Cardale Jones has become one of college football’s most fascinating players in 2015. Rare is the quarterback who gets benched despite going undefeated as a starter, and singular is that same quarterback whose first three career starts were wins in the Big Ten Championship Game, Sugar Bowl and National Championship Game.

Indeed, Jones’ stock had risen so high, so fast after last year’s miracle postseason run that a press conference he called to announce he was staying in Columbus had many convinced he was declaring for the NFL Draft — after just three starts in college — and even further, that he’d be a second or first-round pick.

But after sub-par play this season, Jones has been benched in favor of J.T. Barrett and now faces an uncertain future. Will he stay for his senior year at Ohio State despite likely being a backup, become a graduate transfer like Russell Wilson or go to the NFL draft despite a less-than-stellar 2015 season?

Clearly Jones still has the talent, size and athleticism to thrive at the Power 5 level, and he wouldn’t serve himself well to ride the pine behind Barrett for another year. He could enter the NFL Draft, though that might be ill-advised with his stock lower than it was 10 months ago. His best course of action is likely a transfer to a pro-style offense, where he can play to his strengths and boost his pro stock. Here are the top five landing spots should Jones decide to enroll elsewhere.

5. Virginia Tech

Blacksburg isn’t too far from Jones’ home in Akron, which should ease the blow of leaving Ohio a bit. Current Hokies QB Brenden Motley doesn’t seem like the long-term solution, especially after Frank Beamer retires. Whoever comes in will likely want to bring in his own upgrade and Jones could be that guy. It all depends on who Virginia Tech hires and what kind of offense he brings, but VT is clearly in need of an offensive revitalization as its new era begins.

View image | gettyimages.com

4. Georgia

There could be a new head coach in Athens next season, which would likely mean a new quarterback. Even if Richt does stick around, it would be hard for him to justify going forward with Greyson Lambert, Brice Ramsey or Faton Bauta considering how this season has played out. There are worse options than playing at a power program in the SEC and sharing a backfield with star running back Nick Chubb.

View image | gettyimages.com

3. Auburn

Sean White and Jeremy Johnson have both been wildly ineffective this season, leaving Auburn and its quarterback situation a mess. Jones would be playing under a head coach, Gus Malzahn, who was Cam Newton’s offensive coordinator and QB coach. Of course, many felt Johnson would become the next Newton because of his size and he proved to be nothing more than a low-level proxy. Jones is not a runner like Newton, but learning from the coach who helped groom one of the NFL’s best young QBs is surely enticing.

View image | gettyimages.com

2. LSU

Les Miles is under fire in Baton Rouge and the key problem with the Tigers, as it has been for many seasons in recent memory, is a lack of quality QB play. Jones would give LSU a competent, pro-style QB to pair with RB Leonard Fournette, giving it the multi-dimensional offense it needs to get over the hump in the SEC West and become a national championship contender again.

View image | gettyimages.com

1. Wherever Tom Herman lands

Perhaps the most impactful discrepancy between this season and last is Tom Herman. Jones’ former offensive coordinator is currently working wonders as the head coach for 10-0 Houston and is a strong candidate to find himself at a reputable Power 5 program next season. Wherever he lands, a reunion between Herman and Jones would suit both extremely well. In Herman, Jones has a familiar mentor under which to thrive. In Jones, Herman has a potential star under center, giving his new regime an immediate boost. South Carolina would be ideal, but this relationship is mutually beneficial regardless of area code.

Nick Saban didn’t experience much success in his first four seasons at Michigan State (25-22-1), but notched one of the greatest upsets in recent Big Ten history in 1998.

His unranked, 4-4 Spartans were four-touchdown underdogs when they traveled to Columbus to take on the undefeated Buckeyes.

But Michigan State hung tight and was clinging to a 28-24 lead with less than 90 seconds left. The game came down to a 4th-and-10 for Ohio State at Michigan State’s 15-yard-line, where the Spartans’ Renaldo Hill picked off QB Joe Germaine in the end zone to seal the massive upset.

Michigan State will once more try to spoil Ohio State’s undefeated season with an upset at the Horseshoe this Saturday.

Fall (6 PTS, 7 REB, 4 BLK) might have won the individual matchup over Ndiaye (5 PTS, 2 REB, 0 BLK), but UC Irvine just barely prevailed, 61-60.

Tom Crean’s daughter, Megan, caught the brunt of a pretty cruel April Fool’s Day joke from one of her professors.

In a recent feature of Crean from CBS’ Gary Parrish, Crean’s wife Joani tells a story about Megan being in a class at IU in which her professor told the students on April 1st that Crean was fired. The students cheered before the professor revealed it was an April Fool’s joke.

“Megan is remarkable,” Joani said before telling a story that … well, man, listen to this story.

“One of her professors, on April 1, announced to the class that Tom Crean got fired,” Joani said. “He said ‘Tom Crean was fired this morning.’ And Megan was sitting in the class. And people cheered. And then the professor said … ‘April Fools!'”

That is just savage.

Just a tip to professors at Indiana: Double check the roster and make sure Tom Crean’s daughter isn’t in your class before your next April Fool’s joke.

Class of 2016 No. 1 overall recruit Vince Howard (Dillon, TX) appeared on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Wednesday and announced his commitment to Michigan State. It was something of a surprise choice for the QB, who, based on the writing on the wall, appeared to be Austin-bound.

Even more perplexing, Howard misidentified his future coach, Mark Dantonio, as “D’Antoni”, which should get his tenure in East Lansing off to a rocky start (to say nothing of how Dantonio was able to recruit him out of state despite Howard not knowing his name). That might speak less about Dantonio’s interesting recruiting skills than it does about a young man getting flustered in the spotlight for the first time.

Before analyzing Howard’s decision, let’s re-visit the young man’s compelling story. Howard did not play football until he was a sophomore, frequently getting into trouble with the law, when an infamous school board shake-up re-opened the dilapidated East Dillon High School. State championship-winning coach Eric Taylor was strong-armed from his post at Dillon High School in favor of Wade Aikman (who was frosh phenom QB J.D. McCoy’s longtime coach) and took the East Dillon job, where he faced a severe lack of money and resources.

A legendary high school coach famous for his ability to connect with players on a personal level, Taylor took Howard under his wing and worked magic in East Dillon. The tandem won a state championship in their second year despite Howard continuing to face off-the-field issues. Howard’s mother was a recovering substance abuser and his estranged father, just out of prison, constantly clashed with Taylor during the recruiting process.

After the state title, the high schools merged back together and Howard has been guiding the Dillon “superteam.”

View image | gettyimages.com

The next chapter of Howard’s story was going to continue at either Michigan State, Texas and Michigan. The Wolverines weren’t a player until Jim Harbaugh came to town, capitalizing on a Texas recruit’s interest in his state and successfully courting him to the point where Michigan cracked his top three. Howard’s interest in the state of Michigan was stoked by Dantonio, who reportedly had a visit with Howard in which he profoundly spoke about how Howard’s story of picking himself up by his bootstraps resonated with the state of Michigan.

I’m not really sure Sparty was the ideal choice for Howard. The team’s ball-control, run-first offense has been more amenable to pro-style QB’s in the recent past — Connor Cook, Kirk Cousins, Nick Foles (who never played for, but originally attended MSU), Brian Hoyer — to name a few. Howard is faster on his feet than all of them and isn’t as polished a passer. Also, you worry about him getting home sick with his mom still in a perilous position back at home.

But maybe this falls on Charlie Strong, who after watching Kyler Murray take his talents to College Station last season, has now let another sterling in-state QB recruit slip through his fingers. There was almost no reason for Howard to leave Texas, yet somehow he did. Now Strong is left again with QB Jerrod Heard, who — after playing so well against Cal earlier this season in his first start — has struggled mightily in several games since.

Howard has been compared to former Texas legend Vince Young for years and was expected to be the player to turn Texas’ program around under Strong like Teddy Bridgewater did for him at Louisville. But now that Howard is headed North, you have to wonder if this could be the last straw for Strong at Texas and whether Strong will take his talents to South Beach for the Miami job instead of being on the hottest seat in the nation next fall in Austin.

It’s also curious whether Howard’s last-minute interest in Michigan was serious or just a red herring and something he used to create some tension with Harbaugh, knowing he’d be heading to a rival school. Notice how Howard juked towards Michigan at his announcement before picking Michigan State. If that isn’t gamesmanship, what is?

All we know is, we wouldn’t have wanted to be in the room with Harbaugh when it happened.

Former Boston College QB Doug Flutie penned a heartfelt note on Facebook on Wednesday, announcing that his parents Dick and Joan died within one our apart from each other earlier in the day.

According to Flutie, his father, Dick, was ill and died of a heart attack in the hospital and his mother, Joan, had a sudden heart attack and died less than an hour later.

They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it. I would like to honor my parents for all that they did throughout my and my brothers’ and sister’s lives. My parents were always there for their children, from the days my Dad coached us as kids and my Mom would work the concession stands, through to this morning. The most important part of their 56 years of marriage was providing opportunities to their children. They were incredible parents and Grandparents and my family and I will miss them both. On behalf of me and the entire Flutie family, I would like to thank you all for your well wishes and prayers during this difficult time.

We can’t imagine what Flutie is going through, and send our condolences.

TCU head coach Gary Patterson is much like his contemporaries: passionate, full of idiosyncrasies and just quirky enough to manage a group of 100 college-aged He-Men without teetering over the edge to insanity. High-level college football coaches are unique beasts who require a peculiar skill-set, which makes them unlike most people on this planet, for good and ill. Patterson fits that mold, except he’s not exactly one-of-a-kind, at least as far as fictional characters are also concerned.

Many have already pointed it out, but Patterson bears more than a passing resemblance to Matt Foley, Chris Farley’s iconic “Saturday Night Live” character. The motivational speaker who lives in a van down by the river not only looks a little bit like Patterson, but their mannerisms, voice and personality share a few key qualities. Here are six reasons why Patterson is the real-life Matt Foley.

1. Both impart wisdom on America’s youth

Being a good motivational speaker is a prerequisite for any head college football coach and it’s a part of the job Patterson knocks out of the park. His rhetoric has been known to inspire his players, which results have reflected. According to the Texas Speakers Bureau, the going rate for a Patterson engagement is $17,500-$20,000. It’s unclear how that shakes out relative to other speakers, but that’s a pretty penny. Likewise, Foley is known for his motivational speeches, even if they don’t have the desired effect.

2. Their voices know just one level: SCREAMING

Like most Farley characters, Foley had just one volume: loud. Very, very loud. The bombastic Foley hit Farley’s sweet spot and became one of his most iconic characters precisely because Farley could just yell his way to laughs and more laughs. Patterson can tone it down when he has to, but he rarely has to. And as a result, he also has one volume: loud. We’d say his bark is much worse than his bite, but Patterson doesn’t even have a bite because he’s too busy barking.

3. As a result, their voices are always hoarse

By the end of a sketch, Farley was typically so spent from yelling and expending every last ounce of energy that Matt Foley was debilitatingly hoarse. Have you ever watched a Gary Patterson post-game interview? It’s a struggle to understand anything he says, as he has just spent the last three hours yelling his face off.

4. Their sense of style is suspect

Patterson isn’t exactly the most sharply dressed coach in college football. His usual get-up consists of a visor, black shirt, khaki pants and tennis shoes. That’s nothing too egregious, but it’s not like the guy is getting a GQ spread any time soon like Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury. Foley’s fashion sense also lacks: plaid jacket, green tie, beige slacks, thick-frame glasses. It’s not the most impressive look.

View image | gettyimages.com

5. Both are in constant need of a towel & water

Neither Foley nor Patterson are gaunt. They each pack some pounds, which — combined with their vigor — is a potent recipe for sweat and the need for water. Patterson is known to have someone responsible for keeping him dry and hydrated, something Foley could have used if he could afford it.

6. The need to constantly jack up their pants

Matt Foley’s signature move is jacking up his pants. Many impressionists have leaned on, tried, and typically failed at doing what Farley did so well, which is reach under his gut and make sure his pants are fastened tight. It’s just a shame Patterson has never tried attempting a Foley impression because he’d knock it out of the park the way he too jacks his pants up every spare second he gets.

Bowling Green wide receiver Gehrig Dieter had the catch of the year Tuesday night. Then he did it again.

#MACtion was in full force as Dieter made two unbelievable one-handed touchdown grabs against Toledo. This one from the first half was originally ruled incomplete, but was rightfully reversed:

This touchdown from the second half, which probably left the NFL scratching its head, was just as impressive:

Alas, Toledo still won comfortably, 44-28.

The Harvard marching band went viral this weekend for appearing to spell “penis” during its show for the Harvard-Penn matchup, but they say we got it all wrong.

Band manager Paul Meosky told the Boston Globe, “We meant to spell ‘Pen ’15’ with both a space and an apostrophe before the number … Our last formation spelled Pen ’15. The formation may have appeared indistinct due to lower attendance than expected, however, we believe it still clearly spells Pen ’15, as we intended.”

This certainly seems like a tongue-in-cheek response, as it is even lamer than the Starship Enterprise/Jayhawk excuse.

Just own it, Harvard!

Kentucky forward Alex Poythress accidentally found a new way to floss on Tuesday night, and it looked extremely painful.

The senior got his teeth caught in the net while following through on an alley-oop slam dunk against Duke.

When thinking about the ways a dunk can go wrong, it usually involves landing awkwardly and/or crashing to the floor. Thanks to Poythress, basketball players everywhere will now remember to keep their mouths closed mid-dunk.

Poythress finished with nine points and seven boards en route to a 74-63 Kentucky win.

Waffle House has announced its third “Waffle Wager,” which rides this year on Clemson-South Carolina. A Waffle House in either Clemson or Columbia will give away free waffles, hashbrowns and coffee to fans of the winning team.
This Oklahoma fan probably had a heck of a time on Saturday night as the Sooners defeated Baylor. At least, it must have been better than the night before.

Said fan, 35-year-old Harold Anthony Schroeder, spent Friday night sleeping in the McLennan County Courthouse, believing it to be the Hilton. From the Waco Tribune:

Deputies responding to a burglar alarm at the courthouse about 8:15 a.m. Saturday found Harold Anthony Schroeder, 35, of Oklahoma City, curled up between the counsel rail and the first-row seats in the 54th State District Courtroom.

Wearing a crimson Oklahoma Sooners shirt, a groggy Schroeder sat on a bench in the courthouse rotunda and tried to explain to deputies that he thought he was at the Hilton.

Deputies noted in reports that Schroeder smelled strongly of alcohol.

Schroeder was arrested on a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge and was released Saturday afternoon after posting $1,000 bond.

Investigators don’t exactly know how Schroeder entered, but think he might have broken through a door that wasn’t properly locked. Schroeder “told deputies he didn’t know how he ended up in a third-floor courtroom,” which sounds about right.
