you can't make it in person you can follow the action on "Live Heats." We'll be following it from our perch in Idaho as we check out the changing seasons...

It might be October, but here in the Southland it's still looking a bit like summer to the uninitiated. A cloudless sky with over 20 miles visibility (You can see Catalina in Photo #1.) Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was maybe too smooth. The air temp at checkout was a full 10º lower than yesterday at 56.9º, with the water holding at 71.8º. High tide was at 10:38am +5.9' and low tide will be at 5:53pm +0.2'. It's that persistent SSW swell out of 197º at 3.9', breaking on the sand. If you're searching for waves Marine St. is a good place to start. Topaz actually had a few waves, but pretty close to shore...

"As we emerged from the dense bamboo forest we came upon this Tiki Bar (#2) and noticed how it still appeared to be shrouded in perpetual Spring. We sat on the stoop and were soon invited in by the wizened proprietor. He shot Kincaid through the heart when he ordered a Kombucha. I was stunned, but finished my gin and tonic..."

"Those of us of a certain age grew up expecting that by now we would have Rosie the Robot from 'The Jetsons' in our house. And all we've got is a Roomba." Juan Enriquez

Here (#1) we have Toph, not with Rosie the Robot OR a Roomba. This is Shadia-Elise and she was Paul Roustan's body painting model for the opening of the "Layered Memories" installation at the VEFA Gallery. She is an outstanding performer and really gets into her characters. She was busy posing with the guests and put her arm around Toph for the pic which lead to a couple of conundrums for our boy. One: What does he do with his right hand? Two: Don't press any buttons!

Meanwhile, after yesterday's blow the ocean calmed right down and was glassy and unruffled (#3). Visibility was 10 miles under cloudy skies and there was a bit of rain as cells blew about the firmament. The air was 67.0º and the water didn't dip perceptively staying at 71.8º. High tide was at 10:13am +6.1' and low tide will be at 5:12pm +0.0'. Still a swell out of the SSW (199º) at 4.6' and it was 3' in Hermosa, but right on the sand. Check it out when the tide is further out if you're not sketchy about water quality...

Even though this storm wasn't as violent as some in the past, the wind and Kelvin assisted high tides chewed a way a substantial amount of sand. We thought this view north of the pier (#2) showed how much beach was eroded. Check out how close the Pride Tower is to the surf line. Pretty dramatic!

Here's hoping that you got a chance to see the high tide today and the attending surf! If not we've got a few pics to share!

#1) Ave. C is a low spot on the Avenues and as we got there at 8:38am the water was breaching the bike path. Didn't look like the tower was in any danger, but there was a lot of water moving not only in and out, but laterally as well...

#2) Needless to say Cap'n Donaldo's Polio Pond was brimming with chocolate foam bergs, but the real eye catcher was the amount of erosion that had happened along the high tide line. It was scalloped all the way to the Breakwall and maybe between ten and twenty feet of sand was washed into the surf. Hoping that it settles to create some workable sand bars... The office had some ten to twelve foot faces!

#3) On the way back we stopped at Sapphire to watch the young chargers bounce around on the bounding mane. It doesn't look that big until you see the guy on the inside and it's still head high. Depending on your stature it was head high to double-o. Some of the faces were working, but the inside tested your flexibility!

Here we have Jetski (#1) reporting from Kyoto, Japan. He still remains enthralled and is having the most excellent time. He did make one rookie mistake and that was going to the All-You-Can-Eat Crab buffet. Apparently he was unable to move for several hours which was okay, because he just kept eating... On to Osaka tomorrow...

Weird weather this morning, starting out clear and then having the fog roll through. Winds were on mostly from the south and the sea surface was chopped up. The air temp was 68.7º and the water is 73.9º (still fine for dunking!) High tide was at 8:33am +5.6' and low tide follows at 2:36pm +0.7'. It's primarily a SSW swell out of 202º at 3.6'. In El Porto this morning it was 3' to 4' and a bit ragged, but still good enough to start the Kickoff Classic! They ran the initial 22 Men's Shortboard heats and it should continue next week...

Why is this man (#1), who we know had asthma, smoking a cigar? Okay, it looks really cool. We also know that he was captured by the Bolivian Air force while trying to find some epinephrine to quell his asthma attack. Dammit Ché, bring the revolution to a grinding halt!

Another hot one with over 20 miles visibility and cloudless skies. No wind and smooth sea surface. The air temperature at checkout was 69.8º and the water is 73.6º. High tide was at 8:07am +5.3' and low tide will be at 1:55pm +1.2'. A south swell out of 177º at 4.3' and it was 2' to 3' on the sand.

Kickoff Classic tomorrow morning in El Porto for some amazing prep surfing. Tomorrow features Men's Shortboards.

The Professor finds a candidate for ear-pinning surgery (#2). He travels the world looking for likely subjects and then Super Glues™️ their ears to the sides of their heads. He gives testimonies to the locals telling them of the challenges of growing up with ears that stick out...

A small fortune in sand dollars (#1) awaits the intrepid diver... The Mermaids are famous for their hauls...

Sunny, hot and windless. Visibility 23 miles. Water temperature is 73.6º and felt delightful. High tide is at 7:40am +4.9' and low tide arrives at 1:08pm +1.9'. It's a SSW swell at 2.6' and it was 2' on the sand and wasn't as clear as we'd have hoped...

Regard the mat in (#2). On Saturday last we swam and used it to change. We forgot to put it back in the bus, much to our chagrin. On Monday afternoon we came roaring into the parking lot stopped in our usual place and our mat was right where we left it. We greeted this with some fanfare and immediately bought lottery tickets...

We were looking for something to blame the poor surf on and we thought, "Maybe Mercury (#1) is in retrograde!" Well, it's not and why we thought Mercury would have any effect on the surf smacks of the ridiculous.

Given all of that, it was a beautiful morning and 18 miles visibility with some ambient haze. Winds were light offshore 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was glassy. The air at checkout was a toasty 69.0º and the water is 73.6º. High tide was at 7:12am +4.4' and low tide will be at 12:13pm +2.6'. It's a 2.3' SSW swell out of 206º and it's 1' to 2' on the sand (#2). Predictably clear, if you haven't been taking a dip you're missing a great opportunity to score some warm water and warmer air.

Lots of flowers this morning at Topaz/RCO. A sizable crowd sent Tio Ted off on the South Bay's version of a Viking funeral. The Baywatch sprayed the participants and there were stories galore. If we get some more pics we'll run them later this week, but here we have Ronnie, the Professor and Billy Mac all in roses...

These "Queen of the Night" (#2) only bloom at night to attract the moths which pollinate them. They not only bloom at night, but it's for ONE night. If you snooze, you lose! This one was in full bloom around 9pm...

Not that Danger Boy's run of injuries is in jeopardy, but Doc (#1) is making a credible run for the crown (even though it might be broken at this point.) His first person account is troubling given the fact that he couldn't decide which way was up. Getting smacked up the side of the head will do that to you. Needless to say he figured that out, but was in turns oriented and disoriented. The capable Burnsy, hailed the lifeguard who took his sweet time responding. All his vitals checked out and there was no blood, although he said he couldn't hear out of his left ear. Questionable before the incident. Donnie deftly commented, "You have to choose better waves!"

Meanwhile, Sonny Vardeman (#2) was busy regaling the Lifeguards with his historical (and sometimes hysterical) recollections. Guarding when most of the current crop of life savers weren't born, they were anxious to hear his stories and take pics of him at the station. He got more attention than if Pam Anderson had shown up (at this point he's got better legs)...

11 miles visibility under mostly clear skies. Winds are annoyingly onshore 2 to 4kts. The sea surface is tacked. The air temperature at checkout was 64.9º and the water is 73.4º. These temps aren't going to last so jump in sooner than later... High tide is at 10:25am +6.1' and low tide will be at 5:08pm +0.1'. Unbelievably, the swell is 3.0' out of 160º SSE! How is that possible? It's 2' on the sand and not short or longboard friendly...

Always lots to discuss at Brother'sBurritos. Chris, Anton and Nate (#2) were contemplating Maui, while this morning it was Jodi, Morgan and B$ celebrating life. In turn Jen Capo and Beth dropped by to talk shoes and fashion, while the bikers assessed Eric's condition... Ed said goodbye in there somewhere...

10 miles visibility under overcast skies. Winds wre light on and the sea surface was smooth.

The air temp was 67.6º and the water is a nice 73.0º. High tide was at 9:10am +5.3' and low tide followed at 3:)7pm +0.9'. SSW swell from 205º at 3.0' and it was half that on the beach. Looks like some pulsing locally, but this morning the Breakwall looked like this (#1). Had to get used to seeing the pier from this angle (#2).

We have a SW swell out of 218º at 3.0' and it was 3' and if you were patient you could find some corners.

Short boards were fitting a little better into the tight tubes this morning (#1).

Welcome sports fans to this year's Autumnal Equinox! All things being equal this has started out as a great example of equality. We'll check this evening...

Here (#1) we have an excellent shot of the beach this morning! We have a teeny Professor on the left looking to the max visibility of 15 miles and checking out the buoys way over on the right. You can see those Toy Story clouds looming, but ample sunshine as well. Winds were light first onshore then off. Great for paddling. The air temperature was 65.0º and the water is 73.2º. High tide was at 8:20am +4.3' and low tide will be at 1:27pm +2.4'. It's a SW swell out of 223º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' bouncing on the beach. Thanks to Christian Stutzman for the great photo!

So, we're standing in the crowd watching this rather august group (#1) gather on the balcony at Buckingham Palace and the lady standing next to us said, "Who's that with Boomfwappa and Captain Cheddar?" "Must be some security." we said. "You never can tell what kind of mischief is about these days..."

As they moved about, Boomfwappa and Capt. Cheddar found themselves teetering on the Prime Meridian (#2), with their toes in the west and their heels in the east. Let's hope they took this opportunity to set their watches...

Dane DeLuca and Mary Anne Ayala, whipped up this paella for her End-of-Summer party (#3). Tasty and clam forward as you can see. We're becoming somewhat expert in the area of paella (if we may be so bold) and this one was right up there!

A beautiful morning here in Lotus Land. This sunrise (#1) seemed to need musical accompaniment. 15 miles visibility with offshore winds 3 to 4 kts. The sea surface was smooth. The air temp was 63.0º and the water is a delightful 73.0º. One tide, high at 1:13pm +4.8'. We have a SSW swell out of 194º and it was 2' to 3' and was better before the tide got too high...

Lovely Rita (#2) is shown here relaxing in the shade of her short rib pot pie, with this impressive puff pastry. Doc directed us to the new Martha's in the Riviera Village where the dinner menu isn't overwhelming and has some good choices. Best wishes to Reets!

One of the original "Lost Boys" was Mark "SeaWolf" Hall. He was on some of the early treks to Saladitas and the Ranch. Here he is with his bride to be Melissa (#1). They're going to tie the knot in Troncones and try to get some surf in between the nuptials! Saladitas in February sounds great!

Elder abuse is a little talked about problem and only hits home when it's someone you know. We received this missive this morning (#2) and were shocked and slightly amused. If you have seen this man, please don't hesitate to lead him back to Hermosa. Crossing the city limits would be fine, but to be sure he is okay, take him to Brother's Burritos. He is on numerous medications and alcohol only exacerbates the problem. We're unreasonably confident that he will be returned unscathed by the whole experience, but you never can be sure...

You know how you feel the first time you get a legit noseride, or an in and out tube, or a ride longer than 5 seconds in Hermosa. In photo #1 you can see JuJu (with the purple Barahona) running out of the water to tell Coach Frank that she had gotten a solid hang five and rode it out! She works hard and it's paying off! She'll have a chance to surf against some strong competition in the Kickoff Classic maybe as early as next week!

Cloudy this morning and a few rain drops fell unexpectedly. Winds were offshore at 2 to 3kts and the sea surface had a light ripple. The air temperature was 68.0º and the water is 72.7º. Low tide was at 5:42am +2.6' and high tide was at 12:30pm +5.1'. SSW swell is back out of 197º at 2.6' and that's about what it was with some racers running down the beach...

Coach Avery commissioned some artwork for his new Sci-Fi model. Always containing a tribute to his kids, Kalea and Noah, Coach Frank tried to incorporate their silhouettes spinning out of the void. As he was putting on the final touches, he noticed that his playlist had started playing Hawaiian music which was a chicken skin moment. Aloha to the Avery's!
