We are proud to announce that we will be embarking upon a Lost Sound Tapes 7" subscription series! The bands participating are: Charlie Mcalister, Sandy City, Tyson Ballew, Math The Band, weakness, and Stephen Steinbrink. Each 7" will be limited to 50 copies and subscribers will receive one 7" a month for 6 months. The series will be $60 including shipping in the US, available by subscription only. Seattle locals can get a discount by doing pick up in-person. International price will be calculated soon.

PRE-ORDERS for the subscription series will be available starting this November. The series will officially start January 2011. All 7"s are guaranteed to ship on time! We have put in the proper planning in order to ensure that this series will go smoothly and not leave people waiting around. In fact I have 5 of the 6 recordings in my hands right now.

After the series has been completed, Lost Sound Tapes will release the content from all 6 records on a compilation tape in an edition of about 250 and they will only be $5. Estimated time of tape completion is to be determined and cannot be guaranteed.

Dylan McKeever writes magical pop songs with 60's swagger that are full of soul. His 'The Penguin League' topped many 2006 year end album lists. 'Constellations' has expanded upon the ideas of the first album while adding more male/female harmonies, tender ukulele ballads, and head first exuberance. Dylan is also a member of the band James Rabbit, whom Lost Sound Tapes has previously released on cassette, and receives some assistance from them on the album 'Constellations'.

LST-23 - Pangea "Pangea" Cassette $5.00

11 tracks of wild, catchy, pop punk like only Pangea can do and they can do no wrong. The last song on the album even utilizes auto-tuned vocals, what?! They've transformed over the last couple years from playing soulful folk pop songs to blistering, charlie brown punk songs. This description sucks, this tape DOES NOT SUCK.

Okay, so anyways, Pangea are from the greater Los Angeles area and are part of the Griznar music collective which includes great bands like Roschtoshvana and God Equals Genocide. Inspired by bay area pop punk bands, these songs will make you want to dance like an electrocuted squirrel.

Now for those who want some personal information, read on:
I, Jonathan Manning, am going back to school full time at the end of September. I got into the commercial photography program at Seattle Central and I'm very excited about it. This past fall was the first time I have had any formal schooling since 2004 and that was just a couple classes. From what I hear, it's a fantastic program and faculty but it's incredibly time consuming. 12 hour days every day, lots of equipment to purchase, etc. So I'm not entirely sure how much time/money I will be able to devote to tape and record making for the next two years. By no means will we be closing up shop, but we may be operating at limited capacity and have a slower rate of new releases while I'm getting the hang of a new schedule and program. Thanks for caring enough to read this section of the blog post, I really appreciate your support!

LST BANDS: Blanket Truth has a website

The band Blanket Truth has a new website!

You should check it out. It only took 5+ years to decide to make one, but now here we have it. They have decided to make all of their albums available for free download, so take a look around.

For some reason Blanket Truth has a soft spot for having two completely different versions of a release: Blanket Truth "Indoor Camping" CD version is a digital 8-track recording with a full band and Blanket Truth "Indoor Camping" tape version is a solo boombox recording.

There's also the split with Watercolor Paintings which has two versions, titled "Lo-Fi For Life" and "Lo-Fi Sellouts". The former are lo-fi cassette recordings while the latter are digital recordings done at a college radio station, both versions have completely different track listings.

At the moment, the only Blanket Truth music we have for sale in the Lost Sound Tapes store is the Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele cassette tape compilation. It has one track from BT and one track from 26 other bands.

There are plans for a cassette release on Lost Sound Tapes that compiles much of the early Blanket Truth material as well as some unreleased tracks.

TOURS: Defiance, Ohio on tour - west coast and the south

Last night I went to see Your Heart Breaks, Chin Up Meriwether, Kimya Dawson, Theo Grizol, and Defiance, Ohio at The Mine in Seattle. People really came out of the woodwork and the show "sold out", which pretty much just means there were a whole lot of people for a not so large space. Every band was wonderful, it was definitely the show of the summertime.

At the show Theo Grizol gave me some Nana Nemo cassette tapes for distro. You can get them in the Lost Sound Tapes store for $5 each. It's a split/collaboration between Theo of Nana Grizol/Defiance Ohio and Welcome Home Nemo. WONDERFUL! The new Defiance Ohio album is out on cassette as well, but you can only get that directly from the band for the time being. Hopefully we can stock some when they get back from tour. For now, you can buy it on CD and LP from No Idea Records.

COMMUNITY: Donate to Hollow Earth Radio by July 9th!

Hollow Earth Radio is an organization very near and dear to my heart. I've been involved with HER since August 2007 and I am now the volunteer coordinator, a weekly live DJ (Sundays from 6-8pm), and a member of the HER board of directors. We are a community based, online, free form radio station based in Seattle, Washington. Hollow Earth Radio provides a forum for underrepresented music, sounds, and perspectives in Seattle, King County, Washington state, and the larger Pacific Northwest. We focus on found sound, field recordings, forgotten music, local musicians, bedroom recordings, lo-fi demos, dreams, storytelling, and things that feel real.

We have a Kickstarter project, that I should have posted about earlier, in order to raise money for our new public space! It's located in the central district of Seattle right next to 20/20 Cycle on E. Union St. & 21st Avenue and will be open to the community. So far we have raised over $4,000 and we are trying to make it to $5,000 by July 9th, 2010. The money will go to the construction costs that Hollow Earth Radio have incurred for the new space and, if we are able to make it to $5,000, HER can purchase a much needed new computer. HER will start broadcasting from the new space starting this August!

The best part about donating to the Kickstarter project is that you will get a gold spray painted cassette tape with your name on it at the new station for donating $1 or more. All it takes is one dollar to be immortalized on the wall of our new space. There are also other wonderful incentives to donate, such as Hollow Earth Radio in-studio MP3s, tickets to the annual Hollow Earth Radio Magma Festival, a limited edition lathe cut record, and more! Payments for Kickstarter projects are done through Amazon.com so if you already have an account with them, it makes things very very easy.

For 3 1/2 years, Hollow Earth Radio has been operating out of a residential home. As an entirely volunteer-run organization, our focus is to be accessible and open to community involvement. The BP "oil spill" has been an incredibly tragic disaster. A lot of people have been lost for words when it comes to talking about this situation. Kimya Dawson has written a song that effectively manifests a lot of peoples feelings into words.

LST NEWS: Cassette tape prices going up in July

It's been 5 years now since LST-00 and we have sold tapes for $3 as long as the label has been active. Sadly, the time has come that we have to raise our prices. On July 1st, Lost Sound Tapes cassette releases will be $5 + shipping. We work very hard and put a lot of time into making the highest quality tapes possible, often with unique, handmade artwork for albums that are available on other formats (Madeline "White Flag", Math The Band "Don't Worry", The Endless Bummer "Donald Fagen Mix Tape", etc). Not to mention we release plenty of exclusive cassette tape releases (both Ukulele compilations, Seasonal Splits boxset, Blanket Truth "Indoor Camping" boombox version, iji "Soup/Salad", etc). LST NEWS: Andrew Mello/Weakness split tape out June 1st

After lots of delays, tape duplicator issues, and artwork setbacks
the next release on Lost Sound Tapes will be out on June 1st!

You can order it now through the Lost Sound Tapes store and it will ship on the release date.
It's a split tape between Andrew Mello of Massachusetts and weakness of Ohio.

Side A is a full album called What I Say Isn't What I Mean by Andrew Mello
Side B is a full album WEAKNESS by the band weakness
A total of 68 minutes of music for your rock and roll enjoyment.

I found out about both of these fellows a couple years ago. Andrew Mello I met through iji and weakness I spoke to through Myspace because of mutual admiration. They are equally talented in different ways but I thought they were both some of the best one man bands that no one had heard. Somehow it just made sense to propose a cassette tape with Andrew Mello's most recent album on one side and the debut album by weakness on the other.

Andrew Mello has often been compared to the Unicorns. He plays all the instruments and does all the recording/production. weakness I often describe as sounding like Weezer but with a lot more distortion. Kevin writes all the songs and they have now evolved into a 3-piece band. Their album was recorded at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN so you know it's legit.

CD versions are available if you're into that sorta thing. The weakness CD can be purchased from In The Fridge Records and Andrew Mello's new album is available directly from him.

Lost Sound Tapes has just reissued two of our most popular releases: Your Heart Breaks "Love Is A Long Dark Road" and Madeline "White Flag". We have simplified the packaging for these two releases in order to keep them available for purchase. Click here to purchase or just read more.

This July we will be releasing our first LP!
It will be a super short run reissue, 25-30 copies ONLY of the self titled Small Sur EP (well, it's pretty much an album, 30 minute running time). UKULELE, MEKULELE, WEKULELE OUT NOW!

Second of a three-part ukulele compilation series! FINALLY! Ukulele & So Can I was volume one and it was released back in 2006 as Lost Sound Tapes #2. Not only are all the songs on the new Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele from all different bands than the first comp, there are 4 more of them (27 tracks in all). Jacob Borshard, Hermit Thrushes, Yoyoyo Acapulco, MJ Hibbett, I Hate You Just Kidding, Factors Of Four, and Blanket Truth to name a few.

This first release by LST that was not dubbed in a bedroom, but was in fact duplicated by National Audio Company in Missouri. We had reservations about doing it this way, but are pleased with the end result. First run of 200 hawaiian blue foil tapes, with white imprinting, and a handwritten insert. The cover is a linoleum cut, block print by Jon Manning.

HOLLOW EARTH RADIO'S MAGMA FEST!

March also kicks off a month-long festival of awesome called MAGMA FEST. If you live in Seattle, you should attend! This year, Hollow Earth Radio has crafted 10 amazing shows of live performances around town at all-ages venues including: The Vera Project, The Mine in Ballard, 20/20 Cycle, The Fremont Abbey Arts Center, The Henry Art Gallery, Healthy Times Fun Club, Shafer Baillie Mansion, The In, and Kenyon Hall in West Seattle. The kick off show took place last night, March 5th with Mirah + Thao (from Thao with the Get Down Stay Down), Alaskas, Grr, and Deception Pass.

This month long annual fundraiser is produced by Hollow Earth Radio, a Seattle-based, volunteer run, DIY, free-form radio station that focuses on supporting the North West music community. Each week Hollow Earth produces show that feature found sound, field recordings, forgotten music, local musicians, bedroom recordings, low-fi demos, dreams, storytelling, and things that feel real.

Hey y'all, Lost Sound Tapes has more releases ready for ya! Sure, we haven't updated the blog in awhile, but that doesn't mean we don't have a full plate. I finally went back to school, moved into a new house, went on a Blanket Truth micro-tour, and plenty of other personal stuff you probably aren't interested in, ha.

Math The Band is a force to be reckoned with! Poppy, fun, dance tunes with lots and lots of analog synthesizer. Not to mention more BPM than any rational person would actually need. This duo puts on one of the most fun live shows this side of the Milky Way galaxy. This album takes a slightly more aggressive turn from their previous Atom And His Package-esque recordings and they are all the better for it. Think Andrew WK but cuter and just as much fun. Cave Babies is the solo project of Mr Josh 'Hoshwa' Redman. One half of the brother/sister duo Watercolor Paintings, Hoshwa creates surprisingly delicate, yet fun, pop songs. These songs are about crushes and being crushed, truly honest and pure feelings. Chord organ, horns, and ukulele have never sounded as well as they do on this tape. It's been awhile in the making and Lost Sound Tapes is very glad to present this tape to you, it's a very special album. PS: The first 20 or so copies will receive a hand printed patch of Hoshwa's face, just like the tape cover but larger and no text. Go to the LST store.

There's also sad news. My tape duplicator is very sick and is dubbing tapes that sound very bad. I will be taking it in to a repair shop soon and I'm crossing my fingers that they can fix it. As soon as that is taken care of we will have new tapes from Blanket Truth/Dana Jewell , Andrew Mello/Weakness, Pangea and our second ukulele compilation "Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele". I will actually be getting the compilation duplicated by National Audio Company, so that should be done sooner than some of the other projects.

The Lost Sound Tapes store is back up to full capacity! We're back from the iji & Watercolor Paintings tour in high spirits and full of warm fuzzies from all the wonderful people we met across the country. It was great meeting you all and seeing lots of great old friends. I've put everything we currently have for sale back up in the store section. Submit a song for our new ukulele compilation "Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele"!
As some of you know, we released a ukulele compilation tape once before, it was called "Ukulele & So Can I". There were 23 tracks on it and there were 200 copies. That was back in 2006 and they were gone the following year. You can take a listen to the first comp for a limited time here:

I received the test pressings for the Watercolor Paintings & iji split 7" yesterday. It's a black vinyl disk with 3 songs by iji and 4 songs by Watercolor Paintings. If you aren't familiar with these two bands, Watercolor Paintings is a sibling duo who play harp/ukulele songs that will break your stinkin heart. iji is a 6-piece indie pop band from Seattle with lots of energy and plenty of sing alongs.

The WCP/iji split 7" is going to be pressed in a quantity of 300 copies, with hand printed covers, and black vinyl.

We're taking open submissions for our new compilation "Ukulele, Mekulele, Wekulele". If you have a song that utilizes the ukulele in some way and would like to submit for consideration, please send a wav, aiff, or flac file to lostsoundtapes@gmail.com via a service like mediafire.com or mail a cassette or CD to Lost Sound Tapes / PO Box 45586 / Seattle, WA 98145. It's here! It's here! Here we have the third full length album entitled "White Flag" from Athens, GA native, Madeline Adams, known by most as simply Madeline. Her songs are hauntingly beautiful with personal lyrics and a stunning voice. "White Flag" is the culmination of three years of hard work from Madeline while she enlisted many of her fellow Athens-based musicians including members of the Elephant 6 Collective. The CD version of the album is available from Orange Twin Records.

The Endless Bummer tapes are ready to order!!! Remember the perfect pop of the Canadian group, The Diskettes? Well, David Barclay is back with a new group of friends, swapped the Pacific northwest for a warmer climate and his acoustic guitar for a keyboard. Add two parts tropical percussion and you've got a delicious pop stew goin'. "Donald Fagen Mix Tape" is a follow-up to the appropriately titled "No Beach Out of Reach" album by The Endless Bummer. Side A of the DFMT contains 4 brand new tracks and 5 hits from "No Beach...". Barclay writes incredibly witty & endearing lyrics and these harmonies are sweet enough to make even Brian Wilson proud. Madeline's new album "White Flag" will be released on CD via Orange Twin Records on March 10th, 2009, but you'll be able to snag a tape version of it before that! It's a 13 song, full band recording; hauntingly beautiful.

Cave Babies = Hoshwa, 1/2 of the band Watercolor Paintings and the beard behind the radio show 5...4...3...2...fun!! The album is somewhat of a concept album with tracks titled "Avocado Green", "Swamp Green", "It's Not Easy Being Green", and so on. Chord organ/ukulele/trumpet wonderfulness. Listen to it now @ archive.org, then buy the tape after you fall in love.

Sandy City will have a demo tape out real soon. They could be compared to bands such as The Kinks, Husker Du, Eric's Trip, and/or The Beach Boys. Some could call them surf punks or some could call them righteous dudes. Members of various bands, now united to sing about the west coast surf scene and other such urgent topics.

Super Famicom "The Wandering Floret Pt 1" tape
Well, it's finally out! Sorry about the wait. The Wandering Floret is an 8 part project by the prolific Mr. Super PJ Famicom. Prolific just got profilic-er. 8 full albums all released at the same time, that takes dedication. These somber folk-pop songs are the perfect companion to the coming winter. Grab a blanket and hibernate until April. First pressing of 100 tapes, beige covers with black ink, white tapes, and stamped 'nutmeg' colored labels.

Your Heart Breaks tape available again
Yep! We made 100 more copies of Your Heart Breaks "Love is a Long Dark Road". For those who missed out, don't snooze again! If you live in Seattle, this tape is on sale at SONIC BOOM Records in Ballard. The second pressing is almost identical to the first pressing. It's a perfect mix of songs that will make you shake your behind and songs that make you want to curl up in your bed. Guest appearances by just about everyone who's anyone in the northwest music scene, including duets with Kimya Dawson and Karl Blau. Full color covers designed by Sparky Taylor, solid orange tapes, and die-cut, printed labels.

"Indoor Camping", the first full length by Blanket Truth is now available on both CD and cassette! The music contained on the two formats are completely different recordings, with an exclusive track on each. The tape is a solo, boombox recording and the CD is a full band, digital 8-track recording by Tory Fiterre of Cartoon Monster. Exclusive artwork can be found on both formats, both designed by Stacey Hamilton (www.mystace.ca). All the best tracks from the inception of the band have been re-recorded and a bunch of brand new pop-infused baritone ukulele folk songs make up this 30 minute album. This is the 'good stuff'.

First pressing of 100 tapes, black and white printed covers, black tapes, and typewritten blue labels. Also comes with a mini, 4pt sized text, lyric booklet.

CD version on Now Hereness Records, limited to 500 copies with full color artwork. We have copies in our store for $5.

There's also a new cassette tape by the Santa Cruz, CA sensations known as JAMES RABBIT. If you aren't familiar, it's time to get familiar! Tyler Martin leads this rowdy pop ensemble that are way too good at their respective instruments. They recall the energy and exuberance of Queen and The Modern Lovers, while adding their own theatrical spin. This is a re-release of two albums "Continental" and "Cavalier", from 2005, that were originally released on CDR and have since sold out.

These tapes come packaged with hand-stamped, pastel-colored covers, and black and white printed labels on baby blue cassette tapes. Hop to!

Originally available only on the WCP/Mutes spring Californian tour, but now it's up for grabs to the general public. 100 copies total, less than 50 left. Hop on it if you'd like a copy! Bright yellow card stock covers with a hand drawn cover designed by Rebecca Riley. Black and white printed labels on white tapes, held inside clear polycases. Take a look to your right for a very accurate portrayal of what these two songwriters are like on a daily basis. How can you not be interested? Right?

Here's what we have planned for the second half of the year:
Faux Jerome "Faux Jerome" tape - Tomm Johnson aka Tricera aka Track Mastra's new musical project. An eclectic hip hop beat tape from this fresh project.
Cave Babies "Green Album" tape - Hoshwa from Watercolor Paintings solo music. Ukulele, chord organ, trumpet, and percussion. Awesome.
Super Famicom "The Wandering Floret" tape - PJ Famicom is releasing 8 albums, Wandering Floret Pt. 1-8, on 8/8/08. We're proud to be one of the labels releasing this. LOOK OUT!
Blanket Truth "Indoor Camping" tape - Full length album, completely different recordings from the CD version that is being released on Now Hereness Records. Solo, boombox recordings.
James Rabbit tape - A double album re-release on tape of two out of print CDs from these fun-loving, quirky, indie poppers. A special little something else from them at the end of the year.

Other stuff too, but it's secretive for now! More on that when things are confirmed. Yesssss!

New tapes from iji and Your Heart Breaks

Hurray for new LST releases! We've finally turned double digits. LST-11 and LST-10 are available now: iji "Soup / Salad" tape and Your Heart Breaks "Love is a Long Dark Road" tape. Not to mention we also made a second run of the first iji tape we released titled "Sorry Seashells".

iji "Soup / Salad" is a double album with some of the best songs to date! Catchy, fun indie pop, now with extra female vocals. Spaced out extra long songs on the B-side accompanied with two stories about melons. Side A is a bit more of the cute, hooky, sing alongs that you've come to know and love. Soup and salad colored labels.

In case you missed it the first time around, there are now 100 more copies of the iji "Sorry Seashells" tape available. Side A is the album "Sorry About the Lo-Fi" which contains the instant classic "Gangster Grillz". Side B is the best of Zach's old band Seashells. You can't lose! Second pressing has white tapes with printed labels.

Your Heart Breaks "Love is a Long Dark Road"
is now ready for purchase, as well! After an epic recording session at Dub Narcotic in Olympia, we have a 10 song album to present to you in the beloved cassette format. Bright orange tapes! Printed, die-cut labels! Fantastic songs! Cameos by Karl Blau, Steve Moore, Kimya Dawson, LAKE, Led To Sea and at least a dozen others. Compared to the previous YHB outings, the pop songs are sugarier and the slow songs are sadder than ever. Break your heart and rebuild it in 30 minutes flat.

For those waiting on the Watercolor Paintings/Clitorectomy and the Mutilators "With Love" tapes, have no fear, they have not been forgotten about. There have been some issues with the cover, but that should be remedied by next week and it'll be ready to go.

Up next after the WCP/CatM tapes is an album by Faux Jerome. FJ is Tomm Johnson aka Tricera's new project. A bangin' hip hop beat tape packaged in red and black flannel slipcases. Real slippery. Is red/black flannel still "in"?
